McDonald grades the Raiders off Broncos game

Beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders off their performance against the Denver Broncos in a 26-13 loss at the Coliseum. Here are McDonald’s grades and comments:

Pass offense
Consecutive passes in the first quarter illustrated the maddening inconsistency of quarterback Carson Palmer (19-for-30, 273 yards, 2 TDs, 1 interception). The first was a perfect 58-yard rainbow to wide receiver Rod Streater. The follow-up was forced to tight end Brandon Myers, sandwiched in bracket coverage. Champ Bailey picked it off in the end zone. Carson giveth, Carson taketh away.
Grade: C

Run offense
The good — Darren McFadden broke loose on a 36-yard run on the first play of the second half, the longest run against the Broncos this season by 12 yards. The bad — the Raiders had two rushing first downs and gained 25 yards on the 15 other runs from scrimmage in the game.
Grade: D

Pass defense
Peyton Manning was 26 of 36 for 310 yards and one touchdown and made some throws that were simply impossible to defend. Three sacks thwarted deep Denver penentration and the Broncos were forced to settle for field goals. Phillip Adams had a diving interception to stop another threat. But there were too many third-down failures.
Grade: C

Run defense
The Broncos had enough control of the game to stay persistent with the run and finished with 140 yards, but they had to work for it with 39 rushes. Knowshon Moreno had 119 yards on 32 carries and scored on a 1-yard run. Andre Carter and Mike Mitchell had tackles for losses on running plays.
Grade: C-plus

Special teams
Mike Goodson’s decision to bring out a kickoff 8 yards deep in the end zone backfired as he was dropped at the 8-yard line. A sack-fumble a short time later swung the game Denver’s way for good. Shane Lechler placed three of his five punts inside the 20-yard line and had a 43.4 net. Denarius Moore gained 8 yards on his only punt return.
Grade: C

Coaching
Curious decision by the Raiders to defer after winning the coin toss, giving Manning the ball to start the game. The Broncos immediately marched 68 yards for a touchdown to start the game, their only extended touchdown drive. The Raiders ended up opening second half with possession while down 13-7 — validating coach Dennis Allen’s decision — but they couldn’t capitalize. Not a lot of issues with strategy, play-calling or emotion. Problems mostly rested with an inferior team.
Grade: B-minus

“Im sorry but i dont see how throwing for 3500 yards means anything at all when you are 3-10.”

I’m sorry, but there are 20 other people + special team guys that are on the team as well.

Good luck if they stay this course! $8 seats and fans walked out at 3qtr! Its so bad! One guy jumped off thje top in a suicide attempt! How much worse could it get???

I think most people in here would like us to start all the bench warmers the 2nd and 3rd stringers and let them play out the season so we can evaluate them…hell why not, losing 56 to 3 cant be any worse than losing 38-17 to New Orleans.

I think we all realize that the season is over and its time to evaluate the younger guys. Starting them is another story but you never know this team is full of surprises.

    We know Mark isn’t happy.

Looking like a circus of crap and the embarrassment on national tv on hall of fame night compounded by the fact he was already ticked off before last night…

Who knows what is going through that pumpkin pie headed mans head right now.

  • http://www.insidebayarea.com/raiders Silverandblack666

9-19 is the only stat that matters and not to mention it is how you judge Palmer therefore its how Cam Newton should be judged.

You can try to twist it and contort it in many ways make you happy but those are the facts old man.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Papa said one more interesting point. Most people think it would just be GRUDEN coming. Yes he says Gruden with the roster would have 3-4 more wins right now.

But he said GRUDEN would be coming with an Entire Staff of well respected experienced coachecs that could help each posistion group. He says coaching is IMPORTANT

Sounds like PAPA really doesnt think shyyt or much of DA

  • RaiderDanny

    Fire someone! Anyone!

  • aking4life

I’ve been reading this blog for a long time and I’m finally ready to comment. I’m a diehard Raider fan and this season has been one of the most painful, but let’s be real THERE IS NO WAY that Reggie or DA should be fired. They are trying to produce “A New Era of Excellence” and the state that the organization was in before they took over wouldn’t allow it to be a year turnaround.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

They even asked howie long on NFL network whats up with his Raiders.

Howie looked embarrassed said he respects and loves the Raiders.. he came on to a team full of futre hall of famers worked.

They asked him about DA/ REGGIE … HOW basically said HE HAS NO CHOICE but to think they will turn things around. IT wasnt very convincing.

Cmon Mark davis.. u are running this ORG into the ground

  • VanHeathen30

Mark thought he had set himself up to avoid blame by hiring a GM…Problem is, that by hiring a complete stiff who happens to be a rookie, the blame is falling back onto Mark and he is taking heat publicly, changing the scheme before changing the players was the first step into the quick sand, the rest is just wiggling in deeper…
Got to get some experience at these upper management positions.

  • JLofty

    Pryor time!

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

It’s an expensive mistake. But Mark needs to blow up the regime he hired before it gets worse. It’s going to continue to get worse for an extended amount of years.

In blowing it up, it will mean having to completely undo the staff that Reggie hired, not just coaches but all the front office, scouts, director of scouts etc.

But if Mark can indeed entice Gruden back, then it’s for the short-term and long-term good. If he can’t get Gruden, then bring Hue back. If neither can happen, then Mark needs to re-address Reggie’s vision and MO, and ensure a coaching clean-out, not player clean-out occurs, and that Reggie is given direction on hiring an experienced high-caliber HC, or former HC.

“Cmon Mark davis.. u are running this ORG into the ground”

Really dude? The organization WAS on the ground when his father passed. We’ve been on the ground since the day Al traded Jon Gruden to the Tampon Bay Fake Pirates. You think Mark Davis has some kind of magic wand or wtf?

Btw, thanks for those Greg Papa updates. Shows what I’m fearing and talking about is real. That Papa sees it too, him being far more inside.

Papa mentioning all the key points that many of us have been bringing up the last few weeks. Further vindication of our arguments in this blog ;)

  • DJ Johnny

Us diehards aren’t even asking for wins at this point. We just want something to hang our hat on that’ll give us hope or SOMETHING to be excited about.

I’m sorry, but for me…people saying “don’t worry DA has got this”, doesn’t do it for me.

Isn’t he the guy who coached us to 3-10 with 6 straight losses now…and 5 of those being outright blowouts?

    What am I missing?

I know, I know….salary cap, no draft picks, unprecedented mess never before seen in the annals of professional sports history..etc. etc. etc.

  • RaiderDanny

Hope Papa knows something! HC-Gruden, OC-Jay Gruden,DC-Monte Kiffen, O-line- Wiz/Wiley, LB coach- Romonowski, QB Coach- Gannon, ST- Fassel(senior)! I would roll with that!

  • VanHeathen30

On the intro to the telecast they showed 1 arial shot and the 3rd deck was empty…
Mark should have borrowed the tarps from the A’s to avoid such a vast amount of empty space. Pathetic!

  • JLofty

GG you want to blow up the blow up? They DID blow it up. Now you want to blow it up AGAIN?!? Do you LIKE double digit losses year after freakin year?
At some point you need to hire a group and let them get the job done….

  • JLofty

@120: that was just the Raider Nation making sure they was GOOD and liquored up before entering the stadium to watch the hot mess…

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Ya dude really he is . why do you think Mark is second guessing DA at this point. Why do you think the rumors have coming out about Raiders/ Gruden talking. Even if its 10 percent true.. still something.

Mark pissed at regression? He should have never just listened to Ron wolf .. he should have interviewd MULTIPLE candidates for GM.. who knows maybe one GM would have told him lets just rebuild the defense for now till we get enough draft picks. Right now Mark is letting his ORG being taken down to a national joke.

It might be 3 years b4 the Raiders get back to 8-8 then what? Dennis Allen is a bronco ..doesnt know anything about divisional rival week. Doesnt even have his team playing with emotion. The reason the players played have way decent is because they were on national tv

  • VanHeathen30

I want to see Professional Managemnt and Coaches brought into stabilize this team….
Waiting for a Rookie GM, with a career based on 18yrs of being an assistant, and a coach that NEVER had Head Coaching Experience on any level, is too much of a reach.

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

#121….if you make a terrible mistake, you need to fix it asap before it gets worse. I’m sure you can find a similar analogy in your life, when you made a big decision, like say moving to a whole new city, moving your family there, or starting a whole new job and all the changes it entailed, or marrying/getting with a woman…but soon after realized it was a terrible mistake and had to blow it up quickly.

  • VanHeathen30

Earlier some one compared Bill Walsh and Jimmy Johnson’s records as first year HC’s in the NFL…both had horrible starts to their NFL careers….
Difference is, BOTH Walsh and Johnson had won at the college level as HC’s…
Walsh got Stanford back on the football map and Johnson Won National Championships at Miami…not an even comparison by any stretch of the imagination.

    lol no twisting needed

I would not hold a 2nd year player to the same standard as a 10 year vet… who would?

    But since you insist

    newton 28 pro games 55tds -32 turnovers 9 wins

    palmer’s last 28 games 42 tds -42 turnovers 9 wins?!?!?

so as you can see a second year pro over his first 28 starts has clearly dominated palmer.

    newton has 13 more tds

    10 less turn overs

    and equal wins

    Newton owns you and palmer.

Something that sticks with me! After Reggie took over and he said he was looking for a Coach a reporter asked” is Gruden on your short list” Reggie had a look of complete confusion as if he never thought of it! In Return said every Coach is on my short list! Baffling?

  • LA to TheBay

Raiders were gonna hire a retread or up-and-comer in 2012. Weren’t after a big money coach with a lot of say-so.

    Mark is getting impatient though.

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

Just keeping the majority or a percentage of players from quitting does not give the coach enough ammo to survive an evaluation at season end.

especially when you factor in, the blow out losses, the defensive collapses, and that is his area of expertise. The out of control players, the penalties, the failure to communicate effectively with players, failure to develop or utilize players, and regression of players that were on the up tick before his arrival.

not to mention the hiring if a useless staff

nope keeping a few guys engaged is hardly a measure of success or security

We’ve got to see TP play. I respect Palmer and appreciate what he brings to the team but last night i saw him consistently deliver the ball late and it cost us time and again. He is decent but he’s too vulnerable to a strong pass rush. TP can move around and make plays with his feet and that’s what we need right now

    =====

Go back and watch the tape occassionally. Note how many times Palmer spots the blitz at the LOS, audibles, and then hits the hot route for a nice gain where the defense abandoned the coverage. Most times, CP takes a big hit as a result. These plays often result in nice gains.

Yes, all things being equal, if you took Palmer’s skill set and added more mobility, it’d be helpful. But TP is not Palmer + speed. TP is Palmer + speed minus footwork, accuracy and the ability to read the defense. The dropoff in those key areas will be far more detrimental than the gain in mobility will be benficial.

So what you’d get with Pryor inserted is a mad scramble when the pressure comes and then a desparate look for the primary WR that, due to lack of audible, is now running the wrong route for that defense. He’ll either force the throw to him creating more picks than CP throws in multiple games, or he’ll run for 7 or 8 yards, eschewing the opportunity to hit the hot route for 12 or more.

If Pryor were RGIII or even Kaepernick, I wouldn’t be making this argument. Those two are definitely bright young men that beat you first with their heads on the read and then with their athleticism. But we’re talking about Pryor, a guy that is failing to pick up the system despite a full offseason and 13 weeks of practice once the season has started now.

For anyone that keeps saying he has all the tools, get over it, he doesn’t. He’s not quick enough mentally for this position at this level, and no amount of practice or crying on this blog is going to change that.

  • RaiderDanny

4-12 at least they were Coached right! Staff stays! Players go!

Reggie ddn’t even know who was on the Raiders roster during his initial presser…
How is he supposed to manage if he doesn’t know our roster,or even the rosters of EVERY team in the NFL…seems like he’s content to stick with what he knows, the Green Bay Practice Squad. Dude has been in over his head since he got here.

#Raiders McKenzie questioned by other front office staffers on why they haven’t cut Seymour yet. Richard with no rush to get back on field.

    ===

Further vindication of us bloggers being right. You have staffers questioning Mr Sit on My Hands McKenzie’s decision making and/or lack of.

If it wasn’t for Mark Davis interview, Reggie hasn’t said or done anything as a GM to better this team, or inspire it thru that November. He is the commander of the Football Operations and has been doing nothing but sitting on his hands staying the course. He should’ve been firing aspects of the coaching staff and promoting someone else. He was way too inactive during the trade period too. He continued to sign-off on many things transpiring that were evident of a season derailing and lockerroom fraying.

  • Priesttj12

For some reason whenever the coaches talk about playing young guys Lienarts name NEVER comes up. I gotta believe there is a reason for that(he doesn’t inspire the coaches)……period

On the other hand whenever they speak about playing young players and preparing for the future of this org. Pryor’s name if not 1st is 2nd out of the COACHES mouth. He knows that position has got to be solidified from his standpoint as well as the GM’s and most importantly the owner.

That is unmistakable and for anyone to say that Pryor is NOT a Pryor-ity is either a liar or extremely ignorant. They have disgusted Pryor ad-nauseum because everyone who matter is intrigued by the young dynamic QB. DENY it if you want but the facts are the facts…….period

Its a good thing the Raiders wear black because watching their games is like going to a funeral.

I hope to see significant roster changes in the offseason, and not just cutting backups and high salary guys.

I want to see 80% of the starting lineup turned over in the next 2 years. I don’t care if they go somewhere else and turn out to be productive(HIGHLY UNLIKELY).

What if Gruden comes back next year and goes 4-12? Should he be fired? Should Reggie?

I know what you’re getting at.

I’ve said the difference from a “hope” standpoint is that a guy like Holmgren, Parcells, or yes… Gruden have a HISTORY of successful HC experience. Heck, Jeff Fisher is treated like a god and he doesn’t even have a ring…he has 6 playoff appearences in his 17 yr’s as coach of the Oilers/Titans…but alas…no rings, but i still consider him a good coach.

Guys saying “I really trust DA to get this done”, and the “skeptics” say “3-10…and what history of success does he have?”

Basically it’s just blind trust not based on anything he’s really accomplished. That’s fine. Maybe people get a “good vibe” from him or think his 20th ranked D is accomplishment enough and a good basis for confidence in him. That’s fine, but understand where guys would have more faith in Gruden (SB, record with Oak. etc.) and be skeptical of what DA is gonna do to save the nation.

What’s so odd in wanting a Head Coach with actual NFL head Coaching experience…
Reggie removes all of Al’s influence from the team and then pulls Al’s favorite move on hiring an HC that has only worked twice overall and only once in Oakland (Gruden , Shanarat)…
