It’s all ‘downhill’ for Raiders rushing attack

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, February 13th, 2013 at 11:57 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Here’s a story from beat writer Jerry McDonald about Raiders first-year offensive coordinator Greg Olson talking about how he intends to use running back Darren McFadden next season:

In an uphill climb toward respectability, the Raiders direction will be decidedly downhill.

Offensive coordinator Greg Olson made it clear Wednesday during a meet-and-greet with local media that his plans for running back Darren McFadden will include the kind of gap and power blocking schemes that made him one of the NFL’s most explosive running backs in 2010 and 2011.

McFadden fell to a career-low 3.3 yards per carry in 2012 under the zone scheme runs favored by offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, who was fired after the season.

“I’m not naive enough to believe it’s all Greg Knapp’s fault,” Olson said. “Certainly there are some things I hope I can bring to the table that will allow us to have

Oakland Raiders’ Darren McFadden (20) runs against the Kansas City Chiefs in the first quarter at the O.co Coliseum in Oakland, Calif. on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012. (Nhat V. Meyer/Staff) success.”

Olson becomes the Raiders’ third offensive coordinator in three seasons. Head coach Hue Jackson served as the play-caller in 2011, but Knapp was hired after general manager Reggie McKenzie fired Jackson.

The Olson offense will look a lot more like the one Jackson installed as offensive coordinator in 2010.

“Coming in a year ago, they made a switch to a zone system,” Olson said. “I don’t know if you ever want to pigeonhole yourself that way and say, ‘That’s what we do.’ You may not be able to do that based on the players you have.”

Regarding McFadden, Olson said, “Maybe a year ago, they weren’t sure about that zone scheme. Now, after a year of having to look at it, maybe he is a downhill runner. So we’ll get back to some of the gap schemes and things he does well.”

Olson is also intrigued by fullback Marcel Reece. He sees Reece as versatile enough to be a third-down back and operate in a single-back offense and as a player to utilize for favorable matchups.

“I was pleasantly surprised watching the tape to see that in a lot of the downhill lead plays where you need a fullback in there, he wasn’t a big thumper type but he did go willingly and block some of those linebackers,” Olson said.

Who i think raiders should target in free agency:

    Delanie Walker TE:
great blocker, hard nosed, can do a lot, matchup problem, not the greatest hands, but does a lot. got overshadowed by VD. upgrade over myers imo at probably a lesser price.

    Larry Grant LB:
Played outside in a 4-3 with Ohio state and St. Louis, played inside in a 3-4 with SF. hard hitter against the run, ok in pass coverage, filled in nicely for P. willis when he was hurt niners didn’t really lose much outside of p willy being great in pass coverage n grant being avg. will come pretty cheap because he is a backup and might want to go somewhere where he can be a starter or at least compete. bay area guy

    Tracey Porter CB:
injuries a concer, other than that the guy is a baller and a playmaker when he is on the field. will come cheap because he is coming off a yr where he didn’t play much.

    LaRon Landry S:
Hard hitter, big tackler, will be an upgrade in coverage from what we have had recently. will probably be the most expensive guy to get on the list at a position we already have people at, although i like the thought of keeping huff at corner, personally.

    Alan Branch DT:
Big run stuffer but can play every down. beast. don’t know how much it would cost to get him here though, or if he would be willing to leave a title contender for us, unlikely, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.

what do y’all think are some guys we should go after in FA?

My bad, Bacon is great….I am thinking more along the lines of pork chops and pork tenderloin. All the parasites in it….I have to see that crap burned through in order to stomach it.

Bacon is clearly cooked through and it still tastes great.
    ********
LoL. Cook a pork chop to 165 degrees and all the parasites (if there were any to begin with) will be gone. Chicken/poultry is FAR more dangerous than today’s pork. Trichinosis (the most common associate parasite with pig) has almost completely been eradicated from the US, with only and average of 11 cases a year being reported, with a majority of those cases actually being traced to eating wild animals (bears, foxes etc) rather than pigs.

SI did a stat from the 2011 season, of what pass-rushers got the most QB pressures per total pass-rushing snaps in the NFL.

Melton was #1 in the NFL, for any position.

NO doubt that helps, but from the interiorer?

I can see sliding the TE or RB over so the G-C-G guys don’t have much backup, but Melton is demolishing the guy in front of him snap after snap.

Not to be insensitive, but the old man is going out at the right time; the Lakers are in shambles right now.

To paraphrase another Laker legend, there is no Jello jiggling anywhere in LA these days.

  • Gdog

Ok, Reggie.. get THIS guy and let our TE that can catch passes but cannot block Olive Oil go…

    From PFF:

    5. Delanie Walker

    2012 Grade: +6.0
    2012 Snaps: 589

Summary: If you want a receiving tight end, Walker isn’t your man, as his nine regular season drops tied for third-most in 2012. However, if you want a tight end for the purpose of run blocking, then Walker is your man. He is one of just three tight ends to maintain above a run block rating above +5.0 in each of the past three years, and his +10.7 run block rating was second in the league in 2012.

you don’t need to pay top dollar for a DT to get production.

you can find a fat slug space eater for 25 cents in free agency. Jones & Branch from Seattle top the list of available DT’s. Knighton & Melton will be expensive too imo

Isaac Sopoaga & Sammie Lee Hill would do just fine. Those guys plus Desmond & Christo means we’re set at DT in my eyes

Houston’s days are done at LDE….last year at my cousin’s wedding I asked him why he isnt inside…he told me because of the vet guys that are in front of him. Well those two bums are gone and he brute strength and relentless motor will be better used at UT. Also dont forget his is very stout vs the run when plays directed at him. Bryant on other hand is a UT as well but better not start at NT or we are doing the same bs again thinking we will get a better result
