Final: Chargers 24, Raiders 21

The Raiders closed the books on a 4-12 season Sunday by rallying from a 17-point deficit only to fall 24-21 to the San Diego Chargers before 66,486 fans at Qualcomm Stadium.

A blocked punt by Coye Francies, recovered by Kaelin Burnett, helped set up Terrelle Pryor’s second touchdown pass, a 5-yard flip to Denarius Moore with 1:52 to play.

San Diego’s Michael Spurlock, who opened the scoring with a 99-yard touchdown return on the opening kickoff, then recovered an onsides kick with 1:51 to play. The Chargers then killed the clock to finish 7-9.

San Diego quarterback Phillip Rivers threw touchdown passes of 11 yards to Antonio Gates, 34 yards to Danorio Alexander and Nick Novak kicked a 30-yad field goal as the Chargers finished 7-9.

Pryor, in his starting debut, broke an 10-quarter touchdown drought with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Darrius Heyward-Bey in the second quarter and had a 3-yard touchdown run with 7:43 left and the Raiders trailing 24-7.

Pryor, however, struggled with his passing and didn’t get a lot of help from his receivers, with at least three dropped passes plus some other opportunities where the throws were off-target but still could have been caught.

Pryor completed 13 of 28 passes for 150 yards, one touchdown, and one costly interception by Quentin Jammer in the end zone on a first-half pass with too much loft intended for Heyward-Bey. He also ran for 49 yards on nine carries, mostly on scrambles rather than designed runs.

If there was a turning point from the Raiders, it came after Pryor directed a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive that resulted in the touchdown pass to Heyward-Bey.

Pryor had a 10-yard pass to Rod Streater and a 17-yard completion to Brandon Myers, both on the move, and got the Raiders to the 9-yard line with an 8-yard scramble before the touchdown with 12:11 left in the quarter.

When the Raiders most needed a stop, San Diego embarked an epic 14-play, 81-yard drive that took 9:23 on the clock before Rivers threw the touchdown pass to Gates.

Included on the drive was a 6-yard run by upback Eric Weddle out of punt formation out of fourth-and-1, as well as 5-yard defensive penalties on the Raiders for encroachment (Tommy Kelly) and offsides (Lamar Houston).

Oakland’s second touchdown came after an eight-play, 76-yard drive which included one of the few long-distance hookups Pryor managed all day, a 38-yard strike to Streater to the San Diego 3-yard line.

Those numbers are crazy but Al had no intention of paying out those contracts. Numbers can be manipulated.

Its not like an REAL HCs have been knocking our doors down to coach here.

  • The_Judge37

this isnt a “fake out the media” Raiders thing anymore….. Davis has very little to offer unless he gives Gruden total control, part ownership

AND HE’D STILL HAVE TO PAY DENNIS ALLEN AND REGGIE MC KENZIE

    they’re UNDER CONTRACT.
    ——

I’m all for Gruden as HC, but in no way should total control be handed to any HC, espcially Gruden.

Hopefully Knapp doesnt last today. So who to replace him? Dare I say Norv?

Yes, unfortunately, I agree it appears that they are going to keep DA and let Knapp take the fall for the ENTIRE 4-12 record, including the 443 points given up. All Im saying is, it just doesnt make sense and isnt a good idea to me.

Dennis Allen should have stripped Knapp a LONG time ago. A smart head coach would have done that. Im just not sold on DA being any good. And if hes staying, which it appears, Im not confident that things will get much better under this guy. Too many questionable situations throughout the season, and not enough bright spots.

    ———————————–

They have to grind and find a bunch of lower round guys who can contribute right away…lessen those contracts and NOT MISS on that first round pick, if not trade down to stockpile picks.

  • DennisAllensVisor

Its not like playing Madden, coaches have to actually want to coach here before you can hire them.

Norv to Baltimore…he can take his time and pick anywhere…maybe even Houston if they get bounced early.

The only hope is if he wants to stay in Cali (SF was previous stop) and just get back to Oakland, turn it around…but maybe he’ll take a year off – it worked wonders for Shanahan…then again, Shanahan had rings when he left.

    Fired HC so far:
    Andy Reid – Eagles
    Pat Schemer – Browns
    Romeo Crennel – Chiefs
    Lovie Smith – Bears
    Chan Galey – Bills
    Ken Whisenhut – Cardinals
    Norv Turner – Chargers

So when do we hear the magic words? “The following assistant coaches have been released – Greg Knapp, Steve Hoffman & Frank Pollard”.

If I had to guess, I would say Reggie is always looking to hire people he’s worked with at Green Bay, or who also worked at Green Bay once, who came thru the WCO coaching tree of Bill Walsh.

Guys like Jon Gruden, Andy Reid, etc will be on his radar.

    ==========

more like Marty Mohrningweg, who was OC under Andy Reid and a supposed coaching interest. – Reid will cost a fortune even as OC

    ======

Yep, all those sorts of ex-Packers or Walsh Tree types, who are cheap, not expensive.

Anyone have a comprehensive list of ex-Packers coaches, current Packers assistants, and Walsh Tree coaches?

I think Allen might get fired.

    Here’s why.

Reggie was the carefully sought after GM, Mark spending time with Madden, Wolf and Herrock in determining a long-term GM.

When Reggie came, he didn’t have much time to hire a HC and staff under that HC.

I think Reggie will want to spend a lot more time this time in a HC hire, especially with this Black Monday where a ton of excellent coaching talent is available for hire as HCs, not just co-ordinators.
