Miller just drilled Flacco. Amazing crop of pass rushers in recent years: Watt, Miller, Aldon Smith, JPP, Clay Matthews.

Unfortunately for us, I don’t necessarily see a guy anywhere near that caliber in this year’s draft. Damontre Moore from A&M is probably the best of the bunch, but I tend to think he’s just OK and not elite. Maybe a 10 sack a year guy, not 20.

    ————

Does he look any less impressive than Tuck, Uminyiora, or JPP did in college?

    I dont think so.

My point being, it’s going to take a couple B+ DE’s and then they will look like world beaters. All the guys you mentioned that are elite, also happen to play on some pretty talented teams.

I wouldn’t take him there either. Scouts are questioning his speed at the next level. It’s one thing to look good when you have a best NT and play most of your games against the worst BCS conference in the nation.

Whatever we do in the draft….

    Take the BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE.

Remember with the Pistons were unbeatable? They passed on Carmelo Anthony and drafted for “need” and took Darko Milicic in what would end up one of the WORST “draft for need” decisions in the history of sports.

I agree with most of what you’re saying, but I’d rather go for a guy that has a chance to be an A+ LT over a B+ DE.

I’d say Moore becoming a Umenyiora or Tuck type of player is reasonable albeit max potential of Moore. I don’t think he has quite the elite physical skills of a guy like JPP, but I would also say that Moore is less of a boom or bust pick than JPP was. I think with Moore you’re getting a B- to B+ player because he has good athleticism and seems to play hard and with heart.

2012 ALL-SEC FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL – Damontre Moore, Texas A&M, has been selected First Team All-Southeastern Conference (Coaches selection) for the 2012 college football season. Moore (Rowlett, Texas) emerged as the country’s breakout defender in his third season in Aggieland. His 12.5 quarterback sacks on the season tie for No. 2 in the nation and he ties for third in tackles for loss with 20. The junior paces the team with 80 tackles and could become just the third defensive lineman in the past 40 seasons to lead A&M in tackles. Moore currently leads the Aggies in tackles, solo tackles, sacks, tackles for loss, QB hurries and blocked kicks.

    Exactly.

As for the whole DE vs T debate. Which position do you think is easier to fill in free agency? And which has the better prospect in the draft?

I’d say Moore is better than any T prospect in the draft. And I’d say we should be able to fill the T position in free agency much easier than finding a impact DE. And for a way cheaper price.

    ——–

T’eo is a classic “draft for need” pick.

We need a MLB that has tons of leadership, he fits that bill. But he’s far from a top 3 pick. He isnt the BPA til about the 10-15 range. Anything earlier and you are reaching for “need”.

If we trade down to a position where he is the BPA, I could live with that due to how shallow this draft seems to be. But I wouldnt push for it either.

  47. Raider Riff Says:

I dont know if this is do-able, but here is what I have been proposing…

    Personel Moves:

    - WR core to look like this (FA, Moore, Ford, Streater, Criner, Hagan)
    - Stewart & Goodson as our RB’s
    - Move Wiz 2.0 back to LG
    - Move Bergstrom to RG (his natural position)
    - Move Houston in to DT

    Salary Saving Moves:

    - CP3 restructures and gives Reggie some flexibility (or trade for a very good pick)
    - Trade DMC for multiple picks (2nd and 4th)
    - Trade McClain for anything (Tebow? Seriously, a bum who cant play for a leader who cant play, its a major upgrade)
    - Restructure or trade DHB for a can of tuna
    - Cut Briesel
    - Cut Seymore & Kelly
    - Let Lechler go

    Fill Holes in the DRAFT:

    - We currently have 6 picks, and up to 8 more through possible trading down, and dumping of players like DMC etc, and compensatory picks for Bush or Campbell
    - Draft Mooren at DE
    - If Honey Badger is available late in the draft, we take him to make our #3 CB or possibly give us the flexibility to move Huff back to FS if absolutely needed.

    FREE AGENCY:

    - Get our #1 WR (Bowe?)
    - Bring back Nnamdi to be our #1 CB and pair him with HoneyBadger & Adams
    - JPP at DE
    - If there is money leftover, spend in on a impact RT or C… Jake Long will be available

Black shoots unarmed white hispanic; police refuse to arrest black

Taco Bell Shooting Victim was Holding Leash, Not Weapon, myfoxphoenix.com.

LAVEEN – Police are saying more about a shooting at a Taco Bell Tuesday night in which one man died.

They’re also identifying the victim as 29-year-old Daniel Adkins.

About 7:30 p.m., a 22-year-old man and his girlfriend ordered food at the Taco Bell drive-thru and were told to pull up while their order was prepared.

At the same time, Adkins stepped around a corner into the path of the vehicle and angry words were exchanged between he and the driver.

They got into an altercation and Adkins was shot once by the driver. He died at the scene.

The driver, a 22-year-old black male, called police but has not been arrested.

At first, the couple claimed that Adkins had a metal pipe that he swung at them — but it turns out he was holding a dog leash with his yellow lab on the other end.

Family members want that driver arrested, but he’s claiming self-defense.

“He needs to be behind bars. I’ll never see my brother again,” says sister Marina Reyes. “If he felt that my brother was threatening him, he could have easily just rolled up the window and called the cops.”

A metal pipe or bat was never located. An independent witness did say Adkins swung his fists in the driver’s direction.

“He swung his fist towards the driver window, and at some point the driver shot him,” says Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson. “Just because we don’t book a person immediately does not mean we don’t charge a person at a later date.”

The dog, Lady, stayed by Adkins’ side until the Humane Society came. Adkins lived with his mom and dad. He’s 29, but his family says he’s mentally disabled and has the mental capacity of a 12-year-old. He didn’t drive, and walked wherever he went.

“This person is still on the loose and I don’t agree with that. So he’s saying self defense, then where’s the weapon? Where’s the pipe? They didn’t find anything on my brother,” says Reyes. “He was just too aggressive, you don’t need to go that far.”

The shooter’s name has not been released. The investigation is still ongoing.

  74. John David Booty Says:

I see calls to draft Teo, Star, and Moore. Personally, Im for Star, as I think hed definitely make the most impact from day one, and have the ability to be the most productive of the 3 over a span of 10 years or so. Teo is a good player. Good instincts, good tackler, good enough athleticism, but not great. He will be a pretty good player for whoever hes drafted by, but his success may live or die on the system around him and whether the team that picks him has a stout enough D-Line. Would that be us? I cant really say I believe that. I also think that we have seen the BEST of Teo, at this point. I dont know how high his ceiling really is, but I do think he will be a good player. Worthy of a top 5 pick? Not unless your an already disciplined defense thats looking to replace an aging MLB. Thats not us.

Moore is beast, no other words for it. Hes gonna be able to beat O-linemen at the NFL level, no problem. Hes also good against the run. If we were to draft him, hed be able to apply pressure from day one. But our defense doesnt allow for the DEs to move around much. It would actually sadden me to see Moore get wasted by DA and Tarver. Moore is going to be another player whose success can live or die based on where he goes and how hes used.

Star is going to be a monster in the middle of the line, no matter what team drafts him. A smart D-coach will see that he can be used like Haloti Ngata, and moved from the middle, to DE on plays. But even if youre team is cursed with inept, uncreative coaches, like DA, Star is still going to be able to hold his assignment in the middle. Of all 3 players, I think Star makes the most impact from day one, and for the longest amount of time.

If our draft came down to drafting a MLB, DT, or DE/MLB, which would be able to make this defense better on opening day 2013?

Philly is a mess. Nnamdi hasnt adapted well to what theyve been asking him to do. At the same time, hes still one of the best players in one on one coverage in the league, and Philly just isnt taking advantage of that enough. I agree and disagree.

    Overpaid? Yes. Over rated? No.

True about teams being able to run all over us. Its been the Achilles for years. But recall that when our starting CBs were Nnamdi and Routt, we had one of the top defensive passing rankings in the league. And the last season when no one threw at Nnamdi, Routt was neck and neck with Revis in completion percentage.

The overlooked truth is that Routt and Nnamdi were both great at what Als defense wanted them to do; tight man coverage, from the line. Now we have DBs that have to play 10 yards off the WRs to avoid not getting burned. Then they get chewed up underneath. Id take Nnamdi and Routt back in a heartbeat.

I agree with you on Kelly to a degree. But I think Seymour is done. His best years are far behind him. I think Kelly could shine at UT next to Star, but if hes let go, which I expect, I still think Bryant and Star is going to be a mean DT duo. Even in 3-4, with Star as NT and Bryant as an end. So we have players that can make a nice line, and Star would be a great anchor. I dont think we are getting the most out of our line, like last year either. Wauffle had Houston, Bryant, Shaugnessy, Seymour, Kelly, all shifting and moving around. We were getting much more pressure. This D gets no pressure, even when sending the whole house. OK, Im getting off topic, rambling about the coaching.

    ———–

Trust me, I liked Wauffle as a d-line coach.

And yeah, Seymore is done physically.

But that doesnt change the fact that when he’s in the game and healthy, he plays well, and our run D still sucks. Why? Read my earlier post. Our LB’s miss the gaps and our DEs do a poor job of sealing the edge.

A new DT wont solve those issues. As great as Warren Sapp was, probably the best DT ever or at least in the conversation, he had GREAT DE’s and super smart LB’s behind him during his best years.

Which begs me to ask, why the hell did the NFL ever blackball Simeon Rice?

i would love star..mcshay was breaking him down the other day..suh type athleticism without the head trauma..

I dunno. We currently have two DT’s that when healthy, were playing VERY good football despite what the semi’s here think. I only want to dump Seymore and Kelly because of their costs, not their play.

I want another Grady Jackson. Much cheaper, and damn good.

But drafting a top notch DT, to replace two top notch DT’s isnt going to solve anything if our DE play is still so poor.

to me, kelly and seynour part of the root of the problem here in oakland..we havnt been able to stop the run or get a push up the middle for years. mcclain, seymour, kelley , and huff have gotz ta go imo.

If you think Kelly and Seymore are the reasons for our run woes, youre not properly evaluating the games.

They occupy lineman, and regularly change the line of scrimmage. It’s up to the DE’s to seal the edge (which ours dont) and our LB’s to fill the proper gaps that the DT’s create (which they dont).

A new DT wont change anything in those regards.
    ——————————-
if the new dt’s better, absolutely would change.

    ———–

A new DT would be cheaper, but he wouldnt play much better than Kelly and Seymore have this year.

A new DT wont solve our real issues. We need better DE’s and smarter LBs.

i would say most dt’s would play better than them..i think this way because i believe you have to control the middle of the field 1st and foremost on both sides of the line. mclame in this convo too.
