Pro Bowl selections announced today

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, December 26th, 2012 at 10:40 am in Oakland Raiders.

The league will announce the Pro Bowl selections today at 4 p.m. PST on NFL Network. This might be one of those rare seasons when the Raiders get shutout.
Kicker Sebastian Janikowski won the fan portion of the voting for the Pro Bowl, which counts for one-third of the total. The players and coaches also get one-third of the vote.
Janikowski figures to have the best chance of being selected from the Raiders. He has converted 31 of 34 field-goal attempts this season, with his misses coming from 51, 61 and 64 yards.
Even that isn’t a sure thing, given the Browns Phil Dawson is 28 of 29 and the Ravens Justin Tucker 29 of 31 on field-goal attempts. Tucker also plays for a team that is 10-5 and headed to the playoffs.
Janikowski was selected to the Pro Bowl last season for the first time in his NFL career. He made 31 of 35 field-goal attempts in 2011, including an NFL record-tying 63-yarder against the Broncos in the regular-season opener.

u guys hate knapp, predictable , not smart etc etc , yet you guys want to see Pryor play under him? Makes no sense , save his confident for a new coordinator , I’m glad the season is almost over, I want to see who they bring in to run the offense and what type of moves they make in FA with sum money to spend and what they do in draft with 1st pick

  • RAIDERMAN99

Charlie, what’s your opinion on GK returning as OC in 2013 ?

    YEA or NAY ?

Explanations/justifications for why he was hired in the first place not necessary.

    Should Krapp return ?

Just a simple YES or NO, please.

Wait do you want the list of players who are paid to be pro-bowl type of player or the players who in years past warranted a possible pro Bowl?

    ********************************************************

DKnight posted that Allen and his staff may have caused no Raiders to be selected for the Pro Bowl this year.

I thought that was quite a stretch, and invited him to name the player or players that would have made it if not for the aforementioned coaching staff.

Sorry, I was kidding. I agree for the most part with you, but we have players who are paid contracts to play at a high level and failed.

  • MikieG

This says it all my brethren:
Darren McFadden has 8 carries for -9 yards on 3rd and 2 or less. Lost yardage 5 times, 2 first downs.
    Fire drop step Dirt Knapp.

  • DJ Johnny

We are on an incerdible streak of absolutely nothing resembling any good news or reason to be excited coming from Alameda headquarters.

Are they trying to bore us to death?

At least give us SOMETHING outside of a 4-11 record to hang our hats on.

Can’t beat the Knapp horse enough, but let’s fire John DeFilippo also.

This is the guy who’s taught Jamarcus Russell, Mark Sanchez and Terrelle Pryor everything they don’t know

  • mcfadden20.

Exactly Charlie , that’s why I see our first pick on DE , who will get to the QB and that’s why I see some interesting cornerback pickups, Adams who looks like could start for us , Ross, huff, spencer brought back for 1 year contract , underwood (who looked promising before getting IR, Chekwa , should be good enough for CB , we need a FS and back up FS

So Leinart can suck and we can’t blame every one else like we do with Palmer ? Wow ! All I can say is Greg Hardy is my hero ! I wish I could have sent him a nice Xmas gift for knocking Palmer OUT !

The only thing I could possibly see starting Leinart over Pryor is that “they believe” Pryor is so bad that his play would inhibit the evaluation of all the other young guys they plan to play.
    ———–

Like who? The only other guy they need to evaluate is Bergstrom, and Pryor can’t really affect his play

Actually you are right, maybe it is playing players Reggie wants to trade to showcase them in the final game…the rumor all the receivers are on the trading block.

  • mcfadden20.

Can’t wait till offseason though, def excited about some interesting lineups next year , Bowe/Jennings, Streater,Moore,DHB,Criner, ford looks good , Huff will be full time CB, Adams has looked nice back there , with couple if more additions , and Bette edge rushers, Moore and Jenkins , Houston’s from inside ,we should do better , better MLB, M Burris in 2nd year , Wheeler coming back will help more , we need a new starting FS and backup FS , not sure where we will get starter from

  • The_Judge37

Darrius Heward-Bodycatch is going to be untradable. The only other WR to showcase is Moore and plenty of teams would already jump all over that Blunder of personell management. Moore is our best WR and no reason to think in his 2nd year he’s unsalvageable.

  • DJ Johnny

The Oakland Raiders today angrily and vehemently denied any rumors of anything positive or anything resembling what would be considered “good news” happening at any time in the near future, and resent and categorically deny any suggestion of there being any imminent announcement of any such “news”.

The Raiders are deeply offended and insulted at any stories from the media or speculation from the fans that imply anything other than ‘business as usual’ or that the orgnaization plans on making any announcements of upgrading the roster and/or coaching staff any time in the near future.

As Coach Knapp says “Let’s try and have a little bit of perspective here for a minute ok?”

The Raiders wish to say thank you to the fans for another great season.

Haha, no worries. There are some legitimate gripes in here about the staff, but there are also a awful lot of people throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I even read in here a day or so ago that the entire staff should be fired if Pryor doesn’t start the SD game.

The team was/is in salary cap and draft choice hell and has to take a step or two backward before moving forward again. Combine that with new schemes on offense and defense and there are bound to be problems right away. Some will understand and be able to say “I told you so” in a couple of years, and others will moan and gnash their teeth and call for everyone to get fired on a daily basis. It is what it is, but until Allen gets the type of players he wants and McKenzie gets some draft picks and control of the payroll it’s not going to be ideal.

Whatever. I haven’t backed down from my support for McKenzie and Allen. I think they’ll get things turned around and it will be fun to watch Raider games again.

Coaches don’t catch, or throw, or tackle. If a player didn’t make the probowl, it’s because he wasn’t good enough. Put the blame where it belongs. DHB sucked this year. Teach

I agree. I posted earlier today about the reality of our situation.
Not a quick one year fix.

Below is a summary of how disastrous our cap situation was and what Reggie has had to deal with.
It was created over several years as we continued to draft poorly, over rate free agents and pay far above market value for very little production. The cap issues alone are a three year project. Forget about aging players that lack talent to compete at the NFL level. That is a draft problem that is a multiyear fix as well given our lack of picks.

As of March 25, 2012, The Oakland Raiders held TWO SELECTIONS in the 2012 NFL Draft (a 5th and 6th round pick), which was just about a month away. The NFL awarded the Raiders three COMPENSATORY PICKS March 26. (A 3rd round 4th round and 5th round pick).

“In 2010, Al Davis went all out for his football team in an uncapped year and spent the most money in the league at over $150 million in player salaries. That is easily the most money ever spent on a team in the history of the NFL. One thing we know for sure is that Al Davis made his own bed here and whether that is good or bad, he must lie in it. At the other end of the spectrum are the Bengals, who have only $83.5 million in commitments for 2012. The Buccaneers, Titans, Redskins, and Broncos also are under $100 million.”

“Reports are now coming out that the Raiders cap overshot is actually more like $22 million-twice the original figure. Even at the original $11 million estimation, the Raiders had a lot of work to do. With this new figure, they go from pruning and trimming to SLASH AND BURN.”

“In general manager Reggie McKenzie’s first offseason with the team, HIS HANDS WERE ESSENTIALLY TIED DUE TO A TOUGH SALARY CAP AND VERY FEW DRAFT PICKS. IN THE 2013 DRAFT, THE RAIDERS WILL HAVE MORE SELECTIONS, AS WELL AS A FIRST-ROUND PICK FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2010.”

“The Raiders (4-10) have stumbled on the field, but McKenzie, especially, is well-respected around the NFL. He took over a TALENT-POOR TEAM that was stripped of draft picks in 2012.”

“The Raiders knew they were taking a risk extending the players they did prior to the lockout.”
    Reggie:

“Guys, I mean what happened this offseason; I don’t wish that on anybody, maybe the other teams in our division. That was a struggle, especially coming in here as a rookie GM. I remember talking to Ted Thompson. His rookie year he was able to get Charles Woodson. I would have liked to have done that. I talked to guys all around the league. I didn’t realize what the situation, how difficult and what other people thought about it. When you get the job people call and say, ‘What are you going to do with that cap? You’re all what over the cap. How are you going to do that?’

Contracts Reggie inherited PRIOR to getting under the cap for 2012:
    DT Richard Seymour $14,068,000
    QB Carson Palmer $12,500,000
    LB Kamerion Wimbley $11,850,000
    CB Stanford Routt $10,785,334
    FS Michael Huff $9,828,750
    RB Darren McFadden $9,478,833
    DT Tommy Kelly $8,874,266
    WR Darrius Heyward-Bey $8,159,000
    LB Aaron Curry $5,757,500
    P Shane Lechler $4,900,000
    TE Kevin Boss $4,750,000
    DT John Henderson $4,750,000
    PK Sebastian Janikowski $4,500,000
    CB Chris Johnson $4,500,000
    LB Rolando McClain $3,640,000
    OG Cooper Carlisle $3,300,000
    FS Hiram Eugene $2,500,000
    DE Lamarr Houston $1,116,250
    SS Mike Mitchell $965,500

    News quote:
“Still, the simple truth is that Knapp was not the Raiders’ first choice. He was hired after the Raiders interviewed a couple other candidates, and even that was long after pretty much every other team in the league had their coaching staff already set.
There remains a distinct possibility that Knapp will return in 2013. Maybe for the sake of continuity, or because it’s not as simple as most fans think to “upgrade” at a coaching position.”

I liked what I have seen from D side lately, DA is def getting a lot out of his players on his side of expertise, so not sure why he shouldn’t be brought back , offense is another story, when there was nothing left to fill his coaching staff , he hired Greg knapp who he was comfortable with , he was hardly his 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice
