Raiders shut out in Pro Bowl selections

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, December 26th, 2012 at 4:13 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The NFL announced the Pro Bowl selections Wednesday afternoon, and the Raiders didn’t have any players on the AFC team.
Kicker Sebastian Janikowski and fullback Marcel Reece were picked as alternates, the Raiders said. This is the first year since 2003 that the Raiders didn’t have at least one player selected.
Last year, Janikowski, punter Shane Lechler, long-snapper Jon Condo and defensive tackle Richard Seymour represented the Raiders in the Pro Bowl.
It seemed logical that Janikowski had the best chance of making the Pro Bowl among the Raiders players. He converted 31 of 34 field-goal attempts through the first 15 games, with his misses coming from 51, 61 and 64 yards.
Also, Janikowski won the fan portion of the voting, which accounts for one-third of the process. Players and coaches also get one-third of the vote.
Last season, Janikowski converted 31 of 35 field-goal attempts, including a league record-tying 63-yarder against the Denver Broncos in the regular-season opener.
The Cleveland Browns Phil Dawson was selected as the kicker for the AFC. He has made 28 of 29 field-goal attempts so far this season. His lone miss came against the Raiders in Oakland.
Coincidentally, Dawson signd with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 1998. He signed with the Browns in 1999 and developed into one of the league’s best kickers. Janikowski joined the Raiders in 2000 as a first-round draft pick.
Lechler’s streak of consecutive Pro Bowls made ended at five.

Point I’m trying to make is that we get to see Leinhart play…wasn’t it just disgusting?…
With the unknown that Pryor is, and yes, CP# thrown INTs at crazy times, but he WAS our best option to win games this year!
    _______________

I was hoping Leinhart would turn things around and play well but after seeing him on Sunday I dont care to see him on the field again.

  • J Hill

Palmer is probably our best player.

But some of you cats acting like he can’t play any better is absolutely hilarious.

Palmer threw game end KILLER INTs this year. PERIOD!

Just like Barnes false starts, Veldheer holds, and D Less runs phucced up routes.

    EVRYONE can play better!

    Fire Knapp?

Never thought we would have to rely on Palmer’s arm to win games..

  • poprox13

yes, he can play better. Would help if he had better protection, better running game, wasnt trying to come from behind all the time, like it was said before didnt have to throw 50+ times and had receivers that could catch the ball, how many int’s came off a receivers hands?

  • Just Fire Baby

    McKenzie didn’t bring in Palmer.

Palmer threw 3 games away by himself with ridiculous INTs.

Palmer = back to the couch

We had no problem criticising davis all these years so why does Reggie and his bum picks and signings get a pass?

    ————————————————————

What do you mean by giving them a pass?

I think the OC hire ended up being one of the worst ever. Right up there with the bed and breakfast that AL DAVIS put on the field.

I’m not in to the Al Davis vs McKenzie thing. Al Davis was one of a kind. Can’t be replaced.

McKenzie has made some nice moves AND some questionable ones, imo. I like how the defense is shaping up. I like Streater, Criner, Bilikudi, Burris, Adams, Ross, and some of the other young guys McKenzie has brought in.

The ONLY problem I see is the Krapp hire.

  • DutchRaider77

Also, McFadden has incredible hands, why haven’t we seen McFadden motioned into the slot?

Either throw him the ball or use it as a decoy to run the ball with Reece.

We wouldn’t have been in either game with out him. Carson Palmer didn’t let Brandon Weeden throw for 350+ yards. Carson Palmer didnt call the Vaunted Prevent Defense vs Atlanta, He didn’t wasn’t blocking for Martin on Tampa’s back breaking runs

No Raiders in the pro bowl? SHOCKING!

Our coaching staff will probably be there….looking for jobs….

    I’ll spell it out:

because respected quality coaches wouldn’t come to Oakland under Davis, we constantly have to find random first year or failed coaches at every important spot and hope that it works out.

Reggie didnt have the luxury of bringing in a Shanahan, Fisher, or Pagano to help turn the team around. We need a few years just to wash off the stench of our former ways.

To think that our situation should be evaluated the same as everyone else is is ridiculous.

  • DutchRaider77

    @alex7

Any thoughts on potential replacements for our coordinators, i.e, current head coaches who will probably get fired?

  • Al_is_theraiders

    >>>>

Ok, this is more reasonable. Saying the interceptions cost us three games is not. Why? Because if not for Palmer we wouldn’t have been in the games in the first place!

Palmer never will be a Peyton, Rodgers, Brees, or Brady, that can carry a team on his back. I look at him more as an Eli. He can do well when the team around him is playing great. He could prolly get hot in the playoffs some day like Eli does. But he is not the guy to carry a team.

Thats why we need a real SB-quality OC, and upgrades on the line and WR quickly.

  • Dakota

Ron Rivera will probably be looking for a job next year…..I wouldn’t mind seeing Ron and Norv as our DC and OC respectively….with Tits’ permission of course.

  • J Hill

we gave up home runs right up the gut to 5 or 6 teams in a row, then Slolando gets benched, and we are suddenly able to stop trent richardson and everybody since.

    ————————————————————

55 got benched coming out of the bye week.

Wasn’t on the field for most of the Tampa game.

Wasn’t on the field for Knowshon Moreno’s record day either.

  • The Big Banana

Seabass deserves to be there, but such is life when you play for such a sorry ass team.

Should just trade McFadden, Palmer, and Seabass while Reggie works on his 10 year rebuild.

Atlanta is the only elite team in the NFC south.
    —————
We had Atlanta beat until our elite OC couldnt realize all he had to do was run the f-ing clock out… Whats he do? Throws on just about every f-ing down!! Run the ball, run the clock out and win.. Instead, ol Krapp has to pass, pass, pass and when Palmer is put into those situations with the game on the line, what happens? Either an INT or we’re punting! The Atlanta loss was a cluster f@ck that can be blamed on Knapp and Palmer…

    Yes Judge

you are lost if you don’t realize it’s taken more than a year for quality veteran coaches to put Oakland as a possible work place.

Also, remember these guys were hired 10 months ago.

  • Dakota

Palmer is not the problem….he is not perfect, but he is still the best Qb we have had here since Gannon, and the second best since the 1980s.

He is no longer a great QB, I think that ended the day he was hit low in the playoffs, but he can still win for us. He just needs a run game, good protection from the o-line, and WRs who don’t let the ball bounce off of them so much. He also needs a defense that will not turn every one of his turnovers into TDs.

I think much of that can be corrected with coaching changes. Add 1 legit WR, keep the young WRs we already have, add a young RB with some size, keep McFadden, move Wiz back to guard and get a center.

New OC, o-line coach and some roster tweaks and this offense can win.

On the defensive side of the ball…..we need everything. Pointing out a shutout against a pathetic KC and a decent game against a Panther’s team that is about to fire its coach is just fools gold. This defense is pathetic, and needs new players and a new coordinator.

  • Raider-in-PA

I love the stat thrown up that Palmer is the fastest QB to get the ball out… BFD!! What does that tell you? His oline is porous!! Also, so what if you get it out quickly? If it isnt a good throw, who gives a f@ck?? That is a bogus stat..

For Palmer to be middle of the pack(ranked 16th I think in QB rating) with the sorry sacks around him and a POS coach is pretty good if you ask me. In the same circumstances, Russell would be floundering. Guaranteed.

Happy Holiday! True…the trade was way too much for the circumstances that Palmer was in.

I always hoped Palmer would be put into the Brett Favre situation his first year on the Vikings. Couple clutch throws and rely on the running game.

The Atlanta game was a fluke. Ryan had a bad day. That’s all. Nothing was built on it. The defense looked foolished for weeks and weeks after that.

Thank you Matt Ryan for making us feel like an NFL team for one day at least!

  • alex7

    Hi Neil.

what does it mean that there’s nothing excusable about 11 losses? It was the NORM under Al the last decade.

Were there reasons (excuses) for it? Of course. You diagnose them (excuses) so you can fix them. Al didn’t because he wouldn’t fire himself as GM. Today, we know we need a LOT more talent on the roster. A GM who will not likely waste our 1st round picks and FA money is a great start, so I’m eager to see him work.

Ron Rivera would be a great DC hire if Panthers let him go. Tarver can take a positional job as an understudy for a 3-4 D.

Ken Whisenhunt was someone Al offered the OC job to before and might get interest from Reggie. Was saddled with no QB in AZ and would have upgrade here.

Bills, Jets, Cardinals, Chargers, Panthers staff likely being blown up.
