Raiders inactives vs. Chargers
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, December 30th, 2012 at 12:07 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Players listed as inactives today vs. Chargers:
QB Carson Palmer, RB Jeremy Stewart, S Tyvon Branch, LB Rolando McClain, RG Mike Brisiel, DE Brandon Bair, WR Juron Criner.
Tony Bergstrom will start for Brisiel at right guard, Mike Mitchell for Tyvon Branch at strong safety.
A chance for Bergstrom to put something on film as a potential starter next season and Mitchell to market himself going into free agency. A mild surprise Criner is inactive, he’s been practicing lately.
Bigger surprise _ offensive lineman Lucas Nix is active for the first time after being inactive for 15 straight games.

If DA stays, then changing the offense is not the only thing needed.
A REAL special teams coach and a solid vet DC is needed also.

i never called dilfer great. i said great teams make great qb’s. if i have to spell it our for u like a schoolgirl, a qb with good skills excels with a good team, coaches, wr’s, etc. a good qb on a bad team ends up doing worse than his skills might dictate. this is elementary stuff.
manning is great. took a playoff winning team and made them even better.
griffin is really good. made year 3 of shanahan click.

FOX’s Jay Glazer reports the Raiders are expected to make a “bunch of changes” to their offensive coaching staff as early as Sunday evening.
Glazer believes underwhelming first-year coach Dennis Allen is safe, but implied behind-the-times OC Greg Knapp is as good as gone. Knapp worked extremely hard to earn his walking papers this season, routinely failing to put his players in the best position to succeed. That was embodied by Darren McFadden, who found himself trapped in a zone-blocking scheme that played to his weaknesses and sapped his strengths. Knapp is probably lucky he wasn’t let go mid-season. ==========================
Would MD undermine his new GM by firing Allen and bringing in Gruden?
^^^^^^^^^
Sure why not?
Gruden is an immediate upgrade over DA and his crappy staff.
Gruden has a better chance of turning things around here ahead of DA, who is just a waste of time.
Season ticket sales and merchandising and marketing would shoot through the roof with the return of Chuckie Gruden also!
It’s simply and great football AND great business decision to bring Gruden back!

Josh Gordon, rookie WR in Cleveland and All-Rookie team member, was drafted as a HIGH 2nd round pick.

And we’ll still owe him $8 million.

Aex7,
you make a good point. I for one am tired of pretty much every player we have on this squad plus our coaches at this point. just saying that c.p. and t.p. may be ok till we get a bit better at other positions.
December 30th, 2012 at 12:36 pm
Again, expectations for Pryor should not be very high. What we all should be looking for is how far along he has come. We have nothing to compare to besides his college days. So this game is really more like a rehearsal for him than anything else.
And one game should not dictate how he will play in the future. Regardless if he plays balls out or if he plays like his balls were chopped off.

And the preemptive excuses continue …
Leinhart will be playing with exactly the same set of contraints. I have and continue to assert that he will outplay Pryor today given a roughly equal number of snaps. That said, if Pryor sucks out of the gate as I expect, Leinhart will end up getting more of them by game’s end, but we’ll see.
Anyway, I’m going on the line and saying that if Pryor does actually outplay Leinhart today, with the same set of contraints, then I’ll admit here that he has more potential than I currently think (which is zero) to play QB in the NFL and will state that he should be on the Raiders roster next season.
I asked all of the TP supporters to merely state that if he fails to outplay Leinhart, they will admit here that maybe he is not really that good and the team should consider moving on. Exactly one poster, GG, had the balls to take that stance. Everyone else ducked, dodged and danced around putting their rep on the line. Instead, we just get a bunch more excuses in advance.

Granted he hasn’t shown much but at least allow him to prove himself worthy or not.
He may have been in the NFL longer than those you mention but doing what? Suspended at the beginning of the season. Then to make matters worst, Oakland had no QB coach. The supposedly QB coach was too busy with his mani/pedi and wouldn’t give him nor Carson the time of day. Carson said he had little access to Hue-bris.
Probably, Carson was the only one to show him the ropes, how to film study, etc. Carson was his mentor and coach.

Yeah, the hypocrisy here is hilarious at times.
We here from the TP supporters that Palmer sucks, his stats are all garbage time, he doesn’t win games by himself and he’s the problem. It’s all on the QB.
Then when Pryor gets his shot all the excuses come out — before he’s even failed — to talk about how the team, the system, Knapp, DA, Reggie, and the white supremacists are all conspiring to hold him back.
Then we get the further spin that even if he does fail, it doesn’t mean anything in this game. But if he does even mediocre, then he is clearly the future. Gee, haven’t already made up your minds, have you? Please explain how anything that shows up in this game could change your mind about Pryor based on that combination?

Recapping my QBs predictions (get them in now boys and let’s see who was right)
—–
Assuming 50ish % of the snaps we’ll see:
Pryor:
– 5-12 passing (around 40-45%), 50-60 yards, 2 INTs
– 5-7 runs for maybe 50-60 yards, most of which will be on a single play.
– One TD scored either running or passing.
– About the same odds as a TD for one fumble on either a run or in waiting too long trying to prove he’s a pocket pass early and getting drilled.
– At least 1 each delay of game, time out wasted as the clock winds down (probably called by the coach from the sideline), several cadence related false starts, and probably zero read based adjustments of the alignment pre-snap
Leinhart:
– 9-14 passing, 115 yards, 1 INT, 1 TD
– 1 run for 2 yards
- A couple nice audibles that set up big running plays on draws
– No credit

How did we stop this train last week?
————————————
Well for one, the Saints have the worst defense in the NFL. But it does say something that the Raiders are one of only three teams to hold Carolina under 300 yards this season.
The Raiders defense has actually played pretty well at times this season. The offense just does it no favors by going 3-and-out all the time, leaving the defense on the field too much. That’s part of why the yards and points start to pile up.
If the Raiders can add another playmaker on the DL and a serious ballhawking LB, I think Tarver’s defense might be pretty good.

Alex7,
I’m no homer of Pryor but I get irritated when only one side is presented. It had to do with his time in the NFL. He was essentially out of football for the past 2 years, unless you can call it playing time.
If has is bad, then let’s look to pickup a project in the coming draft. If he is okay, then let’s get help elsewhere on the team because we need all the help we can get. This is all about getting the most out the draft to build a team.

– No credit
——
***************
i’ll say pryor does this:
8-17 95 yards 1 int
8 rushes 65 yards 1 td 1 fumble

By the way, Pryor has one advantage that he won’t ever have again. There’s virtually no tape of him playing with the starting offense in a real game right now. The Chargers are going to be the first team to see what his actual package of plays are that he is capable of. They won’t have the advantage of studying what they do from each of the 3 or 4 formations he’s able to run and understanding what his options are on each.
There’s a reason that Cam came out with amazing numbers in his first couple of games and then tapered off. The same reason he started this season slow. Same is starting to show up for Kaep in SF. Gimmicky offenses are great to catch a team off guard, but this is the NFL. College level offenses don’t fly for long for a reason, because they don’t have the complexity to keep very technical NFL defenses off balance once they know what to expect.
If Pryor can’t succeed with this scenario (much like Cam did), then it’s only going to get much, much harder for him once teams have footage to scheme around.
December 30th, 2012 at 1:12 pm
lol
forgot Pryor scored a 7 on the wonderlic.
Explains his inability to read legit D’s at OSU and in NFL practices.
RGIII scored a 24, Newton a 21, Fitzpatrick in Buff a 40-something (allowed a 7th-round talent to start in the NFL, good for him).

Passing puts people in the seats. Us grandpas had the benefit/privilege of seeing the AFL/NFL merger, and the Raiders/Steelers mix of black and blue in the trenches battles and incredible passing games.
Today? Too much money placed on passing QBs, and ownerships that do not include Al Davis.
West coast offense? boring…

He likely won’t do another press conference till after the draft.
