McClain back on the field with Raiders

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, December 12th, 2012 at 11:51 am in Oakland Raiders.

Rolando McClain was back on the field and practicing with the Raiders Wednesday, apparently having worked out his issues with coach Dennis Allen.

McClain served a two-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team after being ejected from practice Nov. 28 after a reportedly “heated’’ argument with Allen.

He then made disparaging remarks about the organization on his Facebook page, but had removed the posts by the middle of the day.

Last Friday, the day after the Raiders lost to the Denver Broncos 26-13, Allen said he would meet with McClain before making a determination on whether he would be reinstated to the roster.

McClain was taken off the reserve/suspended list Monday while Allen was in Texas attending the funeral of his father.

ESPN originally reported McClain would be waived.

How much McClain will play, if at all, remains to be seen over the final three games of the season. Allen will be available to the media following practice.

McClain had already lost his spot in the nickel defense to rookie Miles Burris after the fourth game of the season, at which time he also relinquished play-calling duties to strong side linebacker Philip Wheeler.

Omar Gaither has started as the middle linebacker in the 4-3 defense over the past two weeks.

Before the team broke into team sessions, at which time the media is excused, McClain was going through drills with linebackers and defensive linemen. At one point, he was carrying the ball as a running back while defenders went through drills positioning themselves in the proper gaps.

Players who were not at practice Wednesday were strong safety Tyvon Branch (neck, ankle) and defensive tackle Christo Bilukidi (illness).

Defensive tackle Richard Seymour was on the field for his second straight practice after missing five games with a hamstring strain. Running back Darren McFadden looks at full strength and has made the last two practices after tweaking his injured right ankle in the fourth quarter against Denver.

How about instead of trying to get guys to fit Greg Knapps offense, we just get rid of Greg Knapp?

    ********

Isn’t that what we have all been saying? But we may not get our wish this time. The need to stress committment to coaches and continuity could well be the party line this offseason. They don’t want to be seen as kneejerk reactionists like the last decade. I don’t like Knapp either. I want him fired too. But blog opinion and $2.41 will still only get you a tall dark roast coffee at Starbucks.

  9. raiderjhawk Says:

I remember how let down I feel when I heard that Knapp was coming back…

I imagine that if the Raiders really were dumb enough to sign Alex Smith I would feel like jumping off a bridge.

Maybe the Raiders are legally bound to include him on practices but will still have him as a healthy scratch on Sunday? Maybe it’s all to keep the lawyers at bay?

  13. JONGRUDEN2013 Says:

The right direction?…Rolando disrespects the head coach,..then blasts the team on Facebook,…after giving him a two week vacation hes allowed back in uniform,..the right direction?…its clear now the Raiders have a wimp for a coach.

I feel your pain Big Banana, I’m just trying to look at the bright side. I think Reggie is trying to rid the locker room of the guys that are causing us to lose every year. Eventually we’re going to get a consistant football team.

your take doesnt matcht match the 19/32 59.4 cmp% he posted.

You must have missed his 72 yard perfectly thrown rocket shot to criner, that had as much “zip’ as you are going to see in the nfl, and he did on the run.

Did you have the sound down when he payed the lions? Gruden pointed out on more than one occasion how pryor WENT THROUGH HIS READS AND FULL RPOGRESSIONS. you probably didnt watch at all.

pryor also threw receivers open by using back shoulder technique, and manipulated the secondary with eyes and created passing lanes.

sorry but the game film and numbers simply contradict what you are trying to say about him.
    ************
You obviously didn’t watch it. BOTH of his long TD’s to Criner were prayers that Criner made plays on. Pryor said himself that they were ducks and that Criner really saved his ass on those. The 76 yarder was thrown about 20 yards from the LOS and it was an overthrow, Criner made an amazing finger tip catch and did the rest himself. The other 39 yarder was an ill advised underthrown into coverage that Criner also made an outstanding play on.

Feel free to watch them again, and judge for yourself

    http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2012082553/2012/PRE3/lions@raiders#menu=highlights&tab=analyze

Oh and without those 2 plays, Pryor was 17/30 56.6% completion (56% isn’t very good, contrary to mistics opinion) for 136 yards. Thats 8 yards per completion. Also not very good. Like I said those 2 plays alone totally skewed the stat line. Take them away and suddenly Pryor is pretty mediocre. I would NEVER call 17/30 for 136 yards and 0 tds ‘outstanding’
    ==========

lol still trying to take plays off the board as if they never happened.

First off If criner made a finger tip catch the ball had to be within his reach. so clearly pryor deserves half of the credit for throing the ball where criner could get it. this is the same argument you made when jc hit ford to beat kc the old “he bailed him out” argument. Didnt hold water then doesnt now.

Even if you did take them off (in you bizzaro alternate universe) the numbers left behind are still solid for a a guy that is seeing the field for the first time.

Any other rookie qb posting those numbers would greatly encourage the staff and team, and would warrant more playing time. ask ponder gabbert locker and kappy.

I diagree that 8 yards per completion is “bad” in fact that is outstanding

    here are the top ten

    Robert Griffin III, 8.28

    Cam Newton, 8.26

    Alex Smith, 7.98

    Peyton Manning, 7.89

    Tom Brady, 7.74

    Matt Ryan, 7.70

    Josh Freeman, 7.56

    Russell Wilson, 7.55

    Drew Brees, 7.53

    Aaron Rodgers, 7.53

where is carson palmer on this list? # 17

so you can clealry see that the nfl considers 8 yards per pass very good.

By the way did you notice who tops the list rgIII and newton

wilson & freeman also in the top ten along with names we expect like manning brady brees and rodgers.

    “not really

“on the slave plantation some slaves had privileges. They ere allowed to eat scraps form masa’s table, they were giving occasional time off, and even had thier pick of slave women at times.”
    _______________________________________________________

They didn’t have the most important “privilege,” one that any athlete has, the freedom to walk away. No one makes a pro football player chose to play football.
    ___________________________________________________

“Not much difference in the context that owners are hundreds of millions and billions in some cases.

a few million is nothing to them, its scraps from the table.”

Oh, get real. Now you’re playing the class card, pitting millionaire and multimillionaire players against owners who are even richer? Jesus.

BTW, these modern day references to “massahs” and to slaves never make references to the origins of slavery for the black people who were brought in chains to this hemisphere: other blacks from other tribes captured them and sold them into slavery for big bucks.

Nor do the commenters who love to use slavery references bother to refer to the fact that the practice of snatching people from other tribes is still very much alive in huge parts of Western Africa, that children are regularly trapped like an animal and then sold into other tribes to serve their masters. Not a white man around, mind you.
    ==============

This is a popular use of word play designed to take the weight off the shoulder of the white supremacist that committed the atrocities known as the trans Atlantic slve trade.

The trans atlntic slave trade can in no way be compared to people that were captured by neighboring ethnic groups in afrika during war.

During war between neighboring ethnic groups, the losing tribe would be absorbed by the winner and a assigned a labor class. usually this involved a manual labor, farming, building cleaning and so on. These captured prisoner of war were NEVER FORCED TO GIVE UP THEIR NAMES OR MARRIAGE RIGHTS, THEY WERE NOT BEATEN AND MURDERED OR RAPED. THESE CAPTURED PEOPLES WERE NEVER BARRED FROM PARENTING OR EDUCATION OR FORCED TO GIVE UP THEIR COURTSHIP, KINSHIP OR RELIGIOUS PRACTICES.

they NEVER PLACED IN A BOAT ON TOP OF ONE ANOTHER LIKE SARDINES ANS SHIPPED ACROSS THE OCEAN TO LAND WHERE THEY WERE A SEVER MINORITY.

even though the word slavery is used to describe it , it simply doesnt compare to the atlantic slave trade of the white supremacist.

Nor can the the sell outs that traded their so called slave to Europeans be held in the same disdain as the white supremacist. Those few isolated sell outs had no idea what would happen to the people they gave up, and were fooled. they simply had no concept of that kind of mistreatment of human beings, even their defeated enemies in war.

The trans atlantic slave trade of white supremacist stand alone as the single most disgusting epoch in human history.

That’s the difference between the 49ers and Raiders–we are still stuck heading in the wrong direction with the inmates running the asylum, while Harbaugh takes crap from no one. Allen has to go and I am none to impressed with Reggie. I have a tough time believing in him given how inarticulate he is.

Richard Seymour was considered a leader on defense, no matter what is said about him in here. We needed some kind of leadership on the defense, and I don’t think it is any coincidence that the wheels really came off when he was out of the lineup.

I explained Seymour and Branch in my last post. Hindsight looks bad on Brisiel, but he was one of the highest graded guards in the league last year. He blocked for the best running game in the league. He is a perfect fit for the system we switched too. It was a solid signing that made sense at the time. Brisiel has played like crap since coming here, but that doesn’t make reggie an idiot.

None of those geniuses thought it would take the colts very long at all to rebuild, they were a perenial 10 win team, that had a bad year for no other reason than losing Peyton Manning. That Colts team was all Manning. Their running game was horrible in Addai’s last years. They reloaded this year with rookie TE’s and WR’s TY Hilton and got some good production from Donnie Avery. Wayne has always been a beast, I’ll give you that. But in those last Manning years, he personally lifted them to 10 win status.

Do you think the Patriots would draft DONTA HIGHTOWER out of BAMA and put him as a MIKE LINEBACKER in a 4-3??

    NOOO only the raiders do

still no comments on this?? hmmm
    ========================================

I’ll comment: no they don’t do that. Al saw a guy who “looks like a guard” at there at Mike. Al was a big “looking good coming off the bus” personnel man. Too bad that strategy did not translate well onto the playing field.

You want smaller faster Mikes in an even front. Why he chose McClain is anyone’s guess. But even so, McClain as a 255 lb guy should be able to shed someone. To this point I have never seen him shed anyone. I don’t think he would be very good in an odd alignment based on his play here.

    ===========================================

Pat Lee wouldn’t run defend as a corner. Just watch the Doug Martin runs and you will see what I mean. Bartell looked awful out there. He is done. Things get said in the heat of the moment, but even so, as I wrote yesterday, having an overall number one be a bust hurts a franchise for a minimum of five years. Having an overall 8 eat it as well? That is NOT going to be good. If we can some mid round pick for him we might be able to recoup some of the loss. It does make some sense in the longer range outlook.

I wonder how much of letting Rolando back on the roster is to prevent further degradation in his trade value. If they flat out publically benched him it would send a stronger message to the league about his problem child status and diminish what thy could possibly get for him in the offseason market.

Then again, that presumes that he hasn’t already done enough damage to his image to make him not worth his current contract and currently untradeable. Teams could be waiting for the cut and to sign him on the cheap as the only option.

Reggie will almost surely trade down. We are missing a 2nd and a 4/5th round (not sure which based on Curry’s playing time last year). If we can get the top pick, he can trade down and still stay in the top 15, and pick up the missing picks and maybe more. This team has too many needs – CB, DE, LB, DT, OT that getting that 1 impact guy vs 2-3 starters is not worth it at this point. I wouldn’t be surprised if Reggie traded down twice in the 1st and pick even more picks. He made a career on picking gems in the middle rounds.

This a strong defensive draft. Lots of quality. Ideal situation is the Raiders get the top pick – trade for a top 15 pick, a high 2nd, high 3rd, 5th rounder, and a conditional for 2014. Trade down *again* for a top 20 pick – get another 2nd and another 3rd this year. Reggie then gets 10 picks total this year, including 5 picks in the top 90. Add another 6-7 players from UFA and we could have 6 quality starters and 6-10 backups/project and this team will look alot different next year.

Before the season started, those of us who knew that we wouldn’t be a good football-team saw the hadnwriting on the wall when they brought Knapp back, and he decided to go to ZBS. Old proud Raiders like Steve Wiesniewski knew we were gonna be bad. (Common Sense)Why would you re-hire an OC that had playcalling taken away from him when he failed the 1st time here. Wiesniewski didn’t want to experience this tragedy thats happened, he knew this thats why he quit.

Now for all of these people that want to keep DA here, (and if he stays)this stuff aint gonna get any better, the players checked out along time ago…when these laughable coordinators input offensive-and-defensive schemes that were junk.

Not true, Reggie didnt have to keep seymour, franchise branch then sign him long term , or sign Briesel to a 20 mil contract that when hes cut next year he hits our cap by 2.7 mil. Those were just bad decisions that were unnecessary
i wonder how long all those geniuses predicted it would take the colts to rebuild. Why cant you just admit reggie had a bad year. Does it make you feel powerful to ignore the truth?Reggie had a bad year, and he’ll get a chance to redeem himself in 2013, but dont think for a moment anyone should buy into a 3-5 plan and allow Reggie excuse after excuse
    ****************
I explained Seymour and Branch in my last post. Hindsight looks bad on Brisiel, but he was one of the highest graded guards in the league last year. He blocked for the best running game in the league. He is a perfect fit for the system we switched too. It was a solid signing that made sense at the time. Brisiel has played like crap since coming here, but that doesn’t make reggie an idiot.

None of those geniuses thought it would take the colts very long at all to rebuild, they were a perenial 10 win team, that had a bad year for no other reason than losing Peyton Manning. They weren’t anywhere close to the situation we are in. Not a valid comparison at all. They added an outstand QB to a perennial 10 win team, and surprise, they are a 10 win team again.
    ————–
show me one expert who said colts would be a playoff team after going 2-14 and losing manning and having a new coach. give me proof
Reggie made decisions , they just havent worked out. Briesel signed a 20 mil contract, the texan spent 20 mil on danieal manning. they let briesel go because they made the right decision. so many of reggie’s decisions havent been right. Thats the fact. If you want to ignore the facts and rely on excuses thats your right.

    ******************************************************
I agree with this. Not because I think he has much pass rush ability (i.e. quick burst, feet, bend, edge rushing like Wimbley), but because the job duties of the SAM fit his body type and the type of player he is. Take on the TE, set the edge, take on the FB, blow up the run plays, occasionally drop back into deep zone when absolutely necessary, and let someone else more competent and quick make the tackle from the MLB or WLB position.

He’s strong and big, but too big and slow to play MLB. He should have been tried at SAM a long time ago. Its rediculous.

I think his body and size can be useful as this 4-3 SLB or he could go back to his natural position in the middle of a 3-4 if we draft a bonafid NT to keep him “clean”. That’s how he became a top 10 pick after all. A 3-4 defense with a big personal protector up front in Saban’s defense.

Ray Lewis forced the Ravens draft Haloti Ngata. He spoke at length at the time about how important that NT is for allowing him to be the player he is.

    LEINART? pluhhhese lmao.. gtfoh

Their goal this year was to torture and embarrass us as much as humanly possible this yr.

    They have succeeded.

EXPECT to see Leinart if Palmer were to go down.

It makes no logical sense. THAT IS WHY it would happen.

    3-10…These guys are the best.

I wonder how many NFL owners watched their team go 3-13 or 4-12 and brought back the entire coaching staff and the gm

I don’t expect him to even draw a low draft pick. I think he’ll eventually be released and picked up. But their gonna try anyways.

    178,

Colts also have a 1st yr. GM, AND a 1st yr. HC…who isn’t even coaching…the assistant to the 1st yr. HC is.

When is anybody going to expect better?

    =============

But they have the best QB to be drafted no.1 since Peyton Manning.

Thats the difference a QB makes paired with the right free agents and a defensive specialist from Ravens.

Reggie assuming Seymour was a leader was a dumb mistake. He has virtually done nothing for us other than his 1st game vs. SD and the blocked kick in KC last Christmas Eve.

Reggie just traded Rolando and our 1st round pick to Gb for 5 practice squad players.

seymour is a tough guy but when has he ever been a leader. He played in more games than practices in his raider career. he probably doesnt know the names of half the guys on the team.

And the Jacoby Ford game vs the Chiefs. He was all over Jamal Charles. And the 59-14 Donkey game. Seymour has had a couple of great games with the Raiders. Don’t be upset because he got old, he didn’t force anyone to give him a contract.

Did someone say there were 9 teams, and possibly one playoff team, that would like to have McClain?

Do those unnamed teams know something about McClain Junior and the Raiders don’t?
Is the ZarMac such a vengeful punishing type?
    Why even reinstate him, then?
Do they really believe that by having him suited up or playing on special teams is going to increase his trade value?
Wouldn’t the team that trades for him inherit his contract? Why would they pay so much for a player that’s considered unworthy?

I believe McClain was probably upset by being singled out and scapegoated, according to Kelly, for a lousy defensive scheme brought on by Junior and Tarver.

Has anybody really taken a look at the way the defensive plans and game preparation were mishandle by the staff?
I know it’s very easy to blame talent, but how long is the staff going to get a pass?

More than enough times we have seen a coach’s stubbornness of trying to fit talent to his system hurt the team’s chances of being successful.
Was this season more than a rebuild a time to have Junior impose his will with the ZarMac’s tutelage?

As I said before, Marky gave the keys to the Nation to the ZarMac, it’s all on him and he’d better get it done because the Nation will definitely make him pay. Get it done or get out of OakTown.

  211. beach Says:

Alex Smith and Greg Knapp. What a freakin’ disaster that would be!!!

  212. beach Says:

I agree with your last statement, Judge. That is why we have to rebuild. Too many washed up veterans were given prime-time contracts.

his is a popular use of word play designed to take the weight off the shoulder of the white supremacist that committed the atrocities known as the trans Atlantic slve trade.

The trans atlntic slave trade can in no way be compared to people that were captured by neighboring ethnic groups in afrika during war.

    >> White people just get sick of crybabies like YOU whining about atrocities hat didn’t even happen TO YOU. I’;m sorry you’re such a small minded sheep. it’s not my fault that you can’t think of yourself as something more than a victim. but the world needs ditch diggers too so get your shovel smart guy. and if you think all of us white folk are nazis or Klan members be a man and say it in plain english. its only a blog tough guy.
