Ravens’ Johnson grateful to Hue, Raiders

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, January 29th, 2013 at 3:42 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Former Raiders cornerback Chris Johnson, who asked for his release last season while recovering from a family tragedy, was grateful to former coach Hue Jackson and the organization for the support he got after his sister was killed and his mother was shot in an alleged domestic dispute.

Johnson, a reserve cornerback for the Baltimore Ravens, said Jackson, along with defensive backs coaches Rod Woodson and Kevin Ross as well as Raiders legend Willie Brown, checked on him constantly. Johnson also feels indebted to late owner Al Davis, who made him a starting cornerback at age 29 and paid him accordingly.

“I’m very thankful for what Mr. Davis did for me,” Johnson said. “I love that organization, the organization was good to me and my family.”

Johnson thought the decision to fire Jackson was a mistake, and asked about his observations about the differences between the Ravens and the Raiders, he did not pull any punches:

– “Hue was an outspoken coach, and that’s what you want as a player, you want somebody to go to war for you and talk and let him do the talking and the players are going to do the backing up. Hu was the best coach I had since I was out there. I mean, we went 8-8, we was a good, solid team, you could see the identity of the team. I don’t know what was said, he wasn’t for the team or whatever, that was a straight lie. Hue had the best interests for the team and there were some of the guys in that locker room _ some of the key guys in that locker room _ that weren’t leaders. Here, on this team, Ray (Lewis) controls that locker room.”

– “I’d put it like this, if you put Ray Lewis in the Oakland locker room, probably a good 20 people wouldn’t be on that team, because pf the way Ray runs his ship, and manning up the guys. In Oakland the guys weren’t like that I mean, I’m not going to call no names, but the high guys you’re supposed to put the position on, they weren’t leaders, you talk a good game but they weren’t playing a good game. Ray does that. That was more of the thing that was wrong with Oakland, they were getting guys that didn’t love the game.”

Johnson took in his 14-year-old niece, while his nephew is living with his mother, now fully recovered physically.

The nightmare will be revisted later this month when Esters goes on trial on Texas.

“It’s going to bring all the emotions right back up,’’ Johnson said. “We’ll try to deal with that after the Super Bowl. Hopefullly on Sunday we’ll be able to hold up that trophy.’’

most pundits say the raiders have arguably the worst roster in the nfl. it’s heroic of palmer to do what he’s done in those conditions. give him a good team, and watch him flourish.

and the zone-read element of the pistol is dead. exposed by the ravens like missdick gets exposed here daily.

  • mcfadden20.

Boldin and Smith did save Flacco from some passes getting intercepted, and went up for the ball and took tough hits, no way Ravens would have even made it to the superbowl with Moore or DHB starting, take your blind hate glasses off and look at the team objectively , why do you have to hate some one on the team, it’s a team game, one player doesn’t win it all by himself

    Raiders will lower seating capacity

Posted by Michael David Smith on February 6, 2013, 2:07 PM EST

    Getty Images
The Raiders are taking a page out of the Jaguars’ playbook, not on the field but in the stands.

In what is being termed a “capacity adjustment,” the Raiders are planning to block off many upper-deck seats, CSNBayArea.com reports. The move is reminiscent of the tarps the Jaguars have put up in their stadium, blocking off thousands of seats that they’re unable to sell.

Although it is not yet known how many seats the Raiders will block off, it will likely give the Raiders the NFL’s lowest seating capacity. The Raiders already had the second-lowest capacity at 63,132, higher only than the Bears, who can seat 61,500 at Soldier Field.

The Raiders are expected to close “Mount Davis,” the upper deck addition that was part of the deal that got the Raiders to move back to Oakland from Los Angeles in 1996. That addition, which blocked the view of the Oakland hills that was long considered one of the nicest features of the Oakland Coliseum, has long been controversial, and the “Mount Davis” nickname was a shot at the late Raiders owner Al Davis.

The Raiders have frequently struggled to sell tickets in Oakland, and most of their home games have been blacked out. In 2012 they had only one blackout, thanks in part to the new NFL rule that allowed teams to lift blackouts while selling only 85 percent of their tickets.

Ravens won exactly ONE playoff game the 6 or 7 years preceeding Flacco.

They were 5-11 the year before he got there.

Flacco has taken that franchise to unchartered territory, and will be compensated accordingly.

Now if that new stadium deal comes thru like my gut hunch thinks it is, Reg/DA will be pure genius.

Right now this team has a horrible pox, but get that new IHOP deal done and all is forgiven and forgotten.

We are talking about an overapid check cashing garbage time all star, who doesnt care one way or another what happens to the raiders. Just picks his nose on the sideline.. with his helmet on his lap.

Raiders would be alot better off with FLacco cuz we wouldnt be looking for a franchise Qb

  • Just Fire Baby

There was a great story years ago about Flacco’s first ever NFL practice.

As the story goes, he gets to the line and Ray-Ray starts calling all kinds of stuff, barking at him and the play-call. Joe just backs up, asks him if he is done, and promptly completes a pass.

Dude has major stones, and is a born winner.

Don’t know……Never will. It doesn’t matter either. All things are relative, and the only thing that matters is how guys work together on a specific team.

Stars become duds on other teams…..Duds become stars when they get traded. It’s all a wash and nothing can be predicted with any degree of accuracy.

What team moves their starting LT to RT, and brings a guy off the bench who didn’t start one game, to LT to start the playoffs?

A team getting crappy LT play, that’s who.

11.5 sacks allowed is mind-blowingly bad.

Saw this on two science blogs so went there: it’s Facebook’s map of NFL fan distribution. Of course, we know this is highly subject to change based on the performance of a team during the season and based on the team’s performance over several seasons, but it’s mighty dim for the Raiders.

You don’t sell many hats, t-shirts, jerseys, etc. the way the Raiders have been performing. You also have to remember that these days the city of Oakland is, for good reason, not viewed favorably by most of the country so that when you factor that into the team’s dismal performance and couple it again with the team’s link to the dark side of LA (gangs), you get a picture of a franchise that is either irrelevant or dimly viewed or both.

A new football stadium built where today’s stadium is makes financial sense (BART0 but I always used to harbor hopes that an intimate, family-friendly baseball park would be built near Jack London Sq. for the A’s as it would show off another side of Oakland, be good for business, and thus for all of the city.

Or, I’d be happy if either team located in Contra Costa County.

Prognosis: Might be asked to take a pay cut.

    DB Michael Huff $11.288.750 ($4)
Prognosis: Not much Raiders can do here.

    WR Darrius Heyward-Bey $10.601 ($7.721)
Prognosis: Hearing rumblings he is a cut candidate.

    DT Tommy Kelly $11.099.270 ($6.5)
Prognosis: Acting as own agent, he’s a cut candidate.

    *RB Darren McFadden $9.685.084 ($5.826.250)
Prognosis: It’s tricky, but Raiders ready to walk this way with Run DMC in contract year.

    SS Tyvon Branch $10.900 ($6)
    Prognosis: See Michael Huff

    MLB Rolando McClain $6.675 ($4.005)
Prognosis: Raiders might take a cap hit to cut him, but it would be worth it.

    RG MIke Brisiel $5.06 ($4.35)
Prognosis: Major ankle surgery and scrapping of ZBS makes him a “Cut; failed physical” candidate.

    *PK Sebastian Janikowski $5.1 ($3.8)
Prognosis: SeaBass swimming upstream in final year, unless Raiders restructure him.

I will bite on this, I would take Derrick Mason, Mark Clayton and Todd Heap then, over are current starting receivers. Hmmm…Jared Gaither at OT wasn’t bad. Also Flacco was 11/22 for 160 and a TD. Our Carson Palmer clone, Kerry Collins had INT and a fumble and the defense forced another fumble. The score was 13-10. Now I understand that is good for a rookie, but not earth shattering. The Ravens defense still ruled the day.
