Raiders waive veteran cornerback, fullback

The Raiders needed a roster spot to make room for the return of suspended middle linebacker Rolando McClain on Monday. The casualty turned out to be veteran cornerback Ron Bartell.
The Raiders also waived veteran fullback Owen Schmitt and signed cornerback Chimdi Chekwa from their practice squad to take Schmitt’s place on the 53-man roster.
McClain’s two-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team ended Monday, which forced the Raiders to make a roster move.
Practice begins in less than an hour. At that time, we’ll see if McClain is back on the field. Head coach Dennis Allen isn’t here today because he is in Texas for the funeral of his father.
McClain isn’t required to rejoin the team until he meets with Allen, which won’t happen today. Allen said he will address McClain’s situation upon his return.
The waiving of Bartell signifies the end of the line for the second of the two veteran cornerbacks signed by general manager Reggie McKenzie in the offseason to take the place of jettisoned starters Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson.
Shawntae Spencer is the other cornerback signed by McKenzie in the hope of finding better options than Routt and Johnson. Spencer played in two games before suffering what turned out to be a season-ending foot injury. He is on injured reserve.
Bartell’s release clears the way for Phillip Adams to get more playing time. He has two interceptions in the past two games in a backup role, including one of Denver’s Peyton Manning on Thursday night.
The Raiders blew out all of their cornerbacks from last season’s roster. As of now, they are without Bartell, Spencer and Pat Lee and faced with the prospect of making over that position in the offseason once again.
If the Raiders welcome back McClain and allow him to play the final three games, it’s likely with the intent of keeping him long enough to see if they can acquire a draft pick in a trade in the offseason.
That makes perfect sense, though it’s not a sure thing that another team will take on a player that hasn’t done much of note in his first three NFL seasons. It’s worth a shot, though, rather than waiving him now and not getting anything in return.
Recently signed Jamize Olawale likely will get a shot to show what he can do at fullback in the final three games now that Schmitt is gone. The Raiders signed Olawale from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad last week.

Dont look now, BUT CAM NEWTON IS BACK!!! this dude is on fire for the last 4 weeks, and looks better than he did last year.

he is now allowed to go under center and has full use of the audible system.

The oc chudzinzki has finally learned that relying too heavily on newton running and not having a solid quick passing facet to his offense is in fact holding newton back. the zone read keeper should only be an occasional accent.

I do believe that palmer should have been benched during his gruesome 6 game losing streak.

The fact that he is still starting in my mind earns the staff failed, and is inconsistent with the way they handle the players.

Chewy is 1 of the young guys who is going to get his shot. Bartell wasn’t performing so they cut him and activated Chekwa.

McClain is a 7.2 million cap hit next year if he is cut today. Nothing to gain by making the move. If they hold off, there is a chance he can be traded for a draft pick, or they can find a way out of the cap hit (which I doubt because it is bonus acceleration, not future money owed). I said as an observer when Valdheer & Wiz were next to each other that we needed to replace the Center going right. Now, Wiz is not a great center, and the rest is garbage. This is why the pass blocking is crap. Also, when Von Miller is thrashing Khalif Barnes, the ‘staff’ did not put another linman out there to seal him off as in “the Jumbo Package” so therefore in my opinion, replace both Guards and Right tackle along with the entire Offensive Staff. CP is not the problem. You could put the best QB in there and they’d get smashed like CP is. The Defense is another HUGE ISSUE………over & out

    99,

With no franchise QB available, what position are you leaning towards supporting with our 1st pick?
    ==============================================
Well, I’m NOT one of those guys that subscribes to ‘best player available’ at ALL times.

I think there are times when you DO draft to fill needs, especially when the call between two players is very close.

But with THIS team – BPA is the ONLY way to go.

That’s bcz there’s not a single area (besides PK) that is solid.

Having said that, it’s my belief that we can make strides on offense simply by replacing Krapp and that a total rebuild is not required on that side of the ball.

Defensively, we need at least a half dozen new starters.

Therefore, I would think this draft should emphasize defense.

If there was a franchise QB available – I’d still go in that direction in a heartbeat.

Don’t care how many holes there are to fill. Palmer definitely isn’t long term and if you want to be a legit contender you’ve got to have the QB.

I’m not absolutely convinced that Geno can’t be a franchise QB, but I have strong reservations about him.

Seems like the 2013 draft should be a ‘get an impact player’ and ‘hole filling’ exercise – and securing the franchise QB might have to wait until we are drafting near the top in 2014 again.

That’s a reasonable 2 year plan and one that could work.

  • The Big Banana

Norv worked wonders with mediocre QB Alex Smith. Would love to have him as OC

  • Charlie

Well, as has been my point for the last decade you build your team through the draft; not with “FREE” agents.

Yes you can find a Gannon once in a long while. Guys like Woodson and Romo were very helpful for a couple of seasons as well. YOU NEED TO HAVE YOUR CORE IN PLACE ESPECIALLY ON THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE BEFORE ANY FREE AGENTS MAKE SENSE!!!!

Do you really think the rest of the NFL is so ignorant that they will just let a big time difference maker leave the team for a very reasonable competitive salary offer??
Reggie did not have a first or second round pick so he took a small gamble of some free agents and lost.
Reggie had no cap room either!

Bartell and Spencer were available because they are very injury prone with eroding skills as a result. Burgess was the same way. It is why the Eagles let him go. His salary demands were ridiculous given his injury issues. He had the same issues with Raiders.
This is the same for Sapp, Kelly, Warren, Joseph, Maryland, Slaughter, Brisiel, Carter, Ellis, Satele and on and on and on.

Building through the draft takes time but it is the only option. Had we drafted well the last ten years we would not be in this predicament. The picks we got from Tampa in the Gruden deal alone were completely wasted.

  • http://ibabuss.com antispy3

So we round the home stretch (finally!) of this debacle of a season. So, now is the time to give Pryor some meaningful playing time.

He doesn’t have to play the entire game in the remaining contests but @ least one third of the remaining offensive snaps. Best scenario would be he plays half of the remaining offfensive snaps. . .

Just look @ what other mobile young QB’s have been entrusted with; running toe option, run/pass options; this is TP’s skill set.

Cam Newton will accentuate this message when the Raiders venture to North Carolina for their matchup against the Panthers. The Raiders game against Tim Tebow last year is another example of what a hybrid QB/athlete can do against an NFL (well, in the case of the Raiders probably not a good example. . .)caliber defense. . .

Time to give all the young Raiders a shot @ distinguishing themselves down the stretch. We already know what the rest of this porous roster can (or can’t) do; now it’s time for the youth movement to make it’s appearance. . .

  • Charlie

No QB or RB will be effective without a solid line in front of him.

We have been doing this same thing for the last ten years. WE NEED TO BUILD OUR IN THE BOX TALENT THROUGH THE DRAFT WITH FIRST AND SECOND ROUND PICKS.
A few on this blog site the Giants and Steelers as team that have not done this. Those that say that have not done the research:

GIANTS/STEELERS DRAFT HISTORY FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS REVEALS THE FOLLOWING:
The Giants drafted 8 “in the box” type players with first or second round picks during the past decade.
What is misleading is when you go back a bit further you find:
    STRAHAN #1
    PETITGOUT #1
    GRAGG #2
The Giants had the good fortune of getting unusual longevity out of VERY HIGH DRAFT PICKS. AS A RESULT THEY HAD A CORE THAT ALLOWED THEM TO FOCUS ON SKILL GUYS WITH HIGH PICKS BECAUSE THEY HAD BUILT THE CORE OF THEIR LINES IN THE LATE 90’S.

The Steelers drafted 12 “in the box” type players with first or second round picks during the last decade.

BY CONTRAST THE RAIDERS DRAFTED 7 IN THE BOX TYPE PLAYERS WITH HIGH ROUND PICKS. THEY ALSO TRADED AWAY THREE HIGH ROUND PICKS THREE OF THEIR 20 HIGH ROUND PICKS DURING THAT TIME. MOST WERE ALL AVERAGE TO POOR PICKS. BRAYTON,HOWARD,GALLERY,GROVE,McCLAIN. WE CAN BE GENEROUS AND SAY THAT HOUSTON AND WIZ II WERE SUCCESSFUL.
THE MORAL OF THE STORY IS THAT SUCCESSFUL WINNING FRANCHISES BUILD THE CORE OF THEIR LINES WITH FIRST AND SECOND ROUND PICKS. IF THEY MISS THEY KEEP DOING IT TILL THEY GET IT RIGHT.
THAT IS WHAT THE RAIDERS USED TO DO AND THEY GOT AWAY FROM IT FOR THE LAST DECADE.
ANYONE SAYING THAT IT IS UNWISE TO USE TOP PICKS ON “IN THE BOX TALENT” IS NOT KNOWLEDGABLE ABOUT RAIDER HISTORY OR THE GAME:
    Conners #2 Schuh #2 Upshaw #1 Thoms #1 Buehler #2 Villapianao #2 Korver #2 Johnson#2
    Lawrence #2 Millen #2 Mosebar #1 Pickell #2

  • Coach456

It does not matter which qb takes the field – The coaching staff has been inept from the beginning. The lack of imagination and coaching to a players’ strengths should not be over looked. Palmer may have cost the team a chance to win a game or two at best – He is not the problem nor would he have been the solution – Too many 3 and outs fall on the offensive coordinator – And too many dropped passes fall on the young receivers. Winning the games against the Falcons and the Bucs would not make this a playoff team.

Still, when you’re drafting near the top and a franchise QB is available – you take him.

Regardless of how many holes you have to fill on the Lines or anywhere else.

The only exception to this rule is if you already have a franchise QB. In that case, it’s ok to trade down and get more picks.

I know you want to take a lineman early and I don’t have a problem with that.

But if I’m a GM and see a player that I love at another position, I’m not taking a lineman that I like less just to follow the protocol of building the lines first.
