Previewing today’s Raiders vs. Chargers game

By Jon Becker
Sunday, December 30th, 2012 at 11:28 am in Oakland Raiders.

Terrelle Pryor’s first NFL start will almost assuredly be Chargers coach Norv Turner’s final game in San Diego. Here’s a look at how things are shaping up for the Raiders in their final game of 2012:

    he’s a heck of prospect. but he’s the #29 rated qb, with 27 turnovers. a classic example of a qb getting over-hyped. he has done some good things. but he has NOT had a great year.

    this is like trying to teach a special education class how to do calculus.

    qb’s HELP teams win. so do RB’s, coaches, defenses, kickers, etc. they are important. but they don’t win or lose. TEAMS win or lose. seriously. ur making fools of urselves.

    >> QB leads the team. leaders get the credit and the blame. thats called LIFE dr.rob, you may have noticed that in the working world as well, or maybe not. QBS are the manager and direct the whole offense and affect the defense as well. managers get the credit and the blame. grow up Dr. Rob.

    no pathetic moron. head coaches lead the team and THEY get credit for wins and losses. qb’s get credit for yardage and td’s and int’s. look up their stats. u won’t see wins and losses next to their name ANYWHERE. are u a first year fan or something?

    Passer rating
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    Passer rating (known as passing efficiency or pass efficiency in NCAA football) is a measure of the performance of quarterbacks or any other passers in American football and Canadian football. There are at least two formulae currently in use: one officially used by the National Football League and the Canadian Football League, and one used in college football. Passer rating is calculated using each quarterback’s completion percentage, passing yardage, touchdowns and interceptions.
    A perfect passer rating in the NFL is 158.3. A perfect passing efficiency in college football is 1261.6.

    [edit]History

    The NFL’s complex passer rating was devised in 1971 by a special committee headed by Don Smith, an executive at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.[1][2] Don Weiss created the passer rating.[2] Prior to that, the NFL had struggled with how to crown a passing ranking using multiple statistics.[1]
    [edit]NFL & CFL

    The calculation of the NFL (and CFL) passer rating involves more steps than the NCAA formula. In order to establish a maximum value for an NFL player’s passer rating, a separate calculation needs to be completed involving each of the following four categories: Completion Percentage, Average Yards Per Attempt, Percentage of Touchdown Passes, and Percentage of Interceptions. If the result in any category is less than 0, the given result should be 0. If the result in any category is greater than 2.375, the given result should be 2.375. This makes the maximum possible quarterback rating for the NFL 158.3. A perfect rating requires at least a 77.5% completion rate, at least 12.5 yards per attempt, a touchdown on at least 11.875% of attempts, and no interceptions.[3]
    The four separate calculations can be expressed in the following equations:

    where
    ATT = Number of passing attempts
    COMP = Number of completions
    YARDS = Passing yards
    TD = Touchdown passes
    INT = Interceptions
    Then, the above calculations are used to complete the passer rating:

    where
    [edit]NCAA

    Passer rating, known formally in college football as passing efficiency or pass efficiency, is based on player performances. The NCAA passing efficiency formula is far simpler[4] than the NFL formula, as it lacks limits on the four components:

    The NCAA passer rating has an upper limit of 1,261.6 (every attempt is a 99-yard completion for touchdown), and a lower limit of -731.6 (every attempt is completed, but results in a 99-yard loss). A passer who throws only interceptions will have a -200 rating, as would a passer who only throws completed passes losing an average of 35.714 yards.
    [edit]Value and Limitations

    As mentioned, both the NFL and NCAA passer rating formulae are only based on completion percentage, passing yardage, touchdowns, and interceptions. As the NFL notes, “It is important to remember that the system is used to rate passers, not quarterbacks. Statistics do not reflect leadership, play-calling, and other intangible factors that go into making a successful professional quarterback.”[3] For example, it does not factor in rushing yards gained by such quarterbacks as Randall Cunningham, Steve Young, Michael Vick, and John Elway who were also known for their running ability. Nor does it measure a quarterback’s win-loss record, how many times he has fumbled or been sacked, or evaluate his leadership and performance during crucial situations such as third-down efficiency or fourth-quarter scoring drives.
    In 2011, the American sports network ESPN developed an alternative statistic called the total quarterback rating which purports to more accurately measure quarterbacks’ contribution to their teams’ winning.[5]
    After ESPN’s unveiling of total quarterback rating, CNNSI.com published an article by Kerry Byrne of Cold Hard Football Facts highlighting the importance of passer rating in determining a team’s success.[6] “Put most simply,” the article states, “you cannot be a smart football analyst and dismiss passer rating. In fact, it’s impossible to look at the incredible correlation of victory to passer rating and then dismiss it. You might as well dismiss the score of a game when determining a winner. [...] Few, if any, are more indicative of wins and losses than passer rating. Teams that posted a higher passer rating went 203-53 (.793) in 2010 and an incredible 151-29 (.839) after Week 5.” Byrne made an expanded defense of the passer rating and its importance for the Pro Football Researchers Association in 2012.[7] The study noted that of the eight teams since 1940 to lead the league in both offensive passer rating and defensive passer rating, all won championships.[8]
    [edit]Records

    [edit]NFL
    Aaron Rodgers holds the NFL record for the highest career passer rating for any player with at least 1,500 attempts, with a current mark of 104.1.[9] In 2011 Rodgers also set the record for highest passer rating in a single season with a 122.5 rating.[10] In 2012, Robert Griffin III posted a mark of 158.3, the highest single game passer rating by a rookie.[11] Wide receiver Antwaan Randle El, with a passer rating of 157.5 from 21 completed passes of a possible 26, has the highest career rating of any non-QB with more than twenty attempts.[12] Peyton Manning holds the record for the most games with a perfect passer rating (4). As of 2012, 61 NFL quarterbacks have completed a game with a perfect passer rating of 158.3, and seven have done so multiple times. Phil Simms holds the Super Bowl record for the highest passer rating, game, at 150.92 in Super Bowl XXI. Ben Roethlisberger holds the Super Bowl record for the lowest passer rating to win game, at 22.6 in Super Bowl XL.
    [edit]NCAA
    In Division I FBS (formerly Division I-A), the career record for passing efficiency is held by Sam Bradford of Oklahoma, who had a career mark of 175.6 between 2007 and 2009.[13] The single-season record belongs to Russell Wilson of the Wisconsin Badgers, who achieved a passer rating of 191.8 over the 2011 season, while the freshman record belongs to Michael Vick of Virginia Tech, whose rating during the 1999 season was 180.4.[citation needed]

    Norv Turner is in an interesting position here. He can help dictate Pryor’s fate. If he knew he wasn’t going to be fired and still loyal to the Chargers, he could have his time make Pryor look good. Then the Raiders would be saddled with a development anchor.

    On the other hand, he’s one of a small group of OC candidates for the Raiders. So if he’s thinking that way, and he sees what any good football mind about Pryor’s lack of potential, he’ll have his guys play to make him look bad. Lots of movement and baiting.

    I think this is more from fallout from other sports that like to pin W-L on certain positions. Like baseball does with pitchers and hockey does with goalies. The American sports fan is just used to seeing this pinned on certain players in a culure that seems to need to always find one person to hold accountable — earned or not.

    In the end, it’s just one of many stats, none of which give more than a fraction of the picture. Anyone that relies solely on one, or even a small subset of stats, is equally small minded and unable to see the big picture of cause and effect in the complex ecosystem of football.

    I am looking forward to see Pryor play today. Not because I think he will light it up or anything like that, but because we will get to see if he is worth keeping around or not. And that will also give us some direction on where to go in the offseason with the QB position. It is the most important position after all, right?

    If nothing else, this is an exciting game to watch simply for that reason. We all know it is a meaningless game, there’s nothing at stake, and we all know what the fate of Norv Turner will be. The only thing in question might be the jobs of DA, Knapp, and Tarver, but I think deep down we know more than likely DA will be retained. So really Knapp and Tarver are the only ones that might be gone after today.

    I do think however, that there will be a much bigger and better HC candidate pool this offseason than last season. So it might be in our best interest to take a serious look at the candidates before we let DA go, and then go after a proven HC. I say hold on to DA until we find one in case the ones we like don’t want to come here. The worst thing we can do is let DA go, and then end up with someone worse.

    Knapp should be let go right away though. Tarver is borderline, but Hoffman needs to go asap too. This was a wasted season.

    =====

    There’s going to be a much bigger pool but there’s also going to be a lot more teams dipping into it. The pool is bigger because many are looking like they’ll get sacked in the next couple days. Some will be recycled this season, some will go back to coordinator roles, while some ex-HCs will be getting second or third shots.

    In the end, even if the Raiders did want to replace DA, they’d have to get in line behind several currently more attractive places for the best HC candidates to look at.

    Funny how at the end of the season game, it is a Part 2 of the Toilet Bowl!

    Brad Johnson’s Super Bowl year was pretty damn impressive.

    22 TD’s to 6 INT’s, Pro Bowl, #3 in QBR, #5 in completion %, Super Bowl win.

    Arguably one of the greatest single-season resumes in NFL QB history.

    nope.

    unless u count jim mcmahon, doug williams, jeff hostetler, mark rypien, brad johnson, and trent dilfer as great.

    —————————-

    Ok, I’ll modify that statement, your best odds of winning a SB in the modern era where passing dictates everything, you need a great QB.

    Brad Johnson was the last mediocre QB to win a SB where The old philosophy was Great Defense, great running game, and a QB who didn’t screw things up.

    Since 2002, Brady, Big Ben, manning brothers, Rodgers and Brady, have won all the SB’s and it has been via the Air to win it all.

    Also Im hearing through an insider on Preimium that DA will be safe UNLESS JON GRUDEN wants the job. Yep Jon Grudens name is still out there. Bottom line if Jon Gruden really wanted th RAider job.. he will be HC next year

    =====

    That actually wasn’t a curve ball. I remember Rick Reuschel well since he pitched several years with the Giants. “Big Daddy” was the master of changing speeds on his fastball/sinker. A lot of his pitches had that late dip. His “fastest” pitch was something in the mid 80’s, but it made guys look like they were trying to catch up to a Nolan Ryan fastball after seeing a mix of his change ups all game :-)
