Pryor to start against Chargers

Terrelle Pryor will start the regular-season finale against the San Diego Chargers Sunday, Raiders coach Dennis Allen said.

“I’ve decided to go with Terrelle Pryor as our quarterback,’’ Allen said Friday following practice. “He’ll play in the game and we’ll see how the game goes. He’s the starter, and we’re going to go into it as we would any other game.’’

Allen said Pryor and Matt Leinart had been told earlier in the week Pryor was the likely starter.

“I wanted to see how each player responded,’’ Allen said. “I thought Terrelle responded well. I think he gives us a unique element of athleticism at the quarterback position and I think he deserves to get an opportunity to get out there and see what he can do.

“I’m anxious to see him play. I want to see him get out there and relax, play the game of football the way it’s supposed to be played. I want to see him take command of the huddle. I want to see us get in and out of the huddle and the operation be smooth. I want to see him protect the football, make sure he makes good decisions.’’

Allen said Leinart “didn’t like’’ the decision and tha the didn’t expect him, as a competitor, to like it.

Pryor has played only six snaps in the past two games, a there-and-out series against the Kansas City Chiefs and three specialty plays against the Carolina Panthers where he was a shotgun quarterback with Carson Palmer or Matt Leinart split wide.

    Chip Kelly could get any coaching job in college and write his own check, and even go to some handpicked NFL jobs.

    So what would he get low-balled by Reggie in Oakland?

    =============================================

    Also, why would he move down to Oakland, only to get fired after one year? Makes no sense.

    What makes you think Reggie would lowball a new coach prospect?

    @Just Fire Baby

    Why would anybody take the Raiders job?

    Well any coach that comes in and turns the Raiders around wouldn’t he/she be considered a genius? A great football mind? Not saying it would happen, but if John Gruden came back and led the Raiders to the playoffs, wouldn’t that almost guarantee him into the HOF?

    Thats tough to see.

    I think the over/under for completions is 8. SD was swarming CP in the first game… and I simply don’t see Knapp smart enough to keep TP out of trouble.

    SD is second in the league in sacks remember.

    I still think by the second half TP will just say screw it and take off running every play not designed to run.

    Are we looking for that, or a winning team? Because once Tony Dungy’s team in Tampa dissipated, Gruden was a hot mess. Add to that no NFL coach in the last half-century being successful in his second stint with a team, and it’s hard to see the Gruden-love.

    This time last year we were 1-5 in our last six games, and would have been 0-6 if Richard Seymour didn’t miraculously block two kicks in the same game to beat KC.

    Mike Shanahan would have never gotten Raiders to the Super Bowl with his fines for sitting on helmets. He hit a gold mine with Elway. In fact, DA reminds me of a pre-Elway Shanahan. DA also reminds me of the stubborness displayed by Rex Ryan. DA’s the type of coach that would serve up the third-stringer for 11 more sacks in the next game. Thank God Reggie and/or Mark stepped in.

    The first one, maybe. I’m chalking the second one up to bad special teams coaching on the Chiefs’ part.

    Either way, it’s something you almost never see, which is why the difference between 1-5 and 0-6 to end the year is merely semantics. We sucked down the stretch, and 4-11 is merely an extension of that, minus certain players McKenzie would have kept and/or signed if he could, and a lack of a first or second round draft choice.

    I think Knapp and Hoffman get the axe for sure.

    Tarver probably stays.

    I suspect the hiring process for the new assistants will be collaborative, with DA getting the final say. And he’ll already know that he’d better get it right this time. Being able to start hiring assistants as soon as the season ends will help a TON.

  • Just Fire Baby

    Dutch,

    Well the reason our current coaches have been taking the job (Callahan, Shell, Kiffin, Cable, Hue, DA) is because it is the best job they have been offered.

    When you start talking about the Chip Kelly’s and Jon Gruden’s, that isn’t the case anymore.

    i can remember when we drafted Russel I was so excited. After he played in the last game to knock tb out of the playoffs I was sure we had a qb for years to come. Well we know what happened, a perfect shid storm.

    Now I look at pryor, not only is a far more athletic than russel, but his work ethic is unmatched.

    He is one of the first guys in and one of the last guys to leave.
