Brown, Sapp among finalists for HOF voting

By Steve Corkran
Friday, January 11th, 2013 at 3:02 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders wide receiver Tim Brown and defensive lineman Warren Sapp are among the 15 modern-era finalists in voting for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Sapp is among the four first-year-eligible nominees. Brown made the cut for the final 15 last year before being bypassed.
The 15 modern-era finalists were determined by a vote of the Hall’s Selection Committee from a list of 127 nominees that earlier was reduced to a list of 27 semifinalists, during the multi-step, year-long selection process.
Curley Culp and Dave Robinson were selected as senior candidates by the Hall of Fame’s Seniors Committee. The Seniors Committee reviews the qualifications of those players whose careers took place more than 25 years ago.
The final vote takes place the day before the Super Bowl, with anywhere from four to seven players being selected for induction in early August.
Brown played for the Raiders from 1988-2003 and concluded his NFL career with the Buccaneers in 2004. This is the fourth year he has been on the ballot.
Here is Brown’s bio:

From Rotoworld.com via the Cleveland paper…

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that new Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski “is set” to hire Norv Turner as his offensive coordinator.
Chud is actually a Turner disciple, having worked beneath him for several years in San Diego. It’s also believed that Mel Tucker may follow the two from Jacksonville to run the Browns’ defense. Turner will return from a vacation on Saturday, at which point the Browns are expected to schedule a press conference. Chudzinski will be in charge of all personnel decisions in Cleveland, so he will likely leave playcalling duties up to Turner.

DJ,don’t judge the whole Nation by the big mouthed haters on here.

GG-why do you refuse to acknowledge the HC will make the hire and not the GM as stated by the GM himself?

  • ProRaider

#252 if I may. Trust. Do you really feel Reggie has enough trust in DA to allow him to hire his own OC? Just cuz he says one thing doesn’t mean it’s so.

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

I reckon ProRaider might be onto something if you look at the case of Terrelle Pryor.

Reggie (on behest of Mark) came out after Saints game and said he wants to see Pryor in extended action in order to properly evaluate him. Allen did very little. Wasted two weeks ‘teaching him how to dress’ and even the week of the chargers game said Leinart was the starter and Pryor wasn’t back-up ready. He did a complete about-face 24 hrs later.

That’s very insightful imo, like ProRaider intimated.

I posted a few days ago a similar thought…that Reggie fired quickly Knapp, Hoffman, Holland, Pollack. Day or two after Chargers game. No way Reggie would’ve been able to do a FULL season evaluation of the entire football department, including all the coaches/players, in such a two-three day span.

So, Allen could STILL be on the hot-seat. Him at Senior Bowl is no indication. We need a HC to qualify to coach there. And Al’s done it in the past, firing coaches after the senior bowl, keeping them hired to glean info.

I personally think Allen is returning, but I think there’s a possibility reggie could still fire Allen.

But i do believe reggie has been evaluating all this time and probably has pre-determined an OC from the packers coaching staff. Which imo is not very good. Gotta interview, compare plans/ideas, drum up some competition/leverage for the Raiders OC position, and due diligence not just hire 1 person from 1 interview like Davis did with Reggie…which we all think was noobish.

Sent an email off to ProFootballTalk, specifically, Florio.

He’s pretty good at getting back to you if you email the PFT peeps and direct the note to Florio.

    Was surprised.

Been trading emails sporadically since PFT broke Moss to the Raiders back in the day.

    =======

Thanks! Thumbs up. Will be keen to hear back what you get from him.

    GG

You bring up a good point.

I have zero confidence in Mark Davis. If the Raiders continue to flounder — badly — blame McKenzie and DA all you guys want.

I will be pointing the finger at who is truly to blame for the mess — Mark Davis.

  • jackasspuria

    GG

Of course, Florio was adamant to me in emails Lechler was going to be cut because he openly supported Cable when the Cable Guy was axed.

Florio said sources told him Lechler was good as gone because he pissed off Al so badly with those supporting comments about Tom.

  • lefty12

    Unbelievable.As Popeye says”I’ve had all I can stand,I can’t stands no more”.

  • ProRaider

GG. Quite true. Reggie was done evaluating by the time the SD game was over. Wasted no time. He probably is giving a little more time with Allen, but will wait til after the senior bowl. Doesn’t look good. If we had an OC by now, I wouldn’t be concerned for Allen. But I’m starting to think there is mutual lack of trust between Allen and Reggie.

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

I just dont think other people here should get frustrated with people like myself or ProRaider wanting to analyze stuff, read between the lines, and come up with possible scenarios of what might be happening.

None of us are pretending to be insiders etc. We’re just speculating, adding food for thought during this long period of no news etc. And objectively, it has been intelligent points being made by people on both sides of the debate. Not stupid trolling.

Anything is possible, but the chances of Tits getting canned now are extremely remote.

Reggie most likely would have fired him along with Krapp and Hoffman if that was his intention. Would have cleaned house in one fell swoop.

Nope, sorry to say Tits will almost certainly return in 2013.

That’s unfortunate, because if there was ever a HC that deserved and needed to be fired – it’s smiling titty boy.

    Also tweeted Ian Rapport (NFLN).

Both him and Williamson asked if they’ve heard any word whatsoever of the Raiders interviewing or requesting an interview with a coach for the OC job, or if there are even any rumors of a targeted coach still in the playoffs.

Doubt they’ll directly respond to me. No one ever does on Twitter :( lol

No news is not good news. Something’s brewing. And it’s going to be ugly. Break ups always are. It’s not out of the realm of thinking to wonder what’s going on. Won’t come as a surprise to see Reggie can DA, or Mark canning Reggie. The silence is not golden, but instead is the calm before the storm.

DJ,don’t judge the whole Nation by the big mouthed haters on here.

I don’t Lefty. I guess I see things a little different than what alot of fans are seeing… we all have our own take on almost everything.

I look at what the Bears are doing with a lesser QB like Cutler and I think we should be doing the same thing. Forget if u think Palmer sucks, for the amount of $ they’re paying him and what we gave up wouldn’t you think they would want to give him every chance in the world to get something out of that investment?

Giving him an UDFA rookie who caught 19 passes in college and a 5th rd. draft choice in DMoore IS NOT doing it.

Cutler isn’t happy with his QB coach so they snap up Bates from Denver. Cutler doesn’t like Martz so they can him and bring in Tice. Now there’s talk that Cutler will be in on the decision process for the HC gig. They say absolutely at the least they intend on consulting Cutler and want him and the new coach to meet before they hire him. Cutler wants his old all pro buddy from Denver? No prob…we’ll go get Marshall for you.

Palmer will probably have to log on to the blog to find out who OUR new OC is.

Of course I don’t know that to be the case, i’m just sayin’.

He’s got nothing where we sit right now.

Vic tafuar already tweeted this morning answering the same question from fans.

    Its quiet. NO RUMORS.. NOthin

btw I’d be in favor of trading Palmer to Jets.. see what u could get and what not. If reggie makes a play for a GB OC.. go after Flynn if u can.. if not draft qb to compete with pryor.

its a rebuilding team anyway. 2014 Draft is stacked per NFL Draft insiders way more then 2013. I know fans dont wanna hear it, but Reggie is building for the futures.. ya he wants to compete but who knows he may be suprised with wins this year.

Kinda like the Oakland Athletics or Warriors.

    —————–
I can only see three scenarios.

1). There us something brewing behind the scenes with a coach still in the playoffs.
2). They are throwing all their eggs in hiring a playoff coach, without any guarantee.
3). Reggie and DA are using #2 and using Saunders as a back up plan
4). Reggie and DA are struggling understanding the hiring process and can’t agree on a strategy.

I think #3. If anything but #1 it would be very disappointing. At this point their is no harm in bringing in coaches to interview.

  • rudegruden

    Sorry 4 scenarios…

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

  • ProRaider

GG. Thanks. Here’s another thought that just popped into my head. The “it’s been quiet, no word what so ever” reply to you tells me this: Reggie’s packing his bags. He may even be gone. And DA is bolting right after the senior bowl. And Mark is left holding the bag of a whole lot of nothing.

Either these guys, Reggie, DA and Mark are extremely clueless and don’t know how to go about finding coaches, after all, look at Reggie running home to Green Bay every time we need a scrub and DAs hiring of knapp, or, they’ve all packed their bags and flew the coop.

My buddy who is a Jets fan, says he’s heard the Jets are very interested in getting Cam Cameron on board.

He, however, would like Hubris to come to NY. He’d like to see Palmer and DMC dealt to the Jets.

Pipe dream I told him. But, if Hubris did land with the Jets, you never know…

Now that would be an interesting to see what we could get in return.

It would free up a ton of money.

  • ProRaider

Here are the possible variations of a search for a OC are playing out:

    1. Reggie and DA are clueless and the lack of trust between the two complicates matters. They have no understanding of the protocol.

    2. Reggie is waiting to see if DA embarrasses himself at the senior bowl before he decides weather to retain him or not.

    3. Reggie already has Gruden on board and is just waiting for the senior bowl game to be over and then fires Allen.

    4. Reggie has secretly packed his bags and has moved on.

    5. The calm before the storm. Something is festering big time. Again, no news is not good news.

    6. The frustration of the season is still weighing heavy on Reggie and he can’t get past it. Not sure if finding a OC is a priority right now.

    7. Reggie is banking on the entire Packer staff coming to Oakland (absurd, but so was the hiring of DA and the approval of knapp).

    8. There is a power struggle going on. Think about it. Why no word on possible coaches to replace the ones that were fired. And, did DA have Reggie’s blessing to fire knapp, or was DA goin HueJax on the Raiders?

    9. Maybe their taking the ‘better keep silent and appear dumb than to speak and remove all doubt’ approach.

Just some food for thought gents.

  • bcz24

I don’t think he did this because he is gay though. He could have simply used his faith to explain why he didn’t have a gf (like Tebow) if he were trying to cover being a homo. It was a publicity grab.

    *********

Wouldn’t this be reverse discrimination though? Draft the gay guy. Solidify the LBGT fan base? I hate to admit it, but I don’t know if I want him as a Raider. And not so much because he’s gay, it’s his mental makeup. We need stable people as the backbone of the new generation.

  • guest123

Using faith as cover for being homo is so weak. I have a lot of admiration for priests and men who are in semenary for what they are doing with their lives. I think it’s counter to natural instincts to be celibate. Straight or homo, it’s impossible to deny those feelings. I think it’s actually harmful to try. But to hide behind the cross instead of come out is really pathetic stuff and reflects poorly on the church and all it stands for.
