More scuttlebutt on Raiders coaching vacancies

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, January 15th, 2013 at 11:40 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders still haven’t said a word about head coach Dennis Allen and general manager Reggie McKenzie interviewing candidates for their four coaching vacancies — offensive coordinator, offensive line, special teams coordinator and linebackers.
Yet, little by little word is spreading about some candidates that have interviewed or have been contacted as a means of gauging interest.
We reported Saturday that the Raiders interviewed long-time coach/offensive coordinator Mike Martz about replacing the fired Greg Knapp as the Raiders offensive coordinator and that they also spoke with Juan Castillo about his interest in taking over for fired offensive line coach Frank Pollack.
There’s also word from Pete Roussel of coachingsearch.com that the Raiders interviewed Marc Trestman and Greg Olson for the offensive coordinator job.
Trestman, of course, was the Raiders offensive coordinator when they played in the Super Bowl against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2002 season. The Raiders entered that game with the league’s top-ranked offense.
Of late, Trestman has been the coach of the Montreal Alouettes and enjoyed great success there, too. Trestman also is in the mix for the Chicago Bears head-coaching job.
Olson currently is the quarterbacks coach/assistant head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has six years’ experience as an NFL offensive coordinator — Lions, Rams and Buccaneers. He is credited for the rapid development of Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman, among other things.
Finally, Roussel says the Raiders interviewed Bruce DeHaven for their special teams coordinator vacancy. DeHaven is well regarded and currently works for the Buffalo Bills.

Jeffrey Lurie: Jon Gruden made it clear he won’t coach this year
Posted by Michael David Smith on January 17, 2013, 3:34 PM EST

There was talk this offseason that Jon Gruden could be lured to return to coaching with the Eagles. But Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie says that talk didn’t come from Gruden himself.

In fact, Lurie said today that when he reached out to Gruden, Gruden told him in no uncertain terms that he will remain ESPN’s Monday Night Football color commentator in 2013 and will not be a head coach.

“Jon made it clear that he was not coming back to the NFL this year,” Lurie said.

But while Lurie did not interview Gruden for the team’s head coaching vacancy, he did pick Gruden’s brain: Lurie confirmed that he asked Gruden’s opinion about Chip Kelly, and that Gruden told him he had attended an Oregon practice and came away impressed with the way Kelly runs his team.

Some day, Gruden may coach against Kelly in the NFL. But that day will not be in 2013. Gruden is staying in the booth.

Palmer aint losing any money. He is getting upwards of 15 million from us if he is in a jersey or not.

    —————————–

if u can find a trade partner.. either player for player trade .. or move Palmer for a 6th rd pkck. maybe 7. just clear the books on him

  • Just Fire Baby

    Janoris Jenkins?

That dude got arrested multiple times, fought with police, and kicked out of school.

Not at all a comparision to some media hoax. The only people butt-hurt about this are the media, teams could care less.

Al would have got a kick out of it.

I really think Pryor for Foles could work..

  • Raider E

Palmer’s cap hit is 4+ mil if we cut him, 17 mil if we play him.

    Do some research.

Word is Dennis Allen has been playing a lot of Tecmo Bowl and he plans on calling the plays next year. He is really excited about a play he calls Bo Jackson Off Tackle.

Would that be considered North – South Running, or east – west?

and Vic tafur said its possible Mark Davis pushed for Pryor to start and his one of his favorites arleady especially cuz his Dad used his last draft pick on him.

I dont think they move pryor without Mark Davis agreeing..and thats not to mention Reggie Mckenzie may like Pryor too.

You say yes, and don’t let them off the phone until you offered them a trade for the other 52 players on the team.

A #4 for 3rd round pick with one career start?

Come on man, that isn’t even remotely a possibility.

If they do offer us something, it will be a 3rd or 4th rounder I would guess. I would be blown away if it was a 2nd.

If we draft Geno #3 overall, it won’t be a fair fight.

The #3 overall will play, almost no matter what.

I don’t think Pryor would stand a chance though.

Geno is a polished pocket passer, that alwasy goes over much better in practice.

Among the available candidates for the OC position include Pat Shurmur, Chan Gailey, Cam Cameron, Mike Mularkey, Marty Mornhinweg, Mike Tice, Mike Martz, Greg Olsen, Pep Hamiltion and of course our very own Al Saunders!

    Who would it be?

Would not surprise me on bit if the Raiders end up promoting within the organization and go with Saunders!!

Vegas already told y’all…nobody wants to be here!!

I just dont like the Eagles fans salivating over one our Players. A raider.

Makes me think why should we let him go be good on another team? The kid is young and athletic. He could be an asset on our team.

If geno beats him out.. well son u can still be a RZ target.. go out and outjump the corner.

  • Raider E

I really think Geno is the pick. Gotta gut feeling, just like Rolando.

Hopefully this one turns out better?

    #3 pick & Pryor to Eagles for #4 pick & #36 pick.

    BOOM.

    You’re welcome Reggie.

  • dr_robert

I have said for at least a month that the raiders may need to go ahead and reach about for a top qb. I know a lot of u guys think we will be picking high next season but it’s not often I pick in the top three. There’s a lot to like about geno smith. Tons of starts. Accurate. Lots of Tds. Not many picks. Mobile. Good arm. Decent size.

I haven’t looked at all the qb’s of course. We will find out who is rising in the coming months. But I like what I’ve seen from geno. I don’t care for Barkley. I would have no issues with trading Palmer, trading or converting Pryor, and grabbing geno. Now we’ve got our qb. Proceed from there.

Just watched our last game again. No team is going to watch that and make even a 5th round offer for Pryor. Before Norv started putting in subs Pryor was 8 of 22. And the two garbage td’s were basically just that, garbage.

Pryor is here to stay. at least for one more year.

    **************************

    Tried to tell YOU PEOPLE.

Norv probably wasn’t the only one to tell us to lose their number.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That is more than likely the problem.

It was true also when Al was alive which is why Al ended up having to hire Bresnahan.
One reason for this is that potential coaches don’t see as much talent on the team as they see elsewhere.

The best thing that Geno has is great intermediate accuracy and a quick release. Also is a smart, hard-working kid (at least by WVU) accounts.

I worry about his toughness, as he wasn’t hit much, and seemed resigned to losing a lot the end of the year, would have liked to see a little more fire from him.

I think #3 is too high, due to his bust potential, but I would be completely on board with taking him #3, and then drafting another QB in the 4th or 6th round.
