Seymour out for Sunday’s game, says he’s still ‘elite’ player
By Steve Corkran
Friday, December 21st, 2012 at 1:17 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Defensive tackle Richard Seymour won’t play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. It’s possible that he has played his final game of the 2012 season, but he still has a desire to play beyond this season.
Seymour said Friday that the high hamstring injury he suffered against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Nov. 4 has caused a lot of frustration and disappointment because he isn’t able to help on the field.
“I definitely wanted to gut it out,” Seymour said, “but it isn’t a situation where you can, you can’t gut a hamstring out. It isn’t like you can tape a shoulder up or tape an elbow, or one of those deals. A hamstring, it ain’t like you can say, OK. It’s totally different from that standpoint.
“But one of the most disappointing things for me is, being a team leader and not being out there with my teammates. That’s the most disappointing part because I bleed silver and black.”
Along those lines, Seymour was asked if he wants to re-sign with the Raiders after this season. He is an unrestricted free agent after this season and free to negotiate with any of the league’s 32 teams.
“In terms of my future, we’re still in the season and, I guess, when that time comes, we’ll cross that bridge then,” Seymour said. “Like I said, I bleed silver and black. From that standpoint, we’ll see what happens when that time comes. For now, I’ll continue to lead and support my teammates.”
Seymour is in his 12th NFL season. In his prime, he commanded double-teams and oftentimes dominated at the line of scrimmage, freeing up teammates in one-on-one situations and making those around him better.
Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie had the option of cutting Seymour this past offseason and sending him on his way with $7.5 million guaranteed. Instead, McKenzie and Seymour worked out a restructured contract that kept Seymour in the mix.
Now, McKenzie has tape of the eight games Seymour played, as well as that from Seymour’s first 11 seasons, to gauge whether it’s worth bringing back Seymour.
Seymour is convinced that he still has the ability to play at a high level.
“When healthy, I still play at an elite level,” Seymour said. “That’s one of the things that, the film speaks for itself.”
– Allen said Phillip Adams is healthy and ready to go for Sunday’s game. That means Adams will start at cornerback and also return punts.
Adams suffered his second concussion of the season last Sunday. Yet, he passed all the league-mandated tests for players that suffer concussions and has been cleared to play.
– The Raiders have 25 players that are potential free agents after this season. Seventeen of those are unrestricted free agents, meaning they can sign anywhere they please, short of the Raiders placing the franchise tag on one of them.
Allen said he and his coaching staff are paying close attention to how their players perform down the stretch, at a time when some players are prone to going through the motions, given the playoffs no longer are part of the equation.
“Oh, yeah, we’re looking at that,” Allen said. “That’s part of the evaluation process. I’ve already stated that, we’ve got to look at guys as we move forward to see what we’re going to do in the future and, obviously, we’ve got two more games to get an opportunity to look at them.”
Beyond that, Allen said, he expects the same kind of effort from his players every game, regardless the situation.
“My hope is that they’re playing football because they love playing the game of football, and they enjoy doing what they do for a living, and that’s just who they are,” Allen said. “They’re not playing necessarily for contracts, they’re playing because that’s what’s deep down inside their soul. That’s what I see, but I can’t speak for everybody.”
– Strong safety Tyvon Branch is at less than 100 percent heading into the Panthers game. A pain-killing shot helped him make it through the Chiefs game last Sunday.
Allen said he expects Branch to play this Sunday, just knowing how tough and dedicated Branch has been all season.
“He had to take a shot to help him make it through the game,” Allen said, “and anytime you do that, you’re a little more sore when you come back. He’s a warrior, though. He’s a battler. He’s a fighter. He’s going to be out there if he can.”

WTF?!?!?
i wonder how many dirty secrets are in the nfl. Why did seau and belcher and carson blow their brains out?
Why are so many of these guys perverts and weirdos and alcoholics wife beaters and drug addicts?
I suggest that many of them have suffered from sexual and physical abuse, and have been effeminized through mis education.
Once exposed to the trappings of pro sports it is a potent mix of sex drugs and living in a disney world bubble.
We have to come out of this foolishness
THIS IS NOT OUR CULTURE AND THIS IT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU IMITATE ANOTHER MANS CULTURE

Our goal should be to have a group of LBs that can rotate in and out of 4-3 & 3-4 looks.
Not sure Wheeler fits that.

No it wasnt stevie for for Hiram .. hiram was out with an injury in preseason.
btw i was just gonna say HIRAM Eugene was not a good tackler but he could defend the pass. That was another good DB for the RAiders in 2010

Philip Adams and Ross need more playing time, and they are not UFAs.
We should draft a pass rusher and CB because that’s more cost effective than signing good FAs.
Trade down:
1- CB Milliner (assuming the top 3 pass rushers are gone)
2- DE/ OL Dion Jordan (if he is available), OLB A Barr, OLB C Thomas
3- DE Brandon Jenkins
4- BPA and I think that will be RB Michael Dyer or the short/ slow/ troubled CB from LSU.

The problem with Jackson is the league caught up to him after about 5 games in as a play caller. When you can’t score second half points you aren’t a very good playcaller. And like I said, Seattle right now is annihilating their opponents dropping 50 spots on them. Remember when that happened around here? That was Cable.

I believe that a heck alot easier than Seymour being an “elite” player.
“Elite” players make an impact…period.
The only thing that tugs at my Raiders heart strings is when he says he ‘bleeds silver and black’, but then again it’s been proven time and again he’ll say anything to make the fans happy.
Just a very small sampling of Seymour’s b.s statements the past yr.:
-DA has the “it” factor.
-Hue Jackson was a great coach.
-We are a top 5 defense.
-I believe we are a playoff team.
And the GRAND PRIZE WINNER: “I AM AN ELITE PLAYER”.

Was listening to Matt Millen on the Radio this morning. He was going on about the great job the 49er coaches were doing. Then he said, and I’m paraphrasing ” My pet peeve with coaches is not to teach what you know, but to teach what they know”
Sounded like a shot to me, at our coaches.

Wheeler, prototype NFL LB, 6′2″, 240…and loves to play. He sticks his nose in there and does his job. Actually, don’t know why we are discussing this. Anyone really not see this guy as a keeper, 4-3 or 3-4?

88, I agree. These guys are technicians, players “fail” because they don’t fit THEIR system. The whole team? Then fellas, maybe its time to coach. You know, bring the best out of what you got.
December 21st, 2012 at 3:06 pm

He wouldn’t know what a good coaching hire was if it punched him in his crooked nose.
December 21st, 2012 at 3:09 pm
let him be “elite” somewhere else. only thing he would accomplish is taking playing time away from a stud rookie or younger, quicker player. if he takes a pay cut and becomes a situational/rotational player then fine.
December 21st, 2012 at 3:12 pm
Wheeler might be ok in a 3/4.. but he cant really take on ots.. he’d have to set the edge.. so it might not work as well as playing in a 4/3.

Doesnt fit Al’s character..
=======================================
Stevie commands the secondary of a World Championship Team in only his third year in the league. He is playing very very well. That was a Hue cut. Davis drafted him, Cable promoted him to the active roster from the practice squad and Jackson didn’t think he had what it takes. Which is why Jackson is now coaching the Cincy DB’s and they are faltering down the stretch.

Yep Knapp for instance has win a ring on the niners staff or has been a qb coach on the Texans 2001 playoff season……. doesn’t mean he would know what good coaching is if it bent him over and rammed itself hard into him.
Well put it this way…. more truthfully…… they’ve all been around good and great as well as bad coaches but when people do things themselves it doesn’t necessarily mean they will be good at it.
Reggie and Allen true of them too. To date.

How does a team prepare for Cam Newton, the first player in NFL history with 30-plus touchdown passes (39) and 20-plus touchdown runs (21) in his first two seasons?
Well, to hear Raiders players tell it, you pop in third-string quarterback Terrelle Pryor in practice and voila.
“Terrelle is the closest guy to Cam,” running back Mike Goodson said.

Goodson played with Newton in Carolina last year and is with Pryor now in Oakland. And Goodson is not the only one saying how helpful Pryor has been simulating Newton in practice this week.
“It’s been good,” offensive coordinator Greg Knapp said. “You don’t have to coach it up as much on defense” because the players can see it on the practice field.
Knapp said Pryor has done a good job of telling defensive players what he’s seeing and what they’re doing well.

Btw Pryor will return to compete again because he’s done everything asked of him in this new regime and his work ethic and attitude that this regime has asked for Pryor has shown. He’s basically schooled and tailored by this regime. A whole new qb from the draft will be an unknown in these particular regards. Pryor unique talent is greater than any qb in his draft and then you add the work ethic they’re looking for that Pryor has focused on.

Of course Seymour still feels like an elite
Player….on the days he did practice, he went up against knapp’s version of the zbs…that would make any defensive lineman feel elite.

Wow, I feel so ’special’ and ‘honored’ someone hijacked my handle. Just when I thought it was getting better to come back in. Keep up the good work.
Los Raida Locos does not call blogsters names or demeans them. However, he truly feels this coaching staff is pure dog poo. Agree or did agree, don’t matter to me. Mystic is OK with me. So is Mc20. Kool Kell is alright too. Why people feel the need to bang on him is stupid. Bang on the coaching staff. They suck balls.

They’ve been to Super Bowls (on offensive staffs at Dallas, St. Louis – and Norv has been to an AFC championship with the Chargers, losing to the Patriots)
then again, their QBs were Rivers, Aikman and Warner. A far cry from Palmer and definitely way far from T.Pryor.

How low can Big Rich get? Bleeds the Silver and Black?
I guess just about everyone is bleeding out in OakTown. Big Rich should be ashamed of himself, it’s bad enough he has been a genuine fraud ever since he came here, stealing Mr. Davis and the Raider Nation blind. A totally overrated slacker who basically has done as he pleased, check-cashing, and showing up for half a season.
During the pre-season, I proposed an over-under of the number of games he would actually line up for when he was excused from practice. I say line up because he mostly didn’t show up to play, much less lead anyone. Suspiciously, he hurt his hammie when Doug Martin ran all over the Raiders defense.
I don’t know what the cap hit would be if he’s cut, but I believe his salary would accelerate if kept in the 2013 roster. Another high-stakes test for the ZarMac.

maybe a few months earlier, but after that practice blow up with Allen and the Twitter rant. its doubtful he returns.
have to start all over again with Manti Te’o or a secondary guy. or Both , a DL, a OL, maybe even another running back (with McFadden always injured).

Al drafts DVD, he gets signed by a perennial playoff team & .500 squad, who has won 2 superbowls…The same can be said for Chris Johnson….And Reggie cuts him and we sign 2 guys are only good enough to get signed by a 4-10 team…But hey Ron Wolf says the guy can identify talent.

Somebody pulled a boner and we got the shaft. There are dark sinister forces at work here, so plenty of candle light vigils will be needed to exorsize these monsters. Strange. Very strange indeed.

Supposedly, Brandion Ross is quite good. We’ll give Mac the benefit of the doubt until we see this next draft. Dude has his work cut out for him.

if anything, shuffle the assistants. There will be plenty top tier coordinators that will shake out from Philly, Cleveland, San Diego once the hammer falls in the offseason.

Gaither is a reserve, and can play special teams. Which makes him a hall of fame talent over Rolando McClain.
they could draft an ILB, though. He’s a good guy to play with and doesnt bring baggage, which makes him a plus with this crew.

Goodson was OK, not great, but not a bust.
Seymour re-sign might’ve been a mistake.
lets see what he can do with a full draft. There is too much turnover, and too much assumption that the “new” will do better than the old did (we see the results of that thinking).
Steady as she goes – lets get to the combine, get our board up, dont overspend in FA.

The kid doesnt know how to play the ball and doestn tackle. It was horrible

Got to hand it to Seymour, he didn’t want to get traded here, but he made the best of it. He became a team leader and gave us everything he had left.
This season however, he barely played or even practiced. It was one injury after another. I don’t see him getting any better, just older. When his contract expires, he should bow out gracefully.

People on this blog kill me because they talk as if Reggie is exempt from the possibilitie of failure because he was an assistant in greenbay…. But thats the thing, Reggie was just an assistant in GB not the man calling the shots. But leave it to some on here and he was the sole reason gb won their last sb. I understand reggie comes from a successful organization but that doesnt neccessarily guarantee he can build 1 on his own here. Scott pioli came from the pats whose had wayyy more success than the packers over the past 10 years but look at him in kc and its a mess. I dont care where reggie came from and what success he had there because this is the raiders, what he did elswhere is irrelevant here, and so far hes been a dud in my eyes from his lame azz coaching hires and average joe draft picks. Fire DA! Put Reggie on thin ice!

Home » NFL » NFL Draft » Mock Draft 2013 » 2013 NFL Mock Draft: Week 15
Each week Fansided will have a new mock draft to preview and showcase this upcoming April’s draft. For more in depth analysis of each pick, be sure to visit the Fansided site of your favorite team and check back each Monday for a new and updated Mock Draft.
NOTE: This is as accurate a draft order as possible. As the season nears it’s conclusion, the accuracy of the draft positioning will become more pin point. Here is the current draft order.
1. Kansas City Chiefs – Geno Smith, Quarterback, West Virginia
At the end of the season, the Chiefs are going to undergo some serious change. A new general manager, a new head coach and a new stable of talented players. When a new regime takes over, the first thing they need to do is evaluate the quarterback position. That means they will be sifting through the eligible quarterbacks in this year’s draft class and take the man that they think can be the biggest difference maker. This year, that is West Virginia’s Geno Smith.
2. Jacksonville Jaguars – Jarvis Jones, Outside Linebacker/Defensive End, Georgia
The Jaguars need to upgrade along the defensive front seven. One way to do that would be by selecting a player like Jones that has been compared to Denver’s Von Miller. Jones can play with his hand in the dirt and make some plays standing. Jones is battle tested in the toughest conference in college football and he has shown he is an elite pass rusher that can change a game.
3. Philadelphia Eagles – Luke Joeckel, Offensive Tackle, Texas A&M
The Eagles aren’t going to be able to get anything going until they solidify their offensive line. Joeckel is the clear number one prospect at his position and the Eagles will need to pull the trigger. If Nick Foles is going to have any success moving forward, he is going to need a reliable left tackle and that is just what Joeckel will provide.
4. Oakland Raiders – Star Lotulelei, Defensive Tackle, Utah
The Raiders desperately need to upgrade their talent along the defensive line. Luckily for them, that is the strength of the 2013 NFL Draft class. Oakland will have their pick from multiple top tier prospects at a position of need. As it stands now, Lotulelei will be the top available player along the defensive line. Don’t rule out a pass rusher for Oakland, either.
5. Cleveland Browns – Barkevious Mingo, Outside Linebacker/Defensive End, LSU
The Browns would love to land Jarvis Jones with their first pick, but Mingo is an excellent consolation prize. Mingo is considered one of the most naturally gifted pass rushers in this year’s draft class and his size/speed/strength combination has NFL personnel excited about his potential.
6. Tennessee Titans – Bjoern Werner, Defensive End, Florida State
Bjoern Werner is a name that is rapidly rising up NFL Draft boards and he could end up being selected in the top three. For now, Werner would be a perfect fit in Tennessee. As the nation’s most consistent pass rusher, Werner would bring some much needed production to the Titans defensive end position.
7. Detroit Lions – Manti Te’o, Linebacker, Notre Dame
In typical Detroit Lions fashion, the team will go with the best player on their board. Grabbing a linebacker like Te’o may not be as big of a need as grabbing a top tier cornerback, but at this point Te’o is too good to pass up. This could be a spot where teams would be looking to jump up ahead of Buffalo and Arizona to snag a quarterback, in which case they could land the corner they desire like Dee Milliner or Johnathan Banks.
8. San Diego Chargers – Dee Milliner, Cornerback, Alabama
Milliner is the clear number one cornerback prospect in this draft. Milliner could have gone to Detroit just a pick earlier, so if he remains on the board it would be the pick San Diego needs to make. Two of the Chargers top defensive backs will become free agents after the season and they can ill afford to allow a top talent like Milliner slip through their fingers.
9. Buffalo Bills – Damontre Moore, DE/OLB, Texas A&M
It may not be the biggest need for the Bills, but after the past two weeks they have shown they desperately need help on the defensive side of the ball. You can never have too many pass rushers and Moore is considered a possible top 5 talent. Moore still has a lot of room to develop and he could learn behind Mario Williams and Mark Anderson before he is ready to make a major impact.
10. Carolina Panthers – Johnathan Hankins, Defensive Tackle, Ohio State
Carolina would love to get their hand on Star Lotulelei, but he will be long gone before the Panthers are on the clock. Hankins would provide the team with a big body to place along their interior line and hopefully improve their rush defense.

This guy is easily one of my Favorite College Players
Bjoern Werner, Defensive End, Florida State
December 21st, 2012 at 8:32 pm
Kansas City Chiefs: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
This pick largely depends on what happens with Scott Pioli. If he’s fired, as the awesome @saveourchiefs movement is pushing for, this selection will be used on a quarterback. There currently is no signal-caller worth taking No. 1 overall, but that could easily change. Remember two years ago when ESPN was mocking Da’Quan Bowers and Nick Fairley to the Panthers? Well, Cam Newton ballooned to the top, as will some other quarterback this year. If not, the Chiefs could always trade down.
If Pioli is retained, he’ll pick Luke Joeckel, Manti Te’o or Star Lotulelei and then go for Mike Glennon in the second round. I’ve heard from a reliable source that Pioli really likes Glennon. Mel Kiper, by the way, stated that Glennon could be the first signal-caller off the board, so maybe the Wolfpack product will be the quarterback who rises to the top of the draft. A lot will change over the next four months.
By the way, I’m doing this live because I thought it’d be fun to get instant feedback. I’m going to post my mock anyway, so why not do it this way? Follow @walterfootball for updates.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Jarvis Jones, DE/OLB, Georgia
I’ve been mocking a quarterback to the Jaguars for the longest time because it’s been clear that Blaine Gabbert is a sunk cost. I argued that there was no way in hell Jacksonville could go into the 2013 season and sell its fans on Gabbert for another year.
However, two things have happened. First, Matt Barkley has completely fallen off and cannot be taken at No. 2 overall right now. And second, Chad Henne was brilliant in two starts prior to playing the three AFC East teams. Unless this downward spiral continues, what the Jaguars can sell the fans on is Henne as a bridge to a young quarterback they take in Round 2. Thus, they’ll be free to snag someone as talented as Jarvis Jones.
Jones would be a huge boost to a defense that has missed strongside linebacker Daryl Smith all year. Smith is a free agent, so if he’s not re-signed, Jones would be a worthy replacement. He would function as Von Miller does in Denver, rushing the quarterback in obvious passing situations.
Oakland Raiders: Star Lotulelei, NT, Utah
Is there any doubt the Raiders need help at defensive tackle in the wake of Doug Martin’s near-record performance?
Richard Seymour’s contract will be voided at the end of the season. Meanwhile, Tommy Kelly is a bum who doesn’t care about winning, as evidenced when he laughed after prolonging a San Diego drive with a pair of offside penalties. He’s played so sluggishly this year and was especially bad versus Tampa, so there’s no chance he’s going to see a penny of his $6.5 million salary in 2013. He’s as good as gone, and 15-year-old head coach Dennis Allen lost all respect in the locker room for not cutting him after the opener.
Philadelphia Eagles: Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M
Is there any doubt that the Eagles have to upgrade their offensive line? Their tackle position is in shambles. Jason Peters tore his Achilles; Demetress Bell has been a bust signing; while King Dunlap simply sucks. Even if Peters comes back close to 100 percent, an upgrade could be made at right tackle, which would allow Todd Herremans to move back to his natural guard position.
Luke Joeckel had a slow start to his 2012 campaign, but he’s improved tremendously, even stifling the LSU pass-rushers. He could easily go in the top four, right after a quarterback and some order of Jarvis Jones and Star Lotulelei.
Detroit Lions: Damontre Moore, DE/OLB, Texas A&M
The Lions’ draft strategy is to pick the top player on their board. It just so happens that the best prospect available happens to fill a huge need.
Kyle Vanden Bosch likely won’t be back with the team next season because of his $5 million salary, while the other exterior pass-rushers, excluding Cliff Avril, have barely done anything this year.
Damontre Moore recently said he plans on returning to school, but he did leave the door open by saying, “I’ll look at it.” What he’ll see is everyone projecting him to be a top-eight pick. That could prompt him to change his mind.
Pick change; previously Manti Te’o, ILB
San Diego Chargers: Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
The Chargers almost have to make this pick. Philip Rivers appears to be regressing, but it’s impossible to tell if that’s the case because he’s getting slaughtered behind a pathetic offensive line. San Diego cannot, under any circumstances, enter the 2013 season with Jared Gaither as its starting left tackle. He’s just way too injury-prone and unreliable.
Pick change; previously DeMarcus Milliner, CB
Buffalo Bills: Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
This is a reach – I had Tyler Wilson in the second round of last week’s update – but we’ve seen second-day talents like Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder go in the top 12. Teams are so desperate for quarterbacks that they’ll make moves like this.
General manager Buddy Nix, who is generally forthcoming about his offseason plans, told the media that he plans on drafting a franchise quarterback. He even said he’ll trade up for one in the 2013 NFL Draft. He may have been talking about Geno Smith if the Chiefs pass on him, but he won’t have to move anywhere for Wilson.
Pick change; previously Bjoern Werner, DE/OLB
Cleveland Browns: Manti Te’o, LB, Notre Dame
Manti Te’o makes lots of sense for the Browns if Damontre Moore and Jarvis Jones are off the board. He could either play the middle, which would move D’Qwell Jackson to a more natural weakside position, or they could just station Te’o at strongside linebacker, where he would replace the soon-to-be-retired Scott Fujita. Regardless, an upgrade at linebacker is desperately needed.
Pick change; previously Dion Jordan, DE
Carolina Panthers: Johnathan Hankins, NT, Ohio State
I was told by a reliable source not to mock Fletcher Cox to the Panthers because they were satisfied with their current group of defensive tackles. Based on the rushing yardage they recently surrendered to Bryce Brown and Jamaal Charles, I highly doubt they’ll feel the same way in April. Besides, Johnathan Hankins is one of the best players available.
I thought about mocking DeMarcus Milliner to the Panthers as well, by the way. It was a close call, but I’m still going with Hankins for now.
Tennessee Titans: DeMarcus Milliner, CB, Alabama
The Titans were interested in drafting a highly ranked cornerback at No. 20 back in April, but neither Stephon Gilmore nor Dre Kirkpatrick fell to them. Maybe they’ll have more luck in the 2013 NFL Draft, as they do in this situation with one of the top players available filling a big need. Alterraun Verner will be entering his contract year in 2013, so Tennessee will need a new starter if it can’t retain him. Besides, the Titans need to fix their 21st-ranked pass defense.

NFL Mock Draft – 12/20/2012
ROUND 1
1. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia: Whether the Chiefs explore free agency, trade or the draft, clearly this is a team in need of new blood at quarterback. Smith is not held in the same regard as past No. 1 overall picks Andrew Luck or Cam Newton, but the 6-3, 220 pound senior completed 71.4 percentof his passes for 40 touchdowns and just six interceptions during the regular season. Mobile, intelligent, accurate and possessing a strong arm, Smith’s upside could be enough to convince the Chiefs he’s worth the gamble.
2. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State: The Jacksonville Jaguars currently rank 29th in the NFL in rush defense, allowing an average of 145.7 yards per game and have given up 18 touchdowns on the ground in just 13 games. Worse, they’re dead last in the league with just 14 sacks in 13 games. The instinctive, physical Seminole would help in both areas, as well as help spark interest in a lagging fan base.
3. OAKLAND RAIDERS
Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia: The Raiders rank just one ahead of the Jaguars for last in the league with just 17 quarterback sacks in 12 games. The Raiders historically have shied away from linebackers in the first round, but general manager Reggie McKenzie’s won’t allow the team’s past to dictate their future, especially with an impact pass rusher available. Talent isn’t the concern with Jones, though health may be. He was a star at USC before transferring to Georgia and enjoying consecutive all-conference campaigns. A neck injury, however, led to his transfer from the Trojans three years ago. Though he’s had no known problems since, it will require a close inspection at the Combine, should the redshirt junior elect to leave for the NFL a year early.
4. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M: Should head coach Andy Reid be on his way out in Philadelphia as many anticipate, don’t put it past the Eagles’ new head coach to elect to protect the team’s investments made in quarterbacks Michael Vick and Nick Foles by adding to the team’s offensive line. The Eagles boast plenty of talent on the roster but injuries have robbed them off the continuity necessary to win consistently. Joeckel, the junior left tackle who quietly has played a critical role in Aggie quarterback Johnny Manziel’s Heisman season, is NFLDraftScout.com’s top-rated prospect for the 2013 draft.
5. DETROIT LIONS
Manti Te’o, ILB, Notre Dame: Despite boasting as much talent up front defensively as any team in the league, the Lions remain very average in run defense, currently ranking 20th in the league. Te’o instincts and physicality would help improve this area. Perhaps just as importantly, his passion and selflessness might provide the leadership this team is sorely lacking.
6. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M: There are plenty of theories as to why Philip Rivers hasn’t played up to his previous standards in recent years. Perhaps the most logical is the turnstile that he’s been forced to overcome at left tackle. Matthews has played on the strong-side throughout his Aggies’ career but like his Hall of Fame father, Bruce Matthews, he’s capable of making the transition to virtually whatever role his future NFL team most needs him.
7. CLEVELAND BROWNS
Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M: With the pieces seemingly coming together, Cleveland will be looking for immediate impact with this pick, which almost surely means a pass rusher. Capable of lining up as a defensive end or outside linebacker, Moore has the athleticism and versatility to do precisely that.
8. BUFFALO BILLS
Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas: While incumbent starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is far from the team’s weakest link, few believe he is the caliber of quarterback that can lead Buffalo to a Super Bowl. Furthermore, general manager Buddy Nix has specifically stated he hopes to find the team’s quarterback of the future. Wilson, along with Georgia and Tennessee underclassmen Aarron Murray and Tyler Bray, respectively, have the arm talent and success against quality competition that could force a desperate team to gamble on draft day.
9. TENNESSEE TITANS
Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah: The clear dominant team in the AFC South division is Houston and for the Titans to compete with them, they’ll need to be able to slow down the Texans’ dominant ground game. Lotulelei has been NFLDraftScout.com’s top-rated senior defender all year long due to his ability to clog running lanes and improving pass rush.
10. CAROLINA PANTHERS
Johnathan Hankins, DT, Ohio State: One of the Panthers’ few bright spots this season has been the play of defensive ends Charles Johnson and Greg Hardy. Carolina’s defensive tackles could use an upgrade and Hankins is a terrific talent. With no elite receivers to help take the pressure off of Cam Newton, the Panthers and their defense-oriented head coach, Ron Rivera, could resort to the time-honored tradition of taking the best player available.
December 21st, 2012 at 8:39 pm
If DA the selfish double agent gets his team up to play and even beat Carolina, we could go from a top 6 pick to out of the top 10. Chew on that…
December 21st, 2012 at 8:40 pm
NFL Mock Draft – 12/21/2012
ROUND 1
1. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia: The Chiefs’ offense, which averages a paltry 13.9 points per game, has really struggled through the air with 16 interceptions and just eight passing touchdowns. Geno Smith has cooled off the past few weeks after his hot start, but he has NFL tools and would give Kansas City an upgrade at quarterback.
2. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State: The Jaguars have drafted offense in the top-10 the past two years (Blaine Gabbert, Justin Blackmon) and with a young foundation on that side of the ball, they should look to the defense with this pick. Jacksonville ranks last in the league in sacks (15.0) and Werner brings an athletic, physical presence against both the run and pass, in the mold of Chris Long.
3. OAKLAND RAIDERS
Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU: The Raiders have a lot of beef on their defensive line, but need to add more speed to get after the passer, ranking near-last in the league in sacks (21.0). Mingo has the speed and athletic skill-set that would make the late Al Davis proud.
4. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Luke Joeckel, OT, Texas A&M: Just like other positions on the Eagles depth chart, offensive tackle looked to be a strength, but injuries have really taken a toll on this team. Although Jason Peters injury situation will be a factor in Philadelphia choosing a tackle, Joeckel has the chance to grow into one of the NFL’s best.
5. DETROIT LIONS
Manti Te’o, ILB, Notre Dame: The Lions have been very streaky on defense and need to add some leadership on that side of the ball. Te’o would not only bring his talented skill-set to Detroit, but he would also bring a positive influence to a squad with more than a few questionable characters.
6. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M: The Chargers have questions at both tackle spots and while they hope Jared Gaither is part of the solution, his durability remains to be a concern. Matthews can be overlooked by his Aggie counterpart (Joeckel), but a player with his bloodlines and talent won’t last long on draft day.
7. CLEVELAND BROWNS
Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama: Even with new ownership and likely a new coach, the Browns will probably give Brandon Weeden another year at quarterback, mostly because there aren’t any better options out there. The biggest need for Cleveland is in the secondary, lacking an impact corner opposite Joe Haden.
8. BUFFALO BILLS
Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri: The Bills invested a lot of money in their defensive line, most recently adding Mario Williams to rush the passer. While defensive tackle is far from their largest need, drafting Richardson will only help the Bills’ depth up front.
9. TENNESSEE TITANS
Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M: The Titans have received very average production from their starting defensive ends Kamerion Wimbley and Derrick Morgan (8.5 combined sacks) and with little depth behind them, the Titans need to add another rusher to the fold.
10. CAROLINA PANTHERS
Star Lotulelei, DT, Utah: The interior of the Panthers’ defensive line has been a question mark since Kris Jenkins left in 2007 and, ironically, Carolina haven’t invested a top-50 draft pick on a defensive tackle since Jenkins over a decade ago. Lotulelei isn’t as consistent as scouts would like, but when he’s firing on all cylinders, he’s tough to control.

Question: If Pryor is so good why isn’t he ahead of Leinart on the depth chart?
December 21st, 2012 at 8:47 pm
1. Kansas City Chiefs – Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
A 15-0 loss to Oakland sticks a fork in the idea that the Chiefs could or should stay away from a quarterback with the first pick. The offense is inept, outside Jamaal Charles and you won’t win many games without a top quarterback in today’s NFL. The new regime in KC will bank their future on West Virginia’s signal caller. While he struggled a bit down the stretch, a solid showing in pre-draft workouts will vault Geno back to the top.
2. Jacksonville Jaguars – Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State
The Chiefs and Jags appear to be dead set on battling until the end for the top pick. They were beat up by a so-so Miami squad to solidify themselves as a full fledged candidate for the top spot. Don’t let the Jason Babin selection fool you into thinking the Jags won’t take a pass rusher if they sit in this spot. Babin could wind up being a rental for the season leaving the Jags empty handed at DE. Werner is the top pass rusher in a stacked class. He’s a much better athlete than given credit for and adds the bonus of being able to stop the run. He’s the most complete of the bunch and a very worthy selection with the 2nd pick.
3. Oakland Raiders – Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
Tommy Kelly and Richard Seymour could both be gone after this season. Neither has proven worthy of their hefty contracts and could be upgraded. Many will think this is too high for Richardson…now. Richardson is a dynamic athlete at DT, he may challenge Warren Sapp’s 40 time at the combine. He possesses an elite first step and is the most disruptive DT in this class which includes some very good prospects.
—————
Seems a bit far fetched at the moment, but you know how guys rise and fall after the combine.

Who did we have back then? Chew on that. And if he ever does make a comeback, you better hope it is NOT with and AFC West team, or we will be looking at years of struggle beating whatever team he opts to play for. Question: If Pryor is so good why isn’t he ahead of Leinart on the depth chart?
==========================
Cause our coaches suck and do not want a QB controversy, why else would they not allow him to play. It’s not rocket science. Sheeeeze. You got a 17mil arm you want to bench? Sheeeeze. I think not. Pryor will either be our QB of the future, or someone elses and it will come back to bite us in the rump, like everything else has. Look at the coaches. Sheeeeze.

Didnt expect instant success but also didnt expect instant regression either. This team was 8-8 2 years running with a solid offense and reason to be optomistic, since reggie has come in all the optomism has deflated and weve become a laughing stock. If he was really good as they say he should be able to take an 8-8 team and improve them but hes done the opposite. Sorry that I refuse to be a gullibe and nieve fan like some. And Priest put his patented kiss of death on Harrison Barnes.
After he said he “will average 25ppg in a season”, he has struggled to put up 4 points a game.
Goose egg the other night, 4 points on 0-7 tonight.
He is a dreaded two foot jumper only. Can’t finish because he has to set and collect before jumping.
He is now 12th amongst rookies in scoring. Bad pick.

Long time listener, first time caller. Great blog site, full of Raider info. Good stuff. Just wanted to drop in and say I think the Raiders can pull a win Sunday if the coaches can keep their depends from getting to soiled. We have good players, but I think they don’t really want to play for coaches who aren’t yet potty trained. We need coaches whos’ balls have dropped. Coaches who have some man hair around the you know what. If they don’t win on Sunday, it’ll be a long trip home. Nothing like feeling dejected after a buttox whoopin. I think the players need to play for better contracts, specially the FAs’ and the ones that want out. If they do that, we can win. Also, want to give a big shout out to my bros’ in Redwood City, San Bruno, and San Jose. Y’all keep bein Raider. Outro!

Rod Streater with a big game.

Cavs are talented though. Dont get me wrong.
December 21st, 2012 at 10:44 pm
Aren’t the Cavs like 7-20?
They stink. Maybe we can trade them a future pick for Sideshow Bob for our playoff run this season.
December 21st, 2012 at 10:45 pm
I hope the best for Streater and our other WRs, but the Raiders need a legit #1 wide receiver. We’ve been stuck with prospects who turn out to be #2 or #3 guys for the past decade.
December 21st, 2012 at 10:47 pm
I think Streater can be a great #2, but not sure if he can be a top-shelf #1.
Most of those guys have elite size, all though not all of them.
Could be a Steve Smith, Victor Cruz type, smallish #1.
December 21st, 2012 at 10:49 pm
This Sunday is a win/win. IF we win the game it’ll end that stupid east coast trip thing and be a real good sign moving forward. Even tho half the guys on the field for us won’t be here next yr. but still.
Also, it would be a humiliating defeat for certain Cam Newton lovers who aren’t really Raiders fans…but pretend they are just so they can use this forum for their own personal soap box to talk about political and social issues and who have a massive hatred for white QB’s for no good reason.
If we lose…it helps our draft position.

Have no fear. The Double Agent will do his best to have this team prepared to win. It’s crunch time and he feels his seat warming. Needs to win 2 of his last 3 to be retained for next year and ensure that we don’t get a top 10 pick. Reggie can then tell Mark ‘you see? we’re turning the corner!’.
Then the Double Agent will complete his screw job next year and shuffle on back to the Donks to give Fox a reach around.

Image is a double edged sword.
Raiders will always have a bad rep becuz of the colors..the history and that “Oakland bad boy” image.
It used to work in our favor. We used to be intimidating.
DA is not the poster boy for intimidation…but neither was Flores…or any of our coaches really, but our players used to be pretty tuff back in the day.
Come to think of it, maybe that’s one of the reasons Gruden was/is so popular with us…he’s probably the baddest boy coach we’ve ever had. At least the “image” of him with that scowl on the sidelines and his fiery demeanor in the lockerroom.
The fact he won with us doesn’t hurt.

==================================================
Do you not think he has been running the scout team all year? They practice against each other and try to make plays against each other in practice. Guys are pretty fired up. If he could make plays in practice, he would be out there on the field. Like Hagan and Streator and Stewart.
And what’s not to like about this kid? Maybe the fact that he sold out the entire Ohio State University and a very solid coach in Jim Tressell. OSU just happened to have an undefeated season and can’t play in the BCS National Championship Game because of sanctions mainly caused by Pryor even though he was counseled over and over and over again not to do anything stupid. Maybe that is a reason to not trust him with another franchise or institution.

Raiders finish 6-10… only 2 games off the pace of last year’s 8-8 team while installing new front office, new coaching staff, new schemes on offense and defense, turning over half the roster, and a harder schedule.
What happens then…
I sure hope they make a move at OC but it looks more and more like they won’t. Even if they lose these last 2 games.

Finished 2009 strong, carried over to the first .500 season in awhile in 2010, finished with some nice wins that season, that carried over to a fast start to 2011, fell apart the end of last season and that carried over to the beginning of this season.

December 22nd, 2012 at 9:50 am
Trade down if possible (not going to be easy).
1- CB D Milliner
2- OLB A Barr (Chico’s guy)
3- DE B Jenkins
4- RB Michael Dyer or the Short/ Slow/ troubled CB from LSU. He can be our NB.
December 22nd, 2012 at 9:51 am
Biggest needs:
-Speed rusher (but not a speed rusher ONLY in the first round, i.e Jarvis Jones)
-Back-end secondary help (could be DB, SS or FS for that matter. They are all replacable).
-Interior lineman (replacing Briesel with a stud G would represent the biggest instant upgrade possible. Or get a Center, move Wiz to guard and boot Briesel back to Texas.)
-Return man (don’t even get me started on this. Should be the easiest hole to fix, yet we have amazingly gotten worse this season, from a disastrous 2011.)

Trade down if possible (not going to be easy).
**************************
Thank you, trading down will be harder this year than any other year of late. Not enough top-shelf guys teams will be wanting to trade up to get.
The only real trade down scenarios I can see that add value would be picking in the 7-10 range, and have Geno Smith or Te’O fall to us, and then a team moves up for them.
Otherwise, we could trade down a little, but it would be the trade down from #7 to #10, but get only a 2014 2nd rounder, and 2013 4th rounder, type thing.
No big coup to be had this year.
December 22nd, 2012 at 9:55 am
I think our best bet to get a 2nd rounder is to package a later pick with a player.
Say McNinny and a 5th rounder for a 2nd, Huff and a 2014 3rd for a 2nd, type deal.
December 22nd, 2012 at 9:58 am
Chico,
What can you tell us about Barr? We know he can rush the passer with 10+ sacks?
Can he play 4-3 and cover like V Miller, is he fast, etc..?
December 22nd, 2012 at 9:59 am
2- OLB A Barr (Chico’s guy)
**************************
I think he will be a better pro than Jarvis Jones.
Remember, Jones is like the oldest guy on the field every week. He is already 23 years old, Barr is only 20, and just started to play defense.
Barr = Jason Taylor 2.0
December 22nd, 2012 at 10:01 am
Played RB in high school and WR/TE his first two years at UCLA.
His first year at LB, he only lead the nation in sacks. Not bad.
Tall, angular frame, and needs to add some weight to bang in the running game.
But who is more likely to add some weight naturally and easily, a 20 year old or a 23 year old (Jones)?
Can’t imagine he falls into the 2nd round, he will own the combine.

As you know, the draft is about Value. Btw, I like D Moore a lot.
DE Brabdon Jenkins from FSU was injured the 1st game of the season, but he was a 1st round prospect before his injusry, which helped the German Kid (I forgot his name). I Hope we can get him in the 3rd.
December 22nd, 2012 at 10:04 am
Our offense has been pretty sad. Not sure why you would be surprised to see a playmaker added to the offense in rd 1.
December 22nd, 2012 at 10:04 am
I was/am a Ziggy Ansah fan, but was a little concerned with the way ESPN kept saying that his HC Mendenhall was very passionate about the need to “surround him with the right people before the draft”.
I know that is vital for about every draft pick, but I was using my reading between the lines skills on that one and it was of concern.

Guys like Kam Wimbley are available every offseason, lol.

I would think a former WR/TE would have those “fluid hips” I always hear about more so than other OLB’s, but I don’t think he was asked to do it much.
Seems that is always the million dollar questions with every LB prospect.
Must really can’t, few can.

If our offense is “pretty sad” then our defense is miserable.
It’s cheaper to draft a good CB or pass rusher than to sign a good FA due to new rookie salary cap.
December 22nd, 2012 at 10:10 am
I was watching the Titans-Jets fiasco (sometime awful football is just as enjoyable to me as good football, in a sick way).
Kam Wimbley was still just doing his patented dip move, nearly every play.
Amazing that a guy can last that long in the league with one move.
But hey, Avery Johnson played a dozen years in the NBA with zero ability to go to his right, so sometimes guys are just really good at one thing and it can carry them throughout their career.
December 22nd, 2012 at 10:11 am
J,
The top WR prospects in this draft are Woods at USC and Keenan Allen at Cal, supposedly, and I don’t think either are instant difference makers.
If Marquis Lee was coming out, I would be all over trying to get him at any cost.
Pass on the WR in round 1. I think we will FINALLY get that vet WR this offseason in FA.
Watch for Greg Jennings.
December 22nd, 2012 at 10:12 am
O,
It’s cheaper to draft a WR too.
December 22nd, 2012 at 10:13 am
The WR from Tenn?
December 22nd, 2012 at 10:14 am
Plus, the reason I like Barr as well, is I believe that Seymour Bush made a great point about West Coast teams excelling with West Coast guys.
Barr is a WC cat that would love to play in Cali still.
Do we draft ANOTHER dude from the South, who for some reason would rather be in his dump of a hometown in Georgia than in the Bay Area?
That hasn’t seemed to work out so well of late. Guys like McClain, Jamarcus, even Seymour, high-tail it out of town the first moment they can.
December 22nd, 2012 at 10:15 am
And of course I’m looking at us drafting around 12 after we win out.

I don’t want the 4th best DE at 12.
Would rather have the #1 WR, OG, RT, or S.

*************************
I think his name is Justin Houston, and he drops waaaay too many passes to be a top 10 pick.
He will be a combine freak as well though.
December 22nd, 2012 at 10:18 am
I like Chance Womack early, as he is the clear cut #1 prospect at his position.
However, does he have the footwork necessary to excel in Gregg Knapp’s offense?
(Just kidding O)
December 22nd, 2012 at 10:30 am
Warmack’s would probably fit best in a power man-blocking scheme as a professional. He could use his strength to drive open running lanes. Warmack may not have the speed and athleticism for a zone-blocking scheme. He could drop some weight to be a better fit if drafted into that type of rushing offense.

Knapp’s offense is a joke Chico, and OG is not an impact player. We need talent and impact players, and I don’t think drafting an OG in the 1st is good value since we run the ZBS, we have other needs, and we need impact players.

Whether you like it or not the lines(and backers to an extent) will be our focus with our top three picks for the next two years. We will do that to build a core and start controlling the lines. The results will be wins.
9 of your starting 22 (41%) plays exclusively in the box.
OLines create time and space. Dlines destroy time and space.
THAT IS WHAT THE GAME IS ABOUT. The rest of the pieces fill in the gaps.
Do you really think we are going to be a consistently, strong, winning franchise building our lines with low round draft picks or free agents?
Taken to another extreme, do you think we will be able to beat our competition when they consistently use high picks to build this part of their team?
These are typically 270-320 pound athletes that need to have the agility and quickness of college level skill players. Do you really think you are likely to find premier or at least very good lineman in the fifth to seventh round or packing out at Wal Mart THAT ARE BETTER THAN WHAT OTHER NFL TEAMS HAVE?
You are certainly entitled to your opinion but I would strongly suggest that the laws of probability are against us. Better yet, we have a classic example of what that strategy gets us; The 2012 Oakland Raiders.
HINT: We need to build OUR CORE through the draft and expend enough high round draft picks on lineman to ensure superior line play. The way the Raiders used to do it. You build the core of your team through the draft. You use FA’s for niche pieces to buy time or plug a hole.
We have 10 years of evidence to show that what we have been doing DOES NOT WORK!
December 22nd, 2012 at 11:23 am
I see JFB and J Hill are drinking the koolaid this fine morning, bless your optimistic hearts. I just can’t see us winning either of these last two games esp on the road. Cam is hot and I can’t see a scenario where we slow him down. SD still has some good players and I think they will send Norv out in style. Imo our only chance against them is if we can dominate their oline which is very possible. BTW JFB D Moore who is my fav draft prospect played in the 4-3 this season but can play in either scheme.
December 22nd, 2012 at 11:25 am

Somebody who gets it.
Forget about winning out this year.
Next year is most likely a seven win season.
We may start to make a playoff push in 2014.
Way too many holes on the lines and too few high round picks available.
December 22nd, 2012 at 11:37 am
I think one of the reasons why this regression screws us so badly is that we’ve lost appeal to FAs as a result, which means we’d have to spend more money in order to acquire them. If we had been a .500 team who played their opponents tough then Reggie and DA would have built themselves a touch of credibility as a staff. Instead, we’re just another struggling team desperate to improve.
Messing up the offense cost us in more ways than one, on other words.

I know I’m repeating myself, but I honestly think it would have the most immediate, positive impact on our offense. Just imagine going into next season with this year’s group + random UDFAs and a mediocre veteran FA or two. Bad news!

Bowe/Jennings Moore and Ford would be a Lethal combo imo.
December 22nd, 2012 at 12:12 pm
Rockstar
The only lineman on the free agent list we will keep will be Bryant. We will try to get a year out of Carter.
Lechler will need to take much less or he is gone as well.
Too many cap issues with a guy like Kelly making $70 mill over 5 years. Ridiculous money for an overrated backup.
The scary reality is that as of about a month ago, 13 players the Raiders had on the team last year are completely out of the NFL. That number has gone up since then.
That is how thin our talent is compared with the rest of the league.
McClain will be cut. Seymour and Shaugnessy are gone.
Carlisle will retire. Barnes is very limited(see Denver) but may get us by one more year.
That means at a MINIMUM we need a DT and DE with our first two picks. We can hope Bergstrom can take over for Carlisle. We then run our offense with the limitation of having to max protect for Barnes for one season.
Gee, maybe Knapp does not have as much to work with as some on this blog think he does?

That is why I can not stand big contracts for free agents. Alsmost never works out.
Draft young hungry rookies with the salary cap and keep the best ones after four years.
My recommendation of a DT then a DE with our first two picks could really upgrade the unit.
New stud DT with Kelly, Bilikudi and Bryant makes a decent four man rotation.
A new DE with Carter, Houston and Tollefson would be an upgrade as well.

I don’t dispute that teams are built on the lines, but we are currently ranked as the # 9 OL in the league right now. I know stats can be deceiving.
GB has the WORST Oline in the league (stat wise) and yet they just clinched the division and are a very good…if not great team. Obviously Aaron Rodgers has alot to do with that.
If we are following the GB “model” going forward, I would look for Reggie to go after receivers WHO CAN CATCH the ball. GB is loaded at QB and receiver…just so darn dangerous.
W/O an Aaron Rodgers…it’ll be interesting to see where Reggie goes with this.
Our D line needs alot of help for sure.

But he doesn’t make the game changing impact you might hope for with a guy who’s paid like that.
Where was he when Detroit was going 99 1/2 yd’s. Or when Buffalo was scoring TD’s on every posession the 2nd half of that game, or the last game with SD when we desperately needed SOMEONE…ANY FREAKING ONE to step up and make a play.

December 22nd, 2012 at 2:43 pm
Only way Seymour comes back is if we bring him on veteran minimum contract with and only way to get him to play is if the contract is filled with incentives like he has to get certain number of sacks , tackles Etc etc go earn extra 2-3 million
December 22nd, 2012 at 2:44 pm
Didn’t Seymour fail to show for the non-mandatory OTAs ?
Worked out on his own instead of under the supervision of the strength and conditioning coaches ?
Not saying the pulled hammy and knee issues could have been avoided – but who knows ?
Props to Sey for arriving with the rookies in the past and going into his own pocket to finance practices during the lockout – but we sure didn’t see that ‘leadership’ before the 2012 season commenced, did we ?
Then you’re injured and unavailable virtually the entire season and still yapping about being a leader and still being elite ?
Hilarious.
December 22nd, 2012 at 2:49 pm
Rich Seymour is probably still talented , but the desire doesn’t seem there ,I don’t know if he doesn’t care anymore or if he needs to be on a team that’s fighting for a championship , same with Kelly , he can dominate as well he just doesn’t bring it on every play , which is why my favorite player on D is L Houston , The dudes motor is going nonstop 150 MPH

I agree McFadden20. I really like Adams. At first, that comical fumble against Baltimore had me thinking..”what kind of schlep is this?”, but he has definitely come on. He looks back at the ball and has the quickness to do that, and then still catch up to the receiver.
He has a cockiness about him as well…I like the way he celebrates and seems genuinely into it.
December 22nd, 2012 at 3:05 pm

If it really is that a QB…franchise QB….would’ve brought us to 7-7 or 9-5 this year, as some have suggested, then that’s what we need.
I don’t know if I believe that any other QB would’ve had us any better than what we are, but if i can be convinced of that then is a Geno Smith THAT type of guy?
I don’t mean a guy that sits and learns on the bench and all that, i’m talking start from DAY ONE….like Luck and RG3 and others.

Kobe might just punch him in the head if he keeps missing them while the other team is fouling him intentionally.
December 22nd, 2012 at 4:53 pm
I am not sure where I stand on Geno Smith.
First off, he is a smart kid by all accounts, and his best skill is a much-needed skill, and that is his accuracy in the short to intermediate throws. Reminds me very much of Matt Ryan in that regard. Not a HUGE arm, but strong enough and deadly accurate on throws 30 yards and in.
At the same time, he never really seemed comfortable against the best teams he played, is from Miami and seemed bothered by the cold (body language was like “WTF it is COLD!!!”) and is not a great athlete. Also never plays under center, and we see those issues popup sometimes with Tebow and even Kapy, who keep fumbling snaps. Never took many hits either.
I wouldn’t mind if we drafted him, and I also wouldn’t mind if KC drafted him. He hoes have some bust-potential to him.

Jumpin lizards. How much better off would this team have been if we just woulda kept Coach Hue. We’ve been nuthin but bottom feeders and the future looks ugly with this current staff. Why would any player on this team want to risk injury for these coaches. Anybody who trashes what coulda been a good team needs a serious rectum examination. You really need to look deep, long and hard up the anus to see if they even got a clue.

I’m not sold at all on Geno. Seems like a guy who when things are going right, he’s comfortable, but when there is just a little bit of pressure he looks extremely uncomfortable. There have been two many good college qb’s who come into the pros look like this and have completely failed. I’m convinced he won’t be able to handle the pros.

This is the result of Al’s meddling, you donkey.
Al stupidly threw money at players that didn’t deserve, and was the biggest tightwad in the world when it came to paying coaches.

Only if Conner Barwin or Cliff Avril is available in FA – i’d think Houston would be a keeper.
Dashon Goldson would be a nice upgrade over Huff at safety, and they could draft Robert Lester if Branch moves on.
Would anyone take that contract, though?
Saints will be cleaning house – maybe Allen could call some favors in on some of his ex-guys over there…. they’ll be some turnover on other rosters.

Three of Oakland’s four wins have come against Kansas City (twice) and Jacksonville, the two teams vying for the NFL’s top draft choice with 2-14 records.

What if the Raiders finish the year with wins at Carolina and San Diego?
Raiders finish 6-10… only 2 games off the pace of last year’s 8-8 team while installing new front office, new coaching staff, new schemes on offense and defense, turning over half the roster, and a harder schedule.
============================================
***CORRECTION***
Harder schedule?
2012 opposing teams winning percentage -> .455
2011 opposing teams winning percentage -> .504
2012 opposing teams at or above .500 -> 6
2011 opposing teams at or above .500 -> 10
FALSE
……
7 games against playoff teams from last year – Steelers, Ravens, Broncos (2), Saints, Bengals, Falcons
4 of those on the road
Miami – who beat us last year – East coast game following a Monday night game
Final 2 on the road
Last year – 6 games against playoff teams from the year before – Only 2 of those on the road
2 of final 3 games at home
Played a Bears team with backup QB and a Vikings team without Peterson(for the most part)
Played a Broncos team with Tebow starting(and somehow still lost!!!!)
So I would consider this year a harder schedule.

If we consider Knapp a goner. But Reggie/Allen wanting to maintain the WCO. What current OC’s or current position coaches from a WCO background, that Reggie/Allen could hire for next season?
We’d have to assume they’d want to continue the WCO offense as they’ve been teaching that system, and one thing that can be said of the regime, is they’re after continuity come hell or highwater.
Obviously, if we could Norv Turner at OC, and go back to a vertical offense. But do you think Reggie/Allen are that apt to making a drastic change? They’re not the types who’ve shown that yet.
So, just for this hypothetical Q&A, focus on WCO proponents.

Mark Davis:
The odds of Mark Davis selling his control over the Raiders before they play a meaningful game in 2013 is next to zero. Reggie McKenzie and Dennis Allen might as well be Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear (movie: Stuck On You) because they’re conjoined twins (for the moment).
Mark Davis may be as disgusted with the performance of the team as the rest of Raider Nation; However, that being said I don’t believe that he’s sooo disgusted that he’s ready to fire Reggie McKenzie. Firing McKenzie at this point would only facilitate Mr. Davis beginning a new general manager search; He may be disgusted, but he ain’t THAT disgusted.
============
Reggie McKenzie:
As I stated, I don’t believe that Mark Davis is ready to fire Reggie McKenzie. In conjunction with that I don’t believe (at this point) that Reggie McKenzie is ready to fire Dennis Allen. Feel how you want about Hue Jackson, and his tenure as head coach; The facts are that the team scored more points, gave up fewer points, and won more games under Hue Jackson as a rookie head coach then they have under Dennis Allen. Let’s also remember that Dennis Allen had the benefit of a full off season, training camp, and pre season to implement his system; Hue Jackson had to deal with a lock out.
Reggie McKenzie made it clear (to everyone) that it was his decision to fire Hue Jackson. It was his (Reggie McKenzie) decision to hire Dennis Allen, and allow him (Allen) to hire his own coaching staff (which currently includes Greg Knapp). If Reggie McKenzie were to fire Dennis Allen right now it would probably make him look like a fool; For having hired Dennis Allen as head coach is the first place.
For that reason alone (as far as I’m concerned) McKenzie will have Allen back, at least for one more season. McKenzie may appear to be the fool, if he fires Allen after one dismal season; He would however look shall we say – slightly more attractive – if he were to fire Allen after two.
McKenzie needs to focus on proving he is what we think he is (and need him to be). A man who can recognize, and find talent; Not just NFL talent, I’m talking about players who can thrive wearing the silver and black of our beloved Raiders!
Losing record, or not playing for the Oakland Raiders is not like playing for, let’s say — the Arizona Cardinals (just to pick a team out of the air). The Raiders need to have certain types of players in certain positions. Reggie McKenzie should understand this; Now he needs to prove, not only that he understands, but that he can (and will) get the job done.
I don’t want to hear about draft picks and cap space. You want a “reason” for being held back?!? Try slavery. Now that’s a – reason. No high draft picks, and cap space restraints are nothing more than excuses for losing. The truly talented general managers thrive under any circumstances. A general manager with half a brain should be able to build a team, if they have a fist full of draft picks in one hand and a fist full of cash in the other. I need McKenzie to prove that he’s above average. This draft class should give Raider Nation a good indication whether or not Reggie can recognize the not so obvious diamonds that are in every draft class, and restore our Raiders.
Again, what are we? The Arizona Cardinals?!? (not picking on the red birds) We don’t think “inside the box.” We know that – there is no box (borrowing a bit from The Matrix).
I’m expecting, despite the draft and salary situation for McKenzie to be able to find a few “Raiders” to add to Oakland’s roster. Reggie McKenzie (I believe) has the opportunity to make a statement as General Manager of the Raiders. However, in order for that to happen there are certain things he must do, and he must avoid.
Beginning with the later, McKenzie must avoid being linked to losing. If Allen is unable to correct his own ship McKenzie will have no choice but to sink it; Or watch his own ship sink right along with that of Allen.
The next pitfall McKenzie must avoid is a two headed beast. One head is the dreaded Draft Day Mistake (see Robert Gallery for reference). The other head belongs to the Expensive Free Agent Bust (I know that we have some questions at quarterback but the last thing we need is to bring in a Mark Sanchez).
McKenzie has pretty much gutted the Raider roster. Before the season began he had to have changed at least 26 out of the 53 players the Raiders had on the roster. However, that roster change has not produced positive results on the field of play. This will be the Raider first losing season since 2009.
It’s going to be important for him to not develop a foundation based upon losing. He’s going to need to draft well, and find the proper free agents to play Raider Football.
I would look for McKenzie to continue to draft defense; You could see a Jarvis Jones, defensive end for Georgia join the Raiders roster (we do need someone to rush, and sack the quarterback). You could also see Manti Te’o the linebacker from Norte Dame (The Raiders do need leadership at this position). Also don’t be surprised if Kyle Long, son of Raider legend Howie Long joins the team. Kyle is not a defensive player, however he is an offensive lineman (another area the Raiders could use an upgrade at), and he is a legacy player (We didn’t have a change to draft Jake Long — so don’t be surprised if we pick up Kyle).
============
Dennis Allen:
In my opinion 2013 needs to be: The Year Of Dennis Allen. It goes without saying that I’ll be watching to see the new McKenzie acquisitions; Remember McKenzie has entirely rebuilt the Raiders professional and college scouting teams. However, Allen’s job is to – as we say: coach em’ up! The first thing that I need confirmed is that Dennis Allen knows defense. As you’re reading my words our defense is ranked no better than 21st against the run and 27th against the pass. Moreover, the Raiders defense has played games in which they’ve allowed their opponent to score 42, 55, and 38 points!!
I’m aware of the fact that our defensive line acts as though their allergic to quarterbacks. We have questions at line backer. We have cover corners, minus the cover, and un-safe safeties. However, as I stated Dennis Allen’s job is to coach em’ up!! The first word that comes to mind, pertaining to what I’ve seen of the Raiders game plans this season from week to week is: SUSPECT.
Allen’s in game, and half time adjustment are virtually nonexistent, and the adjustments that have been made, for the most part have been unsuccessful; See the “long snapper game” if you have any questions. Too often this season the Raiders have looked not only over matched but unprepared, and that unprepared part has to do with the coaching.
Speaking of coaching, Reggie McKenzie gave Dennis Allen the power to assemble his own staff. What that means is that Dennis Allen, not Reggie McKenzie is to blame for Raider Nation being forced to suffer through Greg Knapp part II. Comparing the 2012 Raiders offensive production with that of the 2013 team is like comparing Jessica Alba to a hobbit; In other words: There is no comparison. Furthermore, let’s not forget that it was Dennis Allen’s idea to hire Jason Tarver to run the defense (instead of doing it himself).
As I stated, when discussing the General Manager it doesn’t really take talent to coach a team filled with pro bowl type players; After all there are gentlemen like Barry Switzer walking around with Super Bowl rings on their fingers — that really belong to someone else (Raider Nation’s John Gruden is another one of these gentlemen). Conversely we’ve all seen teams bring in a head coach and that gentleman, just by his presence and game planning boost the teams win total!! Dennis Allen needs to prove that he’s that type of head coach.
2013, I need to see Dennis Allen run this team and show Raider Nation that he has some real passion!! I’m also expecting Allen to make some changes to his coaching staff. Specifically, I can’t see him bringing back Greg Knapp as Raider offensive coordinator. The question is will he bring in someone with former head coaching experience? (might be a challenge to his authority?) This would probably be in the best interest of the Raiders, but I’m not too sure if Allen is going to be willing to hire someone McKenzie could use as his replacement.

——————————————
That will be one of the big problems keeping DA around. I don’t think he has the confidence to bring in a OC or DC that have head coaching experience or could be considered a HC in the near future. Because of this we have to either grab some experienced POS who has proved not to work (Knapp) or a shot in the dark young coordinator with 0 NFL coordinating experience (Tarver).

I wouldn’t doubt it. Reggie seems to be that type of guy who strategically lines up his excuses to save face.
December 22nd, 2012 at 10:57 pm
Al Davis — better to be right than consistent.
Reggie might want to ponder on those words and grow a pair…re: coaching staff changes, recognizing mistakes one has made oneself, and fixing them, instead of worrying more about one’s profile.
Remember, Reggie must know that his OWN job security is in jeopardy if he continues to lose, which bad coaching hires will do. Surely he’s not that stupid to not realize he cannot marry himself to “year one” coaches just to show a face of continuity, if he truly thinks they’re regressing the team and are constantly out-coached and out-prepared by 90% of the opposition.

What if the Raiders finish the year with wins at Carolina and San Diego?
Raiders finish 6-10… only 2 games off the pace of last year’s 8-8 team while installing new front office, new coaching staff, new schemes on offense and defense, turning over half the roster, and a harder schedule.
============================================
***CORRECTION***
Harder schedule?
2012 opposing teams winning percentage -> .455
2011 opposing teams winning percentage -> .504
2012 opposing teams at or above .500 -> 6
2011 opposing teams at or above .500 -> 10
FALSE

Part of the argument is assuming we are gonna finish 6-10.
THAT is a pretty big assumption. The three game winning streak IF it comes would have come against 3 LOSING teams whichever way u slice it.
IF …we were to win these next two it would be something to hang your hat on imo, but we’re 8.5 pt. underdogs this week and sure to be underdogs at SD as well, so this 6-10 is far from being a done deal.
December 22nd, 2012 at 11:20 pm
It’s incredibly disconcerting that Allen/Knapp tried so hard to gloat about the Chiefs win. The Chiefs were tanking for a higher pick. Only ran Charles 10 times. Didn’t try to win, could’ve kicked 3 FGs themselves.
Lucky against Jags — officials awarded us a dodgy DPI. Without it, we lose that game.
Our first Chiefs win was legit, but we’re talking about the worst team in the NFL.
Fluked a win against a Steelers team missing key players.
That’s the extent of it.
Every game we’ve had someone put up career stats against us.
If Reggie were for real, he’d fire Allen and hire Gruden himself.
December 22nd, 2012 at 11:22 pm

GG,
I see what you’re syaing, but for me personally i’m not gonna discount any wins from this yr. since i’ve been sticking up for all the wins from last yr. in response to guys saying “it wasn’t real” or it was “a mirage” so in fairness i’m fine with giving the DA fans their wins and going with the “you are what your record says you are” stance.
4-10 is bad enough. Lol.
December 22nd, 2012 at 11:36 pm
I have been teetering on the DA issue. Part of me wants to see some continuity at HC as firing our HC every yr. has been a source and sign of dysfunction and embarrassment for Raider fans; which is why I didn’t even want Cable fired..and then Hue after that, but what’s worse. Going more seasons at 3-13 4-12 or 5-11, or keep doing it till we get it right?
It’s a conundrum.
I’m not at all pleased with what we did this season that’s for sure.
December 22nd, 2012 at 11:37 pm

That’s also a good argument. Good approach to winning the debate.
#542 also happens to be a good argument, a good approach to winning the debate
Ie, either way you look at it, there’s no way anyone can defend Allen and his record. Whatsoever.
December 22nd, 2012 at 11:42 pm
545,
Absolutely not. I agree. I’d rather hear “Yes, this looks bad and there’s not much we can say to defend DA for this horrible season, but i think he should have another yr. because i think he’ll learn from his mistakes and we’ll get better”.
It’s much more palatable than trying to sell this disaster of a season as BETTER than the previous 2 seasons, or that DA has really improved the team despite the record.
December 22nd, 2012 at 11:53 pm
#546
Exactly. That’s what’s troubling. That’s exactly the heart of the matter. Not just Allen/Knapp/Reggie supporters deflecting the reality, deflecting blame from themselves. But Reggie/Allen/Knapp have been doing that too…blaming players, blaming previous regime, blaming other coaching elements inside the organization. And trying to pull the wool over astute fans and shill beat writers, by suggesting that they weren’t trying to win and make playoffs, or they didn’t really believe they would win and make playoffs.
Which is hogwash. If you look at Reggie’s transactions, and Allen’s hires and starting personnel (and who hasnt been played)…they’ve been trying to field the best team, been trying to win, restructuring contracts to retain certain vet players, etc.
This 4-12 season, with a lot of broken franchise records for patheticness, was this regime GENUINELY trying to win now lol.
