Report: Raiders expand talks with candidates about upper management role

By Steve Corkran
Sunday, January 20th, 2013 at 10:55 am in Oakland Raiders.

This was filed by beat writer Jerry McDonald a few minutes ago:

The Raiders are talking with Scott O’Neil, the former president of Madison Square Garden , about a position as team president, according to a tweet Sunday by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It is the second person reportedly involved in discussions with owner Mark Davis about an upper management position, joining NFL executive vice president Ray Anderson.

It is unclear what that position would mean to Raiders CEO Amy Trask and general manager Reggie McKenzie. Trask has been involved strictly on the business side since McKenzie arrived, including leading an effort for a new stadium.

McKenzie was asked about the reports of a team president while talking with local writers Thursday and said, “That’s a Mark Davis deal. I don’t want to give any leeway of his line of thinking on that. . . . I don’t want to divulge any information in that regard. I’ll let Mark answer those questions.

Davis was not available for comment.

O’Neil, 42, resigned his post as Madison Square Garden president in September after four years on the job. His responsibilities included overseeing the season-ticket and marketing operations of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers.

According to the New York Times, O’Neil “gradually increased his involvement in Knicks’ personnel decisions, often to the annoyance of the basketball operations staff.’’

Can’t win when you have 2 of the worst D players in the league in the line up at the same time, n why the eff has the Lakers neglected the PG position for so long, has me scratching my head, can’t remember who was our last good PG was (defensively talking)

    ———

What true leader PG wants to come to LA and play in Kobe’s shadow?

Kobe will never give up his status on the team. But at the same time he doesnt want to run the show either.

He’s a cold blooded scorer. He’s phenomenal as a scorer. But his defense is not what it once was and he has no ability to make those around him better.

No PG worth a damn will come play under Kobe.

Lakers traded the wrong guy, should have traded Gasol , not Bynum (yes his health is a huge problem , but the guy could play some D, n should have gone after decent back up centers and decent PF

    ———-

Bynum and Kobe couldnt co-exist. Someone had to go.

We’ve seen that story play out before. Remember Shaq?

Same thing is going to happen with Dwight.

Hey debo didn’t Eli win the bowl last year ? And when was the last time a mobile qb won a super bowl o ya Arron Rodgers hmmmm notice something they have in common

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Just saw former Raider Chris Johnson all smiling and hugging his coach.. he is going to the superbowl

Good stuff Chris Johnson.. u went to a real team. Maybe Rolando can Next year too.

ripping on Kobe…the dude’s got 5 rings and 1 of the best players in NBA History. It’s not even debatable…I swear fans are more in love with themselves than their favorite teams.

  • RAIDERMAN99

I’m definitely not looking forward to all the Harbaugh hype that’s coming up and don’t want to contribute to it – but here’s an observation about the Har brothers in comparison to Smiling Titty Boy that needs to be made.

Jim had the vision and guts to make a potentially costly switch to Kaepernick, in the midst of a playoff push.

STB wouldn’t even ACTIVATE TP when the Raid season was down the toilet

John had the vision and guts to can his OC, midstream in the midst of a playoff push.

STB wouldn’t can Krapp until after the 2012 debacle was over, although it was painfully obvious from the very beginning that Krapp had to be dumped.

There are gutsy leaders that know what they’re doing, and there are myopic milquetoasts that don’t have a clue.

Unfortunately, it sure looks like we have the latter acting as our HC.

    RAIDERMAN99′s early bird SB line:

    Whiners -3
    O/U 48

    Fire away.

Kobe’s really up in years, trying to play tough D has him tired and messing up his Offensive games, as evidenced by his last 2 games, than you have Nash, and then Gasol? play nash and Gasol only half the games, and never ever put them both on the floor together, play E Clark at PF , Metta at SF

  • CDERaider

The networks and the league smiling big – they got the exactly the matchup that they wanted.

mo money, mo money, mo money…

Harbaugh hype, Ray’s last game, Kap – it should break the record for viewership.

Do you see the look on everyone’s face when Gasoft is “guarding the rim”

    ——————

You think Gasol would be a lil more involved on defense if he didnt go as long as 6 or 7 possession stretches where he doesnt touch the ball?

You have to move the ball around and keep people involved on the offensive side in order to keep them hustling on the defensive side. Its just human nature. But when you got a guy as dominant as Kobe on your team, and he is so unaware and ambivilant to his teammates mental status’, its really hard to play good team defense.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

We do have talent on this offense

  • JB

If he’s done nothing else right, I DO like the Olsen & April picks for OC & STC respectively. We will be getting back to the offense that we already are and our ST’s won’t be giving games away like they did last year. In that they are going to stick with DMac and a power blocking running game our first pick has to be Luke Joeckel, OT. Let he & Veldheer bang it out for who is best suited for OLT. The one left over will get ORT. Replace Carlisle & Brisel with current players or FA’s and we’ll have a very solid O-Line. That will be a must for a successful offense in 2013. We could possibly trade Brisel back to the Texans for a 3rd round pick. They need his ZBS skills – we don’t.

Gasol never played D, ever, he s8cks at it, Lakers didn’t win champs until Bynum came back from his knee injury, he changed the whole thing, first he need to get rid of that ugly hair cut, he always looks like he hasn’t freakin slept in a week, he needs to atleast try, n yes he’s not getting many touches, but as long as the teams wins, why complain, KOBE was there all the time, he should be happy Lakers traded for him and he got a chance to go to 3 finals and won 2

Oh, he’s got 5 rings? Really? He won them all by himself? I forgot.

Jeez, if he’s so great why does his team suck right now? Oh thats right. He’s only takes credit for wins, he’s never responsible for any losses right?

Rings = Team Accomplishments (and in the Lakers case, with a lot of help from the league)

Fact is, Kobe doesnt have any rings without Shaq (whom he ran out of town) or Gasol (whom he’s trying to run out of town).

The Pro Bowl game is a joke. It’s not even worth watching. What they really should do is just recognize those Pro-Bowl players with a ring, like the SB, and let it go at that. Recognition is what they really want anyway. They can easily afford a trip to Hawaii anytime they choose so that’s no big deal. Besides, nobody wants to get injured for a game that means absolutely nothing. Actually if you think about it, half the players are not the first choice pro bowlers anyway. hey are replacements.

Niners hit the wave at the right time. They built a solid core of 1st and 2nd round picks along both lines, built a strong running game combined with a very good run stopping defense with the best MLB in the business.

They were able to throw 25 million at Harbaugh and his tough guy in your face style worked immediately with the roster in place. They just needed to take the next step.

Helps that the division sucks and you hit the jackpot with a QB on the cheap.

Similar story in Seattle although Carroll had to work more to get the same pieces together, but they built the same foundation and also hit the QB jackpot.

Should be a good battle for the next few years b/w Seattle and SF – think Steelers/Ravens of the west.

Amazing that you can graze a QB’s facemask like the Falcons did to Kap and it is a penalty, but Pollard can lead with his head all game against RB’s, nearly give a dude a seizure, and no penalty.
