Breaking news: Raiders hire seasoned, well-regarded offensive coordinator

By Steve Corkran
Friday, January 18th, 2013 at 11:04 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders on Friday hired Greg Olson to be their offensive coordinator, a person familiar with the situation confirmed Friday night.
Olson spent last season as the assistant head coach/quarterbacks coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He replaces Greg Knapp in Oakland and will work under coach Dennis Allen.
Olson has six years’ experience as an offensive coordinator in the NFL, including three with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, from 2009-11. He also had one year in that capacity with the Detroit Lions and two with the St. Louis Rams.
During that time, Olson was credited with the rapid development of Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman into one of the league’s more promising players and for getting the most out of the Rams skill position players.
In 2006, the Rams became only the fourth team in NFL history with a 4,000-yard passer (Marc Bulger), 1,500-yard rusher (Steven Jackson) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce).
It’s also worth noting that Olson favors a power-blocking scheme, which means the zone-blocking scheme favored by Knapp and fired offensive line coach Frank Pollack are gone after one season.
That should help jump-start running back Darren McFadden, who averaged only 3.3 yards per carry in 2012 and never looked comfortable in the scheme.
Jackson had his best season in 2006, when Olson was his offensive coordinator.
Olson also worked with Drew Brees when both were at Purdue and Olson was the quarterbacks coach and coached under Jon Gruden, when both were with the Buccaneers.
Allen hired Olson after a lengthy and thorough search that included interviews with numerous high-profile candidates. In the end, Allen felt as if Olson is the best fit.
Many in league circles speak highly of Olson and say he’s a bright offensive coach. It’s conceivable that Olson will join the Raiders in time to help the coaching staff work the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., next week.
No word yet from the Raiders on when Olson will be introduced as their offensive coordinator.

Offseason roster additions — draft, FA — will be interesting.

DA said Raiders D would be multiple in terms of sets 4-3, 3-4, etc. etc.

Wonder if McKenzie and Co. target more guys to implement more of a 3-4 base look or will Raiders stick to 4-3 base.

Elway and Co. say they already have QB of future in Brock Osweiler.

  • CDERaider

Maybe Olson can bring in FA LaGarrette Blount – 6’0 245 lb beast had 1000 yd season under Olson 2010 perfect big back change of pace to DMAC. He will cost vet minimum. Goodson will not be resigned since we’re moving back to PBS use that money for Blount signing.

If Gruden does come back, he keeps Olson.

    Why?

Gruden hand picked Olson to coach his QBs in Tampa. Greg Olson replaced Paul Hackett under Gruden’s watch.

Ummm….why are we “quoting” other message board commentors?

Do you think Donkey Semi-Pro’s quote Mistic or Priest?

It’s ok if Gruden picks Olson. They “like” Gruden, lol.

  • Just Fire Baby

    Scourge,

By all contacts Al Saunders is in great shape. Hell he is working at age 67, so you got to give that to him.

People just make it seem like he is dying to coach our offense and the organization is holding him back.

I am sure if offered the position he would consider it, it would be a huge pay raise and his last “shot” at things.

But I don’t think he is losing any sleep if they keep him in his current role.

    ==============================

And that’s where he belongs. He does seem to have a good QB coach track record. Hey, maybe something good comes out of this, and Pryor learns a thing or two from him!

If Gruden does come back, and if he does keep him, then he will move him to QB coach position. hopefully.

Here’s a thought… what if Gruden is planning on coming back next year, and he told Mark to get the ball rolling by hiring Olson, so that he can begin grooming Pryor, so that when Gruden takes over Pryor will be ready to go. Hmmmmm….. :)

Maybe this is all the first influx of the Gruden regime.

Reggie forced DA to hire Olson cuz that’s who Gruden wants. Gruden one of his guys to be at the Senior Bowl in advance of the announcement following the game.

The reason Gruden wasn’t announced already is because he’s wrapping things up with ESPN and finishing the particulars of the contract with the Raiders.

  • J Hill

2 all star games on today.

Are these the 4th and 5th rd guys or the UDFAs?

  • Scourge

    Jack….

Got it but Knapp will be able to work with Osweiler and the 3rd QB more because Peyton won’t need any of Knapp’s attention. If Knapp’s better at QB coaching than OC-ing, then it makes sense (at least to me) in way.

  • jackasspuria

    Funny how things work out.

Olson is dismissed by St. Louis and in comes Al Saunders to replace him.

Raiders OC job is open and in comes Olson to find Saunders on staff as well.

DJ, thinking kind of the same thing here, except that I see it happening next year, not this one. But it is fun to speculate on such a move…

  • Scourge

    JFB..agreed!

  • jackasspuria

    Scourge

Exactly. Knapp is there to teach the younger QBs. He will have little to do with Manning in terms of mechanics and advice.

Knapp has long been a great teacher to QBs. Jeff Garcia credited Knapp for helping him and so did Matt Schaub.

In fact, one of the Texans’ beatwriters opined Knapp’s departure would hurt Schaub. Matt did not play as well this year like the season prior with Knapp teaching him.

  • Just Fire Baby

People are STILL talking about Gruden.

Folks, he ain’t coming back here. There is about 30 better jobs between the NFL and college than us.

He will wait until his top 2-3 choices open up and go there.

He isn’t just “settling” for the Oakland Raiders HC gig.

    LOL……..you people

Defense will continue their strong play from the end of last yr. Will be even better with stud defensive pick in 1st rd. and FA steals.

Offense will be revitalized with Knapp gone and scheme tailored to player strengths.

Breakout yr. for DMAC and passing game as well.

Special teams bolstered with return game of Ford and better coverage with new special teams coach.

    12-4.

    >>>>

Huh? DJ are you feeling ok? This is the forum where everyone whines about the suckage we will endure for the next gazillion years. That all is lost. All hope is wasted. Any progress is impossible.

    Did you miss the meeting?

    1114,

I know. Just having fun. Raiders don’t give us much so we are forced to make stuff up.

  • Just Fire Baby

Tiger sill needs a caddy, Peyton still needs a QB coach.

Knapp will be doing plenty for Peyton, and have a side project with the Brock kid.

  • EMRaiders

    JFB… don’t pi$$ on our Chucky parade man…

With the decision making and hirings going on right now, that is the only thing that keeps us going…lol

  • J Hill

    JFB,

Curious what job you think Gruden is waiting for?

You better not say the Cowgirls, lol.

Any job “opening up” is going to be a team that is pretty bad. Thus, the job being open, lol.

  • Gdog

Maybe Denver hired Knapp to get away from the no-huddle?

Remember that Knapp said it is impossible to run more than a few times a game!

  • CDERaider

Greg Olson was the QB coach under Gruden for the 2008 season and was hired when Mike Mularkey turned down the original offer to be the OC at the Falcons. The Rams had just fired Olson as OC. Jeff Garcia started 11 games and Brian Griese started 5. They finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs. Gruden was fired and Olson promoted to OC in the new staff.

One year later, Gruden did call out Olson by name publically referring to the friends he still had on the Bucs staff and people he ‘missed’. So maybe he did put a good word in for him through the grapevine but not sure how much DA has any direct connection to Gruden.

Still no ‘official’ acknowledgement from the Raiders of the hire.

  • DJ Johnny

    1118,

Ha. I know. I can’t just accept looking forward to another lost year just so we can get the number 1 pick in 2014.

IMO it’s not impossible that it goes the way I mentioned.

How many yr’s have we had where we were supposed to be a SB contender and fizzled out? I remember in the 90′s it was like that all the time.

Why can’t it be reversed and go the other way for us?

There IS some talent on this team and with a high pick to add to it and some wise FA pickups? Why not.

  • edward teach

John Fox; “So Peyton, we’re thinking about bringing Greg Knapp on board as QB coach. Whaddya think?”

Peyton; “Keep him away from me and we’ll get along just fine.”

    Raiders are gonna surprise.

It will be discovered just how devastating Knapp was to the offense.

The D will continue to play like they did at the end of the season…only better with the addition of a couple good FA’s and a stud lineman we get at # 3.

  • Just Fire Baby

Jared Cook would be a great, fairly inexpensive TE.

Bennett as well, although he seems too much of a horses azz for DA and The Reggie.

WR….it is all about Gregg Jennings. He went kind of Hollywood last offseason, would probably welcome a move to California.

We would probably have to overpay him, and the last 2 years of his contract would be out of whack, but we need that impact WR.

If Gruden is getting anyone to set things up for him in 2014, it’s Jerry Jones.

Monte Kiffin running the D, Jadon Garret as the lame duck.

Is Josh Cribbs still a great return man? I wouldn’t mind having him if he can solidify that aspect. Signing him and Bowe/Jennings would be cool if that is so.

    1118,

Ha. I know. I can’t just accept looking forward to another lost year just so we can get the number 1 pick in 2014.

    —————————————-

Not looking forward to losing at all. Just trying to find something *real* to be positive about. I would love to see the team have a big season *this* year. But with every move that’s happened since Jan 2012, it’s very clear this its all about burn it down and rebuild it. Personally I didn’t agree with it but its past the point of no return and Reggie has been *very clear* about it several times now publically.

Getting rid of the bad contracts and unperforming players, fixing the cap and building with solid young players with sound contracts *is* progress and is winning the battle that has to be fought. 2014 *is* something to look forward to. If they can do this thing right (and get a capable staff together), the winning will come.

And by 2014, the planets might very well be aligned for the Death Star to return.

  • Just Fire Baby

Jennings is there when you need him.

He hasn’t missed THAT many games his career, this was his first season with some real injuries, but he was there at the end of the season catching TD’s.

  • rediaR

    Warmack for Reggie Mac!

  • Just Fire Baby

Either way, if not Jennings, you get the point.

We need one of THOSE guys out wide.

Raiders hire OC Greg Olson: A Grade

I’m not sure if most people know a lot about Greg Olson, but he did a great job with Josh Freeman in 2010 and then made the most out of Chad Henne last year as the quarterbacks’ coach. He’s a very good hire for the Raiders.
