Seymour, Branch, Brisiel not at practice

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, December 27th, 2012 at 11:54 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders are 72 hours or so away from their regular-season finale against the San Diego Chargers. As each day passes, it becomes more and more apparent that defensive tackle Richard Seymour, right guard Mike Brisiel and strong safety Tyvon Branch won’t be able to play, at least at full strength.
All three missed practice today, which makes it likely that Seymour will miss an eighth straight game, Brisiel will be replaced by rookie Tony Bergstrom and Branch might give way to Mike Mitchell rather than risk further injury to his sore ankle.
Branch has played the past two games on the sore ankle, though he wasn’t able to finish the game against the Carolina Panthers last Sunday.

– Quarterback Carson Palmer turned 33 today and defensive tackle Tommy Kelly hit 32.
Palmer won’t play Sunday as a result of the fractured ribs and bruised lung he suffered against the Panthers. He was spotted driving away from the team facility as practice started.
Coach Dennis Allen said Palmer also won’t accompany the team to San Diego because of the danger inherent in flying with a bruised lung.

– Quarterbacks Terrelle Pryor and Matt Leinart are splitting reps at practice in light of Palmer’s absence. It remains uncertain which player will start Sunday.
Allen said Pryor and Leinart split the reps evenly at practice Wednesday, though Pryor made it sound as if Leinart received the majority of the snaps.
“Matt started with the first team for a good bit, and I was getting like the last two or three snaps,” Pryor said. “Not much but more than I was. I’m happy about it. It’s an opportunity and I’m looking forward to it.”
Leinart last started a game Nov. 27, 2011, when he was with the Houston Texans. He suffered a broken collarbone in that game and missed the remainder of the season.
Pryor, of course, has not started a game during his two NFL seasons. He has appeared in three games, with six snaps altogether.

Need both. Consider we have 3 holes to fill (Giggity) on the O-Line and only about 2 on the D-Line.

You pick the best player available when you have needs everywhere. If Joeckel is there at #3 and he is the best player you pick him.

reggie and DA like our d-linemen. they have said as much. DA has said the run game is a big problem. count on bergstrom taking carlisle’s place, but unfortunately, i think that may be it, since brisiel will be in 2nd year of his contract and barnes was seen as solid, although that COULD be a spot they try to fill.

Haha DA is a liar and what makes it worse is he sucks. Im kinda glad hes going to start leinart though because that guarantees the chance of more 3 and outs and the game getting ugly so we can finally get rid of DA the clown.

Of course if the master plan is to keep Knapp and his pathetic version of the ZBS, then you simply turn all of your picks over to the defensive side of the ball because there is no reason to ruin any more young talent on Knapp.

I think we will know better after the combine. I don’t think there is some great player in this draft that some team is going to fall in love with enough to jump up and take the #3 pick. We will have to see if anyone “arrives” after the combine.

I am usually in favor of trading down, but this is a weak draft and if there are only 3-5 players that have the potential to be great, then you should stand pat and take one of them instead of getting a couple of mediocre players.

If this draft was deep, then I would hope they would trade down, but from what I read, this is a weak draft.

Interesting thing we can do is go to Raiders.com and put in for a service call to purchase season tickets…when the Raiders rep calls: “Yeah, I was thinking about purchasing a luxury box for the season, but I heard that the Raiders’ organization is going to retain Gregg Knapp.”

Then…when it comes to Palmer, all their pragmatic, sound reasoning and analysis goes out the window. “Palmer blew the season for us” they say w/o giving any slack.

So, Reggie and DA get a break for having a talentless team they inherited, yet Palmer is supposed to overcome that same “talentless” team and be Superman.

Be honest. It comes down to if you like Reggie and DA you’ll load us up with excuses and if you don’t like Palmer you’ll offer no slack at all.

This team should trade down for multiple picks if we get a top 3 pick. Get a stud DE in the first and the best OL available in the 2nd. In FA go after Malauga, Bowe, Jennings and a starting corner.

    ^^^^^^^
They do need to trade down if they can. They don’t have a 2nd or a 5th rounder this year.

If McK doesn’t trade down from that top 3 pick, then I’m sure he will trade down from his 3rd rounder to get more picks.

    ————

Question will be, is there a team out there willing to do it, its kind of a weak draft for QB’s, RB’s and WR’s. Teams usually trade up to get a franchise QB like RGIII or stud WR like Julio Jones. There aren’t any of those coming out I don’t think.

  30. alex7 Says:

Some young guys have played this season, but I would have like to have seen Taiwan Jones, Pryor, and Bergstrom play more (or at all) in the last 4 games of the season.

Even this coaching staff knew the season was over when we were 1-4…..so those players whould have been rotated in just to see what they could do in a game. In today’s NFL, where you can only hit so much in practice, the only way you can get a true feel for these players is to let them go on game day.

Especially with Pryor, the fact that they kept playing the veterans leads me to believe that maybe Reggie hasn’t patted DA on the head and said his job is secure after all.

Hey, I might be reaching, but I have to have something to hope for right?

But really, Bergstrom should have gotten much more time this year, along with Pryor.

Hell, I suspected the season was over the day we hired Knapp, and I knew the season was over when we started 0-2. Now we don’t know what we have with some of these young guys.

    =====

That’s a very glass half filled point of view. Several players got better under DA, but those that can only see negative see it as 100% fail.

    Those that have improved:

    - Wheeler (was sub average in Indy)
    - Criner (having a better year than he ever did in college)
    - Myers (best TE season since Christensen)
    - Ross, Hanson, Adams (a bunch of nobody DBs looking like NFL keepers)
    - Wisniewski (playing solid at a new position)
    - Reece (used in ways he never has been and succeeding)
    - Palmer (hello 4000 yards passing in 14.5 games)
    - Seabass (his best season ever)
    - Stewart (UDFA looked like a legit backup in his short playing time)
    - Burris (rookie playing better than any projected)
    - Barnes (not the false start, turnstile he was last season — still weak but not horribly so)
    - Bryant (stepping up big time as a start DT)

And really, who can you say regressed? Let’s see,

    - DMac (exposed for not being able to do anything but run through gaping holes)
    - Moore (exposed for lacking the brains to play in a more complex NFL system)
    - Bartell (was an experiment to see if he could return to form after breaking his neck — didn’t pan out)
    - DHB (does seem to be having more trouble getting open than last season)
    - McClain (actually played better than last season but still not good enough to stick)
    - Seymour (physically broke down, which really started the end of last season)
    - Branch? (not sure if you’d say he’s worse or about the same)
    - Lechler (starting to show signs of age)

Really, when oyu break it down, there’s more improvement than degradation in individual players. But looking at it like this makes it so much harder to condone the entire staff.

    ———————————————–
I actually don’t think it’s that simple. What I think happens on these boards is fans fall into either/or camps–either Davis created a huge hole that will take McKenzie & Allen a while to crawl out of, or Davis left a team that was a solid defense away from contending.

What if both of these premises are wrong?

What if Davis left a mess, but one that was manageable had McKenzie done more tweaking and less overhauling?

Similarly, what if Davis left a bona fide disaster and, by virtue of his inexperience, McKenzie (and Mark Davis) managed to actually make it worse?

I get a kick on here with all the obsession with the QB position when clearly the major disaster of 2012 has been the defense. Palmer wasn’t worth what we paid for him, but he was clearly the best card McKenzie and Allen had to play this year.

As for next year, those of us who watched Pryor up close(and as I posted on this very blog last year) know that he doesn’t have NFL QB skills. He’s the reincarnation of Ronald Curry. Take that to the bank.

You won’t want to believe this, but if the Redskins had a proven veteran like Palmer, they probably would’ve sat RGIII for a year too. Almost all of the best all time QBs followed this pattern of sitting and learning, so it’s the right approach if you have the luxury.

But the Redskins didn’t. Last year they started stuck with Rex Grossman and finished experimenting with Beck. They year before was more Grossman and the end of the line for McNabb who showed he was done with career. Before that they came off several years of Capt Checkdown Campbell who they couldn’t wait to run out of town.

Same thing with Indy and Luck. They had possibly the worst QB play in the league following Manning’s injury, so they too were desparate to insert anyone.

Raiders need a DE – one who can stop the run and put the pressure on QB from all over the line , there’s nobody better than Damontre Moore at doing that , remember Texas A&M was the only team to beat Alabama , D Moore was one reason why, his teammate Sean porter OLB wouldn’t be a bad pik either

    =====

Almost every effective pass rusher out there is the benficiary of a great overall line that creates pressure from everywhere. The “great” pass rushers than face a whole lot less double teams and chipping.

Take a look at the whiners and their so-called great DE Aldon Smith. No Justin Smith soaking up attention and suddenly Aldon puts up a goose egg.

Football, more than most sports, is a game of synergy. One or two weak links make an awful lot of the rest look bad. With a lack of overal weak links and a decent system, a unit can look great — just like the depthless whiners defense WHEN everyone is healthy.

We have no pro bowlers because all of our players have regressed under DA… He doesnt have a clue on how to manage talent or a team. Gettem outta here!

    =====

    ^^^^^^^
Not really. No player worth trading up for, unless a team falls in love with Geno Smith or one of the top defenders.

I sympathize with that argument. I made that very same argument early in the season…..and if this coaching staff had shown a marginal improvement in offense, defense, special teams, halftime adjustments or preparedness over the season, then I would be arguing for them to stay.

But you cannot watch the 2012 Raiders and claim that this is a well coached team. A retread coaching staff of mediocre guys, like a Dom Capers, with a Norv Turner and Ron Rivera as coordinators would run circles around our coaching staff if they were given identical rosters.

Seymour, in his broken down state was actually the weak link on the DL and that made the DEs look worse. Now that they’ve adjusted around replacing him with Bryant playing better than Seymour did and Kelly picking up his game with a decent interior partner, the DEs are looking decent again.

Looking at the stats, he has 3 more tackles than he did last season, and has 3 sacks as opposed to 1 last year. How is that degrading? If anything, his biggest step back was from his 5 sack rookie season in 2010 to his year under Hue in 2011. But that also coincided with the breakdown of Seymour, which I still believe is THE biggest reason for his dropoff, especially in the pass rush area.

Personally, I don’t see Houston as a 4-3 DT. He might have the size for it, but he seems agile enough to play the end spot and be stouter against the run than someone like Carter would be. Where the Raiders need help more than anywhere else is in finding another 2010 version of Seymour that can collapse the line from the middle and open everything up for the rest of the line. =====

Did the line overall really regress or did DMac? Again, stats tell at least part of the story.

DMac had 197 rushes this season with an amazing 3.3 average.

The combination of Goodson, Reece and Stewart — wait for it:
118 carries for over 4.9 yards average.

That’s a big enough sample of both DMac and non-DMac to draw some real conclusions from. With less DMac and more of the others, who knows how the season could have been changed by having more effective running game.

Either way, most here are judging the effectiveness of the line by the running game success. And the facts show that the running game was just fine with RBs in there that actually were on the same page with the system they were blocking in. So who really regressed here?

NFL offensive coordinator Greg “Sideways” Knapp was arrested by Oakland police four minutes after the start of the Raiders/Chargers game.

Barker, who had issued written citations to Knapp earlier in the season, said his Oakland P.D. had no choice. “The GM wouldn’t fire him, the coach wouldn’t fire him, the owner wouldn’t fire him, so we had to step in.”

Tatum had 37 career ints. For an intimdator, he could actually cover and make plays on the ball when he felt like it.

By the way, my bad. Was confusing Goldson with Whitmer. Whitmer == Mitchell on a very good defense. For proof look at his 5 year Buffalo career before the Whiners, when he was a high first round pick that got a ton of tackles playing on a bad defense. He got no love. Now he’s on a very good defense where he needs to make way fewer tackles and yet he’s in the pro bowl.

    ————————————————-
When McFadden is in the game, teams focus on stopping him WAY more than they do if another RB is in. There is absolutely no denying that. I think its WAY more likely for an offensive line as a unit, who is being taught a different scheme, by bad coaches who cant implement well in Pollack and Knapp, along with players like Cooper Carlisle and Wiz playing out of position, to be accused of regression over 1 RB, who many believed was #2 in the league behind Peterson before the season started.

If people around here want to convince themselves that Mike Goodson is as good or a better player than DMac, cool. Whatever. I disagree 200%. Like Ive said a million times, Im sure Bill Belichick would have no problem knowing how to use DMac.

Knapp , Pollack, our line, and McFadden are easy for teams to game plan against. If all of you are so convinced McFadden regressed, we’ll see what happens when he goes elsewhere, and plays for competent coaches and game planners.

I don’t get the hate on DA. Are you all really that dense, or just looking for someone to blame for the team being bad? Want to know why Condo, Lechler, and Seabass ended up being neglected for the Pro Bowl? Simple:

Condo has had tons of high snaps this year, and has not been the rock he normally is.

Janikowski has missed three field goald, albeit from long distances. However, the fact that there was an option better than him has nothing to do with the coaches.

Lechler hasn’t been as dominating as years past. How the hell is DA responsible for that?

The team in general lacks talent, gonna take more than a crappy draft and a single offseason to fix all that. Get real.

A football team is a reflection of it’s coaches.

The team sucked this year and we know how much this crap coaching staff contributed to that.

DA hiring someone like Knapp as OC is PROOF of that!

    *******************************

Yes, Whitner is overrated. He was a top 10 pick when he came out. Goldson on the other hand was a 4th round pick.

Anyways, F@#$ the whiners! Hope Goldson leaves them and joins us next year. But in reality, after making the pro bowl, he might be too expensive. Hopfully in the later rounds of the draft we can find a gem. We desperately need a real Free Safety!

Last real FS we had was Rod Woodson! I miss Eric Turner (RIP).

The only time Gruden was relevant was when he was Bucs coach? Doesnt sound like you know much about the Raiders. Bucs wanted Gruden BECAUSE of what he did with the Raiders. He took over a 4-12 team from Joe Bugel, turned them to an 8-8 team his rookie coaching season, ended up getting us to 12-4, then 10-6. Sounds like pretty good turn around to me.

That would be cool, if he inherited a bad team. He didnt take over the 2-14 Art Shell Raiders. He didnt take over the Lane Kiffin Raiders. He took over a team that was 8-8 2 years in a row, and was a single play away from making the playoffs last year. Was that a Super Bowl team? No. Is this team playing worse than it played last year? Yes.

Hes had a full season. This board has gone week after week, game after game, with examples of his ineptitude. We’ve given numerous reasons why we believe he is NOT a good coach.

You have given zero reasons why you believe he is or can be a good coach.

Maybe a season where the entire team is performing worse than they did one season ago is not enough for you to be able to assess whats going on. Fine. But its been enough for me to see that this guy doesnt have what it takes.

Some things take longer for some of us to realize than others. Oh, well.

No point arguing on this board anymore with people that think Dennis Allen is the guy. Its pointless. He clearly isnt, but I guess some people want to see him lose even more than he already has.

Forget Hue acting like a total idiot, and prima donna, demanding more control. Or him throwing the team under the bus, after stating all along he deserved all the blame. He got fired because he didn’t just do an inadequate job, but, as you can see above, Hue did a horrible job.————————-

Sure, Al died with his team 6-4 and in 1st place in the division. He also has 3 SB rings, and has given Hall of Fame speeches for more Hall Of Famers than ANYONE on Earth. Fact. Just stop. Trying to bring up Al Davis in a comparison between Dennis Allen and Hue Jackson is lame. You can do better than that.

So, did Art Shell deserve to be fired? I think we all agree that the answer is yes.

Dennis Allen’s defense has been worse. And the offense this season has been horrible, with FAR better talent than what Shell had.

Lets see, Aaron Brooks and Andrew Walter or Carson Palmer?

    Lamont Jordan or Darren McFadden?

    Courtney Anderson or Myers/Ausberry?

They had Moss. OK. And Ronald Curry, Whitted, Gabriel.

This team has far more talent than that team on the offensive side. We had a good D that year, but all in all, the expectations between that season and this season were not even close.

    Elite? Probably not.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

WTF?? The team Palmer has around him is an All-Century team compared to what JR had around him in 2008 or 2009. And somehow, JR led us to a 5-10 record in 2008 compared to Palmer’s 4-11. Forget that “best QB since Gannon” blsht! When Palmer can lead this team to 5 victories, or any other team for that matter, come talk to me. Until then, JR was the better QB in Oakland.

I say this is worse. This was supposed to be a team of “professionals”.

Shell brought Walsh from making pancakes. He wasnt gonna be very good, no matter what. And Shell took over a 4-12 team. Dennis Allen took over an 8-8 team. People wanna talk about DA having it rough? Please. He was put in a position to succeed, and failed. Period.

The Dennis Allen era is worse than Art Shell 2. THAT team was TRULY a rebuilding team. This, was not. This was a team that needed a few tweaks to get BETTER. Progress should have been made. Instead, we fall back to the middle of the 2000s, erasing the progress we were making the last 2 seasons, at 8-8. People talk of rebuilding. WE WERE REBUILDING. We were in the SB in 2002. We had a few bad seasons, but then back to back 8-8. THATS WHAT YOU BUILD ON and MAKE IMPROVEMENTS TO. These guys came in here and destroyed the progress of two years straight.

We should not have only gotten 4 wins this season.
We should not have been blown out multiple times.
We should not have had to watch our offense get WORSE, because they promised it would get BETTER.

Dennis Allen did a bad job. People need to stop vouching for him like hes the second coming of Madden. Hes not.

I don’t know if I agree. If you look at the the things he had complete control of, the defense, team playing hard, and overall penalties; I saw progress… especially lately. And lets not pretend he had much to work with in talent on defense, especially with Seymour hurt. The defense sucked last year too.

His main mistake was trusting an abject idiot to be in complete control of the offense. There was plenty of talent on offense… with CP coming back and having an entire off season to learn the play book. This was a top ten offense last year with McF.

I believe you would be referring to a Mr. Mike White. AKA Hue Jackson 1.

Mike White ran a WCO system, thats why he took over from Art Shell Part 1, because Shell and Walsh were getting Hostetler killed with the 7 step drops.

Hue ran a system similar to what Baltimore runs but with more downfield passing.

    >>>>>

He is responsible for hiring Knapp, I agree. But the point is that he is making progress with the stuff he didn’t turn over to Knapp.

As a HC with defensive training ONLY, Allen trusted Knapp with the entire offense. Thus the responsibility lies mostly at Knapps feet. Thats how business hierarchy works.

Now if Knapp retains his job and we are the 29th ranked running attack again next year… the responsibility shifts to Allen. He has a chance to make changes this off-season, and from reading most Raider forums, that is what is EXPECTED.

Either way, most here are judging the effectiveness of the line by the running game success. And the facts show that the running game was just fine with RBs in there that actually were on the same page with the system they were blocking in. So who really regressed here?

    ======

Oh, that makes total sense! So the other teams only actually tried to stop the run when DMac was back there, but they didn’t really care when someone else was in the backfield. They were perfectly happy to give up 4.9 yards per rush attempt when it wasn’t DMac, based on his Raiders blog reputation.

I guess that just shows how brilliant the Raiders coaching staff actually is then, because they gave about 40% of the carries to the other guys. It was the perfect counter to get the other teams to stop worrying about the run.

Mike Goodson is actually as good or better of a RB in the Raiders system. He has the stats to prove it. Unfortunately, he seems to also be equally as fragile. Still, he costs less than 10% of DMac this season. So for your money, you’re getting 10 times the player. In fact, Goodson, Reece AND Stewart — all players that did better in this system (thanks to the other teams not paying attention to them) combined cost less than 20% of DMac’s cap hit this season.

DMac can only effectively run behind gaping holes where he can use his sprinter speed to try to outrun safeties. That spells for a limited career in the NFL. He is a decent blocker as a RB, which I’ll give him the edge over all the other backs on the Raiders, and used to be a better receiver until he got a serious case of the dropsies this season. And then of course you only get 8-10 games a season out of a guy that is the third most expensive player on the team. He not only regressed more than most, but he and Seymour together are easily the worst bang for the buck players on the roster.

Oh wait, DMac is worth all that money because his presence means the other teams don’t try to stop the run when he’s not on the field. So in reality he’s a real expensive decoy. Brilliant!
