The trick for Raiders is doing it again

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, December 17th, 2012 at 3:08 pm in Oakland Raiders.

With the grand vision of a team that relies on a strong running game and a stout defense finally coming into focus, Raiders coach Dennis Allen contemplated the next step Monday.

Doing it again.

A 15-0 win in their final home game against the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday was nice, but a similar effort on the road against Carolina would be an important next step.

“It’s just like I’ve been saying since Day 1 _ we’ve got to be more consistent at it,’’ Allen said at his weekly press briefing. “We’ve proven we can do it at times, but we’ve got to be more consistent at it. That will be our challenge moving forward.’’

At 4-10, the Raiders finish the season at Carolina and San Diego, both currently 5-9. Not in the NFL’s upper echelon, but not the 2-12 Chiefs, either.

With the Raiders defense taking a beating this season, Allen was protective of the perception that the result wasn’t as impressive given the level of competition.

“It’s tough to shut out anybody in this league,’’ Allen said. “For us to go out there and do that _ it’s the first time it’s been done in this organization for 10 years _ I think that was critical for our defense.’’

The shutout was the first since the Raiders blanked the Chiefs 24-0 in a rainstorm to close out the 2002 season with an 11-5 record. Allen also noted the 119 yards of total offense surrendered was the least given up by the Raiders since 1975, and pointed out that they gave up 10 yards on the ground to a team that came in ranked fifth in the league in rushing.

“I think that was a good confidence-builder,’’ Allen said. “Now we have to build on that.’’

– The Raiders gave the players the day off Monday, with the team beginning preparations for Carolina on Wednesday.

– Defensive end Andre Carter had his second sack and played 32 of 44 snaps, his highest percentage of the season. He was credited with five quarterback hits by the coaching staff.
Carter joined the Raiders Sept. 26 as a free agent after a Pro Bowl season with the Patriots last season that ended with a torn quadriceps that required surgery.

“He’s a lot closer (to top form) than he was, and he’s only going to get better,’’ Allen said. “He’s been a great addition for us, not only on the field, but in the locker room, in the classroom. He’s been good to have and I expect him to continue to get better.’’

– With Denarius Moore struggling to field punts against the Chiefs and Phillip Adams undergoing the NFL concussion protocol for the second time in three weeks, it’s not known who will return punts against the Panthers.

Allen said Moore had trouble finding the ball against the left-footed Dustin Colquitt, who averaged 54.7 yards per punt with a 51.7 net.

“Hopefully he’ll learn from it and we’ll move on,’’ Allen said.

He said other options were safety Matt Giordano and cornerback and special teams player Coye Francies.

– Wide receiver Juron Criner will be evaluated Wednesday after playing eight snaps against Kansas City before injuring his hip. Same goes for safety Mike Mitchell (neck) and defensive tackle Richard Seymour (hamstring), who looked on pace to play against Kansas City before a Friday setback.

Why did Reggie Mc hire a rookie HC with limited experience to such a long and costly contract. Another clue Reggie Mc isn’t a very wise man.

DA was given a contract generally provided to proven coaches with track records of success. Not a rookie coming out of his first season a a coordinator of a 20th ranked defense.

    Priest,

Yeah, you can’t go entirely cheapo.

Reggie knows he’s gonna need to spend big bucks on the right players from his time in GB

Reggie White was needed to get GB to the SB ..and win and he didn’t come cheaply; either did Woodson and they payed Favre plenty as well.

That would be Conner Barwin, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and Darnell Dockett.

Forget what happened in Denver if you see and know that Pryor is the real deal it is incumbent upon you to do the right thing. Not bury him so no one knows about it. At Reggie’s presser the other day, he said that da is ini charge of hiring his own staff and that they would sit down after the season to evaluate how they did. He also said, as I recall, that ultimately, the staff make up is up to him. To me, that means someone is gettin the axe if da likes it or not.

If DA is in charge of hiring his own staff, then he can be in charge of firing his own staff. So can Reggie.

Was he talkin bout the OC not bein able to score a TD? Or just gettin in FG range good enough. What the hey, we got a guy that can punch 7, 8, 9 field goals in a game from the 50-60 yard range. Who needs the red zone. Just mid field baby!

Yo Dawgs, I’m good with Allen comin back. A meaner, more unkindly and unfriendly coach with a chip on his shoulder. A bone to pick. Allen ain’t gonna be anyones toadstool next year. No sir. Maybe some silver and black gonna sink into him in the off season. Him and Reggie have some 1 on 1 heart to heart, mano y mano type talks. Norv as the OC, Saunders as the OC, Allen will gett’er done.

  • Super Dawg

Got a strong feeling Reggie is gonna draft offense, like WRs’ first, running backs and tight ends. Then he’s goin balls out in the FA market for upper tier defense, like pass rushers and DEs’. Then he’s got King in the wings. Everyone thinks Reggie is goin defense. Not me. We need to put up points. Points win games. But he will be bullish in the FA market for defense personel. Yup. Gonna fool everyone. Easy to get offensive guys via the draft. Give some defensive guys a second chance in Oaktown. Just like the good old days.

…especially if Allen insists on Knapp as our OC.

    ***

    Gdog,

that was a stupid comment. Reggie isn’t running the offense. It’s Knapp’s offense and it relies primarily on having a running game. DMAC is hurt all the time and he’s entering a “contract year”. If he gets traded, that is why – has nothing to do with what offense we run or BigMac’s history in Green Bay

the zbs is known for making average backs look great & great backs look average. Knapp is the most run oriented OC of the past decade. I’m pretty sure he’s gonna want some RB’s that can produce and stay healthy. the ground game will start clicking once the O-Liners either #1 figure out what they’re doing or #2 get replaced

  • RaiderRockstar

    =================================================
I’m pretty sure DMAC is under contract through 2013.

    I wouldn’t trade him anyway – unless it’s for a 1st or high 2nd.

IMO, DMAC is still our best offensive weapon.

If utilized correctly, he’s still a premier RB.

Durability is the only problem I have with DMAC. Too many injuries like turf toe and Lisfranc, but nothing like a career threatening knee injury. Willing to roll the dice that he can stay relatively healthy. If he can, he’s a baller.

Admittedly, not a good year for DMAC (most troubling to me has been some surprising drops) – but I blame the overall down year and futility on the Krapp factor more than anything else.

Most will disagree, but in my book DMAC is still our best player on offense. If he isn’t, I’d like to know who is.

So what are you going to do ? Trade him for a 3rd or 4th to draft another Bergstrom or Crawford ?

    Keep DMAC.
    Scrap Krapp.

    true!
    *****
Solomon Wilcots was incorrect about that information. Dmacs rookie deal was 6 years 60 million. He is signed through 2014

Here is the real question, if DMac no longer has value to us due to injury concerns, inability to be effective in multiple schemes, high salary cap # and lack of production vs quality defenses, then why would any other team want to give up a high draft pick for him. Truth is, McFadden would never bring in a pick that would be more valuable than he is to the org. We just need to draft us a durable ‘bell cow’ back and us Dmac as a change of pace weapon, OR be satisfied with trading him for a 4th round (at best) pick

  • Just Fire Baby

The Chiefs have been about the only team run more poorly than us.
