McDonald grades the Raiders off Broncos game

Beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders off their performance against the Denver Broncos in a 26-13 loss at the Coliseum. Here are McDonald’s grades and comments:

Pass offense
Consecutive passes in the first quarter illustrated the maddening inconsistency of quarterback Carson Palmer (19-for-30, 273 yards, 2 TDs, 1 interception). The first was a perfect 58-yard rainbow to wide receiver Rod Streater. The follow-up was forced to tight end Brandon Myers, sandwiched in bracket coverage. Champ Bailey picked it off in the end zone. Carson giveth, Carson taketh away.
Grade: C

Run offense
The good — Darren McFadden broke loose on a 36-yard run on the first play of the second half, the longest run against the Broncos this season by 12 yards. The bad — the Raiders had two rushing first downs and gained 25 yards on the 15 other runs from scrimmage in the game.
Grade: D

Pass defense
Peyton Manning was 26 of 36 for 310 yards and one touchdown and made some throws that were simply impossible to defend. Three sacks thwarted deep Denver penentration and the Broncos were forced to settle for field goals. Phillip Adams had a diving interception to stop another threat. But there were too many third-down failures.
Grade: C

Run defense
The Broncos had enough control of the game to stay persistent with the run and finished with 140 yards, but they had to work for it with 39 rushes. Knowshon Moreno had 119 yards on 32 carries and scored on a 1-yard run. Andre Carter and Mike Mitchell had tackles for losses on running plays.
Grade: C-plus

Special teams
Mike Goodson’s decision to bring out a kickoff 8 yards deep in the end zone backfired as he was dropped at the 8-yard line. A sack-fumble a short time later swung the game Denver’s way for good. Shane Lechler placed three of his five punts inside the 20-yard line and had a 43.4 net. Denarius Moore gained 8 yards on his only punt return.
Grade: C

Curious decision by the Raiders to defer after winning the coin toss, giving Manning the ball to start the game. The Broncos immediately marched 68 yards for a touchdown to start the game, their only extended touchdown drive. The Raiders ended up opening second half with possession while down 13-7 — validating coach Dennis Allen’s decision — but they couldn’t capitalize. Not a lot of issues with strategy, play-calling or emotion. Problems mostly rested with an inferior team.
Grade: B-minus

At this rate, book Reggie taking Matt Barkley in the first round, because he’s mediocre, and has good christian faith etc. 2013 will get worse than 2012 if this regime is given a vote of confidence by Mark Davis to continue rebuilding under their ‘vision’.

  • fingers

So far Allen’s ” vision” hasn’t impressed me … Or by the looks of this blog anyone else

  • The Beeech Dawg

Brahs, my buddy just discovered he also – he he – got some volcanic tanning cream on his nads and burned off most of his pubes

    What an idiot, huh dudes

Anyway he’s now trying to calm his nerves in the jacuzzi then will call a babe from Spearmint Rhino to give him an emergency salad toss

Guess that’s why they call it the blues

  • fingers

Knapp and Tarver have impressed me less than Allen has… Pretty bad

  • VanHeathen30

Reggie’s vision is clearly that of a retired NFL Linebacker who rammed his head into other humans for 10 years and has blurry vision…
It’s going to be Marks selection of Reggie that keepsmthisnteam from rebuilding anything.

  • You know whats so funny about it is that everyone here on this blog (who by the way has not seen one practice this year) seems to know more than the coaches front office and experts who have seen every practice this season.

That’s what makes me laugh so hard at the retardation in here.

  • GG

Don’t be surprised when Reggie/Allen grade Briesel as someone they’re impressed with and him having a roster spot sealed…..simply because they brought him in. That’s how myopically agenda-driven this regime is.

wrong his name could have been joe blow to post those numbers and every other rookie qb record he set is phenomenal.

Palmer is a sad sack 10 year loser, they dont compare at all

  • Not sure why Mark hired Reggie with so many qualified GM’s right here that would work for peanuts!

Due to Matk’s Lack of ANY IDEA HOW TO RUN A FRANCHISE, He gave Reggie Carte Blanche to make wholesale changes to the entire org chart, and now we have No Idea who is capable and who isn’t…but Raliegh got himself an NFL Paycheck, as did a whole bunch of Reggie’s other friends. same thing DA did with the coaching staff and that is an undeniable disaster…this isn’t working out with Reggie, Mark probably knows, but can’t afford the hit financially or around the league to change it out anytime soon…

  • GG

Book it, and come back to me. IF IF Mark returns this regime in 2013, you watch what they do in the off-season…they’ll look to trade all those players simply because of, and sell BS to the fans about how Briesel has impressed them on film. Then you’ll see that agenda-driving.

How many times do you read certain beat writers continuing to excuse reggie/allen, and always using the phrase of how this regime was lumped with Al Davis mistakes that they’re trying to correct and to give them 2-3 years to fix. It’s because they’re being shills for this regime, spreading that message to herd them into the pack.

  • Al_is_theraiders

Ok, straight up. The firing of HueJax made the Palmer trade look worse than what it should have been. Hue woulda built a team around Palmers strengths, and McFaddens’ too. But trigger happy Reggie fired Hue (bad bad move) and the rest is history.

Palmer needed HueJax (like Montana/Walsh, Brady/Buttacheck, Manning/Coughlin, Plunkett/Florres, you get the point)

Firing HueJax was not good for Palmer. Hue should have been allowed the off season to build HIS team, obtain a legit DC and keep Bush. But no, we threw it in the ditch. Trashed it to the garbage heap. Spit on it. Say what you want, the firing of HueJax was Palmers undoing. Bad, bad, bad move by Reggie. It is abundantly clear and evident. Peace out y’all.

    DA: doesn’t value field position

All this leads to a WORTHLESS team on Sundays that has a roster full of guys with ZERO Value around the league….PATHETIC

WOW another game where the RAIDERS DIDNT EVEN BOTHER TO SHOW up.. NO EMOTION, NO DIRECTION on OFFENSE.. just like a sandlot pickup game.

A house full of hall of famers and it was zero emotion. Sorry howie long, and Rod woodson even had to watch that.

  • GG

It’s been apparent all year that Reggie loves Allen and Allen loves Knapp and Tarver. They’ve all been backing each other after every week of the season, saying how they’re happy with their hires, about staying the course etc.

Those guys are incredibly conservative and too proud to admit mistake and make change. How long did you hear Allen refusing to say Knapp was a problem, but that he’s happy with him and that the problem was the players. It took a near mutiny by the offensive players to force Knapp to adjust mid-year and include PBS. Reggie has been sold on Allen from the start, and his MO has been evident getting rid of Raider staff all for his own, even if they were working, he just wanted his own. And he’s very methodical and committed to his own decisions. He will not fire Allen, and Allen will not fire Knapp/Tarver. This regime is blowing up the organization and Mark is either on board, or he’s been hoodwinked a bit, or late to realize what’s going on and is also concerned.

  • Al_is_theraiders

DA doesn’t value winning…(it’s his it factor)

  • GG

I am not sold on the GM or HC just yet but I am not willing to judge them just yet either.

I was not talking about you when I said there were a lot of GM’s here you seem to always have valid points and posts that are a good read.

This regime inherited a bag of shlt and I think we can all give RM a couple of drafts before we start busting his chops.

Greg Papa just questioned the coaching staff. When raides were on the 8 yard line.. why did they have a spread formation.. and marcel reece on the opposite side.

They had VON MILLER going one on one with Khalif barnes and NO HELP near the goaline. Said it was a bad coaching error. Raiders are constantly being outcoached

    Example of JG2013…

Post-Saints I was expanding on the possibility of Gruden returning, and why it makes sense, etc. JG2013 was posting how that’s nonsense and he’s heard it direct from his ’sources’ that its not happening.

Then when the rumor gets some fuel via the PFW article, JG2013 is on here expanding on how it’s a done deal, he’s heard it from ’sources’ etc.

Then when the rumor got shot down, JG2013 was on here expanding on how it’s not happening, he’s heard it from ’sources’ etc.

I posted this earlier that Hub Arkush is STILL saying Gruden is in play in Oakland.

I know there’s been a few calling him a no name hack etc. but the guy..at least up till now has had a very good rep around the league. He’s been a very credible insider. Heck, he has a Heisman trophy vote.

I was passing along what I heard AGAIN from him this morning on the radio.

It’s weird that Gruden coming to Oakland is almost getting more fan interest in Chicago than the Bay Area. Probably the reason is it’s Hub Arkush; who is very well known and respected in Chicago.

I sincerely doubt that he would risk his reputation on some baseless rumor.

I thought after the strong denial from Raiders that this would end and Hub would issue his apology or his “my bad” i was wrong and I apologize to DA and his family but he is just as convinced as he was earlier in the week and is standing by his story.

Hub STRONGLY stated he is 100% CERTAIN a meeting took place with Mark Davis and Gruden to talk about coming to Oakland. He also stated that Gruden is “playing NFL teams against each other” at this point. He added that he is 100% CERTAIN Gruden will be back coaching in the NFL next season. He added that even though other teams are interested in Gruden he feels Oakland is the best fit and his “sources” say they think it will be Oakland at the end of the day.

So, no backing off from this story like I thought would happen.

I assume we won’t hear anything more about this till the season is over but who knows.

The 100% CERTAIN part of the story is what I find most interesting and I (like a few others here) might dismiss this whole thing if it were some hack goober we never heard of, but 100% CERTAIN is pretty strong.

If Reggie doesn’t fire Allen, Allen won’t fire Knapp/Tarver. They’ll be here in 2013. And watch-out in the off-season for…

    — Briesel given a roster spot.

    — Reece, McFadden, DHB, Moore, Veldheer, Wisniewski, Houston, Bryant, Shaughnessy, Huff, Branch all on the trade block.

    — Jones, Pryor, Mitchell, Chekwa, etc, all to be released.

The MO is there. Reggie got rid of holdover Al staff entirely, even if they were good at their job. They got rid of Rod Woodson, Wisniewski and many other position coaches that were holdovers and were doing fine.

You didn’t see the RB rip off any long runs last night did you?

I saw some guys playing hard last night Houston, Adams, Bryant, Burris, Streater to name a few that had a good game I saw progress last night albeit a small amount of progress

  • Dakota

Reggie will either show that he doesn’t have his head up his azz and there will be changes to the coordinators on DA’s Staff, or Reggie will let it ride, and then we will know Reggie is a failed GM who is too stubborn to admit a mistake.

The answers will come soon enough.

  • RaiderDanny

I say WORD, you aint never told a lie, you aint never told no lie!

  • Once we get the larger field of the CFL, points will come a lot easier. A few more quick bodies on defense and the Raiders will have a shot at the Grey Cup next season. That is if they can get past the Argos.

  • GG

#72…it’s ok, and thanks for your nice words.

I like Reggie, willing to give him another 3-5 years. And realistically he will be given that. But I fear there’s that MO there, and that he’s a bit of a snake in the grass in this regard. He signed off on Allen, the Knapp hire, the schematic changes, and sat back apparently “all systems go” during November, until Mark stepped in to say something.

Reggie must take full blame for this mess like Al had to take blame for his messes. But the MO of entirely stripping this roster of Al holdover players/coaches/staff is there, and that’s what I fear will cause long-term damage, more seasons of 3-13 to 5-11.

And it’s just bad timing too because we do have talent, we were on the brink with just a few tweaks, and we are in need of a new stadium and trying to excite fans to sell out the games.

Mark as a rookie owner has made a mistake. Learning on the job. Reggie has made mistakes as a rookie GM. Allen has made mistakes as a rookie HC. It’s genuinely going to take 5 years to rebuild because it’s going to take these guys that long to learn on the job and get better at it.

  • Palmer has led a team to the playoffs call me when Cam does that!

ESPN called us a MESS! Another “WILD TIRE FIRE! The other whe spoke of Raiders said “GOD BLESS THEM”!

That is kind of the way I see it…..strap in its going to be a long ride.

  • After that great catch by Streater, brainless Knapp calls for a pass. Not all Palmers fault. The play came through the helmet with the green dot.

    Coaching grade D.

Come on Jerry, don’t worry about being buddy buddy with Allen to get quotes and grade him a B-. It says coaching.

Listening to Papa right now discussing prior drafts.

Before the draft JERRY JONES would call Al constantly about trading picks in the draft. He was prepared to send alot of PICKS the Raiders way for DARREN MCFADDEN and Al said HECK NO .. he was keeping that 4th overall pick

  • RaiderDanny

  • Get Gruden and it will cut the rebuilding in half as he knows WTF to do. Not a rookie.

  • “Cam Newton…. 28 games ….. 27 ints…”

When Palmer does that we see a 20 paragraph rant in here by missdik about how horrible he is but if Newton does it he is somehow “REVOLUTIONIZING” the game of football like he invented the forward pass.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Exactly why Mark should torch this regime before they cause further damage. Gruden isn’t Jesus, he has flaws too. But he’ll know how to put together a cohesive competitive staff and roster, and not gut Al talent for his own MO agenda that Reggie/Allen have.

McFadden injured again. What are the odds. He’s more fragile than Glass Schillens. His trade value just took another dump. We’d be lucky to et a 4th or 5th round pick right now. It’s almost not worth trading him now. Reggie should be able to renegotiate his contract down based on average availability per season. Personally, I think we ought to convert him to WR & keep him away from the big kids where he might get banged around a lot. Get him the ball in the open and he might do us some good. He could be our #1 WR if he put is mind and body into the right framework. This might be our best strategy for DMac going forward.
