Raiders quick notes

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, December 12th, 2012 at 2:41 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Some post practice and locker room notes before moving on to the print product . . .

– Raiders coach Dennis Allen wasn’t shedding any light on the details of what went on regarding the suspension of Rolando McClain. Allen did say, however, McClain had been informed he was being demoted to being a substitute linebacker and special teams player, and that’s the role he will continue in moving forward.

In other words, McClain got angry at the news he wasn’t starting _ he’d already lost his spot in the nickel defense before the Atlanta game _ and that precipitated the incident.

McClain was not present during the open locker room period.

Allen did not directly respond to McClain’s Facebook rants _ one of them had to do with playing for a “real team” _ saying things are said in the heat of the moment.

– Defensive tackle Richard Seymour practiced for the second straight day and Allen expects him to play. Seymour said his condition is about “same as Monday.”

– Allen said he expected Terrelle Pryor to play against Kansas City. Pryor has been active and had a set of plays to run in each of the last two games but hasn’t played.

– Defensive tackle Christo Bilukidi (illness) and strong safety Tyvon Branch (neck, ankle) did not particpate in practice.

– No worries about running back Darren McFadden _ he was a full participant in practice.

What you mean it doesn’t sound encouraging? They will give guys chance when they show something in practice, Adams got his oppurtunity,he will probably start the game, Streater has stepped up, he will be ready to start games next year if we bring back same group, they won’t just give guys chances if they think it will only hurt them or in games we’re behind , they don’t want to hurt TP by asking him to do too much, as much as they want to see what players do , they want to protect them too

It would be nice to get a package to move down in the first round but we need a second rounder in exchange.

It would be nice to get a top ten Dlineman but two dlineman in the top 60 is what we need now given our excessive deterioration.

That leaves us with a 3rd rounder for an OT.
If Bergstrom can take a guard spot (Carlisle retiring) we at least are substantially better on both lines with much less money involved.

Kelly, Seymour, Barnes, McClain and Shaunessy are gone while freeing up much needed cap space.

Not a big mystery regarding Mr Davis and Marcus.

Mr Davis felt it was a PRIVELEGE to be associated with the Raiders. He was old school. Red Aurebach with the Celtics was the same way.
In defense of Mr Davis he paid players in the top quartile of what was typical in the day BUT HE EXPECTED MAXIMUM LOYALTY!!!!!

Marcus got involved in some contract issues that left Mr Davis feeling disrespected. For as loyal as Mr Davis could be, he could also be vindictive to a fault.
It also happened with Gruden and the salary Jon wanted.

Dave Casper and Snake also ran into this in their later years. Mr Davis had a hard time letting go of players when they played at HIS PRICE. He would become very nasty if he felt a player was being greedy.

    Cam newton vs terrelle pryor

Cam and pryor were both unbelievable athletes in college, easily able to outrun and over power defenders, and were the best players on the field every saturday.

Cam was a far more polished passer in college, and this is where I would often give cam the edge when people used to compare them.

Even though many thought cam would never make it, i saw a kid with a beautiful nfl ready arm, that only needed to refine his mechanics.

Pryor on the other hand struck me as a kid that did not make enough progress as a passer in college. We now know that partly tressel’s offense was ony designed to let pryor beat teams with his world class athleticism, and not much time was put into polishing pryor for the pro game. We also know that pryor was immature and may not have put in all of the effort he could have to maximize his talent and time as a buckeye.

pryor left school and joined the nfl almost through the back door, and was immediately smacked with a dubious suspension. he was humbled and went to work.

Watching him in the pre season, he worked out that throwing motin and was much better with his feet in the pocket. What really jumped out though is that almost every single pass he made was thrown into SINGLE COVERAGE. he was able to make the right reads and identify where to go with the football, and that is huge.

pryor doesnt need to be the flashy passer that newton or griffin is. pryor can adapt a game managment style of low risk football, because of his electric play making ability.

I would be happy to pryor keep the turn overs to a minimum even if it meant taking a few less risk, and complete in the neighbor hood of 55% of his pass attempts. this would be very good for a qb seeing his first nfl game action.

i now believe that although he isnt the passer that newton is he is good enough, and will get better with time. we already know they favor running the ball, with pryor having a bit more speed, and newton with a bit more size.

Im certain davis and big mack will pay very very very close attention to newton when he is on the field in a couple of weeks. i hope pryor can do enough in this upcoming game to get more snaps ( the really should start him) vs the panthers.

pryor is a special talent like newton or rgIII, the kind of qb that can score a td on any snap from any point on the field, with his arm or his legs.

Get the kid on the field already….geeez

I presume Rolando is being kept around for business reasons.

Hopefully we won’t have these sorts of issues with High picks in the future.

Tp can be seen locally via the web. ATDHE I believe.

    ^^^^^^^^^
Yeah. McLain is being kept around for two reasons. To not give him what he wants and to hopefully get a draft pick out of some team around draft time.

This team is going nowehere with DA, Knapp, Tarver and Hoffman.

I like Tarver, think he has upside. He is not ready to be a a pro DC yet though, just like DA is not ready to be a pro head coach.

The way DA and Knapp have not used Pryor at all as a weapon and to mix it up on offense and keep D’s off balance is a joke as well.

13 million for Palmer sounds crazy. It’s out of line.

If I’m RM, I ask him to take a significant cut. I’m talking about a 40% pay cut.

Palmer won’t be happy. Probably won’t agree to that large of a cut.

Anyone know what kind of guaranteed money we owe CP ?

Either way, if CP doesn’t want to accept a more reasonable salary – that leaves two options.

    Cut him or trade him.

Trade would be preferable of course, but honestly we’re not going to be able to get much in return unless he agrees to take less dough elsewhere.

QBs are at a premium in the NFL, and you never want to dump a good one.

But the Raids have to accept the reality that they’re a 4 win team with CP.

That same type of unacceptable result can be obtained for far less money.

The question that needs to be asked is, if you keep CP and his bloated salary around – can he get the Raids to 10 wins ? Is he a guy that will still be capable of playing at a high level, in say, 2014, with a presumably better supporting cast ?

My personal opinion is that it’s really not feasible to have a long term strategy built around CP.

Problem is I don’t see a viable alternative at this time.

Having said that, I would not be opposed to rolling the dice and bringing in guys who will probably turn out to be ‘stop-gaps’ until a franchise QB is finally, mercifully obtained.

We’ve got to rebuild the defense and can Krapp to get competitive. That’s with or without Palmer.

We’re still gonna need a franchise QB to win Lombardis.

Hmm…CP is still far better than over half the QB’s in the league.

If this team had a legit running game and a decent defense, CP would look that much better because it would equal more wins.

This is why I get so agitated with Hue being prematurely let go.

Hue made this team an effective running team and the passing game was unpredictable and explosive.

All that was needed was an improved defense.

But rookie owner Davis and rookie GM decided to tear it all down and try and completely rebuild when it didn’t need to be done.

Then hiring a young rookie head coach to replace a guy who was a better rookie head coach were just all bad moves.

    ///////////////////////////

He didn’t care about being bigger than the raiders. Bo Jackson was bigger than any athlete at that time and Al called Bo to wish him happy birthday every year until he died

  • Charlie

No question that after our 2012 Super Bowl loss, Mr Davis should have turned the reigns over to a GM.

He clearly lost the ability to draft well although much of that blame also falls on the antiquated scouting staff that we employed. (It still gets back to Davis).

What is interesting to note that it was the TANDEM of Ron Wolf and Davis that made the Raiders great. Those two laid the foundation of perhaps the greatest Olines ever to be assembled. (Many of you may not be old enough to realize that in the Immaculate reception game the Raiders started 4 Hall of Fame O lineman:)

Shell, Upshaw, Otto AND Bob Brown(spent most of his years with the Eagles). George Buehler at RG was the only non HOF player. I do not think that ever has been or will be done again.
The problem was we were going against perhaps the greatest Dline assembled as well.
That was not an accident. All teams in the AFC at that time knew that if you could not beat Oakland’s OLINE you would not beat Oakland.

Perhaps you guys now might better understand my passion for building both lines but especially the Oilne.
With a dominant Oline you will win the majority of your games.

  • Charlie

    Sorry, 2002 Super Bowl loss.
