Raiders notes vs. Panthers

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, December 23rd, 2012 at 5:12 pm in Oakland Raiders.

On Carolina’s first touchdown, a 23-yard pass from Cam Newton to Steve Smith, left tackle Byron Bell appeared to be holding Raiders defensive end Lamarr Houston.

No flag was thrown.

Much later, when Darren McFadden ran into the end zone from 3 yards out, Stefen Wisniewski was called for holding against a Carolina interior defender, erasing the touchdown.

“I kind of got tripped up,’’ Wisniewski said. “I gave ‘em kind of a final tug before he was going to get off the block. Sometimes they call that; sometimes they don’t. I have to see it on tape to know for sure. But it really stinks when it’s on a touchdown. It really hurts.’’

The two plays helped determine the final outcome in a 17-6 win by the Panthers, but there were head-scratchers galore from the officiating crew on both sides.

On third-and-10 from the Carolina 20-yard line, Tommy Kelly contributed on an apparent sack of Cam Newton. Newton kicked Kelly as they untangled, with Kelly getting a retaliatory foul for unnecessary roughness and a Panthers first down.

“He kicked me and and I aint’ fixing to take that off nobody,’’ Kelly said. “What are you going to do when someone kicks you? You going to take it? Nah.’’

Coach Dennis Allen, although he said he wasn’t exactly sure what happened on the play, wasn’t so sure.

“We’re trying to change the cultre and whatwe have to understand is we have to keep our composure in those types of situations because nothing good comes out of it,’’ Allen said.

Kelly conceded afterward the Raiders were going after Newton with gusto after Carson Palmer was knocked out of the game on a roughing the passer penalty from Greg Hardy, but not in an illegal sense.

“You take our guy out, we’re going to take your guy out,’’ Kelly said.“We’re not out to hurt someone, but when that happens . . .’’

Later in the same drive, Miles Burris appeared to deliver a clean hit to break up a pass to tight end Greg Olson. He got called for hitting a defenseless receiver, just as Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly did against Darrius Heyward-Bey.

“I’m not the one who makes the calls here,’’ Burris said. “I thought it was pretty clean and I’m going to go out there and continue to play football as hard as I can,’’ Burris said.

Carolina coach Ron Rivera and Allen were both venting their frustrations with officials.

“They have to do the best job they can to protect the players and that’s really where we are right now.’’

Newton was called for unsportsmanlike conduct after making contact with an official after being ridden to the ground by Mike Mitchell, but was not ejected.

Referee Joe Boger told a pool reporter he “missspoke’’ when saying over the loudspeaker that Newton was being penalized for contact. He said Newton was instead penalized for “disrespectfully addressing an official’’ and that the contact “was not of a malicious nature.’’

Newton issued a public apology after the game.

– Palmer’s injury was sustained on a third-and-1 play while rolling to his right to pass. Subsequent third-and-1 plays resulted in a 4-yard loss on a pitch to Darren McFadden and a 2-yard loss on a swing pass from Matt Leinart to Marcel Reece.

Asked if he would have liked to have seen a more straight-ahead approach in short-yardage, Allen said, “ I would like to see us get the first down and that’s what we’ve got to do better at. Up until last week, we were one of the leading teams on third-and-1 . . . we got stopped a couple of times and we’ve got to do better there.’’

– The Raiders longest offensive play of the day was a 22-yard reception by Terrelle Pryor, who took shotgun snap from center, threw wide to Carson Palmer and then caught a return throw on a screen.

– Punter Shane Lechler pinned the Panthers inside the 20-yard line four times.

– A bit of trickery on a punt reverse from Phillip Adams to Mike Mitchell went for just two yards.

– Strong safety Tyvon Branch (foot) and Adams (groin) did not finish the game with injuries.

– Defensive end Dave Tollefson was inactive for the first time this season, with rookie Jack Crawford getting spot duty on the defensive line.

Wiz, Veldheer, and the rookie from A&M as the YOUNG core of our Oline is just as exciting to me as that Dline, John.

Can we really lose either way?

Even if we “lose out” on Star and the LT, Werner and Moore are ballers too.
    ————————————–
This we can agree on. I think with where we stand, we are in position to get ONE of any really amazing prospects. If everything goes smoothly, we should definitely walk away from the 1st round with a big time player, be it Star, Jones, Werner, Moore, Joeckel. Even Teo, who I think would be a little of a reach for us, would still be a nice player to “end up with”. Barkevious Mingo. Actually, this is one of the deepest defensive drafts Ive seen in a minute. This so-called new and improved scouting department is gonna be out to the test this draft, and Im excited to see what happens.

Worst case scenario, Reggie trades down, we DON’T end up with one of the top tier prospects, and he blows whatever 1st round pick he has. This would be unforgivable. Reggie has been off to a bad start. This draft will be a chance for him to redeem himself. Let’s GO!

    That

    ^^^^^^^^
No drafting a LT with that top 4 pick!

It comes down to Te’o, Moore, Star or Werner.

There obviously people in here with short memories. Last year’s O-line had it’s problem, especially on the right side. Satele & Carlisle were a turnstile. ORT tackle was barely serviceable. We really needed a new center, ORG & ORT. Satele was no prize at center. He really was a weak link. As it stand right now we still need a center, ORG & ORT. Move Wiz 2.0 back to OLG and let’s bring in so FA’s. Carlisle can play back-up or just retire. Brisel is simply a wasted signing & Barnes is Barnes. Enough said. We also need to get rid of Knapp’s buddy Pollard and ring Bob Whylie back, maybe Wiz 1.0 too if he’s willing.

    ^^^^^^^^
We still had a better system and nice continuity though and we had a nice RUNNING GAME!

All of that went down the toilet this year!

  • Kirk

The Raiders longest play of the game was a misdirection.

So they never ran another one.

  • Kirk

    Pryor is our best quarterback.

Reece is our best running back.

    So we don’t play them.

  • Duffman

I am tired of these coaches thinking that execution is the reason for losing or not getting a first down. 1. Coach to your talent’s strengths – McFadden is a power runner not a cut and run zone block type. You do not need a great runner for zone blocking. 2. The Defense, although playing better, is still horrible. 3. The coaches do not use explosive young talent i.e. Jones and Ausberry. 4. Move Wisenewski back to guard and Parsons to Center. Power Left like last year. 5. Allen, you must not allow the refs to continue to walk all over you.. the cinci game they did it, and in Carolina they did it. Go out confront them and continue to confront the league until you get change, yes you will be fined and suspended but as Mr. King said you must fight unjust laws– I am also tired of hearing how the GM and the coaches are turning things around, What ? They have better players on offense this year and they have a losing record– A real coach would have had this team in the playoffs — They all should be fired!!!! Pay whatever Gruden wants – he would have had this team in the playoffs.

My comments on a portion of:

    *****************************
“Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp had to adjust quickly when Carson Palmer was knocked out of the game”. Why? We were told that the reason Leinart was picked as backup QB was the fact that he knew this offense so well due to his time at the Texans where Knapp was an assistant. Could it be that the real weak link is Knapp? Obviously, he’s the one who doesn’t know how to run an offense. How much longer do we have to tolerate his incompetence? He says “be patient”. I say “screw you”. “Patience my ass”. It seems as though the major part of the free world understands that Knapp IS the main problem. His scheme sucks and so does he. He couldn’t call a good game to save his Ass. Some people are just not cut out to play football and he’s our Tebow. Hopefully, Dennis Allen will wake up and get rid of this weak link. He’s singlehandedly destroyed what was once a half way decent offense. We the fans, will no longer tolerate his association with the Raiders. I personally will show my dissatisfaction with Knapp’s scheme & involvement by NOT renewing my season tickets. That’s the least I can do to protest Knapp. He wasn’t worth a damn when he was here before. His return has caused that much more regression. He MUST be released – a polite way of saying FIRED!

    =====

I respectfully disagree with some of this.

Satele actually started looking really solid by the second half of last season. I commented on that fact here and many agreed. In hindsight, it’s easier to remember his poor start as representing his whole season. If I recall, he was injured through a lot of preseason and then seemed to be slow picking up the center reads and audibles, and that looked like it impacted his blocking. Once he got more comfortable on the calls it looked like he was able to focus more on his own assignements. Of course his success in Indy now shows that he doesn’t have a talent problem.

Carlisle I agree was horrid i nthe power blocking scheme. He is to powerful guards as Leinart is to strong armed quarterbacks. While he’s no world beater, he looks less exposed back in the ZBS on this year’s team, where he’s not getting visibly beat several times a game.

Briesel hasn’t been as bad in my eyes as most make him out here. He defintely hasn’t been good either, but for the most part just not very visible. I think part of his value that we don’t see was helping the team adapt to the scheme. And let’s not forget the handicap that he has: he’s sandwiched between a center that is playing out of position and having to learn the system and a RT that is the weakest player on the line. It’s hard to not look bad in that situation!

I agree that Barnes is just Barnes. On the other hand, Smith sure makes Barnes look better! If anything, Barnes seems more comfortable in the new scheme and has had way fewer false starts and holding calls against him.

In the end, I don’t think this is a horrible line and is bordering on decency. The sacks are very low considering how often the team passes. The running game has sucked, but really only when DMac is behind the line. Every other RB on the roster has looked better with their carries, but DMac gets such a high percentage it makes it hard to fairly judge the line play.

Then it started getting parroted here, there and everywhere until it was commonly accepted as truth. Problem was, there was no truth to it. He played as well as he was capable of as #1, #2, off the bench, starting or with Bruce or Frye as back up.
Same thing with this “Al Davis players” BS. When I see Veld, Wiz, DMC, Bryant, Houston and the like get benched in favor of ‘Reggies guys’ I’ll consider it. Until then, think for yourself, don’t be a parrot, and try to come up with a legitamite reason your favorite player isn’t seeing significant playing time.
I’ll get off the soapbox now. Merry Xmas!

Though I believe the Oline is the heart of the team, I believe our fastest road to repectability is to build the Dline in 2013.

Our first pick as a DT is long over due and gets a bit of mileage out of Kelly’s remaining contract since the new guy will hopefully require some double teams.
A stud DE in round three would be great if we get lucky.
Keep Carter for depth at a modest price and we may have something.
This strategy is all predicated on Bergstrom repalcing Carlisle and that again is not gauranteed.

This is and has been my concern for quite a while too many holes and two few high picks for the first two years of this regime.

Raider O points out that the Giants/Steelers have built their Oline with low round picks.

The Giants drafted 8 “in the box” type players with first or second round picks during the past decade.
What is misleading is when you go back a bit further you find:
    STRAHAN #1
    PETITGOUT #1
    GRAGG #2
The Giants had the good fortune of getting unusual longevity out of VERY HIGH DRAFT PICKS. AS A RESULT THEY HAD A CORE THAT ALLOWED THEM TO FOCUS ON SKILL GUYS WITH HIGH PICKS BECAUSE THEY HAD BUILT THE CORE OF THEIR LINES IN THE LATE 90’S.
The Steelers drafted 12 “in the box” type players with first or second round picks during the last decade.
BY CONTRAST THE RAIDERS DRAFTED 7 IN THE BOX TYPE PLAYERS WITH HIGH ROUND PICKS. THEY ALSO TRADED AWAY THREE OF THEIR 20 HIGH ROUND PICKS DURING THAT TIME. MOST WERE ALL AVERAGE TO POOR PICKS. BRAYTON,HOWARD,GALLERY,GROVE,McCLAIN. WE CAN BE GENEROUS AND SAY THAT HOUSTON AND WIZ II WERE SUCCESSFUL.
THE MORAL OF THE STORY IS THAT SUCCESSFUL WINNING FRANCHISES BUILD THE CORE OF THEIR LINES WITH FIRST AND SECOND ROUND PICKS. IF THEY MISS THEY KEEP DOING IT TILL THEY GET IT RIGHT.
THAT IS WHAT THE RAIDERS USED TO DO AND THEY GOT AWAY FROM IT FOR THE LAST DECADE.

    ^^^^^^^^^^
Build the DLine, LB’s and secondary.

Get a better coaching staff as well, that knows how to be a head coach and utlize players strengths.

More and more it appears that what may be the quickest road to respectability is a true franchise..potentially (if not already) ELITE QB AND receivers who are on the same page and can catch the ball. These receivers don’t have to be big names, but need to CATCH THE BALL. Too often we blow it off when DHB drop a clutch 3rd down, or Streator drops one, or Myers…or Moore as if “We’ll get em next time..overall he’s doing good”, but those key drops end drives that could turn a game around.

Guys say “well, overall DHB hasn’t dropped as many as he used to…he’s ok”, but that 3rd down play in Cincy would have kept the drive going and if we score there it could have been a different result.

My point is, those drops we tend to shrug off as “part of the game” are CRITICAL.

It is RARE that u see any GB receivers drop the ball. It just doesn’t happen, and if it does it’s more of a fluke than anything.

How many have we seen DMoore drop this yr.? Myers? Shoot Myers dropped a critical TD that doinked off and was picked and he is in the top 15 of most drops in the league. You just cannot have that stuff.
