Janikowski honored for five-FG effort

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, December 19th, 2012 at 10:28 am in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his five field-goal effort against the Kansas City Chiefs.
This is the seventh time in Janikowski’s long career that he has earned the honor. The last time came in Sept. of 2011.
Janikowski accounted for all the scoring in the Raiders 15-0 victory over the Chiefs on Sunday. His lone miss came from 51 yards.
He converted field goals of 20, 30, 41, 50 and 57 yards against the Chiefs. In the process, he passed Morten Anderson for the third-most field goals from 50 yards or longer. He now has 42, tied with John Kasay for the second-most ever. Janikowski trails only the Lions’ Jason Hanson (52) for most such field goals.
Overall, Janikowski has made 29 of 32 field-goal attempts this season. He is battling the Browns’ Phil Dawson for the spot on the AFC team in the Pro Bowl.
Dawson has made 26 of 27 field-goal attempts this season, with a long of 52.

Haven’t been in here for a few days. So is the board all excited because we actually won a game? Lol. That was one of the most unimpressive shutouts I’ve ever seen. And keep in mind that KC went for it on 4th down and failed twice in FG range. Could just as easily have been 15-6.

  2. The Big Banana Says:

And why again did we not just roll with Pryor? This game meant nothing and was a perfect opportunity to see what he could do on a real game. Smh at this staff.

Then again, Krapp may stump Pryor more than help so maybe it’s a good thing to keep him shelved until a competent staff is hired.

  3. The_Judge37 Says:

Jano owes this award to Greg Knapp, who’s offensive system allowed for so many long distance FG attempts.

  4. MiamiRaider78 Says:

    Proven-The system does work

Proven-Knapps playcalling has always been mierda.

Well guess what, we are about to get kicked in the nuts by the new football paradigm, and crushed by the wave of the future and it is a tsunami named Cam newton.
When cam shows off his other worldly skill allen will look like the biggest idiot on the planet. Worst than what he looks like now.

As far as engaging in hyperbole, you are possessed of other worldly, even ‘Spaced Age’ skills.

  6. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

wait before i go ill leave you with this article from the charlotte observer. This is what the wave of the future can do for you. By the way there are many articles on wilson kappy and rgIII in their local papers as well.

Wouldn’t be nice to have qb that had write ups like this in silver and black? i mean write ups that they actually deserved instead of the empty hyperbole we got with the dynamic duo article and the infamous trade validation article that im sure the writer wishes he never printed.

since Nov. 18, Newton has a passer rating of 109.8, second only to Washington’s Robert Griffin III. Newton has thrown 10 touchdown passes and no interceptions. He also has run for three touchdowns.

Much of the success in the passing game, offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski said, comes from Newton’s willingness to find secondary targets.

“He’s really improved” in his decision making, Chudzinski said. “I’ve talked about Cam improving and that’s one area: not taking sacks, getting rid of the ball, checking it down, getting it to a second read.

“You saw some dump-offs to DeAngelo (Williams) or Mike Tolbert (on Sunday at San Diego) or getting out of harm’s way and throwing the ball out of bounds.

“Those are the things quarterbacks do that can keep drives alive – minimize negative plays or not trying to force the ball and throw an interception. You’re stringing the plays together.”

An Observer review of every Newton pass during the past five games examined everything Chudzinski mentioned and more.

Newton entered the Nov. 18 game against Tampa Bay averaging 238 yards passing, with eight passing touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a 77.2 passer rating. The Panthers were 2-7.

During the recent five-game span, Newton averaged 261.1 yards passing with 10 passing touchdowns, zero interceptions and a 109.8 passer rating. And the Panthers were 3-2.

Newton has been very effective on passes within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage, going 62-of-89 with four scores.

Included in that total: Newton is 10-for-11 on screen passes, for 156 yards and two touchdowns. On dump-offs and check-downs to secondary receivers, Newton is 15-for-18 for 124 yards.

Newton’s 152 pass attempts without an interception is a franchise record, beating Jake Delhomme’s six-year-old mark. Newton’s is the longest active streak in the NFL.

He has been sacked just nine times over those five games, and hurried nearly 13 times per game.

Newton threw crucial interceptions Oct. 21 against the Cowboys and Oct. 28 against Bears when he was hit as he threw. But during this stretch, Newton has attempted 17 passes with seven completions for 138 yards and a touchdown when being hit.

Playing a large role in Newton’s lack of turnovers, Chudzinski said, are drills run by quarterbacks coach Mike Shula that simulate Newton’s check-downs and safety valve routes when under pressure. Newton must avoid backup quarterbacks Derek Anderson or Jimmy Clausen, acting as pass rushers, before finding his option.

Chudzinski said the drills, film study and in-game experience have allowed Newton to make those reads quicker.

“You have to see yourself on film making mistakes and you have to see situations where, ‘Oh if I would have just checked it down here,’ ” Chudzinski said. “And stressing with him over and over and over again, ‘Where’s my check-down, where’s my safety valve, where can I get the ball to if I need to get it out quickly?’ ”

Chudzinski said Newton still has a lot to improve upon, including his mechanics. During the past five games he either has overthrown, underthrown or been wide on 32 attempts, or 21 percent of the time.

With this hot streak, Newton needs to average 172.5 passing yards over the final two games to break Peyton Manning’s NFL record for most passing yards during a quarterback’s first two seasons (7,874).

“He’s playing more consistent and I think he’s getting more confidence,” Chudzinski said. “Those are things that just start building and everything feeds off that.

“As you see yourself doing things and you see mistakes, hopefully you’re correcting them the next time they come up. And I think that’s clicking. You’re seeing Cam improve in those areas.”

    I’ll say it again:

I think we’ll see a lot more of the younger players and back ups in the next two games. With the Chefs, if you’re playing the worst team in the league, and suspect they might rather lose for draft position, just how much would you learn about you’re back ups? They’re going to play hard no matter what ’cause they’re back ups. Might be a good time to see how hard your starters play in a “meaningless game” and if they’re football players or check cashers. Still two games to go to evaluate players, and San Diego won’t be tanking for draft position at home.

  9. The Big Banana Says:

Not buying it, Purvis. KC would have been a perfect game to play some of the young guys for that very reason. Ease them into it.

    ——-

It’s important because we’re looking at a top 5 pick and need a QB for the future. It’s not about upgrading pryor to starter or even 2nd string. It’s about knowing what you have in a future prospect just in case you might want to use the top 5 pick on a QB. Unless this team plans on drafting in the top 5 again, gotta know now what you have in Pryor

Less about the selfishness of Allen and more about the ignorance of fans. If they play their players and win, fans want to see the #3 Q. If they play the
#3 Q, fans would scream their heads off that they lost to a 2-12 team. Best for the org and the players to try to string some wins together at the end and eff what the fans think.

  23. The Big Banana Says:

Miami – it’s not about playing the 3rd stringer over the starter. That’s an oversimplification. Pryor was drafted to be the future QB, was he not? We need to know what we’ve got and start giving him game experience.

    ===============================================

But Carson Palmer was not here when Pryor was drafted. We do not know if Pryor can even BE a Q in this league. Palmer can. Certainly in the next two weeks again, we can see a series of plays for Pryor. But let’s be honest here, the future of this team is not pointing to Terrel Pryor.

  28. The_Judge37 Says:

Palmer is not our future. He’s a stop gap for 2-3 years at the most, 1-2 years at the least. Maybe they have one more yeart to see if Pryor can be the future QB, but a Top 5 pick is comming soon, and it might be a good idea to know if a QB is the way to go with it.

  29. shutdown Says:

“And why again did we not just roll with Pryor?”

For the same reason we don’t “just roll with DHB” as qb.

The guy isn’t a quarterback. He needs to do what Tebow needs to do, now, while he’s young–commit to changing positions or go to Canada if he wants to play football.

Yet misdick labels me ‘the most racist person on the blog’ because I made fun of Jamarcus penchent for speaking in the 3rd person… which he actually did… Fcking race baiting hypocrite.

  32. shutdown Says:

“Pryor was drafted to be the future QB, was he not?”

Well, it was Al who drafted him…so, hard to say. Al would either have told his head coach to “teach him how to be a qb” or “get him to change positions.”

Al thought size and speed were all that was necessary to become a football player because Warren Wells and Cliff Branch actually learned to catch balls as they sprinted toward the end zone. He fancied it was worth a chance.

I looked at that preseason game that TP played against Detroit, where he completed a couple of long passes. Both passes were only kind of near a covered receiver. As I recall, both were heaves that were a underthrown.

One pass was a nice one to a receiver crossing over the middle, with Pryor, on the run, leading him nicely.

Do I think that showed much? No, not really. All qbs can do that at times. Even David Humm.

  33. bcz24 Says:

Pryor was the last in a historical string of draft misses by a dying man.

  34. raiderzmaverick Says:

As bad as it is to say it, the reason is that our offensive coaching staff are like the Jet’s. They can’t think outside the box of “what they know”. So, trying to rework schemes to fit different types of players don’t get done. It’s why you don’t see the players being put into positions to take advantage of their skills.

It’s why you don’t see Reece used. It’s why they wouldn’t put Pryor in. Look at the Redskins this year – their QB gets hurt and they rework their offense to fit the back-up. They put in the type of plays for RG3.

Knapp wouldn’t have the creativity to do that. So the QB would look like crap no matter what.

  35. The_Judge37 Says:

I know Al loved drafting people and playing them at position he thought they’d be good at, but i do remember the Raiders saying Pryor would be a QB even before Al died.

This apparantly is way to logical for some in here. I’ve been saying the same thing weekly for damn near ever. Quite a while, anyway. Get to winning and CP3 might even stick around as #2, collect a check and rest up those battle worn bones. Would feel pretty good going into a game with him as back up, wouldn’t it? 3-4 years from now, I repeat.

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (WHDH) — A Newburyport postal worker was arrested and charged with possessing child pornography featuring children as young as 4-years-old.

Ronald Parker, 46, of Amesbury was arrested on Monday by state police who say they caught on to Parker surfing the Internet for child pornography and other crimes against children.

In Newburyport, residents are outraged that a child porn suspect worked as a substitute letter carrier in their town.

“He needs to be locked up. He can’t be around children, especially if he’s on a route. What if those children are home alone after school without their parents around, they’re playing or on their bike at the — where the mailbox is,” said Michelle Fugere

    ======================

    Yes FREE ROB PARKER!!!

Rob parker although i may disagree with airing out rgIII on public tv opened a very critical discussion.

Rob parker drew attention to the fact that entertainers and athletes show no commitment to improving the communities they are from or uplifting their own people.

This is why jordan tiger woods lebron james and so many others are complte failures in my mind where this is concerned. they dont want to risk losing thier trinkets for being a goood entertainer by biting the hand that feeds them.

parker deserves credit as im sure he knew this was a risky thing to do.

Entertainers will never speak on any real issue concerning race because they have made their living entertaining those that seek to destroy us. Bill cosby oprah winfry, eddie murphy and so on.

Abc is far more comfortable putting lil wayne on tv or nicki minaj, they are puppets and agents of destruction for thier own kind.

That is a crucial discussion that black people must have amongst one another, if we are going to continue to teach children to look up to and respect these entertainers.

It should be pointed out that no one makes an issue when a players so called patriotism is called into question (see rahshad mendenhall), yet the minute a black man raises a real issue for our community he is silenced by the network.

proof that only non threatening personalities that want to see our people remain in their current state are the only acceptable black people in the media.

Any dialogue that may cause us to rethink our position and possibly elevate ourselves in the process is banned.

espn told rob parker shut up and entertain us

They have set an example or continued the trends which says in amerikkka any black man that puts his community first will be silenced imprisoned or killed.

BCZ i dont expect you to agree and dont care if you do or dont. this is an in house black mans issue and your opinion on the topic is unwanted, unneeded, and unwelcome.

I WASNT TALKNING ABOUT YOUR UNCLE RON

    =================

Rob Parker was suspended by ESPN because he was the dumbest least entertaining black guy on tv. Everything he spewed from his mouth was utter nonsense. I can see why you look up to him though.

    ^^^^^^^^^
You mean that guy was worse than Steven A Smith??

    Get outta here! lol

If DA stays then McK better tell him to hire Norv as his OC and then hire ED Donatell as his DC.

DA needs to also hire a new Special Teams coach!

If no changes are made with teh coordinators and if DA stays, then this team will be terrible again next year.

    Write it down!

Haven’t been in here for a few days. So is the board all excited because we actually won a game? Lol. That was one of the most unimpressive shutouts I’ve ever seen. And keep in mind that KC went for it on 4th down and failed twice in FG range. Could just as easily have been 15-6.

    Hey Big Banana.

Keep in mind that one of the times they were deep in our territory was because of a DMAC fumble that KC was able to do nothing with, so we can’t put that one on the D.

They did have ONE drive that got ‘em into range though so maybe we’re looking at 15-3?

Fire this guy, fire that guy. I can’t think of one of you screaming brats that know anything about football.
    Give it a rest.

missdick is the biggest moron this blog has ever seen.

and his support of rob parker is sickening, just like his whole life.

rob parker is the kind of black guy who wants very badly for black people to stay segregated, and line up against whites. he can’t think past race, but accuses everyone else of it.

    just like the supa-tool missdick.

and missdick is the type of guy who makes otherwise non-racist people almost root against blacks, so they can laugh at him.

i have to say, if i could, i would punch him in the face repeatedly.

  63. dr_robert Says:

rob parker and his “babershop crowd” are nearly identical to people like fangs and his “trailer crowd”. ignorant racists who can only see skin color. trying to hold others back be refusing to let them just be people.

i like newton, griffin, wilson, freeman, pryor. they’re fun to watch and i’m rooting for them. i think it’s cool that more black qb’s are shining.

but missdick is such a dick that i almost want them to fail so i can rub it in his face.

And why again did we not just roll with Pryor? This game meant nothing and was a perfect opportunity to see what he could do on a real game. Smh at this staff.

pure selfishness on the part of allen

pulling a tom cable and hoping to pad his pathetic win total instead of evaluating young tp6 and giving him valuable development time in game.

    this is treasonous
    ==================================
Since when has it been treasonous to win a football game? Since when has it been treasonous to beat the hated Chiefs? I am not exactly a happy bunny with this season’s showing but come on man and get some perspective. We play to win. Nothing else to say.
    Go Raiders!

Knapp is tied to the hip of Palmer that”s why! Palmer is a Finished Product! Reggie is No Fool and can see that Knapp is not gonna coach anyone up! He needs vets and they have to be good to carry him! He insults our inteligence when he calls Sweep after Sweep on 4th or 3rd and 1. It’s just not what you expect from an experienced Coach!
