Raiders geared up for Colts, er, Broncos

When the Raiders look at the Denver Broncos these days, they feel as if they are looking at old the Indianapolis Colts.
Quarterback Peyton Manning is playing himself, with linebackers Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil playing the roles of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.
The Raiders admit that it really doesn’t matter how much time anyone has to prepare for Manning. He’s going to be a handful, no matter what. Game-planning for Miller and Dumervil isn’t any easier, especially on a short week.
“Yeah, they’re pretty good, man,” Raiders right offensive tackle Khalif Barnes said. “They’re kind of like the old Indy. Peyton’s older, with a Mathis and Freeney type of deal.
“Von can rush, he can drop back and cover, and Elvis does a good job coming off the edge, too. They do well in their scheme. They do very good at what they do. So, pass blocking those guys is going to be key.”
Miller and Dumervil combined for 23 of the Broncos 38 sacks the first 12 games. Barnes and left offensive tackle Jared Veldheer figure to see the dynamic duo most often, though left guard Cooper Carlisle said the Broncos do some things to free up their best playmakers.
“They’re both a handful,” Carlisle said, “and they both kind of present different problems.”
To that end, Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp said it’s incumbent upon him to devise ways to help keep Dumervil and Miller from teeing off on quarterback Carson Palmer. The best way is to keep in extra blockers.
“The more things you can show them, the more it helps,” Carlisle said. “At the same time, there’s times where you’re going to have to do it on your own.”

– Running backs coach Kelly Skipper said running back Darren McFadden looked sharp in practice Tuesday.
“You could see him cutting, you could see him bursting off the foot,” Skipper said. “You wouldn’t have noticed today that he had been injured.”
Skipper’s glowing report is consistent with coach Dennis Allen’s expectation of McFadden playing Thursday night for the time in five games.
For his part, McFadden said he is awaiting word from the team’s athletic trainers on whether his high-ankle sprain is healed well enough for him to play in a game.
“As long as they say I’m good to go, I’m going to sign off on it,” McFadden said.

– Safeties Matt Giordano and Mike Mitchell passed the league-mandated tests for players that suffer concussions. Therefore, they are cleared to play Thursday night.
Backup cornerback and punt returner Phillip Adams missed practice as a result of the concussion he suffered against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, the same game in which Giordano and Mitchell were concussed. He is questionable for the Broncos game.

– Knapp assumed the lead role at practice Tuesday as Allen remains in Texas, where Allen’s father Grady passed away Monday night.
Allen is expected to rejoin the Raiders on Wednesday night and coach his team against the Broncos.
Allen spent last season as the Broncos defensive coordinator, working under coach John Fox. During that time, Fox and the other Broncos coaches and players got a chance to meet Grady Allen.
Fox said Allen’s father’s passing puts things in perspective, with football taking its proper place in the background. He added that he texted Allen to pass along his condolences and to let him know he is thinking about him during this trying time.
“Well, No. 1, first and foremost is, he’s in the right place,” Fox said. “Sometimes we get a little caught up in what we do for a living and those types of things. But if that was something he would have asked me, I would have said you need to be with your family.”

– Defensive tackle Richard Seymour (hamstring) missed practice once again. It seems almost certain that he won’t play Thursday night after missing the past four games.
Wide receiver Juron Criner (shoulder), tight end Brandon Myers (shoulder) and Barnes (triceps) were added to the injury report. All three were limited in practice Tuesday.

– The Raiders signed fullback/running back Jamize Olawale from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad and placed him on their 53-man roster.
Olawale fills the void on the active roster created by the two-game suspension of middle linebacker Rolando McClain, who is eligible to return Dec. 10.
Olawale is an undrafted rookie out of North Texas. He played for De La Salle High School his sophomore season before transferring to Long Beach Poly.

    ==========================================

Again, when McKenzie took over he was a $30mm over the cap. What that means is we are NOT last years 8-8 team. Dudes had to go. McKenzie made a lot of tough choices, but he did the right thing which was pare as much of the dead wood out of here as he could, as quickly as he could.

The problem is you now see a team with no players, no depth, no anything which is what Davis left us with. We all knew this day was coming. And guess what, that is going to continue next year as well. Bill Polian, Ted Thompson, and Trent Baalke could all come here, donate their time and it would STILL be a disaster. That’s the fact.

Now, once again, we can all throw fits and stomp and want to fire everyone, but I don’t see that as being overly productive and I’m really don’t see Ozzie Newsome coming out west to help out. Other than whining and crying, does someone have a better suggestion than having guys who have had alot of success in this league try for more than 10 weeks to get us out of this?

Im still totally behind Dennis Allen, and I doubt there are any truth to the gruden-story – if there were we would be in the same disarray as we were the last Al Davis decade…

we need calmness, restructure the cast and that will result in some bad plays, i never expected us with more than 6 wins, but im sure we will be strong contenders for the division next season with a full strong draft.

I dont get the hate for Dennis Allen, what I get is the hate for Knapp, him we need to lose for the 2013season…

No way Gruden comes back with no experienced QB on hand.

Then him and McK can draft a young QB in Round 4 or 5 or just sign a young backup in the league with some upside to learn behind Palmer.

While true, only because the west was so weak last year.

We were out of contention for the wild card about this time last year, and 8-8 would do nothing for the playoffs this year, heck 9-7 wouldn’t and 10-6 is no guarantee in the AFC.

Dennis Allen inherited a 16-16 team with the addition of the best QB by far we’ve had in a decade.

Tell me again why playoffs were such a ridiculous fantasy?

Some of you Reggie / DA / Stability rules guys are looking at this thing through the lens of what it’s become and not through the lens of what it was before these guys got here.

I agree as well, DA was put in a rough spot. I have nothing against the guy. Also like seeing him bench players for poor play and throwing morons (Suspendo) out of practice. When’s the last time that happened? I’ve always said DA needs time.

On the flip side, I’ve always said Gruden is never coming back. But Wouldn’t be against the idea if the rumors are true. I would send a jolt through the org and speed up the process.

First of all, it’s misleading to compare one season to another. Circumstances change for us, as well as our opponents. Secondly, Reggie didn’t “let” anyone of value leave. If he had the resources we may still have, at least, Wimbley and Michael Bush. His hand was forced on many personnel decisions. Lastly, in the end we were dumped by Tebow–a bad QB. When you saw that Denver signed Peyton Manning did you think it was going to get easier?

Getting Gruden to come back would be a great business and football decision by Mark Davis.

You would think in that sense he is smarter than old Al, when it comes to realizing getting rid of Gruden was probably one of the worst football decisions his father ever made in Raiders history.

Passion and excitement would come back to Raider Nation with the return of “Chuckie” and season ticket sales would shoot thru the freakin roof without a doubt!

    I thought you loved Gruden?

At any rate it might turn out to be all b.s.

The guy that is “breaking” this though is a respected nfl “insider” but it doesn’t mean it’s true.

I admit, the whole thing just seems weird.

  • http://www.raiderettes.com Sullivan44

I don’t think Gruden’s going to be able to do anything with this team. Honestly, I think he had a better team in Tampa that he couldn’t get off the ground. He too will have to rebuild, and he likes to rebuild with veterans. But just the sound of Gruden coming back is too good to be true. He certainly will be animated and won’t just let the team lose quietly, that’s for sure. He’s a motivator. Can’t believe I’m actually seeing these headlines.

  • RaiderRockstar

If Hue were coaching we’d be in contention right now and Thursday’s game would actually mean something.

Says the blog’s biggest Hue homer. nobody in here knows that we wouldn’t have 3 wins or less with that clown as HC

it’s a new year and a different team. get on with your life dude

  • http://www.raiderettes.com Sullivan44

Johnny, I loved Gruden when Al was here, because we needed someone like Gruden then.

I’ve always wanted a GM-run team. I’d rather have players good enough to coach themselves, with a HC that just puts them into a position to win. With Al running things, you know you’re not getting the players. So you need a motivator like Gruden.

  • Al_is_theraiders

    i know…3 wins is easy…unless your DA.

  • fingers

Yep… This team needs a ton of new faces no matter who the coach is….. Reggie signed a lot of 1 year contracts … Even With Gruden the teams a few years out …IMO

  • RaiderRockstar
  • DJ Johnny

We won’t be left hanging on this story though.

Just like with the Gruden to UT rumors, Grudens camp had to come out and deny the reports; imo it was because there were so many stories out there that ESPN probably asked him what the heck is going on with all this talk of u having a contract in hand to coach Tennessee?

This one is strong enough to merit a response at the very least and we won’t have to wait long for it…

  • fingers

  • TerrapinRaider

Boy, is everyone looking for a change or what? Everyone wants this coaching staff gone. We’ll hang our hopes on anything. At this juncture its “Gruden to return to Oakland” …hope springs eternal.

FIRE DA, KNAPP, OL COACHES AND REGGIE IF YOU HAVE TO. I MEAN FIRE THEM ALL! This is one of the worst coaching staffs I have ever seen. And they have some monster sized egos.

  • http://www.raiderettes.com Sullivan44

    And here’s something to consider:

I’m assuming if Gruden comes, Reggie’s out. Because I can’t imagine Gruden working for a hands-on GM. Gruden left here in the first place because he wanted more control. So, if Reggie were to be out, that means Mark Davis gave McKenzie all of about 10 months before he gave up on him and threw him to the wolves. Should we expect him to be any more patient with Gruden? Man, was I naive about Mark. This apple did not fall far from the tree, after all.

  • Chris in NY

Guy, we’ll see where Hue winds up. Part of the problem was not many chairs were really open at the time. Another is the fear a HC has that Hue will outshine him.

But I think with seeing how Marvin Lewis went out of his way to welcome Hue back and seeing how bad the Raiders were before he arrived and how badly they regressed immediately after his firing, I think those fears will fade and Hue will get a much bigger job real soon. Already interviewed for the Cal HC job, according to several reports, and I think at minimum he’ll be an OC real soon.

Our defense sucked terribly last year too, we just scored more. There’s no way, even if we had the exact same roster that we are serious contenders. Look around at the elite defenses, look at their components and then compare to what we field. It’s not even comparable. Defense has been our main problem for a decade now. McKenzie can’t fix it if he has no draft picks and no money. So lay blame where it should be, with these players. They are not capable of NFL level competence.
