McDonald grades the Raiders off Broncos game

Beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders off their performance against the Denver Broncos in a 26-13 loss at the Coliseum. Here are McDonald’s grades and comments:

Pass offense
Consecutive passes in the first quarter illustrated the maddening inconsistency of quarterback Carson Palmer (19-for-30, 273 yards, 2 TDs, 1 interception). The first was a perfect 58-yard rainbow to wide receiver Rod Streater. The follow-up was forced to tight end Brandon Myers, sandwiched in bracket coverage. Champ Bailey picked it off in the end zone. Carson giveth, Carson taketh away.
Grade: C

Run offense
The good — Darren McFadden broke loose on a 36-yard run on the first play of the second half, the longest run against the Broncos this season by 12 yards. The bad — the Raiders had two rushing first downs and gained 25 yards on the 15 other runs from scrimmage in the game.
Grade: D

Pass defense
Peyton Manning was 26 of 36 for 310 yards and one touchdown and made some throws that were simply impossible to defend. Three sacks thwarted deep Denver penentration and the Broncos were forced to settle for field goals. Phillip Adams had a diving interception to stop another threat. But there were too many third-down failures.
Grade: C

Run defense
The Broncos had enough control of the game to stay persistent with the run and finished with 140 yards, but they had to work for it with 39 rushes. Knowshon Moreno had 119 yards on 32 carries and scored on a 1-yard run. Andre Carter and Mike Mitchell had tackles for losses on running plays.
Grade: C-plus

Special teams
Mike Goodson’s decision to bring out a kickoff 8 yards deep in the end zone backfired as he was dropped at the 8-yard line. A sack-fumble a short time later swung the game Denver’s way for good. Shane Lechler placed three of his five punts inside the 20-yard line and had a 43.4 net. Denarius Moore gained 8 yards on his only punt return.
Grade: C

Coaching
Curious decision by the Raiders to defer after winning the coin toss, giving Manning the ball to start the game. The Broncos immediately marched 68 yards for a touchdown to start the game, their only extended touchdown drive. The Raiders ended up opening second half with possession while down 13-7 — validating coach Dennis Allen’s decision — but they couldn’t capitalize. Not a lot of issues with strategy, play-calling or emotion. Problems mostly rested with an inferior team.
Grade: B-minus

And like I said a couple threads ago…

the rate of rookie HC’s becoming SB champions eventually is more like 1%.

Count how many rookie HCs there have been since the NFL-AFL merger. Count how many eventually won their first SB. Just because someone’s a rookie HC, doesn’t mean they are going to become a success, or that they should be given more years after proving they have completely wrecked the team and lost them. Think Raheem Morris when you think Dennis Allen.

I’m sure the strength of Pryor’s game will be improvisation. Can only get so much of that in practice, which is a far more controlled environment.

    Let him loose.

That’s what the 2012 season has come to.

    Free Pryor.

For some reason whenever the coaches talk about playing young guys Lienarts name NEVER comes up. I gotta believe there is a reason for that(he doesn’t inspire the coaches)……period

On the other hand whenever they speak about playing young players and preparing for the future of this org. Pryor’s name if not 1st is 2nd out of the COACHES mouth. He knows that position has got to be solidified from his standpoint as well as the GM’s and most importantly the owner.

That is unmistakable and for anyone to say that Pryor is NOT a Pryor-ity is either a liar or extremely ignorant. They have disgusted Pryor ad-nauseum because everyone who matter is intrigued by the young dynamic QB. DENY it if you want but the facts are the facts…….period

    Afternoon Fellas,

The Raiders need to make determinations regarding the young ones.

Reggie’s say’s he’s a best player available Guy, but I can’t help but believe that His priorities will be influenced by what He feels the roster is lacking.

QB is obviously the most important part of any successful Franchise.

They need to know if Pryor is the Guy.

    Sooner rather then later.

Speaking of the St. Rams, Jeff Fisher has changed things pretty quick around there.

They were 2-14 last year and 5-6-1 THIS yr. and just got done beating a SB contender last week. THAT is “progression”.

Stl. had 24 guys on that team last yr. who are now OUT OF THE NFL..PERIOD, and here they are.

How did they get here so fast? This team was dead in the water, kind of like we are right now.

Being 2-14 they had the 2nd pick in the draft. Washington traded THREE # 1′s (later picks to them) in exchange for the rights to RG3. Rams have capitalized on those 3 # 1′s with impact players. Sprinkle in some savvy free agent acquisitions as well as a GOOD HC like Jeff Fisher..and…. VOILA….1 yr. turn around and in the playoff hunt and getting better every week.

THIS is what Reggie may have in mind.

He ought to at least think about it.

  • LA to TheBay

And if Pryor is not a QB, he is a freak athlete. Why has’t he seen the field at all.

    TE? WR? Wildcat?

I suppose they want to devote as much time as possible to his development as a QB but seems odd that he can’t get the ball in his hands on a reverse or something.

Stupid to state someone is a priority when the team hasn’t even bothered to suit the guy up until last week.
You haven’t a clue what priority means, do you?

You also have no clue what ad-nauseum means. Prior to two weeks ago, the name pryor hadn’t crossed the coaches lips. Was only after Kap’s success across the bay made reporters ask about different players, including pryor.

The coaching staff knows what Pryor can do.
You obviously don’t have a clue what he can do. If you did, you wouldn’t stick your neck out making these comments, that will come back to bite ya.

Also, Belichick and Gruden’s SB success don’t count as rookie HC’s getting success eventually. They moved on from the team they were rookie HCs off, and won a SB as retread HCs, as vet HCs.

But even if you want to add them in as once being rookie HCs who eventually won a SB, it’s still like 1%

A husband and wife are shopping in their local supermarket.
The husband picks up a case of beer and puts it in their cart.
“What do you think you’re doing?” the wife asks.

But we’re talking about Pryor, a guy that is failing to pick up the system despite a full offseason and 13 weeks of practice once the season has started now
    ————–

    Says who?

Pryor stated he knows 100% of the playbook and coach Flip has been singing his praises. CP talks him up. Reg said he wants to take a look. DA started dressing him, and Knapp said he’s had packages last 2 games.

what am I missing here, fellas?

    =====

You’re missing the same thing Pryor is missing: playing time.

Nothing is more telling than reality, and reality is he has not done or shown enough in training camp, preseason and practices to merit a single play.

This is, and has been since day 1, a very obvious rebuilding year. If they thought he was the future, they’d be playing him plenty by now. Whether or not that they Palmer is the future, they seem to believe that playing him every down is the best thing for the overall development of the team.

I can’t say that I disagree with that. Palmer’s knowledge of NFL football along with his top tier ability to read and adjust puts everyone on the offensive side in a better position to succeed. Whether or not they want to keep him around for one or more seasons (and his contract will have a LOT to do with that decision!) they are leveraging him to grow the other 10 members of the offense.

If this decision were being made at the expense of developing who they believe is the future at QB, then they’d rethink it. This deespite Pryor’s opinion of his own knowledge, which apparently he’s not adequatley demonstrating in practice.

All the facts have shown they don’t see him as the future. If they play him at all this season it’s either as a showcase for possible trade or to convince TP himself that he needs to change position. The read there is what situation they put him in. If it’s a full package go run the offense for a quarter or more, then it’s a future check and step to convince him to change his QB thinking. If it’s a limited, high success package that they don’t repeat enough for teams to get sufficient film on to adjust against, it’s pure showcase.

I believe it will be a showcase if anything. The team desparately needs help at many positions and could leverage whatever they could scalp off another team in trade to build there. It’s using what assets you have in the most productive way.

Or maybe it’s because the GM is racist :-)

This is what cracks me up. People hate this kid for no reason other than he is a threat to the idea of whata QB looks like.

The press has been asking these coaches about Pryor since early in the season the coaches have answering questions about Pryor all year long. They know that answering the questions before the season is over is definitely a Pryor-ity whether you like it or NOT it is a PRYOR-ity that they find out what they have the young QB. I haven’t heard one single question about Leinart all year long. I haven’t heard the coaches mention his name all year long. But it seems every week for the last 10 weeks they’re answering questions about Pryor.

Also I do know what the kid is capable of, now whether you agree with my opinion is another issue. But I know what Pryor is and I know what he can do. I have never said Pryor is a better player than Palmer nor is he now. But he is a very different player and he brings dynamics to the position Palmer does not. Those dynamics can be the difference between winning and losing from week to week. I know that I would have never believed with Palmer w would be sitting here 3-10.

I thought Palmer would do for us what Manning has done for Denver welll it aint close. We need a spark of any kind I think Pryor can provide that spark. I’m not saying he is some star or anything close . What I am saying is he will excite this football team in ways that Palmer has NOT. I am extremely disappointed in Palmer and I’m ready to go in a different direction………..period

Pryor may take 6-10 games to really get his stride but once he gets it this team will be much different than they are now and I’m talking for the better….hate all you want but this team needs Terrelle Pryor. Yes I said it…..this team needs Terrelle Pryor………period

Pryor would have seen at least a snap or two by now with any other team. The truth is, these guys wouldnt know what to do with Pryor anyways. Better off waiting for next year, when we have a different coaching staff.

They cant call plays that McFadden could get loose with, they barely have had Reece involved all season, Ausberry gets no burn all while double TE sets are working all over the league, as well as giving your line some extra help, they havent even tried to call a single screen or reverse for Taiwan Jones since preseason, and hes one of the fastest players in the league, they call way too many passes, wearing out Palmers arm, as well as rendering play action useless when we do run it, have never tried DHB in the slot, even though everyone knows he cant catch and the best bet is to let him get the short passes and rack up the YAC yards, which he is a beast at. Im just going off the top of my head. My point is, the staff doesnt even know what to do with the effective offensive players that they already do let play. What makes you think theyre gonna know what to do with Pryor? These guys have no imagination.
