Packers cut DB Woodson; Raiders should begin pursuit

Now that the Green Bay Packers made official what was speculated on most of the day, the Raiders should contact Woodson’s agent and see if there’s any interest in Woodson rejoining the Raiders.
Of course, it might be a futile exercise, given Woodson’s agent, Carl Poston, said that Woodson wants to play for a Super Bowl contender, and the Raiders seem much farther away from that than most other teams.
Still, it’s worth a shot. Woodson might be intrigued about finishing his NFL career with the team that drafted him in 1998 and exposed him to his first taste of postseason success.
Woodson joined a Raiders team fresh from a 4-12 season before his arrival. They were in the playoffs three seasons later, with Woodson playing a huge role at cornerback.
Naturally, the Raiders were 4-12 last season, too, and seem just as far away from being a legitimate contender as they were when Woodson first joined the Raiders.
Cost also would be an issue for a Raiders team that isn’t as flush with salary-cap space as other teams. Further, it’s unlikely that Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie would overspend to be reunited with Woodson.
In November, McKenzie talked about how difficult it was his first year with the Raiders, given their salary-cap constraints.
“I remember talking to Ted Thompson,” McKenzie said of the Packers general manager. “His rookie year, he was able to get Charles Woodson. I would have liked to have done that.”
Well, now McKenzie can make that happen.
Signing Woodson would allow the Raiders to leave Michael Huff at cornerback and give them something they have lacked for numerous seasons: an impact player on defense.
The Raiders need far more help than Woodson can provide, especially this late in his career. Still, McKenzie has to start somewhere. Bringing in a player as well respected and talented as Woodson would be viewed as just that kind of start.

Conditioning has been a HUGE problem for the Raiders for decades. Some of that has to be Al’s lackadaisical “let the players do what they want” mantra, and some of that has to be the lack of leadership we hear about all too much.
    ********************************************************
This is not only a stupid statement but it’s a flat out LIE, Al Davis has never had a “lackadaisical let the players do whatever they want” anything. Where do you guys get this foolishness from?

You need to follow another man. You are a complete and utter idiot…………period

You have no idea what the hell you’re talking about. You just talk to be heard.

Yes. Why don’t we tank the season so we can draft Clowney and then tank again so we can get a top QB in 2015 and then again lose every game in 2015 so we can draft # 1 again in 2016.

By the time we get to 2017 we’ll have a few good players and can maybe look at a .500 season.

Of course, we’ll have to resign Clowney by that time and it’ll cost a bunch so we can’t keep him…so we just keep on tanking for another 3 yr’s and then start all over again.

The one Raiders’ player we could foresee being in high demand in a trade (that we are willing to trade) is Michael Huff, possibly Branch; either one would probably need to renegotiate their contract, I’m sure one would be willing to be on a SB contender.

Yeah, but is there a SB contender that needs a downgrade at safety?

Bergstrom was Reggie’s first ever draft pick as a GM.

He WILL BE starting somewhere on the line this year.

I think he will be at RT.

Kelly is dead in the water. No frigging way should Reggie sign him.

Huff needs to keep learning at CB, he’s an above average FS, but might still become a very good CB.

DHB has been above average and is still learning the game and is a great downfield blocker. Works hard.

To dump him would be sending all the wrong signals on a TEAM. If he goes, I think it is an indicator Reggie has no clue what he is doing.

Trade down a few spots and just pick Warmack, IMO.

I think we are fine at CB with Huff and Hanson for one year… Adams as fill in.

We do need at least two d-linemen to replace Kelly and upgrade Shonasty. I’d like to see either FS or LB as other late picks.

If we draft Warmack I am fine rolling the dice that Nix or Bergstrom can fill in for the horrible, horrible, horrible Brisiel. Maybe we can squeak another season out of Barnes if he can stay healthy.

Huff has been above average his whole career. Worthy of his salary? Prolly not… but what does it cost to replace him? And he might still get better at CB.

Adams and Hanson might be ok at CB, if thats how they want to save money next year. No way should Gio be on any NFL football field though. He makes Schweigert look awesome.
