Breaking news: Raiders hire seasoned, well-regarded offensive coordinator

The Raiders on Friday hired Greg Olson to be their offensive coordinator, a person familiar with the situation confirmed Friday night.
Olson spent last season as the assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He replaces Greg Knapp in Oakland and will work under coach Dennis Allen.
Olson has six years’ experience as an offensive coordinator in the NFL, including three with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, from 2009-11. He also had one year in that capacity with the Detroit Lions and two with the St. Louis Rams.
During that time, Olson was credited with the rapid development of Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman into one of the league’s more promising players and for getting the most out of the Rams skill position players.
In 2006, the Rams became only the fourth team in NFL history with a 4,000-yard passer (Marc Bulger), 1,500-yard rusher (Steven Jackson) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce).
It’s also worth noting that Olson favors a power-blocking scheme, which means the zone-blocking scheme favored by Knapp and fired offensive line coach Frank Pollack are gone after one season.
That should help jump-start running back Darren McFadden, who averaged only 3.3 yards per carry in 2012 and never looked comfortable in the scheme.
Jackson had his best season in 2006, when Olson was his offensive coordinator.
Olson also worked with Drew Brees when both were at Purdue and Olson was the quarterbacks coach and coached under Jon Gruden, when both were with the Buccaneers.
Allen hired Olson after a lengthy and thorough search that included interviews with numerous high-profile candidates. In the end, Allen felt as if Olson is the best fit.
Many in league circles speak highly of Olson and say he’s a bright offensive coach. It’s conceivable that Olson will join the Raiders in time to help the coaching staff work the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., next week.
No word yet from the Raiders on when Olson will be introduced as their offensive coordinator.

    I can see this happening..

Olson brings the offense back up to a Hue Jackson level of production, then Jason Tarver proves to be our Chuck Bresnahan

we finish 8-8 again, 3rd place in the AFC West

Purvis–lol. I kinda think he’s married to a white woman who b1tches nonstop.

Yea… Carlyle and Briesel were soooo stellar last year!

    Agreed.

OG is the “LEAST” of our needs?????

    WOW!

    >>>>

I wonder what games these guys are watching?

“Football outsiders” had our mid/guards ranked 28th this season, down from 25th the previous year. This is a heavily neglected area.

  • jackasspuria

    All starts in the trenches.

Raiders O-line needs a surge of talent and so does the Raiders D-line.

Cooper Carlisle, Mark Brisiel and Khalif Barnes are serviceable, but a new influx of talent can only help.

Tommy Kelly is also serviceable, but, his 2013 salary is not reflective of his pay.

Like many have said here, O isn’t going without O-line.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Palmer will throw a costly INT going for the win in the opener

  • jackasspuria

    RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

And McFadden is lost to a foot injury in the opener, as well.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

draft barret jones after trade down.. move wiz jr back to guard

  • RaiderRockstar

    Dr Bob,

I’m on board with giving the youngsters more playing time too!

Pryor, Bergstrom, Ausberry & Nix on offense

Crawford, Bilukidi, Burnett & Chekwa on defense

  • J Hill

Jennings and Streater sound good to me, RRS.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Taiwan JONES will have a career year this year under OLSON

runs for 700 yards .. catches for 300 yards

Every now and then you’re sensible.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Sign Charles woodson, Sign ASO if they are both cut

trade down and draft Alec Olgetree or Barret jones

  • Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Optimist

And then you’re not. Taiwan’s going on ‘D’.

  • jackasspuria

    Here’s another thing to consider….

The ZBS system called for smaller, athletic type lineman and that usually meant teams could wait in late rounds/free agency to nab these type of lineman.

With Greg Olson now as OC, a disciple of the power running, vertical passing style offense, the Raiders are expected to go to more of a power blocking scheme.

And those big brutes are the big uglies taken in the first two to three rounds of the draft.

  • dr_robert

    Pryor–wr yes. Qb no.
    Bergstrom/nix–yes
    Ausberry–sure. In two te sets.

    Crawford–in time
    Bilukidi–definitely
    Burnett–not quite
    Chekwa–sub

  • jackasspuria

It will be interesting to see if any of the players that were barely used by Knapp will be used by Olson next season.

Taiwan Jones was in the doghouse from the get-go after his week 1 performance.

And DA gave Knapp the freedom to call plays and use players as he saw fit.

Eager to see if Olson uses TJ, Ausberry, Gordon, etc. etc. more next season.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Palmer is not a qb anymore.. he is an OC in training now. / qb coach

He can coach PRYOR who is a better RZ Qb then palmer. power run game gets us into RZ .. Pryor finishes it .

Our starting QB isn’t much for scrambling. Gotta protect him!

  • jackasspuria

    Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Optimist

I believe it’s more likely Taiwan Jones will have more interceptions as a DB than carries as a RB next season.

    But, who knows.

Maybe TJ isn’t in the doghouse under Olson…?

I tell you you’re sensible now and then and you go off the rails.

Has to learn how to block or the D will know why he’s in there.

  • J Hill

TJ looked damn good as a STs gunner.

    Was a former CB too.

I wouldn’t mind seeing him get a shot in the secondary.

DMac and Reece are going to get most of the work at RB no matter how you slice it.

  • jackasspuria

    Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Optimist

Indeed. So true about the position of running back is more than just carrying or catching the ball. You also have to protect QB.

It’s like Chris Johnson’s situation in Tennessee. Teams now he’s in their to carry the ball. Dude isn’t stout and can’t block a lick. And TJ is, physically, built like CJ.

    Daniel Jeremiah‏@MoveTheSticks

Georgia LB Alec Ogletree reminds me of a bigger version of FSU/Steelers LB Lawrence Timmons. Very athletic/explosive, struggles to take-on

  • ian85

Trading down makes alot if sense and so does taking a oline man but I really want Moore or Werner so next year we can pair one of them up with clowney that DE combo would be insane and no doubt the best combo in the NFL for years that will be mumbles and tits legacy for the raiders when there fired next year but atleast we will have a great pass rushing dline due to there incompetence

  • mistic666

Mistic the suppa busta is having a nervous breakdown.

  • RaidO

    Greg Olson?

DA is done. Just fire DA now and get it over with. What a uninspiring choice at OC.

  • Al_is_theraiders

if olson can use the talent it may get interesting…if he is a shill for DA…5-11

  • Al_is_theraiders

    they will call it improvent…

  • jackasspuria

    Ian85

Getting a terrorizing DE combo like that would be enticing and fantastic.

But there are too many variables at this point in terms of Clowney.

Sure, he could become more of a monster and guarantee himself the top pick spot or top 5.

But, he could get injured, academics could faulter, etc. etc.

Plus, while it seems feasible the Raiders will be picking in Top 5 again, that’s not a guaranteed thing, as well.

  • jackasspuria

    RaidO

Here’s the glimmer of hope in Olson:
A power-running, vertical offense disciple, creates an offense based on his player’s strengths.

Those attributes should at least give him a ‘wait-and-see’ from the Nation.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

man could u imagine if this te’o came out like 2 weeks after the draft

and the raiders had taken him at 3 Lol.. Raider nation would be having fits

  • Just Fire Baby

Seems like a no sh!t kind of thing but when everybody has examples of every position being the RIGHT way to win, I feel like bringing it up.

    Well, can’t argue with that.

Hard to feel overly encouraged about Raiders offense next year reading the timeline of @AsherMathews.

  • RaidO

“Of the teams that Olson was OC of, the offenses have ranked 28, 10, 28, 30, 20, and 27th.”

Don’t expect much. I think DA just signed his walking papers.

    Maybe Lovie Smith in 2014.

  • ProRaider

If Reggie and especially this coaching staff get some serious help, maybe even from an outside source, they might improve. But they all really need sound advice on everything from A to Z. All facets of the game, coaching, protocol, etc. All of it. Reggie and this coaching staff need help. Not a bad thing, but leave those guys alone and we are looking at 2-14.

  • Al_is_theraiders

Best line in regards to the Te’o story I found was along the lines of this:

“That would explain Manti Te’o's performance in the BCS title game. He wasn’t trying to tackle Alabama players. He was trying to give his imaginary girlfriend a hug out there on the field.”

  • Just Fire Baby

I think this Te’O thing will end up being like the Randy Moss deal.

It was clear with Moss, as it is with Te’O, that he was one of the top 3-5 players in the draft. ON-field performance was off the charts, for multiple collegiate years.

Then you get some funky pre-draft stuff going on, he slips from the top 5 or so, into the late teens, then by the 3rd week of the season, the whole league realizes they massively overthunk that one.

Te’O is going to be a multiple Pro Bowl LB, not a doubt in my mind.

Him, Warmack or Smith are my three top choices. Each one of these DE/OLB guys scare me a little, but we do need help there.

  • jackasspuria

    Al_is_theraiders

A lot of the Gruden-to-Raiders hopefuls are encouraged by the Olson signing, believe it or not.

It gives more credence to Jon coming back.

    Why?

Gruden hired Greg Olson to replace Paul Hackett as QB coach in Tampa in Jon’s final year at the helm of the Buccaneers.

  • Al_is_theraiders

    interesting…

  • ian85

Jackass I kno that barring injury tho he should be the first player taken and I just don’t have faith in Reggie or Da so I expect to be picking in the top 2 next year

  • Al_is_theraiders

i wanna see tj get a screen…i want to see him in open space.

  • Just Fire Baby

People mock Te’O for the ‘Bama game, but didn’t Jarvis Jones get just as manhandled when he played them?

Hell, Jones was neutralized BY TE’S THAT GAME!!!

  • Scourge

    Ian85

I hear you man. I could see a disaster season and a so-so season coming up in 2013.

  • Just Fire Baby

Taiwan Jones has more fumbles than 10 yard gains in his career.

    Move him to defense.

  • Scourge

I wonder if Gruden will be in phone contact with Mark during the draft?
