Breaking news: Raiders hire seasoned, well-regarded offensive coordinator

The Raiders on Friday hired Greg Olson to be their offensive coordinator, a person familiar with the situation confirmed Friday night.
Olson spent last season as the assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He replaces Greg Knapp in Oakland and will work under coach Dennis Allen.
Olson has six years’ experience as an offensive coordinator in the NFL, including three with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, from 2009-11. He also had one year in that capacity with the Detroit Lions and two with the St. Louis Rams.
During that time, Olson was credited with the rapid development of Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman into one of the league’s more promising players and for getting the most out of the Rams skill position players.
In 2006, the Rams became only the fourth team in NFL history with a 4,000-yard passer (Marc Bulger), 1,500-yard rusher (Steven Jackson) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce).
It’s also worth noting that Olson favors a power-blocking scheme, which means the zone-blocking scheme favored by Knapp and fired offensive line coach Frank Pollack are gone after one season.
That should help jump-start running back Darren McFadden, who averaged only 3.3 yards per carry in 2012 and never looked comfortable in the scheme.
Jackson had his best season in 2006, when Olson was his offensive coordinator.
Olson also worked with Drew Brees when both were at Purdue and Olson was the quarterbacks coach and coached under Jon Gruden, when both were with the Buccaneers.
Allen hired Olson after a lengthy and thorough search that included interviews with numerous high-profile candidates. In the end, Allen felt as if Olson is the best fit.
Many in league circles speak highly of Olson and say he’s a bright offensive coach. It’s conceivable that Olson will join the Raiders in time to help the coaching staff work the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., next week.
No word yet from the Raiders on when Olson will be introduced as their offensive coordinator.

I doubt we get a chance to draft Joeckel but Warmack will for sure be there.

Veldeer, Warmack, Wiz, is a good way to start off your line hopefully we can find a RT later but it sounds to me that Reggie is fond of Barnes.

  • freezetag168

So now it’s Olson for OC, April for ST, now who’s LB and OL?

  • J Hill

Watching the bowl games, Werner and Mingo looked dominant.

Moore and Jones looked just OK, imo.

I’d prefer to trade down and take either of those guys if we go DE.

  • CDERaider

Geno Smith is the next Jason Campbell

Matt Barkeley is the next Jimmy Clausen (remember Mel Kiper hyping him in the 2010 draft)

  • J Hill

Barnes can’t block Von Miller 1 on 1 and gets about 5 false start penalties per year.

    He’s decent at RT.

Because he was rated 4th in the NFL at RT in 2011. We slipped to 19th this year while he was out. (Smith was horrible)

I do like the sound of Veldeer, Warmack, Wiz together.

    Otto.

Gallery was a FA. We offered him 3 million to return.

We drafted Veldheer when Tom Cable was still the HC. We passed on Iupati, Davis, and others at LT because Veldheer was one of those later round athletic guys.

Barnes and Carlisle were on the right side of our OL under Cable and continued under Hue.

    Totally false????
    ===========================

first…gallery was asking for 8M/year…and we offered 2.5….he signed a 3yr/15M contract with the hawks

yes …we drafted veldeer when cable was coach….but davis already inserted hue to run the entire O and the OL changed with massive OT’s….that resulted in our first 8-8 season

barnes are carlisle were on the right side…but two points…..barnes was still a big power OT….he was not great at ZBS then and he wasnt last year,,,,,,also barnes was a backup to walker

why would you want bergstrom in a power scheme if the scouting report on him is he is not strong but a better technique guy….if we were sticking with ZBS then i would say fine…hope he’s the starter

Per suggestion from a Bleacher article, Reggie could get our 2nd round pick back …

    ————————–

I’d rather have Joekel, Warmack, Star (even though I’m not totally sold) or pass rusher dejour honestly.

    ————————-

I like those guys too, but wouldn’t you trade that pick for trade haul like?

(Pick 21) Xavier Rhohdes CB , Florida State
(Pick 35) Margus Hunt, DE, SMU
(Pick 85) Kwame Geathers, DT, Georgia

In return for #3 pick, we get an elite CB, a freakish DE, a productive mauler at DT and as for the future RT pick we take

(pick 67) Kyle Long OT using our 3rd pick

Anyway, its all conjecture at this point but its interesting to see how Reggie could trade down to get extra picks when we currently only have 5 picks and see what might be available.
    ——————————-
I’ve seen Rhodes projected in the second a few places. If we could trade back to 8 or 9 with for the Bills/Jets 2nd and some other picks I think I’d rather do that.

    (Pick 8) Warmack
    (Pick 41) Rhodes
    (Pick 67) Long

+the picks we have and the other picks we get. I would love that.

You *can’t* cut Palmer – its a $17 million cap hit if you trade or cut him in 2013. He ain’t going anywhere. If Reggie takes Geno, we only pick 4 more times in the entire draft and we won’t pick again till the 3rd round. Geno will then require a big time contract as the top QB taken in the top 5 and he we still have Palmers huge salary in 2013. Makes absolutely no sense. Palmer is also still under contract in 2014 btw – so just *cutting him* is not an option with a team over the cap and with so many holes. Ain’t gonna happen.

    >>>>

CP is here for one more year. Two if he makes the playoffs. Beyond that I don’t trust Pryor. If Geno is the guy we get him now while we have this low of a pick and let him sit for a year or two.

It depends on what our scouts say.

And I think rookies have a cap for signing.

  • J Hill

I don’t “want” Bergstrom to play RG, but McKenzie seems to like him and he played well in the last game against SD. We’ve been employing some power blocking in our scheme since week 4. So if the GM is pumping him up and he’s much cheap than Briesel, just connecting the dots.

315lb former LTs should be able to play OG with no problem.

Oh no, Brandt is trying to play off Barkley as a worthy top 10 pick now. I thought we were done with that nonsense.

College success or failure isn’t exactly a great indicator of how well a QB does in the NFL for some reason.

If you need a QB, you roll the dice… the upside is too high not to.

I’ve seen him play plenty of times both live and on TV. The success he has had has been largely on the back of the defense, Marquise Lee (top 10 pick next year if healthy/out of trouble) and the O-Line. He’s Matt Leinart with a worse overall team.

Sorry, but IMO fans are the worst to judge how a QB will turn out in the NFL. Its SUCH a different game. Scouts usually pay more attention to mechanics than anything else.

Doesn’t this sound tempting to you?

Throwing Mechanics: One of the top facets of Smith’s game in his ability to throw at multiple arm angles. This is an underrated skill at the next level. QB’s have to be able to adjust their arm angle or pass rushers will bat a ton of balls down (See: Brandon Weeden). He possesses a nice, compact throwing motion that allows for a catchable ball. He is a natural athlete that shows up in his feet during the throwing motion. He’s a natural knee bender that allows for a balanced setup to throwing the ball. It’s tough finding negative aspects about Smith’s mechanics.

These NFL coaches all belong to a club.

It’s tough breaking into that club which is why Allen has so much trouble getting established coaches.

They all worry about their careers and so they won’t go to any place where their future is incertain.
And let’s face it, in Oakland it is uncertain.

The guys in the club hire and fire each other and always give glowing recommendations to either the guy that they fired or the guy that they hired.

I really, really, really hate it when you go to the barber to get your hair cut and when you leave you all those little hairs down your back and chest! No matter how much vacuuming they do! Those little f*ckers itch! They oughta invent adhesive barber’s tape to put around your neck at top of shirt to keep those hairs away. Adhesive wouldn’t need to be too sticky, Just enough to seal your shirt to your skin. I always have to come immediately and shower. It’s a freakin’ pain in the posterior! What gets me is that I don’t have that much hair left to cut.
