Breaking news: Raiders fire off. coord. Knapp, three other coaches

Share

The Raiders on Monday fired offensive coordinator Greg Knapp in response to a drastic drop in production.
A person familiar with the situation confirmed the news.
The Raiders also fired offensive line coach Frank Pollack, special teams coordinator Steve Hoffman and linebackers coach Johnny Holland, the team announced.
“Decisions like this are very difficult,” Raiders coach Dennis Allen said in a press release. “I have a great deal of respect for all of these men and I appreciate their contributions to the Oakland Raiders this season.”
Allen will speak with the media in the next several minutes. More on that later.
In particular, running back Darren McFadden’s yards per carry dropped from 5.4 in 2011 to 3.3 this season. He averaged 5.2 in 2010, as well.
There was a slight increase in passing yardage this season, with the Raiders jumping from 11th in 2011 under Hue Jackson to eighth this season. The passer rating of the quarterbacks also surged from 79.4 to 82.4.
Beyond that, the Raiders endured noticeable drop-offs in yards per game, points per game, rushing yards per game and rushing touchdowns.
The Raiders dipped from seventh in the league in rushing in 2011 to 28th this season, with a drop of more than 43 yards per game. They also tied for the fewest rushing touchdowns (4) after tying for seventh with 16 in 2011.
Allen hired Knapp and Pollack with the understanding that the Raiders would switch to the zone-blocking scheme favored by Knapp and Pollack.
McFadden and the offensive line struggled in the new scheme, though Allen and Knapp remained steadfast in their support of the change.
Knapp pleaded patience, saying it takes time for the scheme to take hold. McFadden looked nothing like the player that flourished in Jackson’s scheme, and his frustration surfaced toward the end of the season.

Here is a comparison of how the Raiders offense fared in 2011 and 2012:

Yards per game
2012: 18th at 344
2011: 9th at 379.5

Points per game
2012: 26th at 18.1
2011: 16th at 22.4

Passing yards per game
2012: 8th at 255.2
2011: 11th at 247.6

Passer rating
2012: 18th at 82.4
2011: 17th at 79.4

Rushing yards per game
2012: 28th at 88.8
2011: 7th at 131.9

Rushing touchdowns
2012: Tied for 31st with four
2011: Tied for seventh with 16

Rushing yards per carry
2012: Tied for 23rd at 3.8
2011: Tied for 7th at 4.5

    I really hope Norv Turner is hired and this is why:

    1.- He uses all and i mean all the players in offense wr’s te’s rb’s fb’s
    2.- His offense might no be as explosive as hue’s but he is vertical and very creative with his rb’s not to mention with Te’s
    3.- Palmer-Turner combo is as good as it gets.
    4.- Not Sean Payton but very unpredictable play caller

    Regarding Pryor, he still plays scared. Guy is too worried about the rush than reading the secondary. Too many lofts on his back foot. When he does step up he throws well. He just doesn’t look comfortable in teh Pocket.

    Pryor is like Bruce Gradkowski, moves the ball but doesn’t look good doing it.

    He was jittery in the pocket, and was looking more at the Oline than for his WR’s. He looked far more comfortable when the plays broke down and he could scramble for time.

    What bothers me about the firing of Knapp and Hoffman is, why didn’t Reggie see this before he hired these guys. The majority of us (except Reggie’s blind followers) knew our offense and special teams did not need a major change and knew Knapp an Hoffman were a disaster waiting to happen. How did Reggie miss this. I would like to see him explain his logic.

    I’ll admit that installing a college level offense for a college level quarterback would be a great idea….

    If the Raiders played NCAA football.

    That’s the reason that out of HUNDREDS of NCAA quarterbacks only a very few make it to the NFL and succeed over a long period of time.

    Defenses are much faster and more sophisticated in the NFL. College gimmicks do not work long term.
    =============

    than please explain how rgIII kappy and wilson are in the playoffs with these offenses?

    They are pro ofenses that have had option added to them.

    you still dont know what you are looking at do you?

    Also you are speaking as if you have watched them all year and you have not?

    seattle ran more zone read yetserday than they have almost all year and wilson scored a td to win on that play. So di rgiII score on it yesterday.

    It sint the zone read play per se, it is also the formation and play design, pistol shotgun spread.

    It isnt just zone read, but also triple option in washington.

    We saw it on the first play of the game with pryor the ghost reverse motion behind him and dmac up the gut!!

    Norv turner would be the best fit as oc more than whisenhunt, He likes to go vertical which is what our recevers do best, he works well with a stationary qb he’ll do wonders with palmer, he can coach a dominate run game (ladanian) I think he could get the most outta Dmac, he gets along with tarver so he wpuldnt be completly foreign to coaching staff… I like the idea of norv as oc the most.

    Let a coach develope him and watch out. The kid wants to learn bad and get better. If u can develope him then look out.

    You wont find a qb in this draft in that mold. Raiders dont even need to go anywhere near STATUESQUE quarterback espeically behind this OLINE

    Quote from Bill Williamson;

    http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest

    Pryor prove himself? I really liked what I saw from Terrelle Pryor on Sunday. He showed leadership, poise and heart.

    He is not a finished product, but I think there is something Oakland can work with. There are a lot of young, dynamic quarterbacks in this league. I think Oakland had to make developing Pryor quickly a priority. Carson Palmer is 33, expensive, and not improving.

    If Pryor makes big strides in the offseason, I don’t think it would be a terrible idea for Oakland to consider handing him the starting job. This team will be still rebuilding for the next couple of years. Might as well give the kid a chance.

    ==============================================

    There is the problem right there. Coaches don’t have time to develop players any more. That went out 10 years ago. Guys have to come into the league ready to play. Look at Luck, RGIII, Russell Wilson and Andy Dalton. Matt Ryan. These guys came in ready to play. Luke Keuchly, Alton Smith. Guys come in ready to play. The problem with Al Davis is Davis would hand his coaching staffs TONS of projects: DHB, Jamarcus, Ausberry, Richard Gordon, Veldheer, Pryor, the list goes on and on. And very few of those guys ever develop and they hold the entire team back.

    Stevie Wonder can see that the young man Pryor HAS IT!

    Sure he made a few bad reads and some misfires but overall he did a fine job.The guy is a LEADER.You could see that when he went in the middle of the scrum between Goodson and Spikes.That’s what soldier’s do!! They take charge of their post!!! I like his attitude towards the game and this team. Cmon IDIOT Coach and GM give this guy a chance next year.During the offseason put in some Pryor packages the way the Niners did Kaepernick.If Carson keeps doing his Tony Romo impersonations at critical times, put Terrelle in!

    =====

    Stevie Wonder can also read a defense better, and likely has a stronger, more accurate arm.

    Pryor must listen to one of Stevie’s hits, “I Wish”, because that’s what he does everytime he floats one up in the air and has to wait 4 seconds to see who ends up catching it.

    In the first half Ohio State, and Pryor, dominated Arkansas like no other opponent did all season (and remember, the Hogs’ two losses came from national champion Auburn and defending national champ Alabama), opening up a 28-7 lead until four seconds before intermission. In the second half the Razorbacks, and Ryan, had their way with the Buckeyes, closing to within five points of pulling off one of the most spectacular finishes in Sugar Bowl history.

    Pryor got the Buckeyes off to a roaring start, passing for 203 yards and two touchdowns, and rushing for 52 more as Ohio State took complete control of the game.
