McKenzie commits to McFadden in 2013

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, January 17th, 2013 at 2:34 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Running back Darren McFadden is a big part of the Raiders plans moving forward in 2013, general manager Reggie McKenzie said Thursday.

McKenzie, meeting with beat writers for the first time since Nov. 30, brushed aside the notion that McFadden could be moved entering the final season of his contract following a disappointing season.

“I’m confident Darren’s going to play his last season, regardless of what’s out there,’’ McKenzie said. “We have no decision to do anything with Darren.’’

McFadden gained 707 yards on 216 carries, averaging 3.3 yards per attempt, as the Raiders dropped to 28th in rushing after gaining more yards on the ground than any team in the NFL from 2010-2011.

The Raiders switched to a zone blocking systems under recently-fired offensive coordinator Greg Knapp after playing more gap and power power schemes under Hue Jackson.

While McKenzie said execution was more of an issue than scheme, he also said, “It’s obvious Darren is much better on certain types of plays. That goes without saying. That’s how you’ve got to do it.’’

McKenzie said coach Dennis Allen was closing in on hiring a new offensive coordinator, although he declined to give a time line. The Raiders have talked with former Rams head coach Mike Martz and McKenzie confirmed speaking with Norv Turner and Marc Trestman, both of whom now have other jobs.

Former Jacksonville quarterbacks coach Greg Olson has also been reported as a candidate.

The Raiders also will hire a special teams coordinator, a linebackers coach and an offensive line coach.

The staff leaves for the Senior Bowl Saturday, where they’ll coach the North team, with practices starting Monday.

McKenzie touched on several subjects in a 42-minute meeting with local writers. Some quick hits:

– Right guard Mike Brisiel had ankle surgery following the season. McKenzie said he played with the injury all season and that it hampered his performance. Khalif Barnes (triceps) also had surgery.

– McKenzie was pleased with the job coach Dennis Allen did during the season in terms of changing the culture of the locker room and practice sessions and setting expectations. He liked team morale and the way the team competed _ especially on defense _ during December following an awful November.

– The latest medical reports on Carson Palmer is good. McKenzie expects him to be ready for the offseason.

– McKenzie did not get into specific transactions, but hinted it would have been difficult to cut Rolando McClain during the season because of the salary cap. McClain is expected to be released when it’s more beneificial to the Raiders financial bottom line.

– All moves will be made with the long-term in line.

“We’re not trying to hurry up to win one or two games and mortgage the possibility of winning 10 more,” McKenzie said. “We’re just going to build it the right way and make good, sound decisions.”

– McKenzie said he considered Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o a first-round talent but is going to wait and see how his current story unfolds before forming any judgement regarding how will affect him in the draft.

– Defensive tackle Richard Seymour and punter Shane Lechler, both scheduled for unrestricted free agency, have not necessarily been written off, but McKenzie said, “Everything’s predicated on money. You get guys that are used to making a set amount and they’re premiere players and you don’t know what other teams are going to throw out from a contract standpoint.”

– Regarding the change at offensive coordiantor, McKenzie said of Allen: “I was proud the way he identified the issues and attacked them. He didn’t just continue to run this offense and make it work, keep this guy, keep this guy- he evaluated it, said okay, he stood up, and said okay, we’re going to make a change.”

Gil Brandt know more football then anyone.. he doest think Raiders have a solid qb yet.

Btw the day Veldheere was drafted he Gil said in a chat that he would first be tried out as a CENTER.

Gil has great sources around the league.. he isnt gonna mock GENO to the raiders at 3 if he doesnt think something is up. IMO

Is he the only one thinking this at this point or are others ranking Geno this high?

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Clowney had no choice but to stay.. kid is only 19 yrs old.. needs another year

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

    Gil Brandt

    Pick No.

    3

    Geno Smith

    QB

    West Virginia

With lots of needs, the Raiders take their chances with Smith, who carries some risk, but offers a significant potential reward

walterfootball has him number 1 qb in the draft.. and going to the Queefs

  • CDERaider

The DHB pick was sadly worse than Al made in 2007 with PurpleDrank – at least Purple was a big armed QB coming off a big season for a big time team and all of the league had him as a top 10 player – top of most experts and teams draft boards and we needed a QB with a big arm, etc. He was just hiding something – he didn’t care about football anymore, he just wanted to get paid. But he had game.

DHB never did – he did little in college, had something like 40 catches and 4TDs his whole career and was never an all-conference anything, was listed on most boards as a 3rd or 4th – some as low as 5 or 6th WR. Not even considered a 1st round pick and Al signed him at #7 overall, gave him a massive contract, and forced the coaches to start him. And we’re paying for that even now.. At least we got rid of Purp years ago, we still have DropsHella and his huge contract …

Yep, read all the stories about it. And all the corresponding stories about how this could present a situation where Clowney is forced to stay, get hurt and kill his NFL stock. Much like his teammate.

  • http://www.raiders.com Raider O

Warmack, Te’O and Geno Smith are the UNQUESTIONED best prospects at their position, we need to draft one of these 3.

I’ll take the QB, but be pleased with the other two.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    Are you drunk Chico?
You want an OG, a big and slow MLB who has issues shedding blocks, or you want us to reach for an overrated QB with the 3rd pick?

  • GForce21

Manziel seems really frail. Not sure he would last long running around like he does in the NFL. RGIII (frail) was an injury concern going back to his playing days in Killeen, Texas.

Russell Wilson is short, but he is built like a running back and seems much more durable (he also seems to have more awareness while on the move).

I am torn on drafting a QB this year. I like Geno Smiths accuracy and fire, but that would signal the end to the TP6 experiment. As highlighted by others, there is a better QB class coming out in 2014. If we do wait, we can see if Pryor can play or not.

I say draft the best pass rusher available at 3, and go from there. I like what Von Miller does for Denver and the pundits are saying that Jarvis Jones is the closest thing to him in this years draft. His spinal issues scare me though.

  • jackasspuria

    KoolKell

Donte Whitner also was quoted saying Jim Harbaugh says players can come to talk to him about anything and almost everything is forgiveable… expect… putting your hands on a woman.

    Uh oh, Crabtree?

Walter football has him going # 1 OVERALL in the draft? Ok. Maybe there is something to it then.

I agree Brandt is legit and all. It does make u wonder if he knows something.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Reggie doesnt even know what he is gonna do yet.

I’d be for drafting a pass rusher.. or trading back picking up a guy like Alec Olgtree

but make no mistake.. if reggie belives in GENO.. then thats the pick. If he is right. GENO would be 10x more effective.. then a guy like Star or Damontre moore.

Its a risk though. Just like taking any player. Star could be like Gerald McCoy, Sedrick Ellis, Nick Fairley, Marcel Dareus who has yet to really make an impact. They are still looking for a QB

  • Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Optimist

Almost got happy thinking about Crabtree and Moss being compromised. But Moss is such a talented prick he still comes up big, if he decides to. And Crabtree better and he knows it. Whiners still coming up 10 pts short and maybe both are gone next year. Your right. Who cares? As long as they lose.

  • Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Optimist

Walter football has 1 QB in 2014 as a 1st rd lock. I’mnot sold on Walter.

  • DJ Johnny

    A couple questions I have.

-Does anyone think an ELITE QB can take over the Raiders as currently assembled and lead us to the playoffs?

    …and

-Is Geno Smith a DAY ONE starter and a potentially ELITE QB?

  • ian85

Geno smith is def not elite please pray the raiders don’t draft this bum please

  • CDERaider

National Football Post has Geno ranked the 36th player overall

    http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/NFPS-Top-200-Draft-Prospects-Version-40.html

Interestingly, they give Geno, Barkley, and Tyler Wilson the same grades with Mike Glennon (NCState) a 1/10 of a point grade lower (essentially the same grade).

Mel Kiper has come out and said he doesn’t think any of the QB’s in this draft should be taken in the 1st round.

I agree with him but somebody will probably bite as the QB hype machine will be in full effect. If we can trade down and get extra picks maybe take a 2nd round flyer on one of these guys but no way at #3.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

ya but it happens every year.. Teams need qb’s and after Pro days.. and combine teams fall in love with their guys.

    Tannehill?? Christian ponder 12 overall?

Russell wilson was said not to be elite.. dayum he could be elite in a few years.. guy is money with his throws.

its all a gamble.. and is Reggie ready to roll the dice on a QB this draft??

  • Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Optimist

Speaking of Walter and Mayock, go back and read their can’t miss projections of Jam and Gallery. I did today to refresh my skepticism of all draftniks.

  • 504 Raider

You know how Peyton Manning is on the sidelines after downing his gatorade, he goes over to the bench area standing there and pounds his fist into an open palm while explaing things and encouraging his O-linemen.

Well next season Knapp will be sitting between the guard and the center.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

NFL draft scout has geno the number 1 rated qb and going inthe first round

    cite accuracy and strong arm

Haven’t even read what he’s supposedly accused of yet. He’s a Whiner, he held out ’cause he thought he should’ve been picked higher, and he’s got a kind of important game coming up. I hope he’s innocent/guilty of whatever and it throws his game off. Primadonna jackass. Other than that, I like him.
