Raiders interview Martz for off. coord. vacancy

The Raiders interviewed Mike Martz for their offensive coordinator vacancy in an attempt to find an upgrade over the fired Greg Knapp, a person familiar with the situation said.
They also spoke with Juan Castillo about the prospect of taking over for fired offensive line coach Frank Pollack.
To this point, the Raiders have not released any information about their search for replacements for Knapp, Pollack, special teams coordinator Steve Hoffman and linebackers coach Johnny Holland.
All four were fired the day after the Raiders completed a 4-12 season, their 10th straight season without a winning record.
Martz last worked in the league as the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator in 2011. He was fired after a two-year stint. He was the 49ers offensive coordinator in 2008 and served in the same capacity for the Detroit Lions in 2006-07.
Raiders coach Dennis Allen said in his year-end news conference that he isn’t in a hurry to find an offensive coordinator.
“I don’t have a time frame for getting somebody in,” Allen said. “I want to make sure we get the right guy, and however long that takes for us to get the right guy, that’s how long that that takes.”
Allen also said he isn’t averse to working with an offensive coordinator that has experience as a head coach. Martz coached the Rams from 2000-05 and solidified his reputation as a guy that can get the most out of his offense.
“I’ll be comfortable with a guy I feel like gives us the best chance to be successful in all areas,” Allen said.
Under Knapp this season, the Raiders struggled establishing a consistent running attack and scoring points.
Pollack and Knapp came under fire for their implementation of the zone-blocking scheme upon their arrival last offseason.
Castillo was the Eagles offensive line coach for 13 seasons before then-coach Andy Reid promoted him to defensive coordinator before the 2011 season. The move backfired and resulted in the Eagles firing Castillo in October of this season.

what’s the point of making an argument that has no way of being validated?

AN NFL GM SAID THE RAIDERS WERE LUCKY TO WIN 4 GAMES WITH OUR ROSTER.

We were 0-2 with our backup QBs.

But, heck, I’m sure he’s wrong and you’re right.

to think that Russell Wilson gets a LOSS pinned on him after breaking records Saturday just because his team blew a lead with 30 SECONDS LEFT AND 50 YARDS TO DEFEND…

is just so, so, so nonsensical.

No modern-day GM running an NFL team thinks like that.

Stop making stuff up. People blamed Carroll for going for it on 4th down and trying to ice the kicker. Bad coaching

  • mcfadden20.

All playoff teams have better receivers, all playoff teams have better Ds than us, all playoff teams had better secondary than us, and all of them had better running game than us, you can say Palmer is not equal as great as any of those qb’s but those qb’s are not head and shoulders above Palmer either, we’re good enough at QB department, Palmer is good as flacco, Dalton,Shaub, if not better ,he’s better than Minny QB too early to compare him to Wilson and Kaepernick,Griffin, that new O is the craze and Ds haven’t seen that before atleast not as much as it has seen it this year, so we’ll see if these guys can keep it up for long term when D’s start adjusting and start drafting players to stop that kinda O, so if we can upgrade our rest of our units, we can do big things, Palmer could have made the playoffs with Houston #1 Receiver Johnson, top 10 running game, average to above average D, Baltimore #1 WR Boldin, pretty good #2, GOOD RUNNING game, pretty good D, Cincy #1 Wr, and nice group of depth in receiving department, pretty good O and pretty good D, he would have made the playoffs with Minny, Above average D, beast running game, only needed to play the role of Jason Campbell and could have done it much better than him

  • alex7

I’m sure the atrocious bottom-5 defense and bottom-5 running game…

you know, those had nothing to do with losing games.

Nope. Blame it on the average 15th ranked QB.

I like the Kid Pryor. He seems alright. But the debate about him here has gone way too emotional. I hope he can improve his throwing and continue to use his fast legs.

Palmer is getting older, he’s not gonna be here forever, if TP improves I am sure he’ll get more chances to show what he can do.

As for getting him on the field to learn: The problem was that if we would have put him in there with the same record 4-12, he might have learned but how do the coaches not get burned?

Everybody I mean everyone would have said “you had Palmer why didn’t use him?”

Arguably, DA should have put him in at the Carolina. But I think DA was being too conservative to try and save his hide, until he got the message from Reggie to put him in the last game.
