Seymour, Branch not at practice once again

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, December 20th, 2012 at 11:56 am in Oakland Raiders.

Defensive tackle Richard Seymour and strong safety Tyvon Branch aren’t at practice today for the second straight day. All in all, the Raiders still are relatively healthy for a team about to play its 15th regular-season game.
It’s doubtful that Seymour will play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, given he has missed the past six games and his injured hamstring isn’t healed enough for him to practice.
Branch’s situation is another matter. He played last Sunday despite missing most of practice leading up to the Kansas City Chiefs game.
It’s likely that things will play out the same this Sunday, with Seymour inactive and Branch playing at less than 100 percent.

– As for playing time Sunday, coach Dennis Allen said he doesn’t expect any lineup changes or the playing time to be much different than it was for the Chiefs game.
“No, it’s going to be pretty similar to what we did last week,” Allen said. “Still getting an opportunity to look at a few guys.”
That doesn’t bode well for quarterbacks Matt Leinart and Terrelle Pryor, running back Taiwan Jones and backup tight ends Richard Gordon and David Ausberry, guys that played sparingly against the Chiefs.
Pryor got on the field for four plays. Well, three plays if you don’t count the false-start penalty to begin his one drive. Pryor handed off twice and then missed wide on a pass for wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey on third down.

– The Raiders get one final shot at winning a game played in the Eastern Standard Time zone this Sunday, when they travel to Charlotte, N.C.
So far, they are 0-4 this season in such games, with losses at Miami, Atlanta, Baltimore and Cincinnati. In 2011, they went 0-2, with losses in Buffalo and Miami. In 2010, they lost both times on the east coast, against Pittsburgh and Miami.
The streak stands at nine straight losses, dating to Dec. 6, 2009, when the Raiders beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh behind a stellar game from quarterback Bruce Gradkowski and wide receiver Louis Murphy.
Since Dec. 15, 2002, the Raiders are 5-26 in games played back east.

would u take junior seau in the first round? mike singletary? cuz teo is basically a mix of those two.

    =================

Go look at what Singletary had surrounding him and Seau was one of the most overrated players I’ve ever seen…I just saw 2 more mock drafts that had him out of the top 15.

And why is he a mixture of those 2? Cuz he plays against the Big 10 schedule? That’s a gawd awful conference.

And furthermore, this is top 5 we are talking about, not the 1st round.
    ******************

notre dame isn’t it in the big ten. best player on the best team in the country. best player on the best defense in the country. he leads them in tackles AND has 7 int’s. very smart, very tuff, and a great leader.

    and u wouldn’t like a hall-of-fame MLB in the top 5?

    ^^^^^^^^
Crazy how people don’t see Te’o as a special talent.

    Bunch of weirdos.

Get ready for the fake mock drafts and false rumors that will try and say Te’o is “too slow” to try and drop his stock so he falls to a good team in the late middle to late 1st round and he dominates! haha

Manti Te’o will be a first-round pick, but some question his speed
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 8, 2012, 12:53 PM EST

Notre Dame middle linebacker Manti Te’o has had a brilliant senior season and is a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, and he’s widely viewed as a first-round pick in April’s NFL draft. But he’s not necessarily viewed as a sure thing in the NFL.

Albert Breer of NFL Network talked to several personnel people about Te’o, and although scouts like him, they don’t necessarily love him because some question whether he has the speed to be as impressive a player in pass coverage in the NFL as he has been this year at Notre Dame, when he had seven interceptions.

“Speed will be a factor with Manti, because you’re gonna be in a position to cover backs and tight ends at that spot, and not just on third down,” one AFC executive told Breer. “Teams throw on first and second down, so you have to be able to run and cover. You don’t want liabilities in coverage in your base. I don’t think he’s a liability. Does he run well enough? He’s not speed-deficient, but with his play speed, in covereage, there are some specific guys you’d have questions about. Guys like Jimmy Graham, Darren Sproles, or the [Chris] Cooley or [Dallas] Clark types, those guys get separation. You might be worried about him there.”

Knocking a linebacker because he’s not as quick as Darren Sproles strikes me as similar to knocking a cornerback because he’s not as big as Calvin Johnson, but the larger point is fair: NFL teams may be able to create some matchup advantages on pass plays by throwing over the middle and making the 6-foot-2, 255-pound Te’o drop into coverage.

Te’o has had a lot of eyes on him while playing for the No. 1 team in the country this year. He’ll also have a lot of eyes on him at the Scouting Combine, when it’s his turn to run the 40.

    ^^^^^^^^^
I find this BS. Who are these scouts?

My guess is that they are scouts from the good teams in the league who will be picking outide of the top 18, trying to throw up smoke screens about Te’o’s alleged lack of speed before the combine or workouts??

They just trying to drop his draft stock so he falls to the good teams in the 1st round.

Te’o will run a 4.70 at 6′2, 250 pounds and run a solid shuttle. He will be just fine, for you HWS measurable types.

It’s all about getting legit FOOTBALL players on this Raider team….for once!

    ^^^^^^^^^
I still get a kick on how these alleged “scouts” are asking how Te’o can cover the Grahams, Sproles or the NFL?

OLB’s will be asked to try and do that MOST OF THE TIME…..not MIKES/ILB’S.

    Give me a break.

How about Reggie McKenzie go and look at Te’o’s game tape, football intangibles, work ethic and character instead of basing their drafting on straight line 40 time?

    What a concept huh?

Straight line 40 times are overrated!

    =========

That’s fantastic, but he has to sit there on and see how it will project into the NFL. We’re not playing a weak schedule like ND gets every year.

There is no appreciable reason to play palmer in this game or the next. Nothing is on the line other than a chance to improve form 4 to 5 games in the win column.

In my estimation that is not enough reward to fail prudent business and time tested draft strategy of playing young qbs during a non competitive season.

thank goodness Cam newton is playing in this game. otherwise there would be no qbs on the field that would interest me in the slightest or cause me to watch.

That Michigan St team is 3-5 in conference play & finished 6-6. But like most typical Big 10 teams, they get over ranked.
Impressive win against Michigan. Needed 5 INT’s to win by a TD against a Denard robinson squad. How did Alabama fare against them?

    >>nix isn’t even the best player on their line. tuitt is.>>
So that’s another 1st round pick covering for Teo huh?

    >>u said u wouldn’t want seau or singletary in the first round.>>
No I didn’t. I said I don’t want Teo in the top 5. And I said Seau was overrated as hell & Singletary was surrounded by studs.

    >>he’s ranked #2 on kiper’s board and #7 on mcshay’s.>>
Oh well that settles it. Kiper had Mike Williams out of USC as his #1 overall in 2005. Now what was the knock against Williams? Oh right, that crazy speed thing. Should I list other Kiper failures as well?

Didn’t McShay tell us how great Andre Woodson & Jevon Snead were gonna be?

How about Reggie McKenzie go and look at Te’o’s game tape, football intangibles, work ethic and character instead of basing their drafting on straight line 40 time?

    What a concept huh?

Straight line 40 times are overrated!

    =========

That’s fantastic, but he has to sit there on and see how it will project into the NFL. We’re not playing a weak schedule like ND gets every year.

Intangibles, work ethic, & character huh? Yup those traits are serving Tim Tebow quite well aren’t they?…Hell I thought McClain had all those things.

    ^^^^^^^^
Why are you comparing Te’o to McLain though? When it is obvious Te’o is quicker, can cover, is a hard worker, has heart and can has proven he can play as a MIKE in a 4-3 as an ILB in a 3-4?

Questions on McClain were whether he was quick enough and whether he can cover and whether he can be a MIKE in a 4-3.

Te’o has shown on tape he can cover, play both as a MIKE and ILB and is quick and is a helluva tackler and leader. Complete opposite of McClame character wise as well?

What’s your issue? Worry he can’t run a straight line 40 in 4.6? Give me a break with that.

  119. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

NEW 2014 mock draft via walter football

1 Oakland Raiders: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 12/13): Star Lotulelei, NT

Sorry for the spoiler alert, but the first three picks in this 2014 NFL Mock Draft will actually be the same as those in Charlie’s 2014 NFL Mock Draft. We compile these independently, so it was quite the coincidence that we came up with the first three picks – though you could say they should be obvious at this point.

The Raiders are terrible for many reasons, one of which is their inability to put pressure on the quarterback. As of this writing, only the Jaguars have fewer sacks this season. And right nearby, Aldon Smith has more sacks than Oakland’s entire roster. That’s embarrassing.

Quarterbacks usually go No. 1 overall, but Jadeveon Clowney is a once-in-a-generation pass-rusher. He’s the favorite to be chosen first overall.

2 Jacksonville Jaguars: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 12/13): Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB

Anyone who thinks Johnny Manziel is too small to be chosen in the top five is completely mistaken. Manziel currently stands at 6-foot-1, 200. That’s taller than Drew Brees and Russell Wilson. Robert Griffin (6-2, 220) is pretty much the same size as Manziel will be following next season. Manziel also boasts a very good arm and great accuracy. There’s no reason why he can’t be a top-five selection if he continues to play as he did in his Heisman campaign.

You know a team’s quarterback situation is dire when Chad Henne represents some hope. Jacksonville isn’t going anywhere until it addresses this position.

3 New York Jets: Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
2013 NFL Mock Draft Pick (as of 12/13): Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB

The Jets have to keep Mark Sanchez on the roster next season because cutting him would result in a $17.1 million cap hit. Giving Sanchez such a contract is a fireable offense.

Fortunately, New York can get out of Sanchez’s nightmare deal following the 2013 campaign, and its fans can finally move on to a real quarterback. Maybe Fireman Ed will even return.

I constantly debate about the value of the O-line, but in the draft I am a value guy.

To me, Chance Womack, Te’O and Geno Smith are far and away the best prospects at their positions.

Ok folks new MOCK draft 2013 via walter football

1 Kansas City Chiefs: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
This pick largely depends on what happens with Scott Pioli. If he’s fired, as the awesome @saveourchiefs movement is pushing for, this selection will be used on a quarterback. There currently is no signal-caller worth taking No. 1 overall, but that could easily change. Remember two years ago when ESPN was mocking Da’Quan Bowers and Nick Fairley to the Panthers? Well, Cam Newton ballooned to the top, as will some other quarterback this year. If not, the Chiefs could always trade down.

If Pioli is retained, he’ll pick Luke Joeckel, Manti Te’o or Star Lotulelei and then go for Mike Glennon in the second round. I’ve heard from a reliable source that Pioli really likes Glennon. Mel Kiper, by the way, stated that Glennon could be the first signal-caller off the board, so maybe the Wolfpack product will be the quarterback who rises to the top of the draft. A lot will change over the next four months.

By the way, I’m doing this live because I thought it’d be fun to get instant feedback. I’m going to post my mock anyway, so why not do it this way? Follow @walterfootball for updates.

2Jacksonville Jaguars: Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB, Georgia
I’ve been mocking a quarterback to the Jaguars for the longest time because it’s been clear that Blaine Gabbert is a sunk cost. I argued that there was no way in hell Jacksonville could go into the 2013 season and sell its fans on Gabbert for another year.

However, two things have happened. First, Matt Barkley has completely fallen off and cannot be taken at No. 2 overall right now. And second, Chad Henne was brilliant in two starts prior to playing the three AFC East teams. Unless this downward spiral continues, what the Jaguars can sell the fans on is Henne as a bridge to a young quarterback they take in Round 2. Thus, they’ll be free to snag someone as talented as Jarvis Jones.

Jones would be a huge boost to a defense that has missed strongside linebacker Daryl Smith all year. Smith is a free agent, so if he’s not re-signed, Jones would be a worthy replacement. He would function as Von Miller does in Denver, rushing the quarterback in obvious passing situations.

3 Oakland Raiders: Star Lotulelei, NT, Utah
Is there any doubt the Raiders need help at defensive tackle in the wake of Doug Martin’s near-record performance?

Richard Seymour’s contract will be voided at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Tommy Kelly is a bum who doesn’t care about winning, as evidenced when he laughed after prolonging a San Diego drive with a pair of offside penalties. He’s played so sluggishly this year and was especially bad versus Tampa, so there’s no chance he’s going to see a penny of his $6.5 million salary in 2013. He’s as good as gone, and 15-year-old head coach Dennis Allen lost all respect in the locker room for not cutting him after the opener.

4 Philadelphia Eagles: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
Is there any doubt that the Eagles have to upgrade their offensive line? Their tackle position is in shambles. Jason Peters tore his Achilles; Demetress Bell has been a bust signing; while King Dunlap simply sucks. Even if Peters comes back close to 100 percent, an upgrade could be made at right tackle, which would allow Todd Herremans to move back to his natural guard position.

Luke Joeckel had a slow start to his 2012 campaign, but he’s improved tremendously, even stifling the LSU pass-rushers. He could easily go in the top four, right after a quarterback and some order of Jarvis Jones and Star Lotulelei.

For all the complaints about AD draft picks, you guys sure are worried about speed.

We just need a MLB to gobble up RB’s like Matt Millen used to do.

    ^^^^^^^^
    Exactly.

Some these clowns in here need to learn that HWS and straight line 40 times are overrated when drafting.

It’s about getting legit football players first and foremost.

Study game tape and see what intangibles, smarts, toughness, leadership and work ethic a player brings to the table instead of worrying about straight line 40 speed.

I also said johhyny football was one of my favorite qb to watch in college.

I am not sold on the arm strength, but that could be a result of the passing offense they run, with lots of horizontal stretch passing concepts.

In the few times I have watched i have not seen him fit the ball into small windows or push the ball deep outside of the numbers.

In fact i saw a few wobbly floaters, but being a freshman means he will indeed grow in terms of arm strength.

Arm strength is luxury not necessarily a deal breaker.

I like Star, but getting a two gap fat NT/DT type within the top 3 picks would be an ill advised move.

You pick a top QB, top pass rushing OLB/DE, stud LB, maaaaybe a stud LT (even though I think that philosophy is overrated) or an elite RB (like AP) or otherwordly freak WR (like Megatron)

Look at the DT’s/NT’s who haev been top 4 picks recently. No impact, except for Ngata and he was picked 9th overall I believe the year we picked Huff.

2005 Travis Johnson was taken by Houston at 16. Where is he?

2006 Ngata was actually taken 12th. He is a stud.
Brod Bunkley was taken at 14 and he is servicable….I guess.

2007 Amobe Okoye and Justin Harrell were taken within the top 16. They stink! Patrick Willis was taken 11th and by all rights could haev been taken 4 spots higher.

2008 The year we took DMC and soem fo you were screaminfor Glenn Dorsey and Sedrick Ellis who were taken within the top 10 after we took DMC. Both of those guys have had no impact!

2009 The year Al reached and took DHB. BJ Raji was taken two spots after. I think most of us agree we should have taken at least 6 players ahead of DHB in that draft. BJ is one of them….however, BJ started off good, but has faded the last two years. He is overweight and gets tired way to quickly to make an impact on play by play basis.

2010 I think we all would have loved to have Suh be a Raider. Gerald McCoy? Not so much….he has faded. Suh has made an impact, even though he is bipolar and is not a leader. We took RoMac and of course he will be with the team next year.

2011 Marcel Dareus has been a non factor on a bad Bills D. The Lions should haev stayed away from Nick Fairley….an underachiever.

So there you go fellas. Is Star as dominant as Suh??

    Hmm…..

I would still rather have Te’o ahead of Star without a doubt.

Te’o would be the new QB and leader of the defense. Stud LB, all heart with great work ethic and a good kid also, who would probably be a captain as well in his first year. Then look to add a fat NT type through FA or in the middle rounds of the draft.

No, it is much harder to find a pass rusher than a mlb and it would be cheaper and a better idea imo to find a mlb in FA. You dont get the opportunity to draft great pass rushers often must take the chance when you get it.
    ——-

We’ve found pass rusher’s in the past offseason’s like Burgess, Clemons and Wimbley.

Guys like Danny Clark are what stop gap MLB’s look like.

Plus we can find one trik pony Rushers like Trevor Scott late in the draft. Not long term solutions but we’re not going to fill all holes in this draft.

Yeah, but how many times after a big play on either offense or defense do you see players go run up and hug the coach? One thing that Allen said is he needs someone who can quarterback the defense. I thought that was an interesting statement because we have needed that for years around here. To take anything this cocaching staff does with Pryor as somehow a reflection on Pryor is a mistake it is in fact an indictment against this coaching staff. If they lose this kid to another team and he goes to say Arizona this staff and Reggie McK will suffer the consequences. QB’s are very hard to get because everybody wants one and for them to have this kid in their charge and not develope him will be essentially what Atl did when they traded Brett Farve before ever giving him a chance to compete.

Thiis wont be the only time a team had a great talent under their nose and didn’t realize it. It happens all the time. TB had Steve Young, our own Oakland Raiders drafted Roman Gabriel and gave him away. They’re going down that road once again. They just don’t recognize talent in their own camp.
