Seymour not playing Thursday, everyone else likely to play
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, December 5th, 2012 at 12:58 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Running backs Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson were at full strength in practice Wednesday, and they are listed as probable for the game against the Broncos.
Therefore, it’s almost a certainty that fans will get their first look at McFadden and Goodson in a game since they suffered high-ankle sprains against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 4. Both missed the past four games.
Defensive tackle Richard Seymour tweaked a hamstring in the same game. He hasn’t been able to practice ever since, including Wednesday. As a result, Seymour was declared out for Thursday night’s game against the Broncos.
Defensive end Jack Crawford (toe) and cornerback Phillip Adams (concussion) are listed as questionable. The eleven other players on the injury report, including McFadden and Goodson, are listed as probable.
It appears as if the Raiders are as healthy as they have been all season going into a game, including the regular-season opener, when they were missing wide receivers Denarius Moore and Jacoby Ford.
– NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will be joined by former Raiders coach John Madden, former Raiders defensive lineman Howie Long and former Broncos quarterback John Elway at a fan forum at Oracle Arena on Thursday afternoon.
The forum will be attended by media and 150 fans selected from among the Raiders season-ticketholders. The event begins at 3 p.m., more than two hours before the Broncos and Raiders play.
– Given Long’s presence at the fan forum, it seems logical that he will be the one lighting the Al Davis ceremonial torch before the game.
The Raiders have not announced who will light the torch. I don’t recall seeing Long at any Raiders practices or games since they relocated to Oakland in 1995.

Seymour not playing Thursday
This is news? Is it not yet safe to say that Richard Seymour has already played his last game as an Oakland Raider?
Personal opinion, I think Seymour is just another vet who wasn’t buying what the staff was selling and decided to cash it in this season. This guy has been essentially being paid for nothing, all season. Must be nice.

I truly feel bad for his family situation.
However, the real pity I have for him is that he truly is dead man walking…
Maybe not the best decision leaving for 3 days after 5 weeks of atrocious ball, during a short week, facing the streaking 8-3 Manning led Broncos, playing in the national spotlight, staring down an owner at home who is trigger twitchy already and rumored to be in discussions with R. Nobody throws games in the NFL. However, I could easily see Fox having some pity on DA (and knowing we’re not always going to be this cruddy) and shifting his offense into low gear once they’re up by 3 touchdowns or so.

Did Al Davis have a will that is being probated in California? Probably more likely a Trust that we can’t look at, but has anyone checked?
It would be interesting to see that court file if indeed a probate estate has been opened.
Did Al leave his shares to Carol to delay estate tax consequences, or did he leave the shares to Mark and have enough $$ squirreled away to pay the estate tax?

IIRC, Carole is the official owner of the Raiders right now, but she’s letting Mark run the team. Mark, in turn, is letting Reggie run the football operations.
Husbands can bequeath to spouses with no tax liability. However, when Carole passes away, Mark’s going to get hit with a 20% inheritance tax, which means probably $100 million or so. He may well have to sell at that point.

Mark Davis–and his mother, Carole Davis–currently own 47% of the Raiders. Under NFL bylaws, Davis must maintain at least a 30% ownership stake in the Raiders to maintain operating control. As we demonstrated in December, Davis likely will look to sell between 15-17% of the team to settle estate tax bills that will become due upon the death of his mother. As importantly, a minority ownership group that owns 20% of the Raiders and is led by east coast financiers Dan Goldring, David Abrams, and Paul Leff, is open to the possibility of selling their equity positions.

There’s no money squirreled away either. Al Davis was a huge spender in last days refinancing and spending his way to a championship that never came.

Gruden isn’t coming.
But if he were he’d want top 5 money. Additionally his latest 5 year contract with espn just started:
Jon Gruden will remain in the ESPN “Monday Night Football” broadcast booth for another five seasons. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders coach agreed to an ‘exclusive’ contract with ESPN that begins in September 2012.
There is debate on just what ‘exclusive’ means but he’s estimated to be making 4.3 mil with espn.

Prior to his death in October 2011, Al Davis owned 47% of the Oakland Raiders per CSN Sports. Upon his death, this 47% equity stake in the Raiders was inherited by Al Davis’ wife, Carole Davis (Carol Davis). Accordingly, no estate taxes are currently due on the Raiders, since spouses have an “unlimited marital deduction.” But upon Carole’s passing, the team will be inherited by Mark Davis, the son of Al and Carole Davis. At this time, estate taxes will be due on the team.
Accordingly, Carole and Mark Davis will have to plan for estate taxes. For NFL franchises, selling an ownership stake to pay for the estate tax is most feasible. Other estate planning measures, such as life insurance policies and trusts, do not adequately cover the enormity of estate tax bills for $740 million franchises. Even though publically the Raiders have maintained that they engaged in sophisticated estate tax planning prior to Al Davis’ death, we do not believe that Mark Davis will be able to settle his estate tax bill upon his mother’s passing without selling at least a part of his eventual 47% ownership stake in the Raiders.
It is worth noting that the Raiders are not unique in this situation. Estate tax planning was the reason why the Spanos family retained Goldman Sachs in 2010 to explore a 30% equity sale in the team. (The Spanos family and Goldman Sachs are no longer exploring an equity sale for estate tax planning purposes.) Estate taxes were also the reason why Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez, the children of Georgia Frontiere, sold their 60% of the St. Louis Rams in 2010 to Stan Kroenke. The Frontiere children needed to pay their estate tax bill.
Estate taxes in 2012 will be 35%. Estate taxes in 2013 and beyond are less clear. Since federal estate taxes are a current source of Congressional debate, estate taxes are in flux. The Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 expires after 2012, at which time estate tax rates are set to increase up to 55%. This could change depending on Congressional action.
Accordingly, Carole and Mark Davis are faced with uncertainty regarding their estate tax situation. If Carole Davis were to pass away before 2013, Mark Davis would inherit not only the team but also an approximate $121 million tax bill.

Exactly. That’s when Ed Roski or AEG comes into the picture. Mark sells most of his stake, retains the title of Chairman of the Los Angeles Raiders, gets a lifetime suite in LA Stadium (or Farmer’s Field), and a bunch of corporate types take over. Well-funded corporate types who know the value in hiring a good football man to run things and then getting out of the way. If Reggie’s got this team on the upswing by then, they’ll probably just keep him in place.

Again there are three things that you guys are not considering: lst, that they didn’t see this coming. Obviously, they did, and Davis could have had a VERY large life policy to offset this. 2ndly, Davis owns a lot of real estate. They could liquidate that and leave the team alone. If the estate is worth $1B and they need to come up with $150mm, that is not that large of a share of the team and they could probably sell part or finance part. Or both.

Well Jon has already said he wanted to come back to coaching. PAPA confirmed the story two days ago. Gruden even called Al about coming back in 2009 before AL went to hue.
Like i said GRUDEN is a competitve guy. He wants to cement his legacy as one of the greats. The guy is only 50. Its like a military figure. He wants to come back and take an organization back to greatness. You cant do that sitting in a booth choosing the easy path.
PAPA even said JON GRUDEN said he wanted to come back to the Raiders because he had “UNFINISHSED BUSINESS” papa was shocked to hear that. Raiders have a special spot in grudens heart.
U dont think Mark trys to court him and visca versa?? For all we know Gruden is asking mark to come back. Might even be a stake in the team

Gruden has earned two Sports Emmy Award nominations for his work in the “Monday Night Football” booth, where he is joined by play-by-play commentator Mike Tirico and analyst Ron Jaworski.

______________________
See, I had the perfect estate plan for Al Davis back in 2010…..when the estate tax lapsed….Al could have established residency in Oregon and utilized the death with dignity act in 2010 and left the team to Mark free of an federal estate tax.
SMH….what were you thinking Al?

The smile on Jon’s face greeting the lunatics in the black hole a few weeks ago spoke volumes about what he wants to do. Gruden is perhaps the only iconic figure that could replace another iconic figure in Oakland, and you know that he thinks about that since he was left in the snow of NE.”
A comment from the PFT article.. I agree

Difficult to judge on DA and Reggie.
Apparently the first time they ever met was DAs interview. Reggie hired him during the second interview. At the DA intro presser Reggie likened it to a partnership where they both would be involved in everything instead of splitting work.
Recently Reggie says this is my football team….

I am positive Jon would come back to the NFL in a heartbeat. But there are reasons that he is not here. And the longer time goes on, the slimmer the chances of him coming back. Frankly, I think he should have taken the Tennessee Vols gig. Tom Cable or Raheem Morris will probably have HC gigs sooner.

The reality is that new ownership typically wants their own people to run the show. But the fact that the Browns have been competitive in every game this year and have won two in a row (including a rare victory against the Steelers) and have a promising young nucleus of players makes us wonder whether the locals will make enough of a push for consistency and continuity to keep Heckert and coach Pat Shurmur in place.
Though the choice between Heckert/Shurmur and the unknown may result in a preference for Door No. 2, the Cleveland media seems to be lining up against the idea that Heckert should be replaced, if replacing Heckert means hiring Lombardi.

Nice facts here on Lombardi to Cleveland.

When I said on here Gruden lightning the torch signaled his return people took me literally and thought it was a stupid thing to say.
I am pretty sure when Gruden was in Alameda for that ceremony he had to have crossed paths with Mark, which most likely resulted in a conversation between the two. I am pretty sure if they had a conversation that maybe, just maybe the subject of the current state of affairs as it pertains to these sorry a$$ Raiders was brought up by Mark who no doubt seeked Gruden’s opinion on what his approach would be to try to fix the mess.
Gruden probably voiced his displeasure about the ZBS, how the talent on the roster was misused, probably identified to Mark the check cashers that needed the boot.
That conversation IMO has led to this rumor we keep hearing about.
December 5th, 2012 at 2:10 pm
Has Hub or PFW ever scooped a major story ?
I strongly doubt that Hub has any source(s) within the Raid front office.
I think Hub saw Gruden light the torch and knew this meant that Mark and Jon had been in communication. Reasonable to assume that Davis inquired if Gruden had any desire to coach again and the possibility of one day returning to the Raids was broached.
So now Hub decides to run with this ’scoop’ even though in reality PFW has no inside information whatsoever.
Hub and PFW get lots of publicity and web site hits.
Hub doesn’t lose face if Gruden doesn’t return to the Raids – as all he ever claimed was that there were ‘discussions’.
I’d welcome Gru back, but I strongly doubt it’s in the works.
Think HUB is embellishing things to get publicity.

Really?????
Cmon man. You guys kill me on here sometimes
If anything, Gruden is building leverage for his next job, having his agent float the story out there. Or perhaps he is simply listening to what Mark has to say. There is undoubtedly SOMETHING to this story, though probably not much. Or maybe there is. Only a few people really know.

This is where the story goes off track: lst off Reggie would not be talking to Gruden. Secondly, Gruden would not be talking about taking a HC job, he would want some say in personnel and total football ops. So, the story has to be Mark Davis approached Gruden about taking a big role in the team even tho he just hired McKenzie 7 months earlier. Which would go against the wishes of his father who built the brand and his fathers hand picked closest advisors.

I truly hope its just input into personnel, not the actual GM gig, then again, Reggie has not given me any reason to date to want him back

Reggie had a tough row to hoe, I’m inclined to give another year, but DA should’ve had our boys ready and he just didn’t, day in and day out.

December 5th, 2012 at 3:42 pm
I would envision Gannon, Romo (reaching & hoping), Rod Woodson & Wiz to be back as assistants under Gruden.
Krapp, Tarver, Hoffman & the rest of the bums will get the boot.
That alone is worth 2-3 wins.

If Gruden comes in and that means not only DA gets fired but Reggie as well??? Ohhh man i may just cry tears of joy… talking about killing 22 birds with 1 stone. Yesss. That’ll mean that big ole gut of his cost him his job before it even got started.lol Big dummie firing hue could go down as the biggest mistake in his career if he gets the axe.

Al mortgaged the team’s future on a bunch of has-beens. Mark Davis – apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. This team is not the same team as last year. Continuity. Gruden will also want to run the outdated WCO.
Those were some of the gems.
December 5th, 2012 at 3:44 pm
Really? #153
December 5th, 2012 at 3:46 pm
#161 – I heard five different callers. Three were decidedly against the idea. One wasn’t real keen on Gruden (the WCO comment), but wants DA gone at all costs. And the final caller was pro-Gruden.

December 5th, 2012 at 3:48 pm
Those first two callers were weak.. bunch of crybabies..
They rather have a Portland state WR coach in DA then a superbowl winning coach..
I heart priest..lol only thing he was right about was getting DA OUTTA HERE. Priest Rich Eisen was just on with PAPA at 230.. he said the only way Gruden would come back is if they had a young qb like Kapernick or Rg3.
Papa mentioned that JON GRUDEN loves TERRELLE PRYOR.. then EISEN said oh well there u go.
December 5th, 2012 at 3:48 pm
I am all aboard for Reggie/DA however it will be hard to say no to Gruden.
I bet the team is moving to LA and that’s why Chuckie has his nose in Marks shorts.
December 5th, 2012 at 3:49 pm
the Gruden rumors alone are disaterous for the current regime and the FACT that gruden and/ or davis haven’t come out to deny them, IMO confirms them. ever work at a job when you KNEW you were getting laid off in a week? motivation drops
December 5th, 2012 at 3:49 pm
btw one intersting point Townsend made.
Said if your flirting with GRUDEN you better bring him in all the way cuz if u dont.. then whats that say about da or what does he feel?
EITHER WAY DA is not gonna last here if u are talking about GRUDEN already and the season aint even over
December 5th, 2012 at 3:50 pm
also another intersting point.
GRUDEN coming to the Raiders alone could finance a new stadium and investors..
His salary would basically payoff with the stadium seats filled alone.

Agreed. Even if it werent Gruden next year, anyone but DA should be an upgrade. People can point to cap, talent, etc. all they want. I was OK with Hue leaving, but I find it hard to imagine that this team would look this bad if Hue were still coaching. I find it hard to believe that the team would look this bad if Tom Cable were coaching. Even if I was to speculate, and there is no proof for any of this of course, but I would still have a hard time believing that this team would look this bad if ANY of the other initially rumored coaches would have taken over, be it Winston Moss or even Mike Tice, bad as he is.
Through all of this, the one thing I see the most clear is that the majority of Raiders fans are not impressed with Dennis Allen and are just ready to move on.
Dennis Allen is simply not HC material. From one human being to another, good for him for getting one of the best jobs in America and making a nice piece of change for himself. Hes been given an opportunity many people could only dream of, and hopefully, hes been able to learn from the experience. I wish him well in his future endeavors in this life. But he will not be coaching the Oakland Raiders much longer.

This just in.
Mark is going to pay Gruden whatever he wants.
Mark has demonstrated that he will listen to old time Raiders and he knows that he will be unable to retain control of the franchise due to inheiritance tax and fiscal cliff.
Unless he can fill seats and move the team to LA he will need to sell to finance the tax. This is a last ditch effort.

I think also that if GRUDEN wants to come back, it will happen.
It would be a great business decision imo.

As far as Mark being “just like Al” there are some huge differences in this. Mark may just want who he feels are the “right guys” to run the team, whereas Al took an active game day role. Mark won’t do that.
Also, this would be the first time Raiders actually brought in a big name coach AFTER they became a big name. Al never did that.
Mark will stay out of game planning but he is not gonna just sit idly by and watch this team lose w/o a fight.
To me, that’s good news.
He wants us to have a team we can be proud of and imo he will pull out all the stops.

How?
We give up big yards and big points every game. No matter where the other team starts from. So if we can save some money and get some better defenders, I’ll downgrade at P and give up 10 yards in field position.
Tell me where having Lechler has ever made a difference to the end result? He’s been here forever, and we’ve still been one of the most generous teams in points allowed every single year. They had to travel further but the result never changed.
Not to mention that a lot of the time he boots the ball so far the coverage is too far behind it, and we get torched anyway.
December 5th, 2012 at 4:48 pm

Lechler is also the emergency #3 QB. But he is still not worth that kind of jack.
And BTW, Hue Jackson was never in the running for the Cal job. They hired Sonny Dykes.

Normally, I’d scoff at that remark. But after the debacle at long snapper, there may be some merit there. But still, you gonna pay a guy that kind of money to hold the ball?
December 5th, 2012 at 4:50 pm
Again, Lechler’s contract is up after this year. He won’t make 5 million next year, he’s open for negotiation.

December 5th, 2012 at 4:52 pm
Since the start of the 2007 NFL season there have been 35 games where the closing line favored the away team by 9.5 to 11.5 points. In these games:
The team like Denver won the game 26 times (74.3%)
The team like Oakland won the game 8 times (22.9%)
The team like Oakland did better against the spread, going 26-9 (74.3% ATS) and covering the spread by an average of 3.2 points
Will oak beat the spread?
Another beat down is going to be tough to forget about…
December 5th, 2012 at 4:53 pm
We give up big yards and big points every game. No matter where the other team starts from. So if we can save some money and get some better defenders, I’ll downgrade at P and give up 10 yards in field position.
Tell me where having Lechler has ever made a difference to the end result? He’s been here forever, and we’ve still been one of the most generous teams in points allowed every single year. They had to travel further but the result never changed.
Not to mention that a lot of the time he boots the ball so far the coverage is too far behind it, and we get torched anyway
———
I think you need to see what an average punter looks like before you think it’s not that important. Lechler has had us spoiled for along time now. Getting rid of him isn’t going to improve our defense either.

drama means publicity
coaching rumors equal publicity and possible ticket sales
pro sports has no integrity or morality
players are peices of meat and gladfiators, with no value once they remove thir helmets, and coaches are interchangable care takers.
ask john belcher , harry carson, junior seau and a host of others.
besides these players and coaches and orgs dont give a rats azz about the fans or what we think, they only want your dollars.

Field position has never been a factor because we are so bad. Teams can start at the two or the 37, it has never mattered. We miss tackles, assignments, and teams walk down the field.

Also, this would be the first time Raiders actually brought in a big name coach AFTER they became a big name. Al never did that.
Mark will stay out of game planning but he is not gonna just sit idly by and watch this team lose w/o a fight.

I live in LA (Manhattan Beach). I love the raiders and would welcome them in SoCal. However it probably won’t happen. In fact it’s VERY unlikely. The power brokers of LA want nothing to do with the Raiders. As often sighted on local sports talk programs. Specificvally, during the Raiders brief stint in LA, gangbangers specifically vatos adopted the team. Those vatos susequently ruined the live game experience for normal people and families, just as they are currently doing at Dodger stadium. Fights, stabbings and stupidity became far too uncommon. As a result of this rogue element the team is unwanted down here by the powers that be. The stadium would be too large to price them out. Unlike Staples and Lakesr tickets which most vatos can’t afford

With alot of hope and expectations when we got RS from the Pats, when you sum it up…he has been a spotty player. We need to move on from Seymour and get some committed talent!
