Grading the Raiders off victory over Chiefs

Beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders off their 15-0 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at the Coliseum. Here are McDonald’s grades and comments:

Pass offense

Carson Palmer played a complementary role, for once, letting the running game and the defense control the game. Palmer was 18 of 29 for 182 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. He was fortunate on at least two passes, forced into coverage, were not intercepted.
Grade: C-plus

Run offense

A season-high 203 yards on 45 carries, 38 of which went for positive yardage (including a late kneel-down). Darren McFadden had 110 yards on 30 carries, Mike Goodson 89 on 12 attempts and the Raiders had 10 rushing first downs while amassing a 40:06 to 19:54 advantage in time of possession.
Grade: A

Pass defense

Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn struggled (five passing first downs), but he also faced third-and-long virtually the entire game. The Raiders kept Chiefs receivers covered for the most part, and Quinn missed the ones that were open. Joselio Hanson had his second interception of the season, and the Raiders had a season high four sacks from Philip Wheeler, Desmond Bryant, Andre Carter and Tommy Kelly.
Grade: A

Run defense

The No. 5 rushing offense in the league was held to 10 yards on 10 carries. Feature back Jamal Charles had the 10 yards, on nine attempts. Kansas City had to abandon the run as the score mounted. In two games against the Raiders, Charles had 14 yards on 14 carries.
Grade: A

Special teams
Sebastian Janikowski accounted for all the scoring with field goals of 20, 50, 57, 30 and 41 yards. He missed once from 51 yards — his third miss of the season. The only kickoff the Raiders received was a touchback. Shane Lechler punted four times for a 51.3-yard gross average and a 40.3 net. Denarius Moore looked lost on punt returns, giving way to Matt Giordano late.
Grade: B

Coaching

The Raiders clearly were ready to play, and they were by far the more crisp and efficient team on both sides of the ball. The mixed coverages and occasional blitzes flummoxed Quinn, who for reasons unknown wasn’t given the hook. No problem with the conservative offensive calls and reliance on field goals. It was the right way to play the game for a team desperate to win.

Why would Pryor only get 1 chance to pass the ball? How is that in any way evaluating him or his future prospects?!?!
    ==========================================

Actually they had Pryor set up that as long as he got first downs, he was going to stay in the game. He got no first downs, so he didn’t stay in the game. Don’t blame Allen, blame Pryor.

Dennis allen didnt let pryor plAy yesterday because he doesnt want terrel pryor to play. He went wayyy out of his way to inform the cbs staff that carson was his qb of the future that says it all. He has a bias against terrel, he doesnt want terrel to succeed because then he’d have a controversy on his hands and he’ll have to do what hes to stubborn to do and thats adjust his system. Kind of messed up to know no matter how hard you work, or how much you improve youll never be given a fair shake. Smh Im not surprised some guys dont want to play for this pr!©k.

As 90% of fans and 100% of the team and coaching staff would say, Palmer is not the problem and has been exemplary. He has earned the right to lead the football team. Pryor has to EARN the right to lead the team, not just be handed it. Jamarcus Russell was handed the team by Al Davis. Look what happened. One thing I can tell you about this staff is you have to EARN your right to be on the field. Pryor had his chance, he didn’t get it done. If he had gotten a lst down, he would have continued. If he got a TD, he would have gotten another series. Don’t cry to me. I want to win games.

  • Dakota

I think Pryor will fall on his face if given the chance, but I wanted him to play yesterday just so we could stop the continuing Pryor debate in here…..

….however, maybe the fact that DA refuses to play Pryor means that he KNOWS his job is not secure, and is desperately trying everything he can to keep his job. Which would fly in the face of what has been speculated in here and by the writers that DA’s job is secure for next year.

If his job really was secure, then there was absolutely no reason whatsoever to not let Pryor start and play the entire game, or at least a substantial part of it yesterday.

Maybe there is still hope Reggie will do the right thing and fire this unfit coaching staff at year’s end?

I have to have something to hope for, because of that doesn’t happen, then the 2013 season is already over for us too.

Funny how when the team is losing, it’s Palmer’s fault. According to some here, a QB is only as good as W-L. Now the team goes out and plays a great defensive game, has the running game working, and Palmer has one of his more pedestrian games passing.

By the standards above, the Raiders won, so Palmer played great. Why doesn’t he get all the credit here?

Or maybe his credit gets diluted by the fact that Pryor got 3 (or 4 by his count) snaps and therefore is given part of the credit for the victory.

If you do not do everything to win the team will quit on you and stop progressing. That is both offense and defense. This is my opinion on our most recent coaches, most of you wont read this and the one’s that do will probably disagree but idgaf.

Dennis Allen- He is a guy who I believe is highly intelligent when it comes to x’s and o’s, probably one of the smarter guys in the league. That being said, the dude can’t teach and he doesn’t inspire. Guys won’t play for him and I think most don’t even like him. You can hear the frustration when u listen Taiwan and Pryor talk, this coach is disenfranchising the young guys. How can someone like Pryor ever trust a coach like Allen if he were to advise him to change positions? I think DA is in over his head and doesn’t have what it takes to be a HC yet. He is the NFL version of Mike Brown, except nowhere near as well liked by the media or hos own players. On a whiteboard he will dazzle you with his knowledge of the game, but he will leave u scratching ur head when he is actually on the job. He hasn’t even been a successful coordinator in this league and we except him to be our saving grace as a head coach?

Tom Cable- I really liked the Cable Guy/John Goodman. I think he is that Joe sixpack, blue collar, lunch pale type of guy and most people will get along with him easily. I think he is an excellent teacher and a great motivator. In my opinion he is lacking in his knowledge of the x’s and o’s and I don’t envision him out game-planning or out coaching many HCs in this league. I think he is a hard worker and he inspires others to work hard. He strikes me as a guy that is a better soldier than General, the right hand man of the head guy. I think a position coach/asst head coach is the perfect role for him. Allows him to teach without having to occupy too much of his time game-planning.

Hue Jackson- I think he is a very good playecaller, good
x’s and o’s guy and a pretty good motivator. Has been an excellent teacher at every stop and is a guy most players like and respect. Has the charisma that it takes to be good with the press and the offense that appeals to fans; he’ll put butts in the seats. His personality made every press conference entertaing and combined with his exciting offense, gave us the most sellouts and positive media coverage since the Callahan year. Biggest problem is that he doesn’t know how to delegate responsibilty to others. We spent all year with no true OC, QB coach, and through no fault of his own, with him as our de-facto GM. I think the Romac incident dealt a great blow to him as well. With the playoffs within reach, he chose to play him in an attempt to win rather sit him and send a message. That hurt his credibility with some in the media, some fans, and im sure some players. Is still our best coach since Gruden and reminds me of Jimmy Johnson. He went 1-4 down the stretch which coincides with the time DMC missed and the games Carson Palmer started. Offense played well enough to win a few of those games. I think he deserved a chance to bring in his own DC and get a whole year. Will be a HC in college or the NFL in the near future

You should know better! they almost beat Atlanta in Atlanta this year. In the NFL on any given Sunday there can be an upset because all the guys are fast and have skills. I mean Art Shell’s team in 06 beat Pittsburg! I want Knapp fired but do not think we need to tank the season to do so. Note the defense stopped a top rushing offense this week. KC is bad but they are not a bad running team and actually beat Carolina a couple of weeks ago and beat NO in NO.

That is because he is trying to come from behind. Typically losing QBs throw for a lot of yards at times if the defense is stinking it up. That tells me CP is doing a lot to help but he can not do it alone. Now having said this he sometimes gives games away with bad passes as well.
