Raiders geared up for Colts, er, Broncos

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, December 4th, 2012 at 3:35 pm in Oakland Raiders.

When the Raiders look at the Denver Broncos these days, they feel as if they are looking at old the Indianapolis Colts.
Quarterback Peyton Manning is playing himself, with linebackers Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil playing the roles of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.
The Raiders admit that it really doesn’t matter how much time anyone has to prepare for Manning. He’s going to be a handful, no matter what. Game-planning for Miller and Dumervil isn’t any easier, especially on a short week.
“Yeah, they’re pretty good, man,” Raiders right offensive tackle Khalif Barnes said. “They’re kind of like the old Indy. Peyton’s older, with a Mathis and Freeney type of deal.
“Von can rush, he can drop back and cover, and Elvis does a good job coming off the edge, too. They do well in their scheme. They do very good at what they do. So, pass blocking those guys is going to be key.”
Miller and Dumervil combined for 23 of the Broncos 38 sacks the first 12 games. Barnes and left offensive tackle Jared Veldheer figure to see the dynamic duo most often, though left guard Cooper Carlisle said the Broncos do some things to free up their best playmakers.
“They’re both a handful,” Carlisle said, “and they both kind of present different problems.”
To that end, Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp said it’s incumbent upon him to devise ways to help keep Dumervil and Miller from teeing off on quarterback Carson Palmer. The best way is to keep in extra blockers.
“The more things you can show them, the more it helps,” Carlisle said. “At the same time, there’s times where you’re going to have to do it on your own.”

– Running backs coach Kelly Skipper said running back Darren McFadden looked sharp in practice Tuesday.
“You could see him cutting, you could see him bursting off the foot,” Skipper said. “You wouldn’t have noticed today that he had been injured.”
Skipper’s glowing report is consistent with coach Dennis Allen’s expectation of McFadden playing Thursday night for the time in five games.
For his part, McFadden said he is awaiting word from the team’s athletic trainers on whether his high-ankle sprain is healed well enough for him to play in a game.
“As long as they say I’m good to go, I’m going to sign off on it,” McFadden said.

– Safeties Matt Giordano and Mike Mitchell passed the league-mandated tests for players that suffer concussions. Therefore, they are cleared to play Thursday night.
Backup cornerback and punt returner Phillip Adams missed practice as a result of the concussion he suffered against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, the same game in which Giordano and Mitchell were concussed. He is questionable for the Broncos game.

– Knapp assumed the lead role at practice Tuesday as Allen remains in Texas, where Allen’s father Grady passed away Monday night.
Allen is expected to rejoin the Raiders on Wednesday night and coach his team against the Broncos.
Allen spent last season as the Broncos defensive coordinator, working under coach John Fox. During that time, Fox and the other Broncos coaches and players got a chance to meet Grady Allen.
Fox said Allen’s father’s passing puts things in perspective, with football taking its proper place in the background. He added that he texted Allen to pass along his condolences and to let him know he is thinking about him during this trying time.
“Well, No. 1, first and foremost is, he’s in the right place,” Fox said. “Sometimes we get a little caught up in what we do for a living and those types of things. But if that was something he would have asked me, I would have said you need to be with your family.”

– Defensive tackle Richard Seymour (hamstring) missed practice once again. It seems almost certain that he won’t play Thursday night after missing the past four games.
Wide receiver Juron Criner (shoulder), tight end Brandon Myers (shoulder) and Barnes (triceps) were added to the injury report. All three were limited in practice Tuesday.

– The Raiders signed fullback/running back Jamize Olawale from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad and placed him on their 53-man roster.
Olawale fills the void on the active roster created by the two-game suspension of middle linebacker Rolando McClain, who is eligible to return Dec. 10.
Olawale is an undrafted rookie out of North Texas. He played for De La Salle High School his sophomore season before transferring to Long Beach Poly.

Jon Gruden has one main reason to get back to coaching in the NFL.

His very last game, he walked off his home field a loser to the biggest loser the NFL ever seen, Jamarcus Russell.

That can’t sit well with him.

pryor is better than chris sims and gradkowski, and tui

    >>>>

And these are your examples of Gruden’s SUCCESS stories at QB?

Sorry… Gruden only coached up one great QB, and he was a vet similar to Palmer.

If Gruden comes here (which I still doubt but would LOVE) your Madden-rockstar Pryor is gone.

Traded for a fourth rounder probably . He likes QB’s that can PASS first.
    =================

NO but pryor is a better qb than those i mentioned

    pryor can pass first

doesnt matter if you dont believe it lol

    19/32 59% in the preseason

that small body of work warrants a serious look, if ti were any so called drop back qb people would be drooling all over it

If anything I think it would be giving him the opportunity to help shop for the groceries. And everything else he couldn’t do when Al was around. Remember, him an Reggie have relationship from way back in the GB days.
    =============================================

But remember Gruden was nothing more than an offensive assistant under Holmgren at the time he was there with McKenzie. And there is nothing that says they have a similar philosophy or can get along on any level.

So Is Gruden just going to coach? Or Just going to playcall? Install an offense? Run the franchise? Gruden is someone who would only want a huge hand in a franchise. Which is what McKenzie is doing. This Just does not make sense unless they are going to get rid of McKenzie, which goes against his dads wishes and elevates Hub Arkush 10 weeks into his ownership era.

  • http://www.RAIDERS.com Back-n-Black

He may not be the greatest coach, but Gruden the most legitimate coach even connected to the Raiders since… well, Jon Gruden.

If this did happen, Reggie would have to make him develop young players and not mortgage the future with older, high priced players.

All that said… it still seems like a 1% chance of this being true.

Do you guys remember when the Redskins brought back Joe Gibbs who won 2 SB’s there? He ran an offense that was state of the art when they were winning.

They brought him back and the fans sold out the stadium and in less than 2 years the stadium was empty again and he stepped down.

We’re doing the exact same thing here based on some memories that have long since passed. It was great but it is OVER it’s time for all of us to move on into the future and stop reaching back for something that once was or else we’ll never really get anywhere.

  • Chris in NY

I just hope if Gruden does come back it’s as HC and not in some BS, cushy advisory role.

I swear I called this on this board a year or two ago. Gruden was calling a game, must’ve been one of ours, and the way he was kissing Al’s ring and waxing poetic about Raider Nation you just knew he wanted back in. Then Papa came up with that stuff yesterday about Gruden telling him a couple years back that he wanted to return. And his immediate text reply to Papa on the air yesterday was very coy. Very telling, if you read between the lines, to me at least.

In case you missed it, Papa texted Jon “Alot of rumors that you may be coming back to the Raiders.” Gruden’s response was “We did some damage back in the day.” A non response generally means that it’s a strong possibility if not likelihood, and that was a little more than a non-response. That sounded like a hint to me.

    The plot thickens. Very interesting.

If Gruden is indeed on his way back…I couldn’t be more GEEKED or JACKED UP about the direction of this franchise. This move would re-energize a rabid fan base and moreover the Gruden-McKenzie duo will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come. If indeed this is being hashed out as we speak, we are talking about a multi-year deal that would stabilize the franchise for at least a decade.
This is what Reggie was talking about when he said “We will win Super Bowls”.

    Priestj12,
That’s a valid point and a valid concern. But two things:

    1. Gruden wasn’t out of the game nearly as long as Gibbs and Gruden has stayed closely involved while Gibbs was off doing his NASCAR thing.

    2. I think it would be such a jolt of excitement and momentum around the Raiders that the players and those involved couldn’t help but get swept up in it. If we could just capitalize on that momentum with some early wins, it may be all we need to turn the tide.

if gruden is thinking of coming back im sure it has to do with tp6, and the high draft spot next year.

    NOBODY CARES ABOUT CARSON LOL

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Met Gruden in June at Hooter’s in Santa Monica. Talked to me and buddies for about 10 mins. The guy was cool as hell and let me wear his SB ring while taking a picture with him. One thing is for certain: He can’t stand Carson Palmer. Told me he thinks he’s washed up and was pissed that he chose to quit on the Bengals instead of playing for his brother. If Gruden comes here, Palmer is Gandhi!! Print that!

  • http://www.Raiders.com KoolKell

Poor fans. Now we’ve got Gruden to wish for, to “keep hope alive” . Best wishes folks.

  • ESETERIK78

Two words regarding Dennis Allen: Under contract.

But hey, if you want Santa to bring you Gruden for xmas you better be nice.

  • Chris in NY

Also, Gruden is much younger than Gibbs was. It’s a lot easier to see Gruden’s style and approach working better with today’s 20 something’s than Gibbs, who is kind of a nice, nerdy old man at this point.

  • Just Fire Baby

As soon as the Raiders announce a new stadium deal, I will believe the rumors.

Until then, I remain in doubt.

  • Priesttj12

Man I’m telling ya’ I listen to Gruden talk all the time if you are gullible enough to believe he has changed you’re in for a rude awakening.

Case in point: Gruden criticzed RG3 and Cam some 3-4 weeks ago for running with the football for 10 yard pickup. He said something to the effect”why have a QB run for 10 yards and risk injuriy when he can pass for 10 yards and the rec’r break a tackle and add another possible 50 yards like Jerry Rice used to?”.

I forget who said it but it was also posted by I think JFB in here. He hasn’t altered one bit. I think there is just a bunch of wishful thinking in here. I’m sure Mark Davis and Gruden are talking I said as much a week ago. I said Mark loves him some Jon Gruden. So I don’t doubt the story one bit. My position is I’m not sure it’s the best thing for this org. right NOW.

Oh! and I definitely believe Gruden will trade Pryor for whatever he can get for him to get a drop back passer no way he spends his precious time develping some young QB when he can get a vet like Palmer and win now, in his opinion.

  • Chris in NY

Maybe we’ll bring back Grads to start. Gruden drafted him in Tampa and he’s plaing for Jay Gruden now.

  • walrushooker

So, the report is Gruden possibly coming back in a prominent position. Is there any position besides head coach, GM that he would fit? Player personnel, college scouting…. offensive coordinator, no chance, but I can dream.

This feels like a fat chick rejecting you when you’re drunk, I don’t know whether to be happy or sad.

This organization looks to start doing some of the things that everyone was bashing Al on not doing for years. Then out of the blue, they want to can everyone instead of giving it some time to develop. I love Al, but I’m realistic of what a mess we’re in now. He sold his soul for one more lombardi. He tried year after year to do everything he could to get us there. He took risk after risk, and never blew up the personnel after 2002.

  • DJ Johnny

When Arkush said this he was “breaking a big story” and it came off that he has inside info that something was/is imminent.

I was “geeked” cuz he sounded so sure about it…even though afterwords he said “IT IS NOT A DONE DEAL YET” but…”my sources tell me….etc. etc.”.

Now…when I see these other analysts chiming in it’s starting to sound like the Tennessee stuff, but the station mad it sound like this was way more than just a rumor.

    3. No doubt Gruden took a Bucs team assembled by Tony Dungy. Fact is he worked miracles with Brad Johnson who is arguably the worst QB to ever win a SB. And last I checked, when Tony Dungy coached the same team, they always faltered in the playoffs.

    4. Had Gruden stayed in Oakland for the 02 season, there is ZERO doubt in my mind the Raiders would have 4 Suber Bowls right now.

Gruden would give us a much-needed jolt, in public perception and throughout the media.

We will probably double our number of prime team games, there would be a freshness to the whole thing.

But let’s not act like Gruden rode off into the sunset a winner, dominating the NFL and leaving on his own terms.

His first year they won it all, then he went 6 years without a playoff win, finished under .500 in half those seasons (including a 5-11 and 4-12 year), lost 4 in a row to end his last season and got canned.

If brought in, he and us, would still have a ton of hard-work ahead.

Guys you are missing my point, Gruden could take this same roster and win 9-10 games with. I really believe that and he would inspire the Raider Nation to no ends that goes without question as well. I’m saying we will be going backwards instead of forwards. If you think he will win a SB or get this org. to the top you’re dreaming it will be a initial huge jump until the players get tired of his act. Then you’ll see why it was a waste of time.

You could get the same thing with a young David Shaw and have the next 10 years with a few SB trophies sprinkled in. Gruden will not bring that here just a bunch euphoria and then nothing to ultimately show for it.
