Report: Raiders expand talks with candidates about upper management role

By Steve Corkran
Sunday, January 20th, 2013 at 10:55 am in Oakland Raiders.

This was filed by beat writer Jerry McDonald a few minutes ago:

The Raiders are talking with Scott O’Neil, the former president of Madison Square Garden , about a position as team president, according to a tweet Sunday by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It is the second person reportedly involved in discussions with owner Mark Davis about an upper management position, joining NFL executive vice president Ray Anderson.

It is unclear what that position would mean to Raiders CEO Amy Trask and general manager Reggie McKenzie. Trask has been involved strictly on the business side since McKenzie arrived, including leading an effort for a new stadium.

McKenzie was asked about the reports of a team president while talking with local writers Thursday and said, “That’s a Mark Davis deal. I don’t want to give any leeway of his line of thinking on that. . . . I don’t want to divulge any information in that regard. I’ll let Mark answer those questions.

Davis was not available for comment.

O’Neil, 42, resigned his post as Madison Square Garden president in September after four years on the job. His responsibilities included overseeing the season-ticket and marketing operations of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers.

According to the New York Times, O’Neil “gradually increased his involvement in Knicks’ personnel decisions, often to the annoyance of the basketball operations staff.’’

ripping on Kobe…the dude’s got 5 rings and 1 of the best players in NBA History. It’s not even debatable…I swear fans are more in love with themselves than their favorite teams.

    ——–

Oh, he’s got 5 rings? Really? He won them all by himself? I forgot.

Jeez, if he’s so great why does his team suck right now? Oh thats right. He’s only takes credit for wins, he’s never responsible for any losses right?

Rings = Team Accomplishments (and in the Lakers case, with a lot of help from the league)

Fact is, Kobe doesnt have any rings without Shaq (whom he ran out of town) or Gasol (whom he’s trying to run out of town).
    ——

Jordan withou pippen and Phil Jackson has no rings. That argument could be made of every great player.

Hating on Kobe is just silly.

    ——-

Pippen without Jordan is what exactly?

And what is Phil without Jordan & Shaq?

C’mon. We know who the common denominator is there and it aint Phil or Pippen.

Jordan’s teams never looked as bad as some of Kobe’s have looked. Im not hating on him. Im calling it as it is. Kobe is a great player. But far from Jordan, Bird, and Magic. Its not even close.

The clones are one guy I think. I thought it was Sullivan.

  • J Hill

Kobe gets all the credit when you guys win.

    ————————————————————–

    Not from me.

It’s a team game win or lose.

Kobe is old too. His crying to the refs instead of getting back on D is a problem.

But right now, replace Nash with say an Eric Bledsoe, and this is a playoff team.

SF -4.5 seems to low to me.

I would have them as 7 point favorites.

Dr. Thompson, I gave you winners!!!
    ====================================
Is 4.5 the opening number ?

I’m a little surprised if it is. I make it 3, but 4.5 isn’t really out of whack since THE MAN knows the favorite is very likely to get the bulk of the action.

As far as claiming winners, I thought you were on ATL ML, RAVENS and OVER – ROUND ROBIN.

Might as well tear that ticket up bcz taking it to the windiow is only going to get you laughs.

Bledsoe is a nice player. Quick learner. Good hustle. Tries hard to make up for his mistakes.

But what exactly do you think he’s going to bring to the table in the “leadership department”?

Nothing. He’s still a young pup with a lot to learn. We wont know what his leadership capabilities are for a long time. He may not have any. He may learn a lot from CP3 and Billups.

But there is no way he makes the Lakers a playoff team. You guys need a leader.

  • mcfadden20.

It’s a team game, yes there are guys better at certain positions than their peers, but other players are doing the dirty work for top players to succeed, Raven’s wouldn’t have beaten the pats if that awesome blocking wasn’t there, you can say Kapp took the team on his back etc etc, but they would have been sitting at home if The SF’s D hadn’t forced like 3 Atl turnovers inside their own 30, including the last drive that sealed the deal

Matt Ryan with his “no pressure INT” and fumble were huge. Atlanta fans should be pissed at him, and that horrible defense. The Ravens are a very bad matchup for SF, unless Joe Flacco is “paid” to fail.

Him & Shaq were the 2 best players in the league during the 3 peat. Yes Gasol is a good player, but he is/was never a HOFer. Kobe is one of the all-time greats, it’s not even debatable and maybe the greatest Laker ever. That counts a whole lot.

    ————–

Ravens have Ray Lewis and his sidekick in Ed Reed. And on offense, Flacco has grown into a leadership role that he previously was too young and still learning in years past.

Niners have Patrick Willis and Harbaugh and now Kap has taken that team on his back.

New England has Brady. Atlanta has Matty Ice.

The leader of a team doesnt have to be the best player, but it is a bonus if he is. But whatever the case, all winning teams need a LEADER. The Lakers dont have any players in the mold of Brady, Kap, or Ray Lewis on their roster.

  • Gdog

Do you think with the Niners hitting the lottery with Kap as the 6th QB taken that year it should make it easier for the Raiders to trade down?

  • mcfadden20.

Pats have not won sh1t since their D started regressing like 6 years ago, letting go of leaders like milloy, harrison , and all the other guys on that side have hurt them really bad, n treating their star players like sh1t also hurt them, like Rich seymour trade, yes they’re still good n all that, n still will make the playoffs, but they’re missing something on that team, that hasn’t brought a Lomdardi trophy to them recently

  • J Hill

    A leader????

The Lakers SIMPLY need a PG who can defend.

Have you seen the Lakers defensively?

Nash literally CAN”T guard the other teams PG. Kobe has to take the dominant ball handler.

Apply your Raider analysis to the Lakers. Gasol and Nash are the McClain and DHB, lol.

  • CDERaider

That bogus personal foul roughing the passer on 3rd down was Buulllshhhtt! The game was very close – that call might have been the difference. Cheap shot artist Niners get away with murder all day late hits, helmet to helmet, CB’s getting away with all kinds of holds and push offs. They got away with a hold on that final 4th down play too.

That bad call and even worse no call put the Fruity Whiners in the super bowl. It’s garbage.

  • Just Fire Baby

I am certain I could score on Nash occasionally.

He is about as good defensively as Clarence Love.

  • JB

Reece is a great young Raider. He’s a hard worker. He’sgives us a 100% but he’s NOT a pro bowler. He may be in the future but that’s yet to be determined. I want OUR guys to be recognized as Pro Bowlers when they earn it. Enough with the guys who seem to get it automatically but don’t really deserve it like Seymour did a while back. The Pro Bowl has become the Replacement Bowl. There’s nothing special about that – just a game that’s a waste of time. Being named a replacement is no big honor. think about it. Not saying anything bad about Reece. Just commenting more about the Pro Bowl.

  • goldenstate

Jerry and his pops would go see Raider games in the early 70s……..Steve n Becker on the other hand are fuking fairies……

  • Just Fire Baby

Pro Bowl is worthless, HOF voters focus on All-Pro selections much more so.

True, Leadership is needed when the push comes to shove, like when the games get tough, but leadership or not, they shouldn’t have problem beating this scrub teams, Kobe is old, can play good D, but if he really locks down , it effects his O, Nash is not the same player on O any more, and is horrible on D end, Metta is not the same D player as he once was, Gasol is going softer and softer by the minute, only Howard is doing something defensively

Amazing that you can graze a QB’s facemask like the Falcons did to Kap and it is a penalty, but Pollard can lead with his head all game against RB’s, nearly give a dude a seizure, and no penalty.

The league has to look into this.

Pollard is the same guy who injured Brady and Gronkowski twice. When u see replay of what he does, he tackles and then intentionally rolls over their ankle..throwing all his weight on it.

He and Mundy from Pittsburgh have a lot of injuries they’ve given…It’s not a coincidence imo.

I mean, I don’t mind Pollard I guess, he is playing within the “rules”.

I’m definitely not looking forward to all the Harbaugh hype that’s coming up and don’t want to contribute to it – but here’s an observation about the Har brothers in comparison to Smiling Titty Boy that needs to be made.

Jim had the vision and guts to make a potentially costly switch to Kaepernick, in the midst of a playoff push.

STB wouldn’t even ACTIVATE TP when the Raid season was down the toilet

John had the vision and guts to can his OC, midstream in the midst of a playoff push.

STB wouldn’t can Krapp until after the 2012 debacle was over, although it was painfully obvious from the very beginning that Krapp had to be dumped.
