I find it hard to call someone truly “great” when they have such a hard time making those around him better. Kobe has been one of the more difficult teammates to be when comparing him to the other greats. Lets just say, chemistry isnt his strong suit. Thus the reason he’s always needed a allstar cast around him in order to even make the playoffs.
The Lakers have a better winning percentage without him than with him. That’s pretty rough.

Magic was in the Finals 9 of his 12 years in the league. Think about that.
When Kobe had the team to himself, he missed the playoffs one year and got knocked out in the first round another.
The rest of the time he’s had very good talent around him in the names of Fisher, Shaq, Fox, Artest, Pau, and now Nash and Howard. Not to mention, playing for the Stern-favorite Lakers doesnt hurt. We’ve all seen how many calls with the refs have gone their way suscpisiosly over the years.
Magic is in the top 3 of all-time players. Kobe is the 5th best Laker of all-time. You cant even compare the two.

For someone who’s been to the playoffs and finals as much as Kobe, can’t say he doesn’t make people around him better. He’s not a guy you go and have beers with or invite to a BBQ, but he brings it to the court every single game and practice, so if teammates can’t rally around that, then there isn’t much hope. Rich Gannon wasn’t a likable guy, always getting after teammates, but they respected his desire to win and work ethic.

I love Kobe Bryant because much like Rich Gannon he’s not the most talented guy in the league.. its his incredible work ethic and discipline and leadership ability.. that ability to demand the same effort and discipline from his teammates that makes kobe so great.. How can you not play hard with a teamate that brings it everynight no matter whats broken?

We have nothing positive to look at. No talent on defense. There isn’t a single raider on the TEAM I wouldn’t trade for dumerville, Von miller, porter or even the ancient champ bailey, much less anyone on our defense period. All 11 guys on that defense, other than perhaps Houston, would be better off just going out and shooting themselves.
Bryant: not a starter
Shaughnesy: not the same since surgery, overrated
Seymour: dead already
Kelly: enough said
Wheeler: can’t tackle
Burris: tired and has bad coaches
Branch: biggest defensive disappointment of the year
Giordano: great guy, too bad he can’t play
Bartell: was covering guys better when he was hurt
Huff: doing what he can at corner, but was never an impact player, and never will be
Carter: done
Gaither: really???
Id say holding dungver and stiff neck dork to 52 would be an accomplishment. Grow up and get real. Denying the obvious is what raider fans have been doing that for too long. “There’s always next year”. Waiting for the draft (another bad draft) before November. A thought about this whole Gruden thing:
You have to read the press release carefully. I don’t know what the big fuzz is about what the Raiders said about this issue. Yes, they denied it, but you have to read between the lines. The comment of “There’s two people on this planet that can make this happen….and they both asked me to tell you there’s no truth to this report” doesn’t say much. It just says that Both Mark and Reggie asked him to deny the report. Now here I see two possible scenarios. One, there’s some truth to it, and Mark went to Reggie and asked him to deny the report, out of respect for DA. Which they would’ve done anyway regardless if it was true or not. Or two, there really isn’t any truth to it. But then you have to ask this, would the Raiders really get this upset and be forced to release a press statement to deny the rumor?? Why not just let it be, and let it go away, as any false rumor would. It’s not like any distraction this may cause is going to hurt the way we are playing and risk a playoff birth.
It is because of that, that I think there’s more to this than meets the eye. Whether it was just a phone call that took place to see if there was any interest on either side, or whether there’s a contract being worked out as we speak, I think there was something to this behind the scenes, that forced the Raiders to deny it for now.
I just hope that this doesn’t kill any chance of whatever there was, working out, and Gruden coming back. That would be a huge shot of energy, both for the team, and the fans. Most fans anyway.

Kobe wasnt the best player during the Shaq days, nor was he the leader. And during the last two titles, he was the best player, but far from the leader. That title went to Derek Fisher.
There is a lot to be desired in Kobe’s game. Not physically. Not in his will to win or competitive spirit. But between the ears. That said, I know Im splitting extremely fine hairs there and I dont expect it to make sense to the average fan. The stuff Im pointing out with Kobe only a coach would point out.
Im only critical of Kobe because he was just oh so close to be nearly perfect. Im even harsher on Shaq believe it or not.

It’s true, people used to say the game passed Al Davis by but really, the times and people passed Al by, not the game. The idea of lining up and beating the man in front of you is the best way to win football. Press man with natural pressure is the best way to play defense. Running and throwing deep is a good offense. Al’s problem was finding guys to do this, not his philosphies. Players have too much money with too much free time to dedicate themselvs to domination.

Sadly though, even our players best isnt that much.
The effort was there against the Browns. They played hard. Theyre just not very good.
So its really hard to condemn DA based on the outcome. Measuring effort is so subjective.
