Grading the Raiders off Panthers game

By Steve Corkran
Monday, December 24th, 2012 at 11:19 am in Oakland Raiders.

Beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders off their 17-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Here are McDonald’s grades and comments:

Pass offense

Downfield passing was non-existent as Matt Leinart needed 16 completions (in 32 attempts) to gain 115 yards with no gain longer than 20. Terrelle Pryor’s 22-yard reception from Carson Palmer on a trick play screen was the longest pass play of the game. Leinart’s interception to Luke Kuechly near the end of the first half led to Carolina’s second touchdown.

Grade: D-minus

Rush offense

So much for the Raiders’ resurgent run game. A recent run of average to above-average performances gave way to 47 yards on 22 carries. Running back Darren McFadden (33 yards, 17 carries) had one 13-yard gain and the lone rushing first down. Other than that, he was running head-on into tackles, gaining 20 yards on 16 caries.

Grade: F

Pass defense

Even with starters Tyvon Branch (foot) and Phillip Adams (groin) out, the Raiders held Cam Newton reasonably in check. He was 18-for-29 for 170 yards, and grew frustrated by getting hit by a decent pass rush. Linebacker Miles Burris had an interception off a Philip Wheeler deflection. The Raiders offense failed to cash in with points.

Grade: B

Rush defense

The Raiders were diligent at staying disciplined in the read option with regard to the quarterback run or the pitch. Newton had 60 yards on 12 carries (including three kneel downs) but the bulk of his yardage came on one 29-yard scramble. DeAngelo Williams, other than 14 yards on one option pitch, had 5 yards on 10 carries.
Grade: B

Special teams

Shane Lechler pinned the Panthers inside the 20-yard line four times. Chimdi Chekwa forced a fumble on a punt return, recovered by Richard Gordon, but the offense could not convert into a touchdown. An “A” effort other than doing no damage in the return game. The Raiders’ coverage units didn’t allow Carolina to do any damage with their returns, however.

Grade: B-plus

Coaching

Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp had to adjust quickly when Carson Palmer was knocked out of the game. Whatever adjustments were made failed. Coach Dennis Allen opted to go for a first down on fourth-and-4 deep in Carolina territory with 5:09 to go, treating it as a one-score game even though his kicker is Sebastian Janikowski. Leinart threw incomplete. Defensive plan and execution was solid.

Grade: D-plus

I’m very upset at the D+ Grade for coaching.

  • Purvisman/Intrepid// Full Disclosure

Jason Campbell couldn’t play QB looking over his shoulder at the Bruce. Or so someone said once. Then it started getting parroted here, there and everywhere until it was commonly accepted as truth. Problem was, there was no truth to it. He played as well as he was capable of as #1, #2, off the bench, starting or with Bruce or Frye as back up.
Same thing with this “Al Davis players” BS. When I see Veld, Wiz, DMC, Bryant, Houston and the like get benched in favor of ‘Reggies guys’ I’ll consider it. Until then, think for yourself, don’t be a parrot, and try to come up with a legitamite reason your favorite player isn’t seeing significant playing time.
I’ll get off the soapbox now. Merry Xmas!

Leinart becoming starter in 2013 would probably be good, as he wouldnt last very long — either due to terrible play or injury.

Especially if Pryor returns to challenge for the gig.

Palmer isn’t worth bringing back financially-wise. And if we can get a 1st or 2nd for him probably for the best as we have many holes to fill.

Does anyone at all still like Allen, or willing to give him a 2nd year, or thinks he will turn into a good HC?

Let’s ask ourselves one thing. Is this guy going to lead us to a Super Bowl, yes or no?

Do we actually need another season to determine whether Dennis Allen is capable of bringing a team to the Super Bowl?

Let’s just think about that one for a second.

  • The_Judge37

Who cares if Pryor isn’t ready to be a QB, just get him some experience at this point. Playing him in the final game by no way means you’re opening the QB competition. Just play the dude.

Is there any actual proof that there is really such thing as a DA supporter? Are we sure that this is not something that only exists on the internet? Ive never met one. Never talked to one. Only a few random “identities” on this blog, with arguments so weak that they couldnt truly believe what theyre saying.

Jerry is still being extremely generous with the grading. Its not hard to tell that the writers “like” this staff as “people”, and are enjoying the “buddy-buddyness” of things. Im sure they are fine human beings. But that doesnt mean that theyre worth a damn when it comes to football and coaching.

Just stopped in to wish the Raider Nation a Merry Christmas. All I want is Gruden and a new coaching staff. Not a lot to ask Santa for is it?

  • The_Judge37

The only good Allen has done all year is Humiliate Rolando McClain, but Guards and Running Backs did that weekly so….

  • 89706Raider

#7 – Yeah, I think Allen deserves another year.
He’s young and he’s made mistakes.
However, by the opinion of most who have been around him, he is smart and will learn.
Possibly his biggest fault so far is being very conservative.
    The guy has positives.
I know this flies in the face of those on this blog who expected a Super Bowl this year on the basis of two 8-8 years.
For those more realistic, the coaching carousel of the past 10 years hasn’t worked, so give this one another year to work out the kinks.

Any positive so far that YOU’VE seen for yourself? No coach is going to come out to bash him publicly, so any vote of confidence from his peers is meaningless.

  • CDERaider

Coaching F – minus. For playing mind games with Pryor and breaking his spirit. TP deserves a chance to play an entire game – he’s worked hard enough for that chance. The only thing DA has to fear is that the kid will do well and further prove that he doesn’t know what hell he is doing.

Yep. Its sad that this is a real dynamic, but whatever, thats how business works. Corkran, who’s work I appreciate, has been completely different in how he covers Dennis Allen compared to how he covered Hue. A lot less bias. I understand that Jackson may have rubbed him the wrong way, but this is journalism for football. Not a popularity contest. Local media has been as soft on this staff as I have actually ever seen. Kinda weird when you look at it on a personal level. Jerry and Steve have both been guilty of NOT calling it like they see it this year. Monte has been a lot more honest about things.

I for one was a supporter of Cable and Hue.
I did not want to see more change.

Many of you wanted (You know who you are); up to date schemes, more blitzing, coaches with RECENT success at other NFL jobs.

You got that with this staff. These are educated professionals far different than the likes of RR and Cable.

Simply because the result is not what you wanted does not mean we can not succeed with this group.

Some of you have chosen to dismiss my “legendary” coaches list of men who struggled mightily in their first few seasons as head coaches of struggling franchises. The point has been and continues to be that no coach or regime will be successful without GOOD TALENT RELATIVE TO NFL STANDARDS!!!
Talent is 80% and coaching is 20% of the equation.
I have selected a more recent list that may intrigue the more insightful on this blog and continues to prove the point.

Pete Carroll 7-9 First season 14-18 first TWO seasons
Mike Shanahan 6-10 First season 11-21 first TWO seasons (in Washington)
Belichick 36-44 in Cleveland 5-11 first season 16-16 first TWO seasons (in NE)

Reid 5-11 First season 16-16 first two seasons

None of these coaches faced the challenges we have in Oakland. Missing 3 of your top four picks in your first two drafts slows the building process a bit. So does being $20 million over the cap when you take the job.

Ask Dennis Allen about the brain-fart he had when he decided to go for it on 4th and 4, with 5:30 to go and all 3 timeouts, instead of kicking the FG.

Ask him what he thought about the 3 consecutive screen plays that were called, and why he thought that was going to work.
