ESPN: Raiders hire Sparano to coach line

The Raiders have hired Tony Sparano to coach the offensive line and serve as assistant head coach, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday.

Sparano was recentely let go as the offensive coordinator of the New York Jets. His resume also includes being head coach of the Miami Dolphins and offensive line coach for the Dallas Cowboys.

A Raiders official said the club was not confirming the hire.

    @Mistic
Way to make crap up again.

In 2010, the day JC was traded he was told he was going to be the 2010 starter. Got all the starting reps in practice and in the preseason game.

JC lost his starting job in 2010 to poor play against the Rams. (Really, he didn’t know the play book). Are you saying that Grads didn’t separate his shoulder and wasn’t placed on IR in 2010?

“Owner Al Davis suggested earlier in the offseason that he was moving on from Bruce Gradkowski because of the free agent’s injury history.

Davis concedes that Gradkowski has it what it takes to be a successful QB in the NFL. On the other hand, “as good as Gradkowski is for a single game, we can’t hold up the injury factor from happening,” said Davis. “He incurs injuries, and that worries the hell out of me. And I like continuity.”

    What was that Mistic….

    you’re proving it yourself.

If you HIT with an O-lineman or D-lineman, your impact is minimal (Chiefs, Dolphins, Browns, Bills, 49ers pre Harbaugh/Alex Smith)

If you HIT with a QB = franchise turnaround (Colts, Redskins, Saints, Bengals, Seahawks, Falcons)

  • The_Judge37

Good teams add good players every year. That’s the forumula. Can’t just add one player and have instant success. Need good players on the lines, at QB, RB, WR, DB, LB, DL. That’s it, it’s stupid to say building throught the lines doesn’t matter. Lines are one thing in a long list that needs to be built.

    We need more picks.
    Players we should target.
    1- DE/ OLB D Moore and B Jenkins
    2- DE D Jones
3- OLB J Collins (he reminds me of V Miller) I’m not sold in JJ
    4- ILB A Jackson
5: CBs: X Rhodes, D Amerson, D Trufant, J Poyer, and my boy Leon McFadden (Go Azrecs)

No $h!t. But look at the Chargers and Carolina who have good QB’s but horrible lines. It goes both ways.

Giants had 1st rounders all over their D line when they crushed Pats twice

2010 and 2012, the Oakland Raiders were in the top 6 in sacks allowed and QB hits allowed. We were in the top 3 per dropback last year.

And that is with 3/5′s of the same O-line (Veldheer, Barnes, Savage) in both years, with Campbell, Gradkowski, Boller, Palmer, Leinart and Pryor all getting snaps.

  • alex7

The Packers were #1 ranked O in Super Bowl year (2011), 16th in D.

Saints were #2 ranked O in Super Bowl year, 18th in D. (2010)

    Trade back

    1. Mingo or Jordan

    3. Markus Wheaton
    4. Datone Jones
    5. Joseph Fauria, if Myers leaves
    6. Marcus Lattimore
    7. Bpa, possibly Tyrann Mathieu

We do definitely need to improve our Guard and Center play.

But at tackle, we are pretty solid. Those guys are being asked to block Pro Bowlers almost weekly, and both Veldheer and Barnes grade out pretty well each year.

  • Just Fire Baby

Tyrann Mathieu won’t last into the 7th round.

I don’t think he will be there for our pick in the 4th round, but I hope so.

He can have a Devin Hester like impact as a return man, immediately.

again, what was that vaunted SF O-line doing before Harbaugh came and turned Alex Smith around?

Same linemen were LOSING games while Gore ran for a lot of yards.

    >>>>

Pssttt.. Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati were both drafted in the first round in 2010. (11th and 17th)

    They gave Smith more time.

  • Just Fire Baby

Tough to make a mock so early, because I, like just about everyone else, would love to trade down.

But I don’t expect much, even if we do trade down a few spots.

Last year Minny moved from #3 to #4 and got a 4th and 6th rounder. I would certainly do that, but that isn’t necessarily a kings ransom.

And I hope Reggie isn’t too hell bent on this draft, and would prefer he trade down in certain spots, and take the payout in next years draft.

Let’s add some talent this year, dissect what we are doing at QB/RB/WR/C and other spots going forward, and go into 2014 loaded with draft picks.

  • qodrn1

Jamarcus is making a comeback. Does he still belong to the Raiders?

If your argument is all you need is a great QB, I’d look at this past year of the Raiders. CP played pretty damn spectacularly for most of the season (under CONSTANT duress) and got 4 wins.

Lets draft some o-lineman and see what happens.

If we draft a QB at 3.. fine. I have no problem with long term thinking as a business.

But those are our two choices, IMO. QB or o-lineman in the first round.

You seem to be saying all we need to do is draft skill players. That is complete garbage. What good would another skill player do us if our o-line still sucks?

  • Jackie Bibby

As much as I hate DA I like this hire and think he may have just saved his own azz firing knapp for guys like olson and sparano… Theres hope for the ole tityboy now, for a second there I thought hed have no hope.

  • mcfadden20.

Olson >> KNapp, Sparano >>> Pollack, Bobby April >>> our previous ST coach, let’s wait n see the Linebacker coach, maybe Rob Ryan or Greg “kill the head” williams will come coach our linebackers

If we stay at #3, I would like either Geno, Warmack, Werner or Mingo.

Trade down to the 8-11 range, I would switch to Milner or Te’O.

If we can get in the 2nd round, early ideally, I would love Jonathan Franklin from UCLA. Think he will be the Ray Rice/Doug Martin of this draft.

Gotta wonder about Sparano’s Jets team giving up 11 sacks to the Bolts a month back. Guess that qualifies for assistant head coach under Denise.

Yeah April, Olson, and Sparano’s have experience but if we chart their trends they are all losing more than winning. And losing more and more.

What’s the over under on how many times ‘we are working to improve’ is said this year?

Sparano was OC not the Oline coach, Sparano is a good coach when he only has to focus on Oline, April has good resume, Olson too early to tell, but PBS >> ZBS for Mcfadden and most of our Olinemen

I like the Bobby April hire the most.

Calling our return game “disastrous” would be being too kind.

When you don’t have an elite QB or defense, you need to find ways to cut corners. Beasting in the return game is one of the easiest ways to do so.

Expect to hear that line alot this year sir. unfortunately. We still don’t have a damn identity on this team. Wondered around an entire season tryin to figure out who we are….. STILL don’t know. Not expecting anything different until it manifests itself in some semblance during the preseason. Not getting too excited over coaches, or picks until then. I’ve done that too much. Gotta see it.

  • Just Fire Baby

We definitely don’t have an identity, but if we were trying to portray in the future what DA’s vision is, is of a defense that creates turnovers and gets big-play, mixed with an offense that does enough to win.

DA seems like a guy intent on trying to win a lot of 23-20 games.

  • ArmChair GM

Vertical passing, power running, is all gonna depend on our offensive line.

We have Veldheer at Left Tackle, and Wiz2 at Left Guard.
Ok so who should the other 3 positions on the offensive line go to?

Either through our existing roster, the draft, or free agency, who should our starting Center, Right Guard, and Right Tackle be?

JFB, 434. What about the explosive offense DA referred to? Btw, not saying I disagree with your assesent, just that DA has fallen flat on his face so far in what he ‘said’ he wanted to build.

Good news saintkaufman! From everything Reggie and Olson said, Palmer will be our starter for next season for sure. Pryor will be used in some “special” packages.

Maybe what Callahan did with changing the game plan last minute was inadvertant sabotage and may not have been literally on purpose….but it was sure indirect sabotage.

Gannon is correct in saying the audible signals and changes at the line should have been changed along with sticking to a more run orientated, play action attack with screens to the RB’s and then taking shots deep. A lot of motion should have been used as well.

Oh well….we know Callahan screwed up.
