Previewing today’s Raiders vs. Browns game

By Jon Becker
Sunday, December 2nd, 2012 at 10:00 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders haven’t won a game in more than a month, but the Browns haven’t won a road game in more than a year. So what gives this afternoon?

It should be noted the Raiders are the ones who sent Cleveland into a road tailspin, beating the Browns last Oct. 16 to begin what’s now a 12-game losing streak away from home.

And…the person we’re relying on to draft our way out of this personnel mess has just been usurped by the owner, who hired him to run football operations yet just chewed out the head coach he hired.

    ============================================

    Oh, for the love of…

Look. Owners and coaches do talk sometimes. It’s not forbidden. Whichever Rooney currently owns the Steelers probably talks to Mike Tomlin every now and then. Doesn’t mean their GM’s on the way out.

BTW, in case anyone didn’t notice, Mark Davis just usurped McKenzie by going directly to Dennis Allen and chewing him out. This likely means McKenzie will be gone after this year. Great. Mark is like dad after all.

You’re reading WAY too much into this. I’ve been in management for more than a decade. It’s extremely common to have “skip level” conversations where someone talks to someone else two or more steps up the chain. I do it all the time, talking to people that my managers under me manage and talking to my boss’s boss or some times a few steps higher up the chain (when I worked at larger corporations).

It’s actually beneficial to hear the opinions of the guy that actually signs the checks and a good CEO (or owner in this case) will want to have a great working relationship with people that don’t report directly to him. As long as it’s not a routine pattern to bypass layers of management to have such conversations, they are more beneficial than harmful in a health organization.

  8. Sullivan44 Says:

    Duck,

    ==========================================

The function of an NFL general manager is to run the football side of operations; sign players, draft players, hire coaches, etc. It is NOT to erect a 50-foot-wall between the coach and owner to ensure the two never ever speak to each other, even when they’re on the same freaking plane.

  22. Sullivan44 Says:

Mark said, and Reggie confirmed, that this was the FIRST TIME Mark had talked with DA directly like this which was prior to the recent beatdowns on the field.

Therefore u cannot attribute ANY of those losses due to Mark intervening and chewing out the coach.

  40. Sullivan44 Says:

Wow. So an owner “can” chew out an employee who was hired by a manager he entrusted to run the particular department that employee is in, because he owns the company. Brilliant argument. I’ll tack on to that. You can pound your head into a wall, too. It’s going to hurt, and could cause permanent damage. But nobody can stop you from doing it.

Note from Cleveland: the Browns defense is for real. Is extremely well coached. I suspect they don’t fear the Raiders running game much and are going to come hard after Palmer.

  47. Sullivan44 Says:

Did you guys know an owner can talk to anyone he wants in his company? I sure didn’t. Thanks for the enlightenment. Now, on to the question. Why would an owner who admits he knows nothing about his company’s trade, and hired a GM to run the company for that very reason, directly criticize one of the employees hired by that GM? According to Mark Davis’s own logic when hiring McKenzie, what would Mark know?

What stands out? QB’s throw balls to WRs that are rarely open. WR’s on other teams all seem to know how to make unbelievable catches that we’d never expect our guys to do.

We drop balls when we are wide open. We even let it bounce off our hands and into the defenders bread basket.

The difference in talent between our receiving core and the rest of the league isnt even close.

And please dont blame the scheme. If we have to limit our scheme to our WR’s limited route tree running abilities, then you are only proving my point as to how not-talented we are.

Seriously, go watch some other teams play. It’s depressing.

There was no way to predict the vast number of ridiculous key stone cop mistakes our players have made.

I thought we were better than this, I was wrong. Im not afraid to concede that.

That said, I havent been off since week 1. I havent been making predictions, just reporting whats going on, and why its happening. And everything Ive said, the coaches and now our GM have reiterated. That means Ive actually been spot on with my “observations”.

If you are itching for some credit, sure, you deserve some. You were the first one to call for the fire sale. A lil early for my taste but in the end, you were right. We shoulda dumped everyone while we could.

Asnah in the 3rd round would be nice. I predict he will go early 2nd though.

Look at seattle taking that Pass rusher 15th overall last year.

    Height: 6-6. Weight: 270.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.69.
    Projected Round (2013): 1-2.
11/17/12: Many are raving about the potential of Ansah. The senior has totaled 47 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, four sacks and six passes broken up in 2012. He has exploded on the season after making a grand total of 10 tackles as a junior and sophomore.

There is no doubt that Ansah has a great combination of size and speed. He could be this year’s version of Chandler Jones or Jason Pierre-Paul; players with little college production but great athletes who go in the first round of the draft.

Via waltefootball they have him going 1 or 2

Man… The officiating in the NFL is becoming an absolute joke.
With all the phantom/terrible/downright ridiculous calls affecting games since the usual clowns came back, it’s becoming painfully obvious that the NFL is racing toward the same legitimacy as pro wrestling.
The bias for some teams and against others is so obvious it’s laughable.
It’s getting to be barely worth watching.

    That’s without mentioning the Raiders….

I’m watching the Bears / Seahawks game. The Bears have had every single call go their way. Some bad ones too.

TP should have been active and on the field in some sort of package on WEEK 1.

Knapp wasn’t wanted in Seattle or Houston. That’s why they’re doing so well. When DA hired him he was giving up on the season before it started. Knapp is like herpes on a dk.
