Seymour decision haunting Raiders

General manager Reggie McKenzie inherited a Raiders roster, he said, with “out-of-whack” contracts last season. As a result, he made a series of drastic moves designed to bring the situation under control.
Of note, he waived No. 1 cornerback Stanford Routt and linebacker Kamerion Wimbley soon after he was hired. Several other moves, including restructuring numerous contracts, helped the Raiders free up enough salary-cap space so that the Raiders could sign a handful of new players.
However, the one move McKenzie didn’t make is coming home to roost. McKenzie opted to keep aging defensive tackle Richard Seymour for one more season. As it turned out, Seymour played only eight games and didn’t have anywhere near the desired impact.
His biggest impact is going to be on this year’s salary cap, with Seymour counting for almost $14 million in so-called “dead money.” Put another way, almost one-eighth of their $121 million salary cap in 2013 is going to come from Seymour’s voided contract.
The Raiders would have been better off absorbing the blow of severing ties with Seymour last season, when it was apparent that they needed to deal with the contracts McKenzie considered out of whack.
As it stands, the Raiders are right up against the projected cap for 2013, with room needed in the coming days to re-sign some of their prospective free agents, other teams’ free agents and their 2013 draft picks.
Fortunately for McKenzie and the Raiders, there are a few viable options to get to where they need to be.
The obvious targets cutting or restructuring the contracts of wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey and defensive tackle Tommy Kelly. Cutting these two veterans would free up $10 million in cap space.
They could net more than $9 million more by cutting quarterback Carson Palmer, a risky move, and turning over the keys to the offense to third-year quarterback Terrelle Pryor or a veteran signed in free agency.
The more likely scenario involves restrructuring Palmer’s contract, as they did last offseason, so that it’s more cap friendly in 2013. The Raiders simply can’t afford to have Seymour and Palmer eat up approximately one-fourth of their cap space in 2013.
Beyond that, there’s not much else McKenzie can do this season, except to cut other veterans that free up a million here and a million there.
On the bright side, McKenzie is making strides toward getting the salary cap more in the Raiders favor. He can keep it that way by avoiding contracts such as the one given Seymour and made worse by keeping him around too long.

I don’t have a problem with people for whatever reason hating Carson Palmer. It’s their perrogative. He has his share of warts, pick 6′s, etc. I don’t understand what’s the hate about personally but I can respect the POV.

I kind of do have a problem with the crowd that actively root for him to fail so their man Pryor gets the shot. To me, that’s treason. You root for whoever is the starting QB to do well and win games. Period. End of discussion.

  • RaiderRockstar

    Bcz #947,

nobody wants Palmer to kick the bucket, just take his contract elsewhere. I’m hopeful he’ll do what Vick did and rip up his existing mega-deal and sign a 1-year contract for $7-10 mil plus incentives

the consensus around the league is that he’s not worth the money. Fix the money issue and I think he sticks. Palmer is just the present, not the future. He’s basically a stopgap until we’re able to draft a franchise QB – which obviously won’t happen this year (despite JFB’s best efforts to have us take a flier on Geno Smith at #3)

if Palmer refuses to do anything about his contracts, tell him to kick rocks. We can milk 4-6 wins out of a few cheap free agents like Matt Moore & Kellen Clemens. Heck, maybe Terrelle Pryor steps up and shows something in his 3rd year? I’d certainly make it an open competition at QB, regardless of who is on the roster. no more scholarships!

This draft is going to tell me alot about Reggie.
We were 7 million under the cap last season at one point–no retention of M Bush

The landmine of Seymore’s contract was blown.

The Knapp ZBS debacle (admitted to by Reggie & DA)

Now we have to cut T Kelly, DHB and Carson Palmer to pick up any quality FAs. Leaving us with TP and the Green Bay practice squad.

If Reggie does not make great moves in this draft this team will not get past 8-8 until about 2015–if we are lucky.

does anyone UNDERSTAND that the reason Palmer’s $ for this coming season is so HIGH is because last year he played (after restructuring) for the veteran MINIMUM??

He played for less than $1 million last year. So in essence his cap hit is 2 years, $15 million.

    2013 folks:
Palmer is not the only one that will need to restructure.

“Meanwhile, Oakland is one of 10 teams currently over the salary cap. Oakland is $4.5 million over the cap for 2013. It was severely over the cap last season. This year, the Raiders, who will have to address punter Shane Lechler, tight end Brandon Myers and linebacker Philip Wheeler in free agency, will still have to make a lot of tough decisions and will have to tweak some contracts again. But they should be able to do a little more than they did last year.”

“Fans who pined for the Jon Gruden fantasy to materialize should prepare for a more simple reality: McKenzie and Allen rolling up their sleeves and embarking on year two.
In some ways, the second year will be a lot like the first — lots of changes to the roster.”

“I know we have some guys that are going to be the core of what we want and the type of players we want,” Allen said. “I also know we’ve got some work to do to get more of those types of players.”

“Those players will be found within a budget, because McKenzie does not believe in running up huge salary cap overages as Al Davis did, and the Raiders are believed to be close to the projected $121 million figure for 2013.
McKenzie told reporters Nov. 30 the Raiders would be in position “to do some things” but lamented he didn’t see being able to bring aboard a big-ticket free agent in the way the Packers did with Charles Woodson when he was Director of Operations in Green Bay.
That means that players with salaries that appear to exceed their production are candidates to be traded or released. McKenzie is currently without second- and fifth-round draft picks.”

Middle linebacker Rolando McClain, scheduled to make $4 million, will be released when it makes the most sense with regard to the salary cap.
Others whose financial commitments could be an issue include wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey ($7,721,000 salary) and defensive tackle Tommy Kelly ($6.5 million salary, with potential bonuses up to $9.4 million).”

“The Raiders are making changes to their offensive staff. It may take a couple of years to dig themselves out of a terrible cap situation that this regime inherited.”

“The 2012 roster purge was necessary to even lineup and play this year but no one should have fooled themselves into thinking it would mean immediate success. Not sure things will be any better in 2013.”

“Going to be a slow process, but keeping Dennis Allen was right move.”

Yeah i reserve my hate for former 9ers who don’t produce in Silver & Black. Kwame Harris is right at the top of that list.

Based on that chart the top three in pick sixes are Farve, Marino and Namath. All Hall of Famers. You don’t know much about football do you sauce?

Thanks for sticking on topic Glenny…..I said in last decade…..
    ========================================

Gosh weaksauce, I was just trying to broaden your horizons to other decades, but you missed that point too. But you still want to draft a 395 pound nose tackle with our lst pick even tho he would be a one down player. That went out in the 1950′s weaksauce.

Since Palmer throws an average number of Pic Sixes I think we need to call all QBs Pic six [Insert Name]

Pic Six Brees, Pic Six Brady, Pic Six Manning wow this is so orginal isn’t it!
    ****************************

Name the QB who leads in pick sixes in the last decade…………PALMER
    *********************************
Thought it was Farve even being out of league last couple of years and thought Rivers also had more. Do you have a source besides Silver and Black Blog or the likes…

Its called memory and we discussed his propensity to throw picks sixes when he first got here….come on we all went in depth on this

I have said this at least 100 times on this blog. How much do any of you think that Rich Seymour had to do with the development of undrafted Desmond Bryant or Matt Shaughnessy? Do any of you really think those guys just turned out to be good players out of nowhere on their own? Without a lst ballot HOF helping them?

    ————————————————————————————————————–

I’m sure Big Rich helped out those young guys tremendously. He more than likely told them things like “yall should go to practice everyday, don’t take plays off, don’t take games off, and please don’t punch QBs in the face and get thrown out the game.”

Chris Johnson was 100% speaking off Big Rich when he said the big name guys who should be leaders are not leaders at all.

EEEfffff Seymour. If I was Reggie I would take twice the cap hit to keep that mofo out of our Locker room next season. And I would get Harvey Updyke to go pay his backyard tree a visit.
