Branch back at practice, still no Seymour

By Steve Corkran
Friday, December 14th, 2012 at 11:25 am in Oakland Raiders.

Strong safety Tyvon Branch returned to practice today, and he now factors into the mix for the Raiders game plan against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Branch is battling ankle and neck issues of late. If he can’t play Sunday against the Chiefs or he aggravates an injury, Mike Mitchell will take his place.
Defensive tackle Richard Seymour is the only player unable to practice today. Therefore, it’s likely that he won’t play Sunday and miss a sixth straight game.
Seymour suffered a hamstring injury against the Buccaneers on Nov. 4 and hasn’t played since that day. He returned to practice this week, only to suffer a “setback” Thursday, in coach Dennis Allen’s words.

– Still no official word from the Raiders on whether Sunday’s game sold enough tickets for the game to be televised locally.
The Raiders were granted a one-day extension by the league, which bodes well for the Raiders selling at least 85 percent of the tickets needed to avert a blackout.
Six of Oakland’s first seven regular-season home games were televised locally. The only game that failed to sell enough tickets was the one against the Browns on Dec. 2.
Fourteen of the past 15 home games were televised locally.

– Interesting item from ESPN’s Adam Schefter today:
Schefter said the Seattle Seahakws MVP jsut might be assistant head coach Tom Cable. Yes, that Tom Cable.
Here’s what Schefter wrote:
“Ask any Seattle player, and he will speak of how important Cable has been. He has helped give Seattle its physical mindset. (Running back Marshawn) Lynch even waited for reassurance that Cable would be back for 2012 before he agreed to re-sign.”
Schefter opined that Cable is on track to be considered for another head coaching gig in the NFL based on the wonders he has worked with the Seahawks.

I would agree. But knowing this is one of the most dysfunctional situations in all of sports and Shaw’s record is impeccable, why would Shaw come here knowing he is in a very good situation as it is and would get his pick of offers?

Just like many predict that we have guys who will be cut in the offseason who probably won’t be in the NFL next year, I hope DA sees that Knapp wouldn’t fetch an OC job in the NFL next year also.

I know the league is a fraternity and HCs will give a fired guy a job so that guy could save face. So knapp might be a QB coach for a team and polish those backups footwork. But he will not be an OC for anyone next year.

Ford has played in 8 out of a possible 32 games. And he hasn’t played all that well in those 8, special teams aside. Seems like he is just keeping a roster spot from someone who actually is productive.

  • DaRaiders022

Knapp should be expecting the next flight out of Oakland! There has been absolutely no progression in this offense during the season! He makes these brash and direct comments to save his ass from being fired! If Allen and McK bring him back next season, we will continue to go NOWHERE! We need to move on from this disasterous season and it starts with evaluating the performance of players and coaches! Measured results tell the story, not the week-after-week BS we hear from Knapp and others who will need a job after this season!

lol at cable being hc material and the “wonders’ he has worked.

The truth is cables line has not pass protected well at all, this year or last year.

Covering up the failings of the pass protection is the mobilty of russell wilson. If matt flynn was the qb sack numbers would be through the roof.

The run blocking has been good, and even that has been bolstered by marshawn lynch.

To be fair, Cable’s best year was when Hue was calling the Offense. Even Cable was willing to give up on the ZBS for the sake of the team. Probably wasn’t up to him, but he didn’t whine or complain, just kept coaching.

Cable may not have been the long term solution at HC, but he gave it his all. We was willing to change when thing weren’t working. He cared. He’s a very good Offense line coach and it shows. I’m happy for the guy

    And therein lies the rub!

It doesn’t matter if it’s JFord, DMC, Seymour, Shaughnessy, and on and on…

When the Team invests so heavily in Players (and I don’t mean financially)…where we count on them to produce at a high level, and to at least be there when they’re counted upon…then we need a few of those Players to come through.

No, injuries aren’t usually the fault of the individual Player. But…they do affect entire Teams, and seasons.

JFord is as mercurial as DMC is. His health is, also.

Criner and Streater? Don’t look now, but both those kids could be starting next year, the potential they show is off the charts. DeMoore is a natural, and DHB is good and getting better.

If Jacoby’s not healthy enough to be used returning kicks, he’s going to have a difficult time beating-out those four for playing time…let alone journeymen like Hagan, or any other new faces we bring in.

The Raiders could be set @ WR for years already. That’s a very good thing, considering we need so many other holes filled elsewhere.

All this nonsense about Rolando McClain being better suited in a 3-4, with a great linebacker next to him and a dominating NT in front of him is a joke. Rolando McClain sucks period.

A good football middle/inside linebacker is a good football linebacker regardless of scheme. Look at no other than Ray Lewis.

Back in 2000, the Ravens ran a 4-3 with Ray Lewis as the Middle Linebacker. For the past 6 years or so, the Ravens have been using the 3-4 with Ray Lewis as one of the inside linebackers.

Other notable linebackers with success in both schemes include Jonathan Vilma and Takeo Spikes.

Some you in the minority think he is better suited to play in a 3-4? You need to have more speed to cover more ground! Look at the other Bay Area’s team.

My point is? Rolando was drafted in the 1st round to be a dominating linebacker, regardless of scheme. A good football player is a good football player regardless how you want to spin it.

Rolando McClain is a wasted pick.

I rue the day we counted on DMC to be our #1 RB, but his spectacular talent makes the hope understandable.

However, the McClain pick is one of the worst the Raiders have ever made. His head, heart, and his giant weak body have all failed us.
