McKenzie commits to McFadden in 2013

Running back Darren McFadden is a big part of the Raiders plans moving forward in 2013, general manager Reggie McKenzie said Thursday.

McKenzie, meeting with beat writers for the first time since Nov. 30, brushed aside the notion that McFadden could be moved entering the final season of his contract following a disappointing season.

“I’m confident Darren’s going to play his last season, regardless of what’s out there,’’ McKenzie said. “We have no decision to do anything with Darren.’’

McFadden gained 707 yards on 216 carries, averaging 3.3 yards per attempt, as the Raiders dropped to 28th in rushing after gaining more yards on the ground than any team in the NFL from 2010-2011.

The Raiders switched to a zone blocking systems under recently-fired offensive coordinator Greg Knapp after playing more gap and power power schemes under Hue Jackson.

While McKenzie said execution was more of an issue than scheme, he also said, “It’s obvious Darren is much better on certain types of plays. That goes without saying. That’s how you’ve got to do it.’’

McKenzie said coach Dennis Allen was closing in on hiring a new offensive coordinator, although he declined to give a time line. The Raiders have talked with former Rams head coach Mike Martz and McKenzie confirmed speaking with Norv Turner and Marc Trestman, both of whom now have other jobs.

Former Jacksonville quarterbacks coach Greg Olson has also been reported as a candidate.

The Raiders also will hire a special teams coordinator, a linebackers coach and an offensive line coach.

The staff leaves for the Senior Bowl Saturday, where they’ll coach the North team, with practices starting Monday.

McKenzie touched on several subjects in a 42-minute meeting with local writers. Some quick hits:

– Right guard Mike Brisiel had ankle surgery following the season. McKenzie said he played with the injury all season and that it hampered his performance. Khalif Barnes (triceps) also had surgery.

– McKenzie was pleased with the job coach Dennis Allen did during the season in terms of changing the culture of the locker room and practice sessions and setting expectations. He liked team morale and the way the team competed _ especially on defense _ during December following an awful November.

– The latest medical reports on Carson Palmer is good. McKenzie expects him to be ready for the offseason.

– McKenzie did not get into specific transactions, but hinted it would have been difficult to cut Rolando McClain during the season because of the salary cap. McClain is expected to be released when it’s more beneificial to the Raiders financial bottom line.

– All moves will be made with the long-term in line.

“We’re not trying to hurry up to win one or two games and mortgage the possibility of winning 10 more,” McKenzie said. “We’re just going to build it the right way and make good, sound decisions.”

– McKenzie said he considered Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o a first-round talent but is going to wait and see how his current story unfolds before forming any judgement regarding how will affect him in the draft.

– Defensive tackle Richard Seymour and punter Shane Lechler, both scheduled for unrestricted free agency, have not necessarily been written off, but McKenzie said, “Everything’s predicated on money. You get guys that are used to making a set amount and they’re premiere players and you don’t know what other teams are going to throw out from a contract standpoint.”

– Regarding the change at offensive coordiantor, McKenzie said of Allen: “I was proud the way he identified the issues and attacked them. He didn’t just continue to run this offense and make it work, keep this guy, keep this guy- he evaluated it, said okay, he stood up, and said okay, we’re going to make a change.”

The reason people are so big on Palmer is because he is the best QB we have had since Gannon. Is he the best QB we could possibly have right now? He11 no! But he is the “sure thing” for now.

Pryor is the wild card. It could be the best thing or the worst thing ever. Look at it this way, let’s say you are in a game show and you have a prize already won, like a paid vacation to the bahamas (which would be Palmer), but you have the option to trade that in for what’s behind the mystery door. Which could be either a brand new Ferrari, or a year supply of soap. (the door is obviously Pryor)

    So what would you do???

Geno doesn’t throw that great of a deep ball, but is very much like Matt Ryan in throwing a world class 20 yard out.

The TV station got the info from San Francisco P.D., so it’s reliably sourced. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the alleged attack occurred hours after last week’s victory over the Packers. The allegation couldn’t come at a worse time for the 49ers, set to travel to Atlanta for Sunday’s NFC Championship game. Crabtree has been the hottest receiver in the NFL, averaging a 7.3/109.5/1 stat line over the past six games. he investigation is not expected keep Crabtree out of the lineup for Sunday’s game.

The NFL game is very simple for a QB.

Stay healthy, avoid hits, get rid of the ball.

We had 3 exciting rookies this season all make the playoffs. The one who ran around the most, was the one who didn’t play 16 games, had offseason surgery and is on crutches currently.

Draft Geno, a true pocket passer.

Police said in a statement released Friday night that the alleged assault occurred in a city hotel room early Sunday.

There are some in hee who take exception to anything positive said about TP6. As well as their boy DA they wnat to protect them as though they have relations with them.

    =============================================

I see that in here too. I guess once a homer, always a homer for some of these cats. Truth is, I just don’t know how you look back at 2012 and feel like we’re headed in the right direction.
    ************************************
IMO Reggie is going to go down with DA, his staunch support for “His own guy” is going to cost him his job and rightly so. It really seems what’s taking so long is I think DA already has somone in mind but is waiting to have the excuse to hire him. By waiting until all more experienced and strong candidates are gone. Then he can go get his yes-man someone he can blame for everything when we stink the joint up again.

DA is an X’s and O’s type who has issues teaching IMO he is a hardliner who gets the best results by threats rather than coaching and teaching. I watched this fool scapegoat and doghouse players and then throw his boy under the bus the cars and planes and trains. Come out clean as if he dressed in teflon. I cannot see signs of imminent success at all. I see a bunch of misdirection and excuse making.

Reggie’s presser was underwhelming at best at a time when inspiration was high demand. He gives us we’re tying to biuld something here. My issue is not that he wants to biuld something at all. It’s WHO HE IS DOING IT WITH. I do not see leadeship nor clear direction. I see excuse making and misdirection. I don not see urgency and a sense of get it done at any cost attitude. He’s asking us to trust him while he screws up because he’s handicapped.

The Forty Niners have taken on ou persona of tough hell bent fo leather toughness. And we’ve taken on a the underprivileged helpless attitude that gets beat like hell and then whimper away with an excuse why.

Since when do we wait for someone else and take beatings, Reggie is NOT what I want as a GM and leader and DA is IMO way out of place here. He neithe knows who the Raiders once were nor does he care. He is NOT a RAIDER the sooner he is GONE the better………….period

Certainly not in Oakland, but his career resume certainly is. As does his ability to find pretty good job, almost immediately.

Until Hue scores 40 points in a playoff game as an OC, Knapp has him beat.

  • jackasspuria

Knapp is in Denver to coach up Osweiler — the QB of the future for the Broncos.

Knapp is questionable at best as a play caller and seems to do his best work as QB coach.

Houston Texans beatwriters pinpoint the departure of Knapp for the regression in Matt Schaub — although I thought Shaub had plateaued well before then and will always remain good, but not good enough.

Just say no to Geno. We need beef up front on both sides! Not fragile noodle armed risky QB’s with big contracts. I’ll take Pryor and his 500k a year deal easily over Geno and a top 3 contract.

2013 is *not* the year to take a QB. Think 2007 – the year of the JaMarcus and Brady Quinn.

Besides, TP could still turn out – why douse that flame now with a guy you *have* to play?

Bobby April would be a great hire, I am sure he would be able to figure out SOMEONE who knows how to at the very flipping least, fair catch a punt.

No worries about the Senior Bowl for an OC, you can’t teach any guys there an offense, everything is I formation, 2 WR’s sets. Can’t do anything else.

Perfect role for Al Saunders, I see no reason why even if we hire an OC tonight, that he should be “coaching” a team of guys who won’t be on our team.

The new OC should be in Mobile getting a feel for Reggie and DA, working the phones with current players, and overseeing the drills that Saunders is running.

We have a shoddy offensive line, no running game, a $13 million QB who’s contract we cannot get out of until *at least* 2014 (if even), a hungry 22 year old Sugar Bowl MVP under contract who just scored 3 TD’s after sitting on the bench for 2 years, an upcoming 2014 draft which will be have probably 5 legit first round QB’s in it.

All of those reasons trump the fact that Geno *might*, *might* be an NFL starting QB someday – personally I have my doubts. Think Jason Campbell. I’ll take Star, Joekel, Bjorn, Chance, Jarvis or about 10 others before taking Geno at 3.

Shoot, if STB couldn’t even do better than pulling Krapp off the scrap heap of retread OCs, what are the chances he’ll be able to identify and recruit a young, innovative, talented OC candidate from the college ranks or from another NFL staff ?

Don’t think I can endure another year with a boring, incompetent, predictable douche like Krapp running the O.

I enjoy watching Johnny Footbal, and am bummed that he can’t get a ticket on the bus for the wave of the future.

However, it is about sustained success at QB, for years upon years.

This circus act, running aroud offense already got one top QB from last years draft class in the hospital.

I’ll pass on that “excitement” and take a guy like Geno who could be the next Drew Bledsoe/Matt Ryan QB.

  • CDERaider

Unless DHB will take a big pay cut (and I mean big), he needs to be given a plane ticket back to Maryland. Nah, fck that he should be cut regardless. He is a huge disappointment and is holding the younger players back. Streater should be starting and playing every down in the #1 slot – and Criner needs to get alot more targets as well, especially on the outside and in the red zone – that kid is for real.

I love Ford coming back too he’ll of had plenty of recovery time and he should be ready to have a big contract year – he has yet to be ‘paid’ big so you know he’s ready to ball out if he wants to continue in the league. Moore should be much better this year too with Ford back and DHB gone. Without Ford and DHB regressing defenses clamped down on Moore and he’s not that kind of receiver he needs to be in single coverage and he wins almost every time.
