Its bad enough Raiders passed on Pierre Paul for McClain to begin with.
Al should have just went with how he also does. HEIGHT and SPEED and we’d with a probowl pass rusher right now
instead of a linebacker who cant play linebacker
—————
I gotta wonder how much of that is on the staff of the Giants.
Either their scouting dept has had the greatest run of draft picks of D-lineman in history or they have some damn good coaches in that building.
Im a firm believer that it falls mostly on the player. 99% of the time. But damn, when you’ve gone as long as the Giants have with picking up one stud DE after another, it’s really hard to not give the staff some credit.
Though, Ive read where players have said it started with Strahan, and he was really good about passing his leadership and habits down to younger players, and they’ve passed it on down as well. If that is the case, its impressive, and VERY rare.

The Niners are just finding a way to lose this game.
Rams came to play.
December 2nd, 2012 at 12:01 pm
You see how Jeff Fisher has the Rams playing and competitive in every game…..That’s coaching and that’s what the 49ers saw with Harbaugh a bump or increase in games won immediately because of player production and good game planning.

Thanks for the cred riff, but i still think your ignoring the terrible gameplaning by knapp.. no gap or pwer running untill the season was a wash and da stepped in.. and not using one of our best guys. Reece. A guy who not only knew his position but every aspect of the rb position and most of the te and wr routes… plus the regression… all on the coaches. Dropped balls.. goes on the players yes.. but try tossing it to the guy with the best hands on the team next yr maybe?

Hey, I’ll give it where it is due. And you were the VERY first to call for the fire sale.
Im not ignoring the gameplanning. What Im aware of is that Im not a NFL level coach. Im not qualified to question the gameplanning. Im not watching the film of the opponents. And neither are any of the Knapp haters.
The only thing I review is the tape of our own team. And I look at the score of the game at halftime of the first half of the season. We were in all the games. And the tape showed that our gameplanning was sound. Most games should have had us up big if it wasnt for our MAJOR FVCKUPS by the players.
Reece showed up late to camp. It made a difference. Just like I said it would.
And youre wrong about the power blocking, we never started the season full ZBS. We have ran both all year. Not 50/50 but it didnt matter. The PBS wasnt working early either because our guys werent physicall enough. Nothing more to it than that.
When you cant run, and then your WRs can catch or run the right routes, what is a coach left to do?
Meyers was supposed to be the guy who has the best hands. He’s dropped a TON of passes this year. Including two TDs, one that ended in a INT.
Im not ignoring the coaches. I just cant blame them until we can execute the very simple stuff without screwing it up. Cart behind the horse, ya know?

Yeah he was.
But I wouldnt say we were a sack machine under him were we?
We got a lot of sacks with Marshal as the DC I remember. But that was with a lot of safety blitz’s. We had Nnamdi back their so we could afford to blitz more.
With no shut-down CB, we have to rely on stud DE play the last two seasons, and we dont have the DE’s to pull it off. If your D is relying on “coverage sacks” to get its stats, youre in trouble.

Playoff predictor? Yes
Way off all year? No
There was no way to predict the vast number of ridiculous key stone cop mistakes our players have made.
I thought we were better than this, I was wrong. Im not afraid to concede that.
That said, I havent been off since week 1. I havent been making predictions, just reporting whats going on, and why its happening. And everything Ive said, the coaches and now our GM have reiterated. That means Ive actually been spot on with my “observations”.
If you are itching for some credit, sure, you deserve some. You were the first one to call for the fire sale. A lil early for my taste but in the end, you were right. We shoulda dumped everyone while we could.

Same here, I was calling for a 10-6 / 9-7 season. After week 3 it started to become more apparent.

Drafting good players helps to support the players you already have. Getting a JPP only assists guys like Strahan and Tuck. Now you cant just scheme for one player because there’s a new player you have to account for.
When you look at the Raiders you see 1 good draft player with 10 other guys that make the 1player’s job harder. Its like being the only 1 at your job doing work. 1 great player = a bad team. 10 decent players = a good team.

That year we were tied for 1st, we also had Nnamdi. Those were coverage sacks. Not stud DE play.
The year after we lose Nnamdi we werent nearly as good at getting sacks. See how that works? Crappy CB’s and worse LB play and average DE’s is not a good recipe for success, it doesnt matter who the coach is.

We did blitz a lot. Why do you think Marshall got the axe? It wasnt because he couldnt do his job.
You can blitz when you have the #1 CB in the league back there. Of which, at the time, Nnamdi was.

And it was a tough sample size each game because we were not getting many rushing attempts, for the reasons already stated, our passing game was inept so the D just keyed in on our run game.

When Leach was at Tech, they trained WRs by putting them in a big sandbox and firing tennis balls from a pitching machine. It seemed to pay off. I don’t remember any other decade where they turned out at least three NFL WRs(Welker, Crabtree, Amendola).

2003 – Nnamdi and Brayton…..I wanted Anquan Boldin…. we drafted Brayton over Unmenyora. We could have had Umenyora and Nnamdi with our first two picks.
2004 – Gallery……..I wanted Eli, if we couldnt get him, I wanted Fitzgerald. We could have easily had Fitz, Boldin, and Kurt Warner right around this time period. We also drafted Jake Grove instead of Nick Hardwick. SMH. We passed on Jarred Allen and Matt Shaub for Stu Schwiegart. We took Jonnie Morant instead of Michael Turner. This draft was loaded, we were one of the few teams that completely missed the boat.
2005 – Fabian Washington……..I was ok with Fabian at the time. But we passed on Aaron Rogers, and then took Andrew Walter over Justin Tuck
So if youre keeping score, this is what our team could have looked like in 2005
QB – Warner & Shaub, or Brees
RB – Michael Turner
WR – Boldin & Fitz & Moss & Reggie Wayne
C – Hardwick
DE – Umenyiora & Tuck
CB – Nnamdi & Woodson
DT – Sapp
MLB – Ray Lewis
S – Ed Reed
That is a very talented team. But lets keep going…..
2006 – Huff…… I wanted Leinart
2007 – Russel….. I wanted Adrian Peterson. Calvin Johnson was the easy pick. Darrel Revis and Pat Willis were also available. We really messed up bad here.
2008 – DMC….. I wanted Dorsey or Chris Long. This was the best draft pick we’d had since Nnamdi. That’s horrible when you think about it.
2009 – DHB….. I wanted Raji or Orakpo
2010 – Rolando….. I wanted Suh but we werent in a position to get him. Many here wanted JPP, and you were all right.
2011 – Seymore via trade….. I was ok with this trade. We could have gotten Andy Dalton but its not like we passed on any great talent.
2012 – Palmer – I was ok with this trade…. as for our later pick, I wanted a OL. Jury is still out on Bergstrom.
Hindsight is always 20/20. Just about every team could have had a allstar squad if they knew then what they knew now. It just goes to show you what a crap shoot the draft is. Some players pan out, most dont.

Jeff Fischer is a perfect example of what good coaching and leadership looks like.
DA and Knapp are perfect examples of what crappy coaching looks like.
NO way this team should be this awful, that is mostly on coaching as we all know the players suck……

All time low if we lose. Today.
Al missed on 95% on his 1st round picks. You have to get starters from your 1st rounders.
Al drafted duds, that is why we sux, 10 years of bad drafts = 2012 Raiders!!!
————-
Al has never been good with 1st rounders. That is why he was so effective prior to free agency. He’d often lose his picks because he’d sign away other teams players and lose his picks as compensation or simply trade em.
Back before the other owners had to pay the players, Al had no problem doing it and that was his greatest asset.
December 2nd, 2012 at 1:05 pm
97. Man those are some bad memories.. I know the draft is a crap shoot but watching Al Davis you would think he was shooting a pair of those Dungeons and Dragons dice…. Watching him draft completely destroyed my stomach lining

Actually, Colin Cowherd once broke it down one time based on what a good GM told him.
He said all teams in the NFL are basically 8-8 teams.
- 12 wins means you are exceptionally talented and the ball bounced your way a few times
- 10 wins means the ball bounced your way a few times.
- 8 wins means you were pretty much par
- 6 wins means the ball bounced against you a few times
- 4 wins means there is a SERIOUS lack of talent on the team, and just 2-3 bad 1st rd picks can do it to you
By my recap of our draft the last 15+ years. It’s easy to see why we are so bad.

That’s because it is true.
He was great in the previous era.
But once the TV money started pouring in and the NFL became a multi billion dollar business, then big time CEO’s got involved and other teams started being run like professional businesses. Al never adapted.
Al was the best at being a unique owner doing it his way.
But that was when he was competing with other owners like him.
When things went corporate, he did a marvelous job of trying to stay relevant, but he couldnt compete with the corporately run teams.
Then free agency made it even worse. His business model for stealing up talent from other teams and paying them a fair shake was done.
He never adapted. He tried, but he didnt.
