Final: Chargers 24, Raiders 21

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, December 30th, 2012 at 4:26 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders closed the books on a 4-12 season Sunday by rallying from a 17-point deficit only to fall 24-21 to the San Diego Chargers before 66,486 fans at Qualcomm Stadium.

A blocked punt by Coye Francies, recovered by Kaelin Burnett, helped set up Terrelle Pryor’s second touchdown pass, a 5-yard flip to Denarius Moore with 1:52 to play.

San Diego’s Michael Spurlock, who opened the scoring with a 99-yard touchdown return on the opening kickoff, then recovered an onsides kick with 1:51 to play. The Chargers then killed the clock to finish 7-9.

San Diego quarterback Phillip Rivers threw touchdown passes of 11 yards to Antonio Gates, 34 yards to Danorio Alexander and Nick Novak kicked a 30-yad field goal as the Chargers finished 7-9.

Pryor, in his starting debut, broke an 10-quarter touchdown drought with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Darrius Heyward-Bey in the second quarter and had a 3-yard touchdown run with 7:43 left and the Raiders trailing 24-7.

Pryor, however, struggled with his passing and didn’t get a lot of help from his receivers, with at least three dropped passes plus some other opportunities where the throws were off-target but still could have been caught.

Pryor completed 13 of 28 passes for 150 yards, one touchdown, and one costly interception by Quentin Jammer in the end zone on a first-half pass with too much loft intended for Heyward-Bey. He also ran for 49 yards on nine carries, mostly on scrambles rather than designed runs.

If there was a turning point from the Raiders, it came after Pryor directed a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive that resulted in the touchdown pass to Heyward-Bey.

Pryor had a 10-yard pass to Rod Streater and a 17-yard completion to Brandon Myers, both on the move, and got the Raiders to the 9-yard line with an 8-yard scramble before the touchdown with 12:11 left in the quarter.

When the Raiders most needed a stop, San Diego embarked an epic 14-play, 81-yard drive that took 9:23 on the clock before Rivers threw the touchdown pass to Gates.

Included on the drive was a 6-yard run by upback Eric Weddle out of punt formation out of fourth-and-1, as well as 5-yard defensive penalties on the Raiders for encroachment (Tommy Kelly) and offsides (Lamar Houston).

Oakland’s second touchdown came after an eight-play, 76-yard drive which included one of the few long-distance hookups Pryor managed all day, a 38-yard strike to Streater to the San Diego 3-yard line.

HueSux gets the HC gig in AZ, then trades for Carcux, the Raiders get a first and a second, he says that with Carcux he’ll take AZ to the sb.

  • RaidO

Come on Raiders let the FIRINGS begin.

A lot of good coaches available.

Tony Sporano or Juan Castillo for OL coach.

    Get it done ASAP.
    *********************

Bring back Bob Wylie. He did a great job while here. He took a haphazard O-line and brought them in at #5 the first year.

  • The_Judge37

Wisenhunt or Smith are Coaches Mark needs to break the piggy bank open for. They’ll get HC offers so no dreams of them coming in to be Coordinators for Dennis “Blank Man” Allen

  • DennisAllensVisor

Rivera was already told he wouldnt be fired according to CBS.

  • Al_is_theraiders

at least that punk aszs whisenhunt got canned…though anything az needs to get canned.

  • dr_robert

Terrell’s Pryor isn’t in the same u oversees as Carson Palmer.

    FIRE MARK DAVIS NOW!

  • raiderlization

Dennis is only about D he has no clue on Offence! He needs to hire a Fired HC who was a OC even a Norval LOL!P.S. He did grow up a Raiders Fan! LMAO!

  • Thec

Turner will be OCO for either dalla$$, or the jest.
Thinking he would come here is crazy talk.

  • ray_d

Hey if we can get a proven coach, fire DA’s arse now. Im starting to hate looking at his rat face. Bring in Gruden to clean this mess up.

Will the first person who truly believes in his heart and mind that Dennis Allen is the BEST man for this job please stand up?

I hear the arguments to keep him. They just arent very convincing.

    >>>>

The coaching carousal ended when Al died. Sorry. Allen may not be a great coach (too early to tell) but no team builds a franchise by firing HCs every season. I hope DA lasts three season regardless of record.

Name a perennial playoff team that fires their HC every season… I will wait.

    tap tap
    ———————————-
    Allow me to retort:

“The coaching carousal ended when Al died.”
False. It is a fact that the very FIRST thing GM Reggie McKenzie did when he was given the job was fired the previous Head Coach for “his guy”. So, the 1st point, you just made up.

#2 “Allen may not be a great coach”
Thats exactly the point Im making. After a full training camp, pre-season, and regular season of evaluating him and his mistakes, I do not at all feel confident that he is a GOOD coach, let alone great. Ive given reasons as to why, stats, records, pointed out scenarios. I have valid reasons for MY opinion, which brings me to

#3 “no team builds a franchise by firing HCs every season.”
I agree with this. And I never stated anything that Im in disagreement with this. I dont believe in hiring and firing a coach every year. I believe in giving a coach time IF he shows enough to build upon. And to me, sorry, Dennis Allen hasnt done it. You say that you HOPE DA gets 3 years REGARDLESS of W-L record. Wow. Well, sorry, I just cant subscribe to that line of thinking. So, even if he goes 4-12 again in 2013, you STILL want to see him back for continuities sake? I cant agree, sorry.

#4 “Name a perennial playoff team that fires their HC every season… I will wait.”
I cant. I never tried to, so that wasnt my point. Perennial playoff teams usually ALREADY have a good HC. So, why would they fire and hire another coach? I dont get that one. Why compare Raiders to perennial playoff teams? We’re not one, and we dont have a good head coach. Thats my whole point for wanting to get rid of the guy we have. Not because I dont believe in continuity. I love continuity. DA is just not a guy who has shown me sh!t. It is what it is.

Not a Hue head, but if HE wadnt good enough, Dennis Allen definitely isnt.

We faced 2 rookie head coaches this season. Philbin for Miami and Schiano for the Bucs. Both of those teams improved over last season. Both of those teams smashed us this year. And going through the roster, neither of those teams have “superior” talent to us. So, sorry, Dennis doesnt have a lot of excuses. People dont want to compare Colts turnaround cause they got Luck, Ok fine. But Schiano made the Bucs 7-9 his first season, after they were 4-12 last season. 7-9 isnt playoffs, but its improvement. THAT merits more time. Dennis Allen took an 8-8 team to 4-12.

I dont believe Dennis Allen is the best man for the job, I believe that we can upgrade the HC position, and thats just where it stands.

  • The_Judge37

    Preview of The Allen Presser:

“We are not making any decisions at this time. Obviously we’re dissapointed with how this season turned out, but we’ll evaluate every aspect of this Team from top to bottom in the comming weeks, then decide how to move foward”

Don’t expect anything more ground breaking than this

  • JB

Wasn’t Chan Galey a decent OC?

  • raiderlization

We need help on Offence and anyone of these guys would be good Cards did beat us LOL!

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

What’s the point in retaining a HC who has training wheels on while he coaches, and who doesn’t have a full command of all three sides of the ball, someone who just focuses on D and relies on co-ordinators who are excellent to make his HC’ing look good.

I think Allen will go, IF Reggie can get one of these excellent coaches (including college coaches) to be interested and find out what kind of staff these coaches want to bring with them.

That’s why I think we wont hear much yet. It’ll take a week or so as Reggie will phone around and gauge interest before deciding whether to retain Allen or not.

  • Thec

DA led team will improve to at best 5-11.

  • No Mas Diamante

No to the retreads. This game is changing and we need new ideas. Fresh thinking. Why do you think those guys were all fired? Also think Gruden is way overrated. he had one super bowl with Tony Dungy’s team and then got fired.

Guys, I am having problems typing in the comment box. There is a big delay from typing to when it appears on the screen. I assume it is because of the number of comments on this post. If you open a word document and type there, and then copy and paste the comment into the comment box, it is much faster.

Hey Tarver lovers…at least you have some stats that can back up your wish to keep him around, unlike the Dennis Allen lovers. How about this compromise; Norv as OC, Rivera (assuming he is fired) as HC, and Tarver can be Rivera’s right hand man (coffee maker).

That would be funny considering Norv was Rivera’s HC in SD

  • RaidO

DA hired Knapp. That is all you need to know.

    FIRE DA!!!!

  • Thec

I am all for continuity however, DA really isnt that good.

To keep him for continuity sake would mean another losing season.

Why continue down this path of insanity?

  • hwnrdr

You know what…I’ll have to agree with GG! Who knows…but who would we really get?

  • hwnrdr

And about Norv…how you know he doesn’t want to come home?

  • The_Judge37

It’s important to bring in someone who wants to coach these players that we have on the roster. Not just have it tailor made to what they think might work, but guys who want DMC, Reese, Moore, Palmer etc. and then add to their own vision

Gotta love how MistaBrown thinks Seymour Bush and I are the same person.

Then again, MistaBrown also thought we’d get a…a…a…

    “ROMNEY LANDSLIDE”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Derek

If Denise Allen isn’t fired she should at least be demoted. That way MD can get something for his money. There are a ton of better coaches available and giving DA any additional time as HC is a total waste of a season or two. The broad is worthless, she can’t lead, or inspire. Let hope this year Davis and Spots do not wait until the last minute and we get stuck with SCRAPS/SCRUBS again.

  • ray_d

Is Reggies’s Gut sepaking to him about DA right now, time to move on, Bring in a winner.

  • J Hill

Well the Hue Jackson debate will be settled this offseason, lol.

With all these openings, surely he gets a HC gig next season, right?

  • No Mas Diamante

    No old school retreads…

  • Thec

Norv has been linked to at least 2 OCO jobs.

Jest, and Dalla$$. i even seen something about Balt.

Not sure oak is in the consideration.

  • kokomo

Looks like our wish has come true. Knapp is fired.

    Ian Rapoport @RapSheet
Some movement for the #Raiders besides OC Greg Knapp being let go. Two more offensive coaches. Also LB coach Johnny Holland out.

    Raiders fired OC Greg Knapp.
Per NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, “two more offensive coaches” have been let go, as well. It was disastrous one-year stint for Knapp in Oakland, as he refused to adjust his zone-blocking scheme despite having one of the premier power runners in the game at his disposal in Darren McFadden. The Raiders went from averaging 22.4 points under Hue Jackson in 2011 to 18.1. An impressive majority of those points came in garbage time. Knapp has likely coordinated his last offense, but his run-game prowess should earn him a position coach job for 2013.

We’re gonna evaluate the possibility of possible roster upgrades, we got the penalties down and we need to get them down further for next week…huh? oh that doent matter i mean next season…yeah knapp is agreat offensive coordinator but we need to evaluate whats gonna be the best direction…”

We must keep DA to show other potential candidates that we will stick with a bad decision for the sake of continuity. So 2 more years of this junk.

THEN, we can hire a “real” HC.

THEN, we will be back to mediocre in a year or two.

THEN, we will gradually improve from there.

10 and THEN in full effect.

Crazy wanting to keep a guy who stunk up the place, even in light of better candidates being available. This blind devotion to Dennis Allen is amazing. I wonder if these same cats were begging for Joe Bugel to be retained like this.

Pryors receivers dropped 25% of the balls that hit their hands yesterday.

Yet all anyone can do is blame the QB. SMH.

I dont know why I expect better out of the semis. The WRs let Palmer down also and he was the one who took the blame as well.

Get us a DE, a WR, and a CB and this will be a much better team.
