Looks like Bergstrom, Ross to start
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, December 28th, 2012 at 11:53 am in Oakland Raiders.
With Mike Brisiel a spectator at practice and Phillip Adams not present at practice Friday, it appears rookie third-round pick Tony Bergstrom will open at right guard and Brandian Ross at cornerback against the San Diego Chargers.
Strong safety Tyvon Branch was on the field, as he has been the previous two Fridays, when he managed to get on the field to face the Chiefs and Panthers. Branch did not finish the game against Carolina, giving way to Mike Mitchell.
Quarterback Carson Palmer, who is not expected to make the trip, was a spectator for the first time since getting knocked out of the Carolina game with a bruised lung and cracked ribs. Palmer is not expected to make the trip.
As warm-ups and drills came to a close, Terrelle Pryor was taking snaps with the first team offense. Coach Dennis Allen may or may not declare a starter when he meets the media following practice Friday.

Play all the backups.
Let’s see who want’s to be a Raider next year.
December 28th, 2012 at 11:54 am
In that Pitt game, Vick fumbled three times, lost two of them, one at the 2 yard line stalling a great McCoy drive, another inside the 30 yard line setting up a Pitt TD.
Debo, didn’t you tell us to watch the games a few hours ago?

Cutting/trading Palmer for Vick, Flynn, Fitzpatrick?
Are you guys high?
Let’s see what Pryor can do. If he lights it up, he and CP can go at it for starter next year in camp. Otherwise, expect to see CP penciled in as starter the second the clock hits 0.00 this Sunday.
Palmer put up 4000 yards, 22TD 14INT in a KNAPP offense with slackers like Moore at the very limited DHB at WR with virtually 0 running game and a below average O Line.
That’s like 6000 yards and 40TDs anywhere else.
I’m not saying he’s great but he’s better than the scrap heap you guys are digging up.

If Reid gets fired and according to “Rumors” they hire Chip Kelly then there is a good chance Vick stays. He will have to restructure his contract.

Chip Kelly isn’t taking his first NFL gig and saddling himself with an aging, injury-prone, turnover machine at QB.

TP getting the first team reps at the start of practice. Good!!
Doesn’t sound very conspiracy theorish to me though.

it appears rookie third-round pick Tony Bergstrom will open at right guard

I hope Reggie watches this carefully. If the late 3rd round pick is no drop off from a $20M guy, maybe you should spend a bit more money on those computers.

Then again, he did draft Bergstrom, so I digress.

The Eagles “Vick” situation should have played out the same way with the Raiders. Palmer should have been benched weeks ago and they should of let TP take over just like Foles. I would guess TP would have done pretty good and people would be talking about Palmer getting cut now.

u mean like foles did so well? why would a team replace the #18 passer of all time with an unknown who can’t pass the ball?

December 28th, 2012 at 12:01 pm
Palmer is under contract and had 4000+ yards in 14.25 games.
He’ll restructure. No doubt in my mind.
If TP beats him out, he’ll get traded.
That being said, TP6 would need a HUGE performance on Sunday and that’s only IF they start him.
I say why not?
Starting Lienart gives you absolutely nothing. The very definition of going through the motions.

Yeah, but even at that, I never thought Cassell looked good in a KC uniform. In 2010, didn’t we absolutely terrorize him in the season finale?
Cassell sucks.
Every time I’ve watched a KC-Oak game with hi under center, I’m confident whoever we trot out there, he’s better than Matt.
He had two crappy INTs in the Carson debut game too. And got benched for Brady Quinn…
I HOPE AND PRAY KC gets a D Lineman in the draft and keep Cassell.

Disagree that no matter what Carson Palmer is the QB next year.
Last two full seasons he went 4-12. Bengals put in a rookie (a really good one but still a rookie) and made their first back-to-back playoff appearances in 30 years.
Carson held back the Bengals, and is holding us back now.

I’m also pretty sure Palmers int’s drop from 14 to 12 or 11 and his overall TD’s go up a few with a running game and WR’s who can catch.

I love the excuse of Reggie having “the worst” situation to deal with.
Too bad Al died, because I feel confident that he would have managed the cap issue MUCH better than McKenzie did. Al always managed, every year, to massage the cap. He was a master at it. Al very rarely did not get players that he wanted. Whether we liked those players or not, he still got HIS players.
We had 2 straight 8-8 seasons that we were building off of. A coach that started as our OC and worked his way to being PROMOTED to HC, based on the improvements he made with our offense. That coach took us to 7-4, and first place in the division. Our owner/GM/Assistant DC dies mid season, our starting RB and QB go down, we get a new QB off the couch, and end up 8-8. Things ended sour, but we still had a good system in place to build off of.
Reggie disagrees, guts the whole staff, and picks “his guy” to take things over. They came here talking playoffs and fighting for the division, not in 3-5 years, but THIS YEAR. They didnt start that “woe is me, I wouldnt wish this on my worst enemy” BS until AFTER we all had to bear witness to the disaster that McKenzie created when he decided to scrap the rebuilding phase we were ALREADY IN.
Dennis & Reggie, 4-12.
My question is, if we could turn back the clock, and instead of Reggie/DA in 2012, we still had Davis/Jackson, would we still be 4-12?
December 28th, 2012 at 12:08 pm

——–
How did he do?
Palmer put up great numbers under similar circumstances. Wasn’t benched for a mid round rookie either.
Palmer will restructure and be our QB next year.
You guys are on Fantasy Island for real today.
———————
Palmer still had a “starting” O line. Big difference. That Foles kid is not that good. They did go 1-5 with him.
There is a good chance Vick stays with the Eagles.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
People railing on our pass protection are living on “Fantasy Island”. That’s one thing you have to give Knapp. By moving the pocket around, Palmer has had all day to throw on numerous occasions. Comparing our OL to Philly’s is madness! THREE starters lost to injury by game 6! And one of those losses was arguably the best LT in the game BEFORE the season! He was replaced by Foles due to the concussion he got against Dallas. No big deal. Just happened here in Oakland on a play where Palmer clearly held the ball too long. Kind of like Foles though. Have a hard time understanding how he could have gone after Locker, Gabbert and Dalton.

This assumes that he is willing to restructure in a way friendly to the Raiders. He already did this season to defer money to future years. I don’t see him giving any of the money up, so it would mean pushing it out even further. Get his cap hit down to the 5-6M range in 2013 and maybe 2014 but then there’s going to be a major acceleration hit if they want to cut their ties after that.
Or I guess there’s the off chance that he would just give up future money if he really likes his situation here. But I bet the house that if he does that type of deal it will definitely include a no trade clause.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely want him starting at least the next two seasons. I don’t see any better options out there available as trade or FA, and clearly the long term option past Palmer doesn’t exist on the roster. If they do get a new deal done, then I can see them drop a 3rd or 4th pick on the guy that they want to develop for the 2015 time frame.
Of course near the end of 2013, there’s going to be all this clamor for why that guy isn’t starting in the last 5 games of the season
Especially so he can build chemistry with the new WR project wearing #7.

Revisionist history.
Throughout the 90’s the Bengals are one of the worst franchises in the NFL. Bad decisions, poor drafts, bad coaching, bad players. They end up with Carson Palmer, #1, BECAUSE of how terrible they had been the year before.
They go 8-8 his 1st season as starter.
They go 11-5 his 2nd season as starter, 1st place in AFC North. He throws for 3800 yards, 32 TDs and a 67% completion rating. In his SECOND SEASON STARTING. Hardly small potatoes. He is then injured by PITT in the playoffs, on a play where I feel von Oelhoffen made a dirty hit to Palmers knee, but thats another story. Bottom line is, trying to make it like he held the Bengals back is complete nonsense. The team starting breaking apart after that, and it is WELL documented fact that owner Mike Brown was NOT willing to spend money to make the team any better. Not to mention the circus that playing with Ocho Cinco at that time had become.
Dalton has done what has been asked, but he is NOT the reason the Bengals have turned around. Its been their drafting and the team they have put together the last few seasons. Last I checked, Dalton didnt play defense. It also helps having a mean O-line like CIN, as well as one of the best young WRs in the league in AJ Green. I think its safe to say that if you put Palmer on THIS Bengals team, he could do what Dalton is being asked to do, and MUCH more.
Just wanted to clear up the historical aspect here, to paint an accurate picture.
Carry on.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
On the 2-yd line, he was the primary ball carrier with two arms wrapped around the ball. He took a big hit by one of the hardest hitters in the league (Ryan Clark) and it came out. Sucks, but the score was 0-0 in the 1st qtr and Pitt ended up punting it back to the Eagles. On the second one, the dude was overwhelmed by pressure and fumbled on a blind-sided hit. At the end of the day, he got the ball at the beginning of the 4th qtr with a chance to take the lead and he delivered. I don’t kill QBs for fumbles when they’re getting killed by pressure. They’re prone to them because they’re trying to make plays downfield. It happens to every QB in the league.

Carry on.

ur just gonna confuse them.

He’s rushed for 5,526 yards in his career and has scored 34 rushing TDs. For his career, he’s averaged 7.2 yds per carry!! The guy has taken TWO teams to the playoffs! Obviously, Palmer hasn’t, even though we gave up a king’s ransom for him to do just that. We’d be very lucky to get Vick here.

Dalton is a clearly overmatched player with an awesome team around him. As long as he doesn’t get in the way, the Bengals will out talent you. That team is a stud QB away from being real contenders for the SB. All the more reason why I don’t get Palmer quitting on them.

Look at all the recent “Good” QB’s. You can go back as far as you want but good QB’s find a way to win. It’s that simple. I think guys like Matt Ryan are a little over rated but he wins. Can you even name any considered “Good” or elite QB’s in Palmer’s era who have not been apart of winning teams? No not really. Palmer had one 11-5 season with the Bengals and that was it. He is not a winner.

My post was a rebuttal to you saying that CP was holding the Bengals back. It was false. I think we all would rather have 25 year old CP. Thats not what I was saying. I was laying out how the Bengals had been a bad franchise for a decade and that Carson Palmer was a big part in them turning that around, as opposed to “holding them back” or making them worse.
Bengals have been one of the better drafting teams in the league over the past few seasons, and its shown. They have players all over the field, ESPECIALLY on D. Dalton is pretty good, havent seen anything special, but hes been solid. But he came into a WAY better situation than the one CP came into when he started out, and he hasnt looked anything close to as good as THAT Carson Palmer. Bengals have a good, upcoming TEAM. Dalton is doing what hes asked, but lets not make it seem like hes played “better” than Carson ever did, and that CP was what was holding the Bengals back, because its simply untrue.
December 28th, 2012 at 12:34 pm

That explains a lot then. Trent Dilfer should be in the Hall of Fame as what is unarguably a classification as a GOOD QB.
Dan Fouts clearly could not have been good, despite the fact that he was the most prolific passer of his era. He just didn’t get it done on defense, so he could not have been good.

Pryor gets the start over backup Matt Leinart who struggled in the team’s 17-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers last Sunday. Leinart completed 16-of-32 passes for 115 yards and one interception.
