Raiders re-sign six players

The Raiders re-signed tight end Mickey Shuler, offensive lineman Jason Slowey, guard Jason Foster, linebacker Jerrell Harris, wide receiver Travionte Session and defensive back Akwasi Owusu-Ansah.
Those six players finished the season on the Raiders practice squad. Therefore, their contracts expired. The Raiders re-signed them Wednesday to what’s known as reserve/future contracts.
Here’s some background info on the six players:

Foster was signed to Oakland’s practice squad on Oct. 31. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound offensive lineman originally signed with the Indianapolis Colts as a non-drafted rookie free agent out of Rhode Island in 2012.

Harris, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound linebacker, was signed to the Raiders’ practice squad on Nov. 28. Harris originally signed with the Atlanta Falcons as a non-drafted rookie free agent out of Alabama in 2012, and spent time on the practice squad with both Jacksonville and New England before joining the Raiders.

Owusu-Ansah was initially signed to the Raiders’ practice squad on Sept. 19, and rejoined the Silver and Black on Dec. 10. A 6-foot-1, 205-pound defensive back, Owusu-Ansah played in 10 games with the Dallas Cowboys from 2010-11, registering 28 kick returns for 599 yards. He was originally selected by the Cowboys in the fourth round (126th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Session signed with the Raiders as a non-drafted rookie free agent out of Nevada in 2012. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound receiver spent training camp with the Silver and Black and was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 1.

Shuler was signed to Oakland’s practice squad on Oct. 16. The 6-foot-4, 251-pound tight end played in six games with the Miami Dolphins in 2010, totaling two receptions for 44 yards. Shuler also spent time with Minnesota in 2010 and 2011 after entering the league as the Vikings’ seventh-round draft pick (214th overall) out of Penn State.

Slowey joined the Silver and Black’s practice squad on Oct. 23 after spending training camp with the San Francisco 49ers. He was originally selected by the 49ers in the sixth round (199th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Western Oregon.

As strange as it sounds, I could see Dan Reeves being brought in..

He was interested in being on Gaileys staff in 2010..

    Just saying..

Also wouldnt surprise me if Gailey is brought in as OC now that I see him and DA are both from the Reeves coaching tree.

    ====================

Reeves would be 69 in 10 days…. i dont quite know about that one..but the coaching tree makes sense.

    —-

How old is Al Saunders? 65?..

Reeves could be a help in some capacity..

    =========

Agree. DA could use a trusted mentor in some capacity….thats one name I havent heard since the Zocor commercials…

those dirty birds might fly again!!!

Phil McCracken is another name to watch for concerning the Raiders OC vacancy.

One mean artist. He could really BUILD an offensive wall.

    Dan Reeves?

    Come on now!

  • DennisAllensVisor

I imagine its hard to hire coordinators right now, with so many Head Coaches trying to put together staffs just in case they are hired..

But im sure some Raider fans will just blame it on Reggie & DA.. LOL

Is it that unrealistic that Dennis Allen would hire his mentor, who happens to still want to be involved with football..

Those who want Norv must be out of their minds. I loved watching Norv destroy SD over the years after he sucked as our HC in oakland.

Who the hell would want his sorry @ass back w the Raiders?

Not unrealistic at all..Ray Anderson was rumored to be on Mark Davis list to join as team President. (current NFL VP)

It is not unrealistic that he might hire him…..it would simply be mistake #2 in offensive coordinator hirings.

Jezuz Cripes…..someone needs to smash the flux capacitor before DA travels back in time to hire some dude from the 1980s!

  • J Hill

    Deuce,

It will absolutely be on Reggie and DA for the OC hire.

Should be easier wih the early start.

Losing out on OCs to HC gigs I can understand. But losing out to other teams for the same OC title?

    Shouldn’t happen.

I am trying to figure that out too. His offenses has been underachieving since he left Dal in 1993, and he’s had some pretty good talent too.

A team with Rivers/Tomlinson in their prime and sproles/tolbert/jackson/gates/floyd/chambers doesn’t win a SB??

    OC Candidates.

Have to say not a lot of candidates stand out from around the League, but a few names might be worth cheking out.

Atlanta’s OL Coach and former Fresno State HC Pat Hill, he’s older at 65 I think, but is well respected.

San Francisco’s QB Coach Geep Chryst, another older guy in his 60’s and hasn’t called plays in years, but his work with Alex Smith and Kapernick is intriguing but you always have to winder how much of it was Harbaugh.

Chicago Bears QB Coach Jeremy Bates, he’s young at 36 and his star has dwindled afer a failed 1 year stiny at Seattle but he was considered a rising star in coaching just a couple of years ago, a Gruden and Shanahan disciple.

Indianapolis QB Coach Clyde Christensen, at 56 he’s been in Indy in different capacities for over a decade, worked with Manning as OC, Luck as QB Coach and Marvin Harrison-Reggie Wayne as WR Coach.

I think each of those guys is worth an interview in case they’re interested in the job, Jeremy Bates would be my first interview, followed by Christensen.

  • Follow the B@uceman

    J…..does it matter….allen still hc…were fked

  • Dakota

I like the thought of Whisenhunt as OC, but he will always be looking for that next HC shot…..so I guess he could try and Hue Jax Dennis Allen next year…..that might work out for the best! But I don’t think he would give us the time of day…..he might be back with Pitt if they dump Haley off on someone.

Norv and Gailey should have that out of their systems by now…..I would rather have Norv out of those two. But experienced guys will probably look for better opportunities on good teams.

For OC I think we will end up with a young assistant o-line coach, or TE coach, or RB coach or WR coach who is currently with the Broncos, Atlanta or NO, or from some team that has a good offense going right now.

I just hope Dennis Allen can get it right this time. My faith in him has hit rock bottom.

Yea, when he is calling the plays and designing the offense from the ground up. Pretty much. Why on earth wouldn’t it, pray tell?
