Grading the Raiders off Panthers game

Beat writer Jerry McDonald graded the Raiders off their 17-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers. Here are McDonald’s grades and comments:

Pass offense

Downfield passing was non-existent as Matt Leinart needed 16 completions (in 32 attempts) to gain 115 yards with no gain longer than 20. Terrelle Pryor’s 22-yard reception from Carson Palmer on a trick play screen was the longest pass play of the game. Leinart’s interception to Luke Kuechly near the end of the first half led to Carolina’s second touchdown.

Grade: D-minus

Rush offense

So much for the Raiders’ resurgent run game. A recent run of average to above-average performances gave way to 47 yards on 22 carries. Running back Darren McFadden (33 yards, 17 carries) had one 13-yard gain and the lone rushing first down. Other than that, he was running head-on into tackles, gaining 20 yards on 16 caries.

Grade: F

Pass defense

Even with starters Tyvon Branch (foot) and Phillip Adams (groin) out, the Raiders held Cam Newton reasonably in check. He was 18-for-29 for 170 yards, and grew frustrated by getting hit by a decent pass rush. Linebacker Miles Burris had an interception off a Philip Wheeler deflection. The Raiders offense failed to cash in with points.

Grade: B

Rush defense

The Raiders were diligent at staying disciplined in the read option with regard to the quarterback run or the pitch. Newton had 60 yards on 12 carries (including three kneel downs) but the bulk of his yardage came on one 29-yard scramble. DeAngelo Williams, other than 14 yards on one option pitch, had 5 yards on 10 carries.
Grade: B

Special teams

Shane Lechler pinned the Panthers inside the 20-yard line four times. Chimdi Chekwa forced a fumble on a punt return, recovered by Richard Gordon, but the offense could not convert into a touchdown. An “A” effort other than doing no damage in the return game. The Raiders’ coverage units didn’t allow Carolina to do any damage with their returns, however.

Grade: B-plus

Coaching

Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp had to adjust quickly when Carson Palmer was knocked out of the game. Whatever adjustments were made failed. Coach Dennis Allen opted to go for a first down on fourth-and-4 deep in Carolina territory with 5:09 to go, treating it as a one-score game even though his kicker is Sebastian Janikowski. Leinart threw incomplete. Defensive plan and execution was solid.

Grade: D-plus

Seems many were right about Pryor.
The coaches see it. The voice of the Raiders, Greg Papa sees it.

Some of you fools keep whining about how good Pryor is, how he’s ready, how he should be starting.

He’s not playing for one simple reason, he’s just not ready. And might never be.

The point I keep trying to make is that coaching “success” or progress has far more to do with on the field talent as opposed to scheme, motivation or in game adjustments and play calls.
    ——-

My point is there has been no success or progress made this year. Why waste another just for the sake of continuity. I’d rather they just make a good, proven choice at HC to get us out of the losing culture while they fix the roster and cap. Then you can experiment with young coaches who can either be Mike Tomlin’s or Raheem Morris’s

Greg Papa, now on the Game: Terrell Pryor is only capable of a handful of plays. He is now not capable of a 60 plays playbook, and I don’t think he will ever be capable. Watching Pryor in practice before Carolina game, he was doing everything wrong. 3 step drops he would still drop back 5 steps. fundamentals are all wrong. Even the trick play they ran during the game I didn’t think they would even run because Pryor kept throwing it short to Palmer, bouncing the ball.
Asked what he would do with Pryor:
    Papa: “trade him.”

    ^^^^^^^^
Reason he is only capable of handful of plays is because he does not get any reps.
    —————————
    What?
He gets reps all the time. In practice. Like everyone else. Don’t confuse practice reps with game reps. If you can’t get it done during practice, you aren’t getting your shot during a game.
    Basic math.

The point I keep trying to make is that coaching “success” or progress has far more to do with on the field talent as opposed to scheme, motivation or in game adjustments and play calls.

The examples I have showed you are proven “winners” who started off poorly TILL THEY GOT BETTER TALENT.

I am not saying for a minute that DA reminds me of Gruden or Madden or Bilichick or Shanahan.

What I am saying is that our talent level is far lower than many of you care to accept. Compound that with key injuries and you have a recipe for disaster. Hue corrected his one big injury by taking away key draft picks. Do you think we would have been 8-8 with Bollar? He also had Bush to cover for Dmac. With all the cap issues we could not afford Bush. All Hue did was mortgage our future a bit more than Mr Davis did.
That is why no experinced HC would come near this place and it is why DA has a 4 year deal.
This is a 3-5 year project.

With an 8-8 team being $20 million over the cap and no first or second round picks how would we get better in one year?

    ^^^^^^^^
Old man Al was always over the cap and worked around the cap.

Like I said. Keeping Hue would have kept this team more competitive, because the offense would have not been touched except for Bush being let go realy.

Hue would have used Reece to replace Bush and keep him as more of weapon with DMC in the game.

McK and Hue could have just worked on rebuilding the defense with a better DC and work with the cap.

Instead they decidee to tear the whole damn building down and when they do that, they hire bad choice as head coach to exasperate the problem.

    Ugh….bad decisions all around.

Should have went after Del Rio.

Has roots in the East Bay Area, and grew up a Raider fan. Like Cable, he would have cared about the inter division rivalries and had this team prepared to battle division rivals at least.

Heck, if Gruden can’t be had….I would take Del Rio now to replace DA and then Del Rio can’t get Norv as his OC.

Then Del Rio can hire a legit DC also.

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

    For instance…

If it’s true what he says.

Pryor supposedly bounced the ball short of Palmer in practice.

But in a live game, he didn’t, and made a great play with ball in hand.

Nor did he throw the ball at the knees of Reece in the swing pass. Nor did he throw the ball 20 feet out the sideline.

There’s a huge difference between practice reps and live game reps.

As Reggie said….”I need to see him on the field, more than a handful of plays, to properly evaluate him.”

Reggie is either BS’ing lip-service, and Allen is his mouth-piece and right-hand man….or….Reggie wants Allen to give him Pryor for a whole half or so in week 17.

I have a feeling Reggie is in cahoots because he is invisible, asleep, and has been all 16 weeks so far. Only doing his ‘closed table’ PC when Mark’s post-saints PC FORCED Reggie to say something. And in it, all he did was BS and deflect himself.

  • Just Fire Baby

We can certainly blame many things on the this staff, but for the life of me I can not understand how someone can second-guess the going for the 4th and 4 with 5 minutes left.

At that point, it had been almost 20 drives and 115 minutes of football time since we scored a TD.

Who in their right mind would think we could get the ball back with maybe 3 minutes or so left, and drive the length of the field to score a game-winning TD?

That was our chance, right there. You have to try it, kicking a FG would have been the biggest puzzy move of the season, IMO.

Coach knew we had ZERO CHANCE of scoring a TD later in the game.

Absolutely zero chance. It was the right call with our crappy offense. Other offenses, sure you kick the FG. Maybe with Palmer in the game you kick the FG.

Leinart driving the length of the field on the road for a game-winning TD?

LMAO!!! You should punch yourself in the face for thinking that is even plausible.

I wish we had kept Cable or Hue.

The Reggie quote says it all. Our cap situation is the worst it has ever been and Hue cost us critical picks though I understand why it was done.

    Reggie
“Guys, I mean what happened this offseason, I don’t wish that on anybody, maybe the other teams in our division. That was a struggle, especially coming in here as a rookie GM. I remember talking to Ted Thompson. His rookie year he was able to get Charles Woodson. I would have liked to have done that. I talked to guys all around the league. I didn’t realize what the situation, how difficult and what other people thought about it. When you get the job people call and say, ‘What are you going to do with that cap? You’re all what over the cap. How are you going to do that?”

The fact of the matter is that Mr Davis kept “kicking the can down the road”.

The charade had to stop after 10 years of futility.

The problem was not created overnight and it will not get fixed overnight. It is a far greater and more compex problem that simply selecting a coaching staff.

  • Just Fire Baby

TP should be getting more reps, no doubt.

But you can’t just start him and give him a bunch of drives if he isn’t earning it in practice.

What if he goes out and completely fails for the first half? Do you bench him for Leinart in the 2nd half? You let him pull a Jamarcus in the ATL game and go 3 quarters without a first down?

As bad as Leinart was, it could be worse. We have seen worse, and worse usually is do to inexperience.

More series and reps sprinkled in, and if there is success you build on it.

Although, I think this staff doesn’t want to be bothered with developing some other GM’s project, which is par for the course in all of the NFL.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

If Im reggie Mckenzie I go to Pryor and tell his candy azz to learn 3-5 basic WR routes. USE HIS ATHLETICISM. Make hims a RZ Target. This kid led his highschool to State football and basketball championships.

6ft5 240 pounds that can run a 4.3 and u want to trade him? No way. Go back and look at some film in college.. he Had a few Catches and one for a TD in a bowl game vs texas. He just out jumped the defender and “Mossed” him. B4 u trade him Lets see what you can get out of him. He is a number 3rd qb.

Believe me.. if he is cut or traded another team will entually tell the kid u have to switch posistions if u want to get on the field.. and he will shine for them. Watch. 23 yrs old

Leinart proved all his naysayers right yesterday. He is every bit the loser people make him out to be. Need to get rid of his worthless @$$ and trade for either Flynn or Cousins and start a real QB competition with CP3 in the offseason.

Perhaps the punch in the face should be saved for you. It might do your brain some good.

Hey I know we haven’t scored a TD in almost two full games, so let’s kick another FG and pass on this potential 30 yard drive, BECAUSE OUR NEXT DRIVE, yup that has TD all over it, even though we wil have to go further with less time.

    LMAO

    Don’t trust this staff’s evaluations.

They’ve been trying to force players into a system. They’ve made everyone look bad pretty much.

Dmac we’ve seen proof he can be a baller. But has looked pathetic this year. If we never saw Dmac before we’d think he outright sucks.

Are we to therefore trust their evaluation/reasons for Taiwan, Pryor, Ausberry?

Taiwan they say constantly drops the ball. But last year, he had 16 carries for 73 yards and never fumbled. Nor has he this year. The fumbled end-around exchange is always blamed on the one handing-off (reece). Taiwan has fumbled just once in two years (which was the fake punt reception).

Look at Dmac’s fumble numbers in his entire time here. In the first two years he had something like 20 fumbles.

Pryor they say isn’t ready and they make it out like every time he drops back he is throwing the ball into the ground, ball slipping out of his hands, throwing ducks all the time, not taking right steps, cant command the huddle etc.

But we saw him in extended action in pre-season and he wasn’t retarded like they say. Plus he got better the more extended time he saw. We’ve also seen him in limited snaps last two weeks and he wasn’t retarded. Pryor himself says his footwork is excellent now, and that he knows the entire playbook, etc. So Pryor is informing RN that he is ready, while Papa and others are sabotaging him by being shills for Allen/Knapp who can spread all this crap about him being retarded.

While Ausberry, he’s been completely shelved as tho he is retarded. Don’t hear anyone asking coaches about why he isnt seeing action. But i bet they’ll say he isn’t ready and is dropping the ball and looking retarded. But the limited action we’ve seen him in real games, he has been dangerous and not retarded.

I DO NOT TRUST this staff. There’s an agenda for sure. I want them either fired before they release all these players. Or, that Mark hires Ray Anderson to the P of FO asap, before off-season, before Reggie/Allen can start gutting the roster.

This is actually great news, CP3 is done. D, U, N, DUN. Not worth bringing him back, trade for Flynn or Cousins maybe both.

TP should be getting more reps, no doubt.

But you can’t just start him and give him a bunch of drives if he isn’t earning it in practice.

That just it, I dont trust these coaches, and they arent even using Pryor the correct way. Do they see how Wilson, Kappy, RGIII,or Cam is used? Bring in some of that college O an give the kid a shot with it. Even Tebow did ok with it last year.
