Raiders move even closer to rounding out coaching staff

The Raiders hired long-time NFL coach Bobby April to fill their vacancy at special teams coordinator.
April spent the past three seasons as the Philadelphia Eagles special teams coordinator. Overall, he has coached 21 years in the NFL, mostly special teams, and 13 in the collegiate ranks.
Twice, April was named special teams coach of the year, both times when he was with the Buffalo Bills.
Coach Dennis Allen fired Steve Hoffman last season to coach special teams. Hoffman was one of four coaches fired by Allen after the 2012 season.
On Friday, the Raiders filled the first of those four vacancies by hiring Greg Olson to be their offensive coordinator. Allen still needs to add an offensive line and linebackers coach.
The Raiders confirmed the hiring of Olson on Saturday afternoon. They also said that the coaching staff is on its to Mobile, Ala., to commence preparation for coaching in the Senior Bowl.
Olson and April likely will be join the staff in Alabama at some point, if not from the outset.

Just like Hue going 8-8 yet only 3-3 in weak Manning-less AFC West.

And blowout losses vs Packers, Patriots, Dolphins, and Broncos.

Three out of the four remaining teams play plenty of 3-4 defense. Hope the 3-year Raider plan includes incorporating that more.

Btw. I like Pryor. But am not in love with Pryor declaring him a future HOFer etc. Im not mistic/priestt. I’ve repeatedly expressed myself well, without ambiguity. That I like Pryor but know he has accuracy problems from time to time. The consistency is lacking, not the ability. Whether he can become full-time starter or not I am not making that determination until I see more of him in pre-season/regular season after another full camp as #1 or #2, not #3.

    I said i’d make the Pryor/Foles trade.
I’d consider the Pryor/DHB/Ford to Browns trade (if i knew what was being offered back).
Otherwise, if he stays on, I’d be keen to see him put in the effort and hopefully become a starter.

It’s the same as the heat I got on the Olson comments.

Olson’s track record is pathetic. I dont like the hire. I got hated on for running a smear-campaign lol. Meanwhile, you lot are happy to allow yourselves the same right to flame Pryor on his college track-record. To flame Knapp on his track-record — which I ALSO flamed daily all 2012.

yet somehow im the bad guy for voicing a dislike for olson, yet still readying to take a ‘wait and see’ approach with Olson.

yet none of you want to allow pryor a “wait and see” either.

Who’s being unreasonable in both debates? Not me.

  • alex7

    8-8 and 4-12 both = no playoffs.

it’s not so much about the throwing style. Rivers/Kosar/Brennan have decidedly side-arm motions. It’s the technique of correct footwork, hip rotation, pulling the side-arm down and in and hand placement/flip after the throw.

    >>>>

Rivers I guess is a great example of why you might be right. He throws the ball like a shot-put… but still has amazing accuracy.

But I don’t remember Rivers having the accuracy problem the other posters are pointing out. Maybe its a double whammy.

I rewatched the Pryor game specifically with an open mind to see if I was being biased yesterday. I saw MAYBE ten really nice perfect throws. Is that what anyone should get excited about without excuses?

Ten nice throws per game in the NFL gets you only one thing… out of the NFL. Lets be honest…

I don’t mind the Olson hiring. No top coordinators want to come to Oakland. And Olson hasn’t had much to work with previously.

Pryor is different because there’s just nothing to blame other than a lack of skill. For me, there’s no reason to expect anything different.

Fans can expect him to improve. Part of being a fan for many of you. I just don’t see the point in hoping for something so unlikely to happen.

    Thanks for the reply.
The best, briefest way i can highlight what im saying is…

Pryor lacks the consistency, but demonstrates the ability to throw pinpoint accurate passes short/med/long/horizontal/vertical.

In short, he CAN throw accurately, but isn’t CONSISTENT yet at it. Consistency is something that can be improved on with more reps and desire, muscle-memory, 11-on-11 practice, real games, correct full-time QB coaching. It’s only part-time in college.

    It can also not improve.

It’s too early to make any sort of determination on Pryor yet. That is all.

  • alex7

does anyone remember whether the Redskins were 4-12, 5-11, 6-10, or 8-8 last year?

    Hardly matters.

You’re either a good team or you’re not.

And under Cable, Hue, and Dennis, we haven’t been. At all. Blowout losses every time it mattered.

  • alex7

    GG

history says it’s NOT too early to tell on Pryor.

I’ll take historical statistical analysis over a fan’s opinion.

So you accept what youre told without questioning it, or investigating it first. Which is why Cork shills here.

Geno Smith was connecting at a 70% clip in the Big 12 vs legit teams.

    >>>>

He pinpointed one really nice pass over the left-middle in double coverage. Most of the slant patterns he threw behind the receiver. He had some really nice passes out of scramble plays on the run which are encouraging. I liked the way he kept his eyes downfield while scrambling.

I really didn’t see much “pin-point” that you are mentioning though. Certainly not enough to be excited about. And lets face it.. we were sand-bagged by the coaching staff on him from the beginning. I was expecting hot-garbage. He didn’t look that bad in comparison to hot-garbage.

What’s to believe/disbelieve? Olson’s track-record is there for all to see. Every year he’s OC’d he’s finished #20-#30 rank in offense, regressed it, and got fired.

If Cork tells you he’s highly regarded, so what? Does that mean he’s a good hire just because Cork told you it was? It’s irrelevant what Cork opines or doesn’t opine. The track-record is there to not be impressed about.

Question is, why should Cork have to shill that message? Let people make up their own minds.

Someone whose opinion/comments I’ll mostly skip over because you dont have any yourself, just regurgitate whatever you heard or got told from whomever.

I would rather read and engage people who actually have something to offer themselves, be it for/against whatever topic.

So I guess all I’m going to read from your posts all year is “but he’s well-regarded” whenever Olson is mentioned by anyone, whenever people discuss his week to week play-calling. “But he’s well-regarded”

  • lefty12

Again, you don’t understand. Before I proclaim him great, good,OK,or pathetic I want to see it.I’m not taking your word for it.He comes highly regarded.I hope he lives up to his hype, but it won’t be known until we see it one way or the other.Unlike you,I won’t condemn him until he shows it is deserved.

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

Dont forget you like me and 90% of everyone else was slamming Knapp hire this time last year. Why were you okay to slam Knapp even when Cork/others talked him up? Because you’ve seen him OC before, you only watch Raiders play here and there. Understandable you dont have a strong opinion either like/hate of Olson. I understand man, you NEED to wait and see.

I’ll wait and see, but I’ll complain right now because he just got hired and i am venting an opinion of the hire.

This is a public blog, where people vent their opinions, you know. I see you forget that.

Anyway, good luck to you in 2013. If you ever say anything truly interesting and from your own mind, i’ll engage you. Dont hold grudges. Up to you too how you perform on here tho. Two-way street.

LOL,with that I will leave you to your childish thoughts. You are a funny dude and I don’t mean humorous.

  • http://ggeden.blogspot.com/ GG

I think that’s the heart of our problem here, Lefty. I’ve worked it out.

You havent seen him OC, so dont have a strong opinion on Olson one way or the other therefore. Havent seen him yourself to judge yourself, so need to give him a wait and see.

Yet! you get agitated and aggressive that someone else has a strong opinion on him, a bad opinion of him, because they have seen him OC, and/or analyzed his stats as OC, or read fan comments on his OC’ing.

I guess if you’re gonna be straight up disliking anyone who voices a strong opinion of Olson before you’ve been afforded an opportunity to judge him yourself, then if you’re hating the negative opinions, you should be hating the positive opinions too. Like Cork telling you “you must like this hire, Lefty, he is well-regarded, I am telling you to like this hire.”

That must also go against your principle here. Cant have people voicing a strong opinion either good or bad of him, BEFORE you’ve had the chance to judge him yourself.

  • http://www.Raiders.com KoolKell
