Raiders move even closer to rounding out coaching staff

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, January 19th, 2013 at 5:30 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders hired long-time NFL coach Bobby April to fill their vacancy at special teams coordinator.
April spent the past three seasons as the Philadelphia Eagles special teams coordinator. Overall, he has coached 21 years in the NFL, mostly special teams, and 13 in the collegiate ranks.
Twice, April was named special teams coach of the year, both times when he was with the Buffalo Bills.
Coach Dennis Allen fired Steve Hoffman last season to coach special teams. Hoffman was one of four coaches fired by Allen after the 2012 season.
On Friday, the Raiders filled the first of those four vacancies by hiring Greg Olson to be their offensive coordinator. Allen still needs to add an offensive line and linebackers coach.
The Raiders confirmed the hiring of Olson on Saturday afternoon. They also said that the coaching staff is on its to Mobile, Ala., to commence preparation for coaching in the Senior Bowl.
Olson and April likely will be join the staff in Alabama at some point, if not from the outset.

I cant remember mare than once or twice our pr even had a chance to return it. All the other parts seem interchangeable. the cowboys and steelers offense have neen good and most of thier big plays are playground style. This year todd haley kinda took that out. And it hurt them. Also our defence until there real strong, those 2 3 yard runs for 1st downs to keep them off the field. Isvaluable. Another thing, in my opinion the most important part of defemce is emotion. And until the last game our whole team had none.

  • elraidmanhattan

Raiderman bingo hit the nail on the obvious head, this will be Palmer’s last year as a raider, probably retire.

I like pryor, and the raiders blew it by letting palmer pad stats on to a losing season, pryor should have gotten more time period, don’t know what the hell this staff was thinking-

And again let myers walk, sign keller.

    No.
I remember seeing VY’s pic when it generated media buzz a few years back, and I’m huge Buckeye fan, so I was watching TP run at his pro day which he did shirtless.

I really dont get the pryor discussions AT ALL.

#1…he is not that good…he is still a developmental project……yes, he played better than anticipated which makes you want to continue to work with him….but as far as being ready to go out and play against real competition…..in games that count….no friggin way
#2….like it or not CP is the started QB in 2013…and probably 2014…unless injury there is no other realistic possibility……they arent going to bring in someone who can actually compete because it will cost too much….they arent going to sit CP because it too high price for someone on the bench….they arent going to cut him because the cap hit….right now the most likely QB we add to the staff is…..drum roll…….matt leinart…..

hell no, we need the sense Reggie has given this franchise, we gonna have some real crappy years, yes, but then we will come out strong an with a healthy economy and money to sign proper players. this sh1t with putting out fires all over the place clearly doesnt work.

scott o’neil hire (if it happens) is probably not on the football side of things, but the business side.

  • BLACKBONES

The hiring of Olson was “having to settle for Olson” my take is that they wanted Marc Trestman. The best we should expect from Olson is a mediocre Offense with the only positive that he can develop TP. There is no one from either reading or direct conversation that is excited about Olson, more so beleiving that DA has sealed his fate, and we are doomed to a 6-10 2013 record.

    La Milicia

I agree that 2014 will be the year we can begin to compete if we nail our next two drafts.

I think Reggie has said some profound things.
He was not hired to model menswear, appear on late night TV or be on the cover of GQ.

He wants to build our team the right way-through the draft.

He has also pointed out that it is his job to find good college players that really love to play football-not just “say’ they love it (see Rolando/Jr etc.)
That has been one of the biggest failings of the Raiders over the last ten years. Drafting the wrong guys and overpaying free agents.

“The Raiders (4-10) have stumbled on the field, but McKenzie, especially, is well-respected around the NFL. He took over a TALENT-POOR TEAM that was stripped of draft picks in 2012.”

  • Al_is_theraiders

  • Al_is_theraiders

    lol…the right way…funny sh!t…

  • Gdog

TP remains a project, but people writting him off already are wrong, I remember a guy who was told he was not an NFL QB and people tried to make him a DB but he kept working hard and after a few years he turned into a prety good QB, his name was Rich Gannon.

Let’s just give TP another year, now as the back-up and see how far he can take it, kid is cheap, works hard and has unbelievable athleticism, he’s worth the shot.

    >>>>

I have yet to see anyone say we need to get rid of him unless someone like Philly makes us an offer we cant refuse (2nd rounder?) so I wish that straw man would go away.

What us “Pryor haters” are saying is he is nothing more than a BACKUP right now, and CP is our starter until he gets injured for at least one more year, and if he plays well enough, prolly TWO! GET OVER IT.

Its maddening to see anything but this dose of reality here.

  • Charlie

    Otto
Reggie had nothing to do with the mess that took nine years to create.
It will not get fixed in one.

OUR PLAYERS CAN NOT COMPETE AT THE NFL LEVEL!!!!!!

ROUNDS ONE AND TWO THE LAST 10 Drafts.
2002 Phillip Buchanon, Nap Harris, Langston Walker, Doug Jolley
2003 Nnamdi, Tyler Brayton, Teyo Johnson
    2004 Robert Gallery, Jake Grove
    2005 Fabian Washington, Stanford Routt
    2006 Michael Huff, Thomas Howard
    2007 JAMRCUS RUSSELL, Zack Miller
    2008 DMAC
    2009 DHB, Mike Mitchell
    2010 Rolando McClain, Lamarr Houston
    2011 Stefan Wiz

That’s 21 picks. ONLY FIVE WERE ALONG THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. Simple math says that 9 of your 22 starters are lineman which means AT LEAST NINE PICKS SHOULD HAVE BEEN FOR LINEMAN.
WE HAVE DRAFTED POORLY AND IGNORED LINE PLAY. DISASTROUS!
Panic set in and we started to sign past the prime free agents and trade picks in 2007 and later.

As of March 25, 2012, The Oakland Raiders held TWO SELECTIONS in the 2012 NFL Draft (a 5th and 6th round pick), which was just about a month away. The NFL awarded the Raiders three COMPENSATORY PICKS March 26. (A 3rd round 4th round and 5th round pick).

“In 2010, Al Davis went all out for his football team in an uncapped year and spent the most money in the league at over $150 million in player salaries. THAT IS EASILY THE MOST MONEY EVER SPENT ON A TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF THE NFL. One thing we know for sure is that Al Davis made his own bed here and whether that is good or bad, he must lie in it. At the other end of the spectrum are the Bengals, who have only $83.5 million in commitments for 2012. The Buccaneers, Titans, Redskins, and Broncos also are under $100 million.”

“Reports are now coming out that the Raiders cap overshot is actually more like $30 million for 2012-nearly three times the original figure. Even at the original $11 million estimation, the Raiders had a lot of work to do. With this new figure, they go from pruning and trimming to SLASH AND BURN.”

    3 things.
    1) Realistically they could draft someone and start them over Palmer, justifiably or not. Hopefully that isn’t this year because the QBs this year suck.
    2) “Too high priced to sit on the bench” is bad team management at every level. First you are paying the guy too much. Then you are sitting the better player. The depth chart shouldn’t be sorted by dollar amounts.
    3) Matt Leinart is among the least likely QBs to be on this roster next year.

you gotta realize that no HC wanted to be HC in Oakland, those who would was not that good, and it was all because of bad decisions made by the old management..

DA has the team and players behind him, and thats much more than we have had in many of the recent years.. this in not an avalanche but a very slowmoving glacier..

with slow and secure movements we will be an attractive place to be again, but we only get there by facing reality, and fact is most players and coaches dont want to come here..

The stats that matter the most are wins and losses. I would hope most agree with that.
OVER THE LAST TEN YEARS THE RAIDERS ARE 9-51 AGAINST PLAYOFF TEAMS. 9-51!!!!!!
The point differential in the losses is a whopping 29-12.
The 2011 Raiders under Hue were 2-4 against playoff teams winning by an average of 4 points and losing by an average of 15 points per game.

THAT IS THE COLD REALITY UNDER SEVEN DIFFERENT COACHING STAFFS.

A MASSIVE GAP IN TALENT AGAINST GOOD NFL COMPETITION.
I feel (and the last ten years show) that coaching and scheme will not make a difference in wins and losses till the talent gap is closed. I also believe that changing schemes and coaches every year or two is disastrous for any NFL team. Without some continuity in the player evaluation process you make new coaches revisit issues again and again, thereby delaying progress not accelerating it.

We need two really good drafts to be able to compete again. We simply cannot compete regardless of scheme, time zone, coaching, temperature of the hot dogs and any other meaningless attribute one can think of. WE DO NOT HAVE THE PLAYERS.

  • Myopinion

I hope it really just was that knapps scjeme was a bad fit for carson. He looked good to end his first season with us. I think. I just know I was confident going into the season with him. tuff this year. just weird that cambell, and dalton two lesser qbs, have doned vetter with his teams.

I’m not arguing the talent was not there….and that there were cap issues….that was indeed circumstances reggie could not control……so he gets a pass for those

he does not get a pass in my book for hiring the 2nd least qualified coach in the history of the NFL…davis hiring of kiffen was worst in nfl history……that is his first and biggest decision he had control over….the bad coaching hire resulted in bad coaching staff and will make it harder to attract the talent you say we need…….further…because of the bad coaching hire what talent we did have was made worse

Four year deals were given to a rookie GM and HC because of all the issues I pointed out earlier.
I would love to have gotten Gruden or Del Rio.
Guys like that simply wait for better opportunities because they can.

Our reality impacts everything Reggie can do till 2014.
It is very complicated with many variables impacting many others.

I have simply pointed out that if we can get better players many of these issues begin to get corrected by default. Too big a talent gap right now to compete against good teams. The most pressing matter is getting better talent on the field.

The Raiders cap situatio is not as bad as McKenzie andMckenzie apologists would lead you to believe. Assuming we say goodbye to Seymour, DHB takes a significant paycut or gets cut, Brisiel is waived, maybe TK is waived and another move or two (I say trade Branch) then RM will have plent of room to work with. If Palmer is traded and we can avoid that cap hit then we’ll have a ton of room. I don’t think we should do that, but if that happens then forget about the cap excuse.

I realize there’s some dead money out there, but who else on this team is making anything? Maybe Huff. McFadden’s due like $5 mil. Guys like Moore, Streater, Veldheer, Wiz, Houston, Mitchell, Burress, Pryor,Ford and on and on are not making much or would be bargains to resign (Mitchell). No one on our oline is making big money. Really no one on the defednse if TK and Seymour go except Branch and Huff, and those guys aren’t really near 8 figures. -
